Do NOT EAT HERE! Aside from the food being terrible, the service also follows suit, and not just referring to how slow it is. The entire kitchen staff was yelling at the top of their lungs and then proceeded to have a full blown water fight that unfortunately splashed our table. Food that was sitting under the heat lamps was also getting wet during their fun filled water fight. They gave us no condiments, perhaps it's because we figured the food was soaking wet, we didn't need it. Very unprofessional, I genuinely don't understand how this place is in business. I had the Rocky Mountain oysters (trumpet mushrooms) and the tamales. The RMOs were delish! I could have done with little more ranch but I had just enough to get me through the plate. The tamales were just so-so to me, not as much filling as I would expect & just not as flavorful as I was hoping for. Service was fine, atmosphere was alright - very diner-y. Service: 5 stars, super kind, understanding of us vegans and substituted everything we asked for. Food: 5 stars, absolutely delicious with nice portions, we got the veggie burrito and the veggie fajitas with no dairy, tip, if craving the veggie burrito, get the fajitas instead, the veggie burritos filling is the same as the fajitas, and you get more with the fajitas. The only reason this is a 4 star review, is that while the chef was making our burrito, they sprinkled some cheese in our no-cheese burrito, and they were advertised as a plant based restaurant when they weren't. Great unexpected plant-based diner in Colorado! As a vegan, I was thinking the only real restaurant choices outside of Denver would be Asian restaurants, so I was overwhelmed by the choices at the Golden Burro in Leadville. Everything is clearly marked as Gluten-free, nut-free, or soy-free. I got the tamales and my husband got the slopper. Saw the great reviews, been craving a rubin sandwich, that's it. Stopped in on a Sunday around 11:15, lunch didn't start until 11:30. Very polite staff let me sit wherever and wait until the kitchen changed. I wanted to try the maitake mushrooms but the server told me they were some kind of chunk product and not just fried mushrooms. She recommended the cauliflower wings instead and they were quite good. They were served with some celery carrots and what looked very much like ranch dressing but tasted, well, nothing. The Reuben sandwich was very small, two pieces of fake meat that looked like corned beef but didn't taste like anything at all. The cheese was gummy and bland. Surprisingly the sauerkraut was also bland, and the thousand island dressing looked authentic but didn't taste like anything at all. Given the above I probably would have the golden burro 4 stars, but I was surprised when the bill came. The server made it a point to tell me the total of my bill without showing it itemized. I added a generous tip and asked for the receipt. Only then did I realize that the original amount included a 5% service fee. I looked at the fine print on the menu and felt bamboozled. Very charming old school cafe feel, service was great Waitress greeted us and took our drink order within minutes of arriving. She was very helpful with the menu and made great recommendations. The kitchen brought our food to the table piping hot and it was delicious, I had the chimichanga with green sauce and my wife had enchiladas with red sauce. Happy to see the iconic neon sign light back up even if it's no longer the meat heavy menu it was before! Had delicious fried oyster mushrooms and tofu sushi roll for dinner! Deliciousness! The golden Burro historically was a Mexican Restaraunt and American food Restaraunt. That was amazing. However, recently , they changed up their menu to all Gluten Free, vegan! Wow! I'm impressed. It was delicious. Ever single bite I tried was incredible! From the vegan latkes (potatoes, carrots and zucchini), the vegan sour cream, applesauce, veggie soup & fresh French fries. We popped in for an early lunch and couldn't have been happier with our meals. I am dairy/meat free so this was a safe spot for me to dine. My spouse does not have any dietary restrictions but eats somewhat plant based. He loved the Breakfast Burrito and both of us wish everything everywhere was doused in that green chili!! I ordered Biscuits & Gravy and Huevos Rancheros. Although I do eat eggs at home, I was happy to find that the vegan "Just Egg" they use was well seasoned and a delicious alternative to traditionally made Huevos Rancheros. The worst meal we've ever eaten and yet we would go back. We paid $200 for food and nobody ate anything. A highlight to our road trip across America. We went here a year ago and my kids still talk about this place several times a week. I would go back. Thanks for being a highlight on our road trip from South Florida to Eagle, CO. I think they need to be much more obvious that this is a vegan restaurant. While we had lunch, we watched at least 15 families or groups sit down, read the menu, and then walk out. It was extra work for the servers to attend to people who ended up not ordering (not fair to them) and meant that service for the rest of us was incredibly slow, even though the number of diners staying and eating was small. Also, if you ARE vegetarian or vegan, it would be nice to know more readily that this is a place for you. Lunch was bland. Vegan food can be excellent but the attempt to turn diner classics into vegan dishes with no variation really just didn't translate. read more

I want to love this place. I don't. The new owners are friendly and well-meaning, but the food and service are poor. On our last visit, we ordered food to go. The restaurant was not crowded at all, and there were several staff members working, yet the food took forever. When I finally got the food and walked to the car, I opened the bag to set up to eat while we continued traveling. That's when I noticed they didn't include the sauted veggies. I went back to the restaurant, where they apologized and said the veggies were almost ready. Not so. Another long wait, while they took some frozen chopped veggies and heated them up -- either boiling water or microwave -- without ANY spices or flavor. Of course, I didn't realize this until we were on the road and tried to eat them. They were truly horrible. And expensive. Tasteless frozen vegetables in a Vegan restaurant. Ugh. That said, the veggie enchiladas are edible, if bland. Not many veggies, alas. Mostly corn tortillas, rice, beans and salsa. Their pastries are their point of pride. I tried a couple and found them very over-sweetened. One day when I grabbed a slice of banana bread to go, I felt sick and stressed the rest of the day from the wild sugar rush and crash. Am really sad to say that this restaurant does not seem to be focused on health or on customer service. After all their efforts to renovate the interior, they really need to focus on a healthier, diverse menu and much better service. I hope they rally and succeed. read more

The Golden Burro cafe in Leadville was the best best and most reliable breakfast cafe for early morning hunters in all of Lake County, but in 2020 was bought by new owners and is now a "Vegan Only" restaurant. To each their own I guess, but definitely lost a lot of customers with this change. As for the food, I'm sure it's good for what it is. The girl that sat us seemed friendly. The Decor really hasn't changed, much. They definitely put some work in updating anything that was worn out in the interior. 10 out of 10. Best vegan food I've ever had and if I didn't know it was vegan I wouldn't have been able to tell. We ordered the tacos al pastor, tostadas, tequila agave cauliflower wings and their special of the day was a Philly cheese steak and we ordered it over French fries instead. They were very knowledgeable of what is gluten free or can be made gluten free. Currently they do not have a dedicated gluten free fryer but in a few weeks they will have one.
