I stopped by Burtons Grill & Bar for a late Wednesday afternoon lunch and was pleased to see a variety of appealing menu options, along with a great lunch deal on the menu. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and a Greek salad, which was a satisfying combination. The lunch crowd was lowkey and relaxed and I noticed about four people pull up and break out their laptops at the bar to work while they ate. My late lunch snaked into happy hour, so I ended up ordering a cocktail and a key lime pie for dessert. The pie had a delicous graham cracker crust and tasty key lime flavor; however, I was pretty stuffed by this point so I couldn't finish it. Happy hour was really bumping with a great crowd. Nearly every seat at the bar was taken and the music was pretty good. One bartender was on duty servicing the entire bar on her own and when happy hour hit, she got slammed. She held it down though! This restaurant is a fantastic spot whether you are looking for a relaxed lunch or a lively happy hour to wind down the day. Beautiful restaurant, great food and vibes! My husband and I went to Burton's tonight. Oh my word!!! We will be back!! We both started with the she crab soup. We are experts on this particular soup and I tell you...you will be hard pressed to find a better one than here. We both had the ribeye with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. Very disappointing experience at Burton's. We were initially seated in a cramped corner where another family had parked their stroller, despite there being plenty of other available seating. The hostess made no effort to address the situation or ask that the stroller be moved. Service was poor throughout the meal. Our server only seemed to appear to take our order and was otherwise absent. Even our drink order took about 15 minutes to arrive. He never checked back to see how our food was, whether we needed refills, or if everything was prepared correctly. My side dish was incorrect, which normally wouldn't be a big issue, but we waited about 20 minutes while I ate my entire entrée without the side. I finally saw the server standing in the entrance of the kitchen and were able to get his attention. When he finally acknowledged us, he almost seemed surprised, as if to say, "Who, me?" During the long wait, we saw him spending time on his phone and chatting in the kitchen rather than checking on customers. We never saw him on the floor. I would understand if he was busy with other customers and visibly working on the floor. To make matters worse, the mashed potatoes were extremely bland, and there wasn't even any salt available at the table. It was empty. What made this particularly frustrating is that we had the same server a few weeks ago and experienced many of the same issues, slow service, little attention to the table, and long stretches where he was nowhere to be found. After a second similar experience, it no longer feels like an isolated bad day. The experience ended on an awkward note as well. Because the server was standing there holding the card reader while I completed payment, I felt pressured to leave a larger tip than I otherwise would have based on the level of service provided. Overall, the lack of attention from both the hostess and server made for a frustrating dining experience. The only reason I am giving two stars is because the steak was cooked perfectly. Burton's has a reputation for good service and food, which made this visit especially disappointing. read more

There is a reason Burtons is always so busy! It's truly delicious. They have a huge inclusive menu (the gluten free menu has plenty of options). This location is in in the newer section of Carytown across the street from Kroger. There is free street parking out front (Carytown style). On my recent visit with my mom for lunch, we were seated at high tops. I highly recommend ordering the crab cakes. They are really generous with the crab meat and they are so tasty. We shared a yummy strawberry salad and the crab cakes. It's a huge space, but it does get a bit busy. Service wasn't terribly slow, but on the slower side. They have womens and mens restrooms here. I have to say their bathroom wallpaper has to be among one of my fave bathroom wallpapers in the city (after Little Nickel lol). If you want yummy and filling food, Burtons is a good spot. read more

Came here for happy hour and was so surprised at how much I liked it! They have a fantastic happy hour special - with a lot of food options! We were able to split a Nashville chicken slider with chips (it was more of a sandwich size than a slider) and it was so good. The menu looks fantastic and there's something for everyone (lots of gluten free options for those who need/want it). The bartender was super friendly and gave some great suggestions on cocktails. Came in on a Wednesday at 8 PM with some friends. Was shocked at how crowded it was. Service was a bit slow, but she was kind and seemed to be managing several tables. Dinner on Saturday night after watching The Masters. We had a reservation, but were seated in the very back room, which felt like the kids table at Thanksgiving. No music, no chatter, bright lights... zero ambience. The food was generally good. My house salad was served without the advertised blue cheese, and my husband's Caesar was very underdressed. Both problems would be easily fixed except our server was so busy we didn't see him or anyone else in time to complain. Our salads were served at the same time as our appetizer, which made for a rushed meal. Speaking of appetizers, the cheesesteak spring rolls were the bomb. Our entrees (steak frites, short ribs) were very good. Steak frites was perfect, and the short ribs were tender, but under sauced and a bit dry. The accompanying English pea risotto was creamy with a hit of dill - very nice. We finished our bottle of wine in lieu of dessert. We have been to Burtons twice. There is decent parking in the lot behind it as well as street options. It is a very popular place and the bar was really crowded... unfortunately they sat the 4 of us right by the bar. It was so loud it was hard to hear across the table. However, the food and service were good. We had salmon and a steak. Both of which were good. The drink options are also good. The second time we went there- we were not seated near the bar but we were behind an obnoxiously loud table. unfortunately, the loud lady was like that the whole time. It definitely took away from the experience. But the food and service were good that time as well. When we go back, it will probably be a weeknight. read more

Burtons has a very nice atmosphere and cool vibe going. We really enjoyed inside dining area. Unfortunately it was too chilly outside for the patio. We had the Crispy Fish Sandwich (bronzed) and the California Chicken Sandwich. "Brozing" is their thing. Our server recommended that style of preparing although I was originally interested in grilled haddock. I decided to take her advice and I was not disappointed at all. It was delicious. She explained that bronzing is their version of blackened. I'm not a fan of blackened because in my opinion it can be too flavorful and overpower the main dish. But the bronzing was really delicious and I'd definitely order food that way again. Our server was very friendly and checked on us frequently. The best part about this restaurant is the ambiance. A close second is the bread service (they charge for it, though). A close third is we noticed the manager on duty actively checked in with many of the nearby tables. We also love that this is a scratch kitchen and that they have a ton of gluten-free options and appear to be very allergy conscience. The part where they missed out for us for the food. I'd recommend skipping the Chicken Alfredo. It's a breaded chicken breast. My daughters weren't impressed with their entrees either. My wife's veggie bowl was above average. Burtons is newer to Richmond but integrates well into the facades of carytown. The outside has a nice look to it and I like that they have patio seating too (when it isn't too hot). And the proximity to the parking garage behind is a big win too, not many carytown restaurants have that going for them! Great accessible restaurant in the area. The space inside is quite big. The bar is huge and definitely a focal point in the space, and the restaurant is quite big but pretty open. It was very loud when we arrived; we were dining with family and needed to be in a quieter setting, which they had a small back section with carpet that was a bit better acoustically. I would not have been able to hear a thing in the main seating area! The back area would be good for a big group / special occasion. The menu is pretty big and ranges across a variety of cuisine types, which made me skeptical. I love that they put intentionality into gluten free options and having a separate menu. The dishes range in price quite a bit, and for the price I was a little disappointed in the quality of food. I got the lobster and shrimp gnocchi which came in a pesto sauce that wasn't much of a sauce, and the seafood was extremely chewy and definitely not fresh. Other members of our group got the fish, which looked better but the vegetable and rice sides just looked eh. Desserts were decent. The chocolate cake was pretty good. The cheesecake was disappointing as it was served in a jar and more like a mousse than a good firm cheesecake. Overall the ambiance is nice here, and the service is good. The food is average and for the price I think you can get better quality elsewhere. Maybe I got the wrong thing? Would be interested to try the salads, sandwiches, or steaks! read more

Burtons continues to impress me. I went after work and arrived around 5:45PM, just before happy hour (HH) ended at 6PM. We ordered well drinks from the HH menu. I feel like they were a really good size. I also ordered a lychee martini. It honestly tasted more like a lemon drop instead of lychee. For the food items we had the HH General Tso skewers and Steak skewers. Both were super tasty and cooked well. The steak could have used a little more salt. I also ordered the crispy fish sandwich from the dinner menu. It was delicious! Everything is made fresh at this restaurant. I could tell the accompaniment like the pickles and pickled red onions and tartar sauce. We're all freshly made. The fish was also seasoned well. I loved it! They have fantastic service. The staff is attentive and always full of wonderful suggestions. I went in the evening so the lighting was low, but not too dim. Great for happy hour, brunch, or a casual evening any day of the week. I'm a fan of the pappardelle bolognese, steak frites, and the bread basket (I'm deadass bc it comes with olive tapenade). My family really enjoyed the firecracker shrimp, and the lobster roll. I'm a big chocolate fan and the seven layer cake just didn't do it for me. It was a little too sweet and not cakey enough. Maybe that's your jam, though. I love the service here. Every time I've been, staff has been patient (I've had either my parents or my children with me and well, I hope ya get it). We were at Maymont and decided to take the short trip to Carytown to try this restaurant during Easter weekend. We are so glad we did! No wait, no line, with no reservation! Our waitress (Storm) was top tier with energy like that i should have felt some connection(CAT MOM) she was awesome. My cousin always eat here so she ordered her regular (General tso cauliflower) which were bomb. I ordered the (Bread service) appetizer & baby .... The bread , the butter , the oil, & olives pure freshness & delicious. For the entree i went with the Veggie burger which indeed is the kind i prefer (handcrafted with rice & other ingredients) and sweet potato fries which were excellent at taste. My cousin ordered the parmesan truffle fries which were fresh and full of flavor. For my drink we scope over the menu but something about the Orchard Sangria pulled me into the right direction, the cinnamon/ sugar rim combo was exquisite and rich in taste as it clashed with the sangria.
