I got the Shahi Paneer, achar/mixed pickles, and onion bhaji with the green and red sauces. The Shani Paneer came with a rich creamy sauce with shredded paneer and spicy. The previous Golden India sold and it is now "the New Golden India." Everything down to the naan is completely different. The dish I had was not inherently bad, but it came nowhere close to the chicken coconut korma dish I so regularly ordered. Also, the Naan is not as good as the old Golden India's. New owner is nice and attempted to accommodate me, but it just wasn't the same. I don't understand why this sudden change of ownership and flavor happened, but I am very sad that I may never have my favorite meal again. Tasty and Authentic! It was a family night out that didn't disappoint us! This was my second time trying Indian cuisine. I was turned off from another spot but my sister insisted this was the best of the best. Even though, it's on a busy strip...it's gives you a small homey atmosphere. It feels like you're in their home and they are serving you a part of their culture. The ordering was a little delayed due to it only being 2 servers for the whole restaurant. I think it's a family business which is okay. We ordered the panka and samosas for apps. The spices were spot on and everything was fresh. For the entree we order Chicken Korma, Tandoori Shrimp, and Shrimp Marsala. And of course, garlic naan...a must! Everything was delicious from the creamy sauce pair with the meat to the basmati rice! The only con, is I wish they would use a bowl to serve the rice. Some of the rice can't spilling on the table due to it being on a small plated dish. Overall, I still give it a 10/10. My family (total of 24 ppl) and I have been golden India customers for over 24-25 years. Countless weddings and birthday parties have been catered not to mention 6-10 visits a year to the restaurant for over two decades. It has changed ownership three times now and the new owner believes that reinventing the wheel for a continually run restaurant is the right direction. He lost our business in the first meal we had there. Food was GARBAGE. Old owner offered to leave all recipes and teach them but they decided to not take them on the offer. Prices went up & quality has gone to trash. Owner seemed nice enough so no shade on him personally but please save your money; go to India Palace for authentic North Indian food cooked by people from the region. What golden India is serving is not Indian and barely edible. The Chicken Coconut Korma is unique to Golden India and is the best dish I've ever had. I absolutely love this place, they're excellent about being true to their spice level. Do yourself a favor and order the Peshwari Naan, it's truly exceptional. OS are the other naan options, but that one is addictive. And again, I can't say enough good things about the Chicken Coconut Korma, it's so creamy and flavorful because of the cashew and coconut. The chicken is ultra flavorful and tender and their rice is seasoned with cumin and goes with it perfectly. I've also had their Aloo Gobhi, which is also delicious. The only thing I would skip is dessert because I recommend getting more of the Chicken Coconut Korma or Peshwari Naan instead. The desserts are okay, but not in the ballpark of those two. I've tried the Gulab Jamun and Pista Kulfi and wouldn't order either again, but I also don't really love super sweet flavors. Mango Lassi is good! They don't always have the coffee, I think, but it's good. The Kachumber Salad is good but a little weird and a lot spicy, it sneaks up on you. Overall, just go. It's so good and quiet and delicious, and their takeout is always perfect. I've picked up and ordered via apps, definitely try to call in to order and pickup or eat in, but you really can't go wrong. read more

The tikka masala medium spice is my favorite, not too terribly spicy but creamy and flavorful with a little kick. The sides are awesome. The food was not bad, but I learned my buffet skills are a little weak. Jason's Deli's salad bar is the range of my buffet knowledge. LOL If you're new to this restaurant, and you do the buffet, there are several rules/things to keep in mind. The plates are located next to the buffet so you don't have to wait for them to be brought to your table. You get nan (flat bread) with your buffet meal. If you walk away from the buffet, don't go back to add salad dressing with your actual food plate. Be sure to get another container for food safety reasons. Even if you only have one plate of food, you cannot take your leftovers home without paying a fee based on the weight of your food. You do not pay at your table. You pay at the hostess desk at the front entrance. The price was reasonable, but I couldn't take my leftovers without the fee, so I kind of feel like I paid full price for half of a meal. read more

I came here because the garlic Naan and chicken korma were on the list for top dishes to try in Memphis. We were walking through Overton Square trying to find it, but as we neared I could smell the fragrant spices. We came in through the back. It was set up formally with table cloth, cloth napkins and glassware on the tables. My husband instantly said, "Oh, I think this is going to be expensive." The total bill was at least $50. We came with our 2 kids but only the little one are some naan so the meal was really for 2 people with lunch leftovers. We ordered the fried mixed appetizer, chicken korma, shrimp Korma and mango lassi. The fried mixed appetizer cane with fried onions, samosas, and chicken. The samosas and onions were nice and crunchy. I don't actually eat fried onion rings but these were shredded onions and fried in a clump, so it wasn't an enormous piece of onion. Also in the beginning they give you a cracker type freebie with an herb sauce and a brown sauce. The brown sauce is slightly sweet and it's magic. I used it with the fried app as well as the cracker. Unfortunately the magic brown sauce could not save the chicken. It was so dry. The chicken and shrimp korma came with rice and were vibrant colors. The shrimp was spicy and you could see the pepper flakes. The chicken korma was mild and very creamy. All of the spices were balanced to where you were not overwhelmed by any one spice. There was a table near us with about 3-5 employees or friends of employees who were resting or relaxing, on their phones and laptop. I saw one person come out with a jug of orange substance and poured it into 2 glasses. I was watching and he left it there, then about 5-7 minutes later he gave it to us. I asked him if they made this and he said yes. I was dubious as I saw them pour it out of like a milk jug. They could have made the lassi and poured it into a jug...but it would have been difficult. Therefore I think it was commercial mango lassi. Also, it was lukewarm. That's definitely not how a cooling agent should be. Finally there was a communication issue. I asked the employee what each of the fried item was and he thought I wanted another order. Then it took a while to get the proper amount of to go boxes and the right kind of containers. I'm sorry but the korma should not be in a styrofoam box, it should be in a soup type container. The plus side was the 2 of the fried items, the brown sauce, garlic Naan and both kormas were delicious. The naan was fluffy but didn't have garlic flavor. However I dipped the bread into my chicken korma so it was fine. Also, the water kept refilling out water glasses. Don't forget to check out my profile! read more

Food is always great. Their spicy dishes are better than their mild ones so keep that in mind. Their naan is authentic, rather than garlic bread knockoffs you will find at other joints. I will say their desserts are underwhelming so maybe steer clear of those. They do take a while to make your food (cooked to order I guess?) but I promise it is worth it. This is yet another business I feel that gets nitpicked based on lack of timeliness but if you're not in a rush...why not enjoy the restaurant ambience? I ordered from Golden India via the UberEats food delivery service. This order was my first experience with food from Golden India. My order consisted of Mango Lassi, Garlic Naan, Karahi Paneer, and Paneer Tikka. I actively seek not to simply be a "hater" and criticize establishments on public forums without any positive feedback. But this experience tested my mettle! -Parts of the Garlic Naan were undercooked. -The Karahi Paneer (apparently a chef's specialty) tasted very bland and was incredibly sweet for a "Kadhai Paneer" entree. -The Paneer Tikkas were very oily (with a floating layer of oil), and tasted ridiculously sweet for a "Paneer Tikka." When I brought this issue up with the Manager over a phone call, I was met with denial, rude behavior, and was told that they could not do anything about it. Overall, the food tasted terrible and ruined my Friday evening dinner! I have eaten at numerous Indian restaurants across the US, but this experience makes it to my Worst 3. The Mango Lassi was the only item in the order, which was made to a satisfactory level. I do hope that this restaurant pulls their act (and food) together! read more

This place is the bomb. So flavorful and so much food!! We all had take home when it was over!!! We all had the tandoori combo, at various levels of heat. A little taste of everything! My favorite was the chicken. It was so tender and juicy!!! Desert comes with the meal, but only a couple of options, rice pudding, which was very soupy, and some sort of sweet ball. For years, I passed Golden India, and I'm not sure why. It couldn't be that it was in a decaying Overton Square because I regularly dined at Memphis Pizza Cafe. It also can't be that I dislike Indian food, as I was eating twice a month at the India Palace on Poplar. I now regret that decision, for whatever the reason. I missed out on years of solid Indian cuisine. I have begun to enjoy cooking Indian food in my house, usually subbing tofu for any meat dishes, and trying to stick more to the flavorful and spicy vegetable meals. As my understanding and appreciation for the cuisine has grown, I have likewise enjoyed to eat Indian out of the home to garner a greater appreciation for the culture and differences in style of cooking. Golden India is one of the better Indian spots I've frequented. I don't get the reviews on poor service. Every time I am at Golden India, the staff bends over backwards to take care of you. The water glass is almost constantly being re-filled. The meal comes out quickly, hot and delicious. They are always helpful to give recommendations, and will adjust the spice level to your preference. The naan is outstanding. Although I am not a vegetarian, I prefer the vegetarian side of Indian cooking, and the vegetarian thali gives you several smaller portions of your choice: one papadum, two vegetables, daal, basmathi rice, naan, raita, dessert, chutney and cofee/tea. What a meal. If I had to now choose between my former favorite on Poplar and Golden India, I will choose Golden India. Four stars, and already excited about my next trip. read more

A tasty place, but with weird -- dubious -- serving habits. We were a group of three who ordered multiple entrees (serving family style) and desserts. Much of the food was good, but not particularly terrific. However, the bhindi masala was a knock out! Perhaps too much onion, and not enough okra, but, the flavor was spot on. The rice was leftover and reheated (not cool). So what was dubious? We asked for more rice. The server wanted to take our existing plate back into the kitchen and put more rice on it. (Against health codes.) When I asked if she couldn't just bring us a new plate with more rice on it, she seemed confused, though she did comply. More disturbing was their hand-written receipt. I am not saying this was intentional or that it happens all the time -- but, for us, our bill was in the $70-range. Only on the hand-written bill, the "7" was written like a "9." My bad - I didn't double-check the math, and, I laid out a cash payment, including tip, based on this higher amount. It is only because I also needed a copy of my receipt (which they do not automatically provide) that she hand-wrote out another copy of the bill, with a "7" clearly written. I asked - "Oh, that's a 7? Well, then I left you too much money." She seemed a little embarrassed, and said, "Yes...." and handed the money back over. But clearly, she thought the restaurant deserved a 60% tip. read more

While most Indian restaurants in the Memphis area seem to specialize in cuisine from southern regions of India, this one focuses on the north (my preference). I noticed a few British Indian dishes on the menu which was sort of the northern "giveaway" to me - Chicken Tikka Masala being the absolute dead giveaway of British influence. I don't know about lunch, but on this night it was menu-only, which was fine. The food was very good: nice crispy papadums and chutneys at the start, followed by the aforementioned CTM for one of us and Chicken Madras for me. I liked the smallish feel of the restaurant. We were seated in the back, away from the larger groups. It was a nice, warm and quiet place to be seated on a very wet and cold busy night. read more
