This place was amazing but what really made it more amazing were Debbie and Heather. I grew up on a horse farm and have also owned animals in the house since I was a child. For the past year I've been strongly considering buying an African Grey or a Cockatoo however am being very strategic and doing all of my homework before. Since I don't have much experience handling birds I decided to go to the Golden Cockatoo with my friend yesterday (who has experience owning birds) and I'm very happy I did. It was towards the end of the day when the staff was doing a lot of cleaning from a busy Saturday and hand feeding many of the baby birds. Debbie and Heather dropped everything they were doing (while still feeding the baby birds) to offer so much incredible information. The best part was they were so willing to let me handle any bird that was available for sale and that had the correct temperament for a novice bird person to get experience which of course made me fall in love with a 4 month old African Grey. You could tell they were extremely passionate about exotic birds as well as super knowledgeable. They were extremely helpful and truly made my experience what I was wanting and of course I've been thinking about this beautiful African Grey since I left. I would highly recommend the Golden Cockatoo as well as asking for Debbie or Heather. Extremely wonderful experience. Of course the gorgeous birds help but these ladies really made me feel at home and I left 100% feeling more comfortable and wanting one of these gorgeous birds in the very near future. Stay away from this store! I wandered in curious as to what they had for sale. The by the pound bulk food caught my attention with one in particular standing out. I believe it was their most expensive and had nuts and popcorn in it. So I bought it and brought it home and with it came a nice infestation of roaches. They were extremely hard to get rid of and my house had to be bombed. This meant my pets and myself went to a hotel for the weekend. Be very careful of their by the poun food. read more

I bought my princess (she is a queen of bavaria conure) in 2015 from Golden Cockatoo. I then bought my King (also a queen) in 2018 from them. It is now 2020, and I have been going to Golden Cockatoo for grooming, toys, and food since I got my little sunshines! I recently bought more cages, so they can enjoy the outdoors. Everyone there is very helpful and friendly! I probably bother Debbie too much with all my questions haha, but she is always there for my babies! They have a tremendous variety of different birds including macaws, greys, and cockatoos, among others. We bought a 4.5 month old female African Grey from this store. Debbie and her team TRULY CARE for these creatures' well being. These birds are properly fed and cared for, they are socialized and engaged, and the facilities and cages are clean. The bird was not cheap, but these sentient beings can live for 40-50 years (if properly cared for), and you get what you pay for. They Princess is happy, healthy, and well adjusted. DO NOT COME HERE! If I could leave zero stars I would. We booked an appointment for my bird to be groomed here for the first time. My dad brings our bird in on his arm like he usually does for all of her grooming appointments elsewhere. When making the appointment, we were never told that it was required to bring your pet in a cage. As my dad is stepping one foot in this place, a man behind the counter yells at him "YOU NEED A CAGE TO COME IN HERE". Not a hi, hello, what can I help you with?, nothing. Just pure rudeness. Not only does this place have DISGUSTING customer service, they lack clear communication and do not warn you beforehand that it is required to bring your pet in a cage. We've been to many other groomers that do not require you to bring your pet in a cage which is why my dad did not do so. Moral of the story, my dad left without even walking inside after being humiliated and disrespected in front of other customers. Stay far away from this place!!!! read more

Absolutely I would recommend!! Came here yesterday on a recommendation of a friend.. and first and foremost I have to give a HUGE recommendation and thank you for the care and evident true love Katie has for birds. We just moved here from CT in December and our African Grey parrot has only gone to our vet for nail and beak trimmings and she not only calmed our grey before the nail trim but throughout the whole process she kept her calm and was very gentle and did as good if not better job than our vet did ensuring our bird's nails were properly trimmed and not sharp. The owner and rest of staff were wonderful and totally helpful and as a bonus found a perfect clearance'd play-stand that we've been looking for at a great price! Came by being a newbie in the bird world and wanted to seek advice and guidance. This place is amazing. Super clean and they have a nice selection of bird but ALL the birds are friendly, healthy, and sweet. That goes along way. A lot of the birds are not in cages. Even the ones in cages run up to you to give affection. They don't have many to one cage either I loved that. I really enjoyed coming here. The people there are very knowledgeable. Just going to jump right in! I freaking love this place. I stopped by a year ago and looked around and came back a few months ago and got an umbrella cockatoo. I still have to visit her at the store since she's still not ready to come home. So I'm there a couple days every week. Debbie showed me her and I fell in Love instantly. I know she's in good hands there and it's an awesome feeling. These people give the birds so much love and it shows. Ruth and Ian are my people of choice to ask a million questions and they always help me learn new things about bird parenting. All the birds there are such sweethearts!! Also another plus is their toys are priced very well. A lot of pet supply stores try to beat you in the head but they don't and they don't try to push you to buy things nor birds. I almost forgot to add they have a good points system when you shop with them. I had been planning on getting a parrot for quite some time and Golden Cockatoo came highly recommended. My first visit there, I was able to meet some babies from a couple of breeds I had chosen and I decided to put down a deposit on a Caique. From that day until about a month later when we brought him home, I had nothing but positive experiences and I spent a LOT of time visiting with my new bird while he was being weaned off of formula. We dealt primarily with Debbie, but also had a lot of contact with Heather and Ian. Each of them was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and highly experienced. It also helps that they are all seasoned parrot owners and that they don't just work at a bird shop. Every single staff member besides them that I dealt with was also a pleasure to interact with and they all knew their stuff (and honestly, over the month of visits, I'm pretty sure I met every person that works there). Every time we visited, everyone was incredibly accommodating, providing me with a towel, treats, and toys so I could just focus on bonding with Squonk, my new Caique. Any questions I had were always answered cheerfully and thoroughly. Most importantly, on the day we brought him home, we stopped at a reputable local avian vet and he came back to us with a perfectly clean bill of health (the blood tests he ran took approximately one week, the DNA sex test took about two weeks). Additionally, Squonk was weaned effectively with no regression back to formula as well as coming to us with an adventurous appetite regarding new foods - I credit Golden Cockatoo for this because they provide a variety of fresh foods and such while they're weaning their birds. In the month that we've had him home, he's been an absolute joy and it's clear that his first months there were an overall positive, essentially giving us a head start on raising a well-behaved and well-socialized parrot. All in all, this was a great experience and Golden Cockatoo will be our primary shop for toys, food, and supplies going forward. read more

I would like to preface this review with the fact that we moved down here a few months ago from northern Virginia. Our white bellied caique was bought from an exotic bird store where the store owner loved all of the birds in the store and took exceptional care of them. He knew who we were and remembered our bird. When we had to leave, we trusted him to take care of her, and he always did a great job. We were looking for a place similar to that when we moved down here. We have been to Golden Cockatoo a few times to have our bird's wings and nails clipped, her beak filed down, and to buy her toys; we never had an issue. We boarded her for several days this weekend while we went away. We left her with food that we prepared, her favorite treats, and a request to have her wings clipped. When we picked her up this morning, her wings were not clipped. The store forgot that we brought food in with her (that they put in the fridge), so they only gave her their food. Interestingly enough, they cut up the grapes and apple that we brought in (stored in the same food bag), but they never gave her the other food. The final straw for us was that the employee we spoke with in the back said that the store-owned cockatoo in the cage next to her was sick, but nobody was sure what the cockatoo had. When my husband spoke with somebody from the store, they argued saying that they have no sick birds in the store. Why would we make that up? That completely ruined the integrity of the store for us, so we will not be bringing our bird back. My only problem is with the boarding. I would rather pay more money to ensure that my bird is being well-taken care of when I have to leave. We spent a lot of money on her, and she's a big part of our family. I found another bird place that is much more in line with what we experienced in northern Virginia. read more

When it comes to owning a bird, they say the bird ends up owning you, and you must obey. That said, as your new bird overlord commands, you should provide for it as far as food, toys, grooming and boarding. Never fear bird slave! I have just the place. The Golden Cockatoo is great. When it comes to providing services and supplies for our feathery friends, they are basically the only store around the area that I would recommend to anyone. They are packed chock full of stuff like toys, and food, and they groom and board your bird for cheap too. The staff is great at accommodating you, and they can let you play with all the birds for sale. Personally, I think that buying birds as stores has its pros and cons...The outright availability of birds is great, but the price sometimes is a little overinflated, they do have to pay rent and employees after all. Overall, this is a great place to find specialty stuff for your master. Recommended! read more

This place is great! All of the birds look healthy as well as happy. They're all well socialized and you can tell the employees really care about the animals and want them to have the perfect future homes. Every time I go there are fresh veggies and clean water in every cage. The whole place is clean (amazing for a bird store) and it's a charming set up. They even have little benches set up so you can grab your favorite bird and sit down for some possible bonding time for your future family member. Great shop and very clean. I drove from Miami to check out this shop and it was worth the drive. I am in the market for a new cage and wanted to check out their inventory there. I found the clerk to be very knowledgeable and helpful, though I did not find the cage I had in mind there. I will definitely go back as they have a wide selection of toys, food and of course birds. If you are in the market for a bird, cage or supplies this place should be on your list. Please note though, if you are considering getting a parrot, do your research. What a wonderful store, but more like a loving home for birds that just haven't yet made it to live with their forever families. :) We are from Chicago but have a place in South Central Florida. During a weekend Memorial Day getaway to Fort Lauderdale we sought out and visited Golden Cockatoo. We are the proud owners of a green Quaker Parrot named Ernie, and have long considered getting him a baby brother or sister. We were always hesitant with other stores, but as soon as we saw how the babies here are treated and met one of the "youngsters" -- a six-week old blue Quaker -- we fell in love. We were there as other families came in to visit their new babies who, like ours, weren't yet weaned, and we knew that the little one would make a great addition to our family. We were there on Sunday and came back Tuesday for another visit (they were closed for the holiday Monday) and put down our deposit. We also had the little one DNA sexed and made preparations to use the VIP (Very Important Parrot) Service to bring the baby home when he/she is weaned and ready in a few weeks. Debbie was wonderful with us, and the other staff members (as well as the owner Richard) took time to talk to us and thank us for our patience as they worked on the sale with their new POS system. We couldn't be happier with our decision and can't wait to get our new baby home! Debbie will be sending us photos and videos while we wait and they continue to work with him/her. BUYER BEWARE OF THIS BUSINESS!!!!!! DO NOT BOARD YOUR BIRDS HERE!!!!!!! My original post was on 4-4-17. I urge you to read it first!!!!! The ONLY communication we have ever received from this business is via a yelp response on 9-19-2015. Yes, that is correct. Almost two years later. Condolences do not wait two years to make. I find it funny how the owner is quick to try and defend against the claim of PDD. The owner stated that we were sold a disease free bird and he is correct. I never said he came to us with PDD. The owner then goes on to say our bird caught the disease from another location. The owner also says that our bird spent considerable amount of time at the vet and vets have sick birds. So, lets clear the air as to what this owner said and did not say and what my original review said. We purchased a disease free bird, that is correct, and we had it examined immediately. All was OK.. Yeah we have a healthy bird. We then boarded the the bird with Golden Cockatoo. So yes, the owner is correct in stating our bird caught the disease from another location AFTER the purchase.... IT WAS AT YOUR BOARDING FACILITY!!!!! We boarded our bird at your business AFTER we received it and the bird had zero exposure to other sick birds while with us until you had him. The reason our bird had to spend so much time at the vet was because he got sick AFTER being boarded at your business. DUH!!! Isn't it funny how this owner tried to place the blame back on us when our bird was never around other birds until it was at this business? Isn't it funny how this owner did not refute the FACT that they cut wings and nails, which does produce blood, and they DO NOT STERILIZE their equipment. The scissors sit on a table or go in a basket. They use the same towels that get blood and bird poop on it to restrain one bird after the next. When you take your bird to the vet to be tested and to have nails trimmed and wings clipped they pull the syringe, clippers and scissors out of a sterilized sealed package and before they take the bird the counter is also wiped down to sanitize it and towels are always new as the last one gets put into a bin. This is so that they know they are not contaminating the next bird with unsanitized equipment. This sort of thing should be common practice to a place that sells and boards birds. But I guess that is to much extra effort or maybe it cuts into the bottom line. It is much easier to just let one diseased bird contaminate others isn't it!!!!!!!! And how dare this owner try and make a claim that they could not take the cages back. There was NEVER an offer to as this is the FIRST communication from him two years later. We were into this Hyacinth Macaw and all the cages for well over $20K. Yes folks that is what we gave this business. So, if you want your bird to live DO NOT board your bird at this business!! They DO NOT sanitize their equipment and work spaces. That should be common practice!!!!!!! AND NO WE DO NOT ACCEPT YOUR CONDOLENCES, YOUR CONDOLENCES ARE NOT WORTH ANYTHING WHEN IT IS TWO YEARS AFTERWARDS!!!!! I cannot say enough about this store. If you are the parent of a bird or are thinking of becoming one in the South Florida area, then this store is for you. It's almost more than a store - it's like the home base of a community. They have everything you could need (and things you never thought you would need or want), and can get just about anything you could want otherwise at very reasonable prices as well. Their birds are not only very healthy and well taken care of, they're also very well socialized. I have not yet boarded my bird with them, however I would not hesitate because of the care I know they give and the cost is hard to beat (especially for the value). Now in that regard, the store is great in terms of what you'll find and prices and care, but ultimately is nothing out of the ordinary for top-tier bird stores. What really sets this store apart from the competition is the staff. Not only are they all very knowledgeable and know how to handle all parrots (as well as health, nutrition, behavior, housing, etc. requirements and knowledge), but you can tell that they all both care and love not only their own birds and those in store, but your birds as well. Not only do they know me, my girlfriend, and our bird by name, but they have gone out of their way numerous times outside of the store and outside of their work schedules to help us out and answer questions we have had. It is for all of these reasons (and more) that I gladly choose Golden Cockatoo as my local bird store. We live in Miami and willingly make the hour-plus long drive whenever we are able/need to, so hopefully that is some indication of the value of this establishment. read more

Let me start off by saying this is the cleanest and friendliest bird store I have even been to! Upon our first visit we were greeted by Debbie, who right away you can tell LOVES the birds! She spend quite some time with us, answering all our questions, addressing all our concerns, getting to know us and making us feel comfortable around all these birds. Over the next few weeks we had the pleasure of dealing with Ruth, who was quick to share her knowledge on each and every bird, and Ian who shared tips on handling and feeding the Caique we finally took home. We purchased a Red Front and a Queen of Bavaria Conure from Golden Cockatoo Our beautiful sweet girl died a few days ago in my arms . Weeks prior She had seeds in her stool We treated her with anabiotic's ,supplements formula and shots every five days . She was only 9 months old. We informed the owner of what the First of 3 vets suspected PDD we never even received a call back or a follow up on our girl. I again called back Informing she had died from PDD and was told the owner would call me back . He never did . There is no cure for this disease . The third Avian specialist finding also consistent with PDD . I would never recommend anybody buying a bird there. I now have to be watchful wondering if red front whom we also purchased there she too could suffer the same disease. My husband a year ago gave them 5 stars because we liked the play stands toys and options of toys foods well as the updates the workers on the floor would give us while Sugar was in there care . Since the passing and lack of any response or call backs from Golden Cockatoo He has since changed his review and told Sugars story. Sugar passed at 9 months of age we bought her home after she was fully weaned from Golden Cockatoo . I highly recommend any one purchasing a bird have the breeder or shop test through Avian Biotech or another testing facility .it's a simple 40 test anyone can do . Regarding your comment Richard 3 months have passed I left my # each time we called your comment on this yelp review is the first we have heard from anyone at Golden Cockatoo . You are mistaken . We sent Sugars X-rays blood work and records too one of the leading Avian Specialist on this disease whom happens to be in Ohio .
