The Gold Hill Store is like taking a step back in history to the 1880s. It's a rustic, homey and friendly town gathering place. It has become a destination for visitors both local and out-of-town. ( Also, for local cyclist.) It has a full bar, coffee choices, and an assortment of baked goods. Their pizza is a customer favorite. If it's winter, to sit by the pot belly stove with a beverage is catharic. If it's the weekend, there will probably be music in the evening. Check it out!!

Best spot in Boulder County, hands down. Can't recommend the Willow Sandwich enough if you are looking for the best vegetarian sandwich around, but everything is always so damn good you really can't go wrong.

More than just a general store

There's something special about Gold Hill and at the center of it all is this place. One part general store, two parts bar and restaurant, and in all ways the heart of town, the general store is integral to the community. We love it here and we visit often, running errands in Boulder and then taking Sunshine Canyon up toward the mountains and home. You can order pizza and sandwiches pretty consistently. Sometimes there are quiches or desserts available. You can usually get a magic bar. The bar is pretty well stocked for such a small town and though you'll pay a little more for the privilege, this is a great place to get a drink and have a conversation. They also sell snacks, basic household items, and basic bike supplies (lots of cyclists come through Gold Hill). A special place worthy of your time.

The Gold Hill General Store is a must stop when in Gold Hill! They have delicious sweets, quiche & magic bars for brunch food if you stop in early in the day. They also have amazing homemade pizzas (take n bake or cooked onsite), paninis and delicious specials of the day. They have a wide selection of beers, wine, mixed drinks and sodas. Service is friendly & casual. Friendly dogs are welcome. Relaxing, sunny porches in the front and back. Highly recommended this small town store. Please drive slow through town.

This place hits the spot in the best way. Comfortable, personable staff, good food, nice selection of drinks, and an indelible part of the small town of GOLD HILL. Going up or down Sunshine canyon without paying even the briefest of visits is a missed opportunity.

Such an amazing place! Eclectic doesn't begin to describe this 100+ year old establishment. We've been here twice so far and will absolutely come back. This is a true general store, carrying staples for the locals, prepared meals and a full bar. Stopping here is a must for anyone visiting Gold Hill. Be sure to visit the back patio!

After a snowshoe stroll in Sunshine Canyon at Bald Mountain, we needed lunch and rather than return down to Boulder, we continued up the canyon to Gold Hill. I rarely go up to Gold Hill in the winter. I am a big fan of the town's primary summer eatery so I usually am having dinner there. But the General Store has a nice cafe in addition to general supplies for purchase by locals and visitors alike. It is a popular destination for cyclists doing the steep ride in the summer, as two in our party have done before. But I am not capable of such a ride. We were the only customers on this post holiday, very cold, day. The staff of one, was super friendly and helpful, and she heated up our selections. They were quite tasty. Among us, we were served some chicken green chile, a slice of quiche and a slice of chicken pot pie. I had the chili, and though a soup consistency, was very tasty. This and the other selections were enjoyed by the rest of the party as were the herbal teas and bhakti chai with almond milk. Yes, it is that kind of place. We sat by the wood stove, the only source of heat, which was finally revved up by the time our food came. We had gotten there just after opening so the place was still a bit chilly. Very quaint place and it can be very busy in the summer though only one other customer, a local, came in while we there.

Interesting little store. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before. We stumbled across this store when we were driving up in the mountains in Boulder. This little store is heated by an old school wood heater and there are little odds and ends that can be purchased here. We noticed there were some homemade pies that looked inviting. We tried two beers we've never heard before and just sat by the fire. This is a good place to stop in while up in the mountains.

So....this is not really a general store. They recently changed their sign to read "pub" instead of "store," and you can indeed buy a beer during the few hours they are open. They have a coffee menu too. You really can't buy anything useful here (NO toothpaste, snacks, asprin etc), just locally-made tea and jade jewelry. It's old, dusty, cluttered and it's been for sale for as long as anyone can remember, asking more than anyone is willing to pay for this tiny old dusty spot. There's a neat old wood-burning stove that serves as the heater (it's a very old building) and the mismatched tables, benches and chairs seem as old as the town itself. I was a little scared to check out the bathrooms, honestly. It's kinda neat to stop in for a beer if in the mountains, passing by and see that they're open, and they do have live music sometimes. They started doing a Pizza Night on Fridays but it seems that they kinda stopped, which is okay because the pizza was cooked who-knows-when then just sitting out on the counter (though they kindly offer to microwave it for you.) Just don't expect this to be a store, or a pub. It's not really much of anything right now. Maybe someone will buy it for too much money and turn it into something cool in this sleepy little mountain town....

    Snow isn't a problem.

That being said, it is a real shame they have not followed the lead of a major national competitor and removed the sale of cigarettes from their supposed health oriented business plan. They have filled all three levels of this former bookstore facility. The basement level is the vitamin, supplements, first aid and quasi medical supplies that you would find in other chains, offering both national brands and private store brands. Plenty of sizes available which seems to be a failing of the big groceries and discount box stores. There is no prescription pharmacy at this location. Being adjacent to campus, they are serving a population that generally receives University healthcare which includes their own, and very affordable pharmacy. The main level still sells CU gear as before along with school supplies, tech accessories and gift items. There is a grocery section including refrigerated and freezer cases of convenience foods. The upper mezzanine level includes beauty, personal care and household cleaning supplies. On opening day, there was plenty of staff and checkouts on the main floor and the mezzanine. I doubt they will maintain so much staff unless they attract a larger number of customers. The prices are higher than you would find at a destination big box but if you sign up for rewards membership, it becomes far more competitive. This is true of all such health chains. Today my member savings was over $8. Get rid of the cigarettes and I will go up a star!

There's not much that's low-sodium, for example, like you'd find in a larger grocery store. I was going there for the frozen veggies, which makes life easy with busy kid- schedules. Not always time to pick up fresh produce on the way home. TJs frozen veggies were reliably better than anywhere else. They had really sweet peas, as sweet as sweet corn, that burst in your mouth. Lately, the peas are so dry and tough-skinned they're inedible. The broccoli florets are woody. There have been times over the years they were out of certain frozen veggies, and that seemed disappointing, but it was better then buying a bunch and thinking I had them to feed the kids, but then finding all we had was inedible. The broccoli has been woody for a couple months at least. We stopped buying that, and stocked up on the peas, but now they're gross. Since I went for the frozen veggies (and would just pick up anything else that worked for us there), we don't really have any reason to go unless they get that straightened out. Somebody please give me a heads up if it changes again!

I am not much of a fan of the store's other products as I learned during some living time in CA when this company was dominant in the town we lived. Prepackaged veggies and fruits don't suit me, nor does processed frozen items. But they sure are the king of nuts. They have many forms of each where appropriate. Roasted or not, salted or not. Today we bought dry roasted and salted almonds, CA premium walnut halved and organic dry roasted and salted cashews. Sadly we forgot to check if their CA Thompson seedless raisins ( sun dried) were back in stock. You won't find better anywhere. For general groceries , my favorite store is just around the corner and my favorites for brand name product is in South Boulder. What these 3 stores have in common is quality products in the categories I use them for, exceptional staff and store cleanliness. We'll go back soon for the raisins.

But now all the chicken is in sealed packages rather than the fresh case. The staff has offered to open a package to sell only a smaller amount but I wonder how likely they will have time for this? A loss for me as I only buy for two people most of the time. Another change is that the olive bar is stand alone and no longer dished out into containers to grab and go. Much more chance of contamination from a different item from another bin. I still prefer this store for many things though both of the smaller Whole Foods location have a usefulness too. The previous in store location of Birdcall is now gone the the free standing location at Twenty Ninth Street Mall is still open and has seating a parking better than when it served here.
