I used both of my Memphis City Saver Coupon for buy one get one from my phone within a few weeks of one another because I got drawn back to the Midtown area. I love that this place was easy to identify as well as that they let me apply my coupons to take-out. I haven't eaten in the place so I can't give any comments about service, but they have always been nice and welcoming. It was fun walking around the area while waiting for my food to be prepared and I had fun both times I got take-out from here. The maximum spicy wasn't mind-blowingly spicy for me but I didn't ask them to destroy me either because I was sharing it with other people. This is my favorite spot for Indian food in Memphis. I'm not a huge fan of the buffet, a little too mild in my opinion. However, I love all of the individual dishes I have ordered. I was never a fan of Indian food... until a friend got me to try Golden India. It is far and away the best Indian food in Memphis. Since I started going to Golden India, I had the pleasure of getting to know some of the family that owns and runs the restaurant. I was heartbroken when the owner and patriarch of the family passed away recently. Today, our friend group had a get together there to celebrate the holidays. It was bittersweet not to have Mr. Singh greet us with his wonderful smile, but the food and service was amazing as ever. I've tried numerous things in the three years or so I've been going. Today, I had the chicken coconut korma and garlic naan. Both were absolutely incredible! Although we ate early to mid afternoon, the bread was literally served hot right out of the oven. It was light and airy but at the same time, perfectly crisp and seasoned with fresh garlic and herbs that were baked into the bread. Two of my friends had the buffet (one, a strict vegetarian) and they loved everything they tried. The other friend loved the chicken Fraizee, which is one of the chef's specials. My daughter insists on having the chicken tikka masala every time because she always loves it, and the same was true today. I also had some of the tikka masala and it was delicious. One of our friends always starts her meal with the mango Lassi, a mango smoothie. Even though it had been a while since we'd gotten together there, the waiter (and son of the owner) immediately prepared the smoothie as soon as he saw her come in! The rest of the table had the chai tea. I've had chai tea at several places and again, nothing compares to Golden India's. It is the perfect blend of spices steeped together into a creamy brew. It's the ultimate comfort beverage- think a hug in a cup! While today's experience was awesome, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I have also tried numerous items on the menu (mostly chicken), almost all of the appetizers (the vegetable samosas are an absolute must), the buffet (including several vegetarian dishes and desserts) and have gotten take away from there to bring home to my very picky husband. He is a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy, so I got the tandoori mixed grill grill and he loved it! The portions are always generous, the sauces are always complex with the perfect blend of spices and ample portions to dip their delicious naan, and the condiments served with appetizers are a flavor explosion. The restaurant (and restrooms) are clean with a simple, but elegant decor, that at the same time is warm and inviting. This place has been a mainstay in Overton Square. While other restaurants have come and gone, it remains a highlight. If you have been afraid to try Indian food, try Golden India. You'll be glad you did. I am. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go for Indian food. It's small and intimate but inviting. The buffet setup is small and efficient. They have the essential spinach, lentil, chicken, and lamb options. They also offer the normal menu options that I see some people taking advantage of. The staff are nice as well. I hate to criticize on public forums but I cannot help it. This is another OK place fr Indian food besides India palace. I would rate both of them equally bad. The price is not worth the quality, quantity, freshness and taste. They have a big menu, but taste of more than dozens of items is same probably because of the use of same curry (masala) paste. Nice cozy spot. Was in route to another spot but decided to try Golden Indian. Pleasant lunch but nothing to write home about. Rice was fresh, a veggie dish that was tasty, and rice need was pleasant. Best item was the samosa that I paired with mint sauce and tamarind sauce. Naan was dry. If you just need to eat, it is food. Worst customer service I've EVER received! I'm visiting Memphis for the first time and decided to get take out. After getting back to my hotel and checking through my order, I found a dish in my order was not made properly (there was no paneer in the palak "paneer"). I called the restaurant to ask for a refund for just the one portion of my order and for about 5 minutes, I had to listen to the man on the phone tell me that I was wrong and he "100% guarantees" that the dish was made properly even though he hadn't seen it. Only after I mentioned that I would be posting a negative review on the restaurant, did he even attempt to rectify the situation; and definitely not in the ideal way. After tasting the food, the best thing I can say is that it's mediocre at best. Nothing really tastes freshly made. I've eaten Indian food all my life and am very familiar with the cuisine. The food here tasted similar to the frozen dishes you would find in the grocery store. I would absolutely not recommend this restaurant and would definitely not come back ever again! read more

The location (Overton Square) is great and our waitress was very helpful with recommendations but the actual food was not very good. Given that our waitress had us order what she considers the best things on the menu, I'm not sure I would go back since I didn't like it...but the prices are good and other people seemed to be enjoying it. read more

When I would make a trip to Memphis from Ole Miss when I was in college I would frequently stop into this restaurant and enjoy their lunch buffet. This is a nice location and is a bit smaller than other area Indian spots. The buffet here was always good even though it had a bit of a smaller selection than some others it was always really tasty. I have always enjoyed my meals at Golden India and I look forward to returning. read more

Hmm, I wish I could give 2 1/2 stars. It was certainly not bad, but also certainly not the best Indian I've had. I went for lunch and got the buffet to try everything. I shan't do that again, as I found some of the items rather cold (and we were there at 11:30, which tells me it just hadn't warmed up from being leftovers from the day before). Don't get me wrong, "left overs" sometimes tend to be better the next day as all the spices sink in, but not quite so in this case. The service is rather casual, serve-yourself style. I, personally, quite prefer India Palace...or used to, it's been years since I've been. I'd suggest that you order off the menu...unless you need 2-3 plates of food. Otherwise, you're just paying extra for dishes you don't really care about and too much food to eat. It's alright. I think it would be cheaper if it wasn't in Overton Square, and I'm not sure I want to pay more for bad parking and "convenience." read more

I go here for lunch regularly (I have never ordered from the menu). It is better than India palace... the food is just better, more full flavored. The owners and servers are very friendly. Many of my Indian friends have stated that the food here is 'bland', or 'Americanized'. I am certain that is true... I hear the same thing from Mexican people about some of the Mexican restaurants. This is the best indian option in the midtown downtown area. There are 2 Indian restaurants in the area and this is the better one. But that doesn't mean that the food is great. The buffet is ok. It is a little bland for my taste. And the butter chicken is very meh. However, their chicken biryani is not the authentic biryani but it is very tasty and flavorful. We usually get it and have never been disappointed. The owner seems to be the most moody person ever, there are times he would greet and welcome and at times not even acknowledge your presence. Pretty weird!! But if you want to try Indian, and are limited to midtown/downtown, you can try Golden India. Like a previous reviewer mentioned that even if the food is bland to Indian palate and is Americanized, he thinks it is tasty. I've been to this restaurant many times, and I've never had a meal that was not delicious. Also, their portions are, in my opinion, quite generous, so you'll leave full and happy. One particular recommendation: the peshwari naan bread. It's made with raisins and cashews. It's nice on its own, or dipped into your curry. The decor is not super fancy or modern, but the people who work there are sweet, and they're always happy to help with questions about the menu. They have tons of vegetarian options, so that's a bonus. They also have some Indian bottled beers. I will keep going back here. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at golden india! tried the chicken coconut korma, the lamb madras, and lamb korma...all were delicious. we ordered medium spicy but next time might go mild on some of the dishes...they take heat seriously here, but that's a good thing in my book. the naan we ordered (one was stuffed with dates and raisins and nuts which was divine and one was garlic) were both served piping hot like they'd been made two seconds earlier. so tasty. will 100% be back to sample the rest of the menu or try the lunch buffet!! read more

This is by far the best Indian food in Memphis. When they were closed for remodeling for a month or so I tried to get my fill from India Palace (a former favorite) and Mayuri and they were far more bland, and some vegetables were canned (like the peas). You can't get better than Golden India. They change their buffet 7 days a week, mixing and matching favorite dishes like vegetable korma (my favorite), palak paneer, and tandoori chicken with gulab jamun and milk cake for dessert. You can always tell its better by its spices and has a more homemade taste. The family is super friendly and know their returning customers. One always jokes with me about my cracked iPhone. My favorite place in Memphis! I probably go at least once a month. A lot of people go to other Indian restaurants in midtown, but this one is the best in my opinion. It's small and quiet with a super relaxing atmosphere in overton square. I always go with vegetarian dishes out of preference but it's all good. My favorites are the shahi paneer, paneer masala, and mutter paneer. It's good mild, but absolutely delicious with a bit of spice if you like it. These dishes are creamy and my favorite comfort food. I eat here about once a week; I love it. They know me and my order. I just wish they delivered since parking is such a headache in Overton Square on the weekend. I would give the food five stars, but I decided on a four-star rating overall because it's a bit more expensive than it needs to be (and prices just went up a bit lately) and the owners can be a little stand-offish at times. The food here is by far the worst indian food I've had in Memphis. I ordered the vegetable samosa and the potato lacked flavor and was under cooked. It felt like it was heated on the microwave and served. The non vegetarian entree were substandard and a pain to eat. The service was not friendly and the person who took our order was curt. Walked in and immediately treated like they were bothered that we came in at 8:20. It was 85 degrees outside and they gave us water no ice. Asked for ice and they bring an overflowing cup and dump it on the table. Asked for iced tea that is offered on the menu and they said they don't have any. Took our order and seemed perturbed when asked a question about a menu item. Shrimp curry overcooked with charred shrimp. Asked where our garlic naan was and they bring burnt naan no garlic. This was the absolute worst experience with Indian food my family and I have ever had. Do not go here. All of the The chicken in the chicken tikka masala was not cooked at all. We told the server that that was the case and his response was that all white meat is undercooked. He said you have to use a knife to cut into the chicken because all white meat is like that......He then - rudely - finally took it back and brought out another chicken tikka masala. This place was horrible, when we entered we noticed that at PRIME LUNCH HOUR it was basically empty. Then when the waited came to seat us he kinda just pointed at a table. We have to GET UP to get our menus and plates. Our appetizer came and it was burnt, the bread was the best thing there. . The service is terrible. Also they didn't have soap in the washroom.
