Remember this cozy, cute place having better food years back. Recent trip is my last. Much better in food taste and variety are Curry Bowl and Mayuri, east off of 240...near Hacks Cross Road. Food here is bland, not delicious; even the tandoori chicken is swimming in an onion flavored sauce of some kind, not baked taste. Selection is limited and customer service so-so....my VISA card (they don't take AmerEX) was declined. Why? I found out later he typed in the wrong code. Tried this restaurant for the first time tonight. Didn't start too well. The papadum they brought to start had bugs - ants I think - crawling on it. I took it back and pointed them out. No apology - no comment - nothing. For some reason we stayed for dinner - which was tasty but won't go back. Bigs crawling on my food without comment or discount was unacceptable. I sampled a few different dishes and I was not blown away by the flavors. The food was overall tasty, and the spice level was what I expected, but I have had better Indian food. The dish I ordered was a Lamb based dish, and only one piece of Lamb was as tender and juicy as one expects from Lamb. The rest of the Lamb simply did not impress me, being hard or rubbery and lacking flavor. Luckily the sauce on this dish and others I tasted were quite good. I normally order chicken, and perhaps would have had a better experience if I did so this time as well. Since moving to Memphis we have been narrowing down Indian restaurants to frequent after having such great places in Providence. Golden India is on top of the list so far. We ordered the usual chicken tikka masala and chicken curry, two of the familiar favorites. If you mess that up then what can you say about the rest. It was spiced very well; mild was mild and medium was medium. They have some authentic selections that you usually don't see on some menus. That was refreshing. The hours for the lunch buffet are until 3 on here, which should be changed. I arrive to the restaurant before 3, but after 2:30. Sign is still on, door is unlocked, and all food is still out but I wasn't allowed to eat in. I was told I could've gotten to go for $5.95 per pound, but that's not what I came to do. I'm not going to stop going because of this. I've always had a nice experience here and enjoyed the buffet and dinner. It was just an inconvenience. As for them being open until 3, the hours on the door say 2:30 and I believe they will go until everyone has cleared. A friend recommended Golden India, and I haven't been disappointed. We had the lunch buffet, and it was reasonably priced with a good selection and delicious. The service was friendly and relaxed; I didn't have to wait for anything, but we also weren't fussed over, which I prefer. Bad customer service! Got there around 2:30, now first of all we had to eat the buffet. Around 3:10 they basically put me & my mother out before we were even done with our food. Noone told us they were shutting down at 3. Make sure yall ask for times before you start eating. As for the food it was decent, not the best naan. But again I did eat from the buffet. read more

I like Golden India... I'd venture to say it's the best Indian food in Memphis. The samosas are okay... I wish they were better since I order them every time... but they're just okay. If you want to try something that is different than the typical Chicken Tikka Masala... go for the Chicken Patiala and Bengen Bharta... you won't be disappointed. Very friendly staff... sometimes the restaurant is a bit warm (especially sitting on the side that is closer to the restrooms), and apparently they have a buffet for lunch, which I've never had. I love Golden India!! This is our go-to Indian place. I always get the Lamb Vindaloo and Carter always gets Chicken Coconut Korma then we split some Naan (Garlic and Peshwari sometimes **we can be pigs**). We've had other things but when you find something you love sometimes you have to just stick with it!! We both add medium-hot heat and we start with a couple of Vegetable Samosas. Golden India makes the best Indian food in the Mid-South. At first glance, you may not like that the restaurant is small or that the alcohol choices are limited, but what sets this place apart is the quality of its food. Great Indian food starts with A) great naan and B) great rice. The staples of the meal have to be spot on before you even get into the quality of your selected dish. Not only do I feel like Golden India has more consistently excellent staples than any other restaurant in Memphis, I feel like it can go toe to toe with some of the better places I have been to in cities like New York and Chicago. As for the dishes, I highly recommend the mild or "medium" (spiciness) korma (chicken for meat eaters or vegetable for vegetarians) and the murg makhani (rich chicken dish) as a starting point for your first visit. Vegetarians could also go for the palak paneer. The last thing I would say is that the staff have always been very effective. I have been going to Golden India for the last ten years, and I have yet to have an order mix-up or any other sort of issue.
