Worst food ever. Used to like this restaurant. This was extremely bad, could not eat my selection of Chop Sues. How can this be screwed up?

I have been Golden Phoenix customer for several years now. I love the food and have recommended them to several of my friends and family. I frequently enjoy the combination luncheon plates. My favorites are the egg rolls, Almond Boneless Chicken, shrimp fried rice, and the shrimp egg foo young. I love the staff and their friendliness and will highly rate them a 5 star. read more

My first sign should have been when I first walked in and a woman was flipping out on the staff. I still got seated since I had been coming here for seven years. This has been my favorite Chinese restaurant at the $10-$15 price point. After being seated it took about 10 minutes for someone to notice. I didn't get offered a drink, just asked if I was ready. I ordered my usual and tried ordering a beer. This is when I found out the restaurant was under new ownership since the liquor license had not transferred yet. When the food came out it went further downhill. The soup was ok. The egg roll had an odd taste I could not quite put my finger on. The fried rice was burnt. The chicken subgum chop suey was reminiscent of the time I had attempted the dish from scratch myself. (That didn't go well either). To cap off the evening I opened my fortune cookie only to find I had no fortune. I have to find a new Chinese food place now. read more

We've been going to golden Phoenix for over 20 years now. The new ownership seems to be doing an awesome job. The interior is extremely outdated but the food and service more than makes up for it. Best silver needle noodles I've ever had, love the shrimp eggrolls and dinner rolls to name just a few of my favorites. Fun knick knacks and fountain at the front for the kids! Haven't been here for nearly three years and decided to give it another try...and it looks like it will be another 3 years. Place was pretty empty, with the 3 servers matching the tables eating. That didn't mean we were tended to. Our food took forever and no one ever checked on us. The food was subpar and didn't match the price. On top of that there were two young kids running around screaming the whole time. I believe they were children of one of the waitstaff/owner? They played tag most of the time we were there, with periodic stops in the kitchen - which might not have been a problem, but for the girls hacking cough. Pretty gross experience. I just stopped into the Golden Phoenix for a quick lunch break. I usually got the Mongolian beef combo at most Chinese places I go to so I decided to give it a try here. Bad idea, it was nothing like Mongolian beef is supposed to be at all. I'm not just comparing it to one or two other Chinese restaurants; I have tried many different places in my lifetime ordering the same thing and for the most part it's made the same way. This stuff tasted like something you would feed a dog and it was mushy and soft. Reminded me of roast from a crock pot. The egg roll was good, but the fried rice was the worst I have had in a while. It was very salty and tasteless. Needless to say, if this dish was prepared anything like the rest, don't go here. Not worth it. Go to Shangri La next door instead, they have the best Chinese/ Cantonese/ Mandarin food in Michigan. read more

Every time i give the Golden Phoenix another try i am constantly let down. We ordered chicken low main and almond boneless chicken which was just ok. The problem was they must of ran out of cartons so they packaged it up and wrapped the order in bags so the sauce was spilling out all over the place. My car seat had sauce on the seat. Yuck!! When i opened my chicken low main it was filled with only low main and very little chicken. Wheres all the chicken? One of the main reasons why i order from here is because i love their hot fresh sweet bread rolls and sizzling rice soup. I could just eat that for a meal. The wait staff has worked there for years and i feel its time for them to retire because they move so slow. I ate here over the summer with my mom and desert came with our meal. Our waiter literally gave us 1 table spoon of ice cream each. We laughed so hard my stomach was hurting. The owner of the restaurant heard us laughing and was nervous we were going to make a scene in front of the other customers so he gave us more ice cream. read more

We had dinner here, big mistake! It took forever to be greated by the waitress, we soon discovered the reason, she was taking on her cel phone while waiting tables! Our wonton soups came out room temperature and the wontons were falling apart from being so overcooked. Our garlic beef was 3/4 green beans, all the description said was garlic beef, not green beans with a few pieces of beef. All the portions are small for the price, the food was room temperature, and loaded with MSG. Never again! read more

Awful, bland food. The Olive Garden of Chinese food. So many great Chinese restaurants in the area it's hard to understand why anyone would eat here. The owner is extremely rude. My last visit was a carry out for a friend that had surgery and specifically asked that I order from Golden Phoenix. I asked for extra hot pepper and was charged. Worth it to at least have some flavour. Shangri La is right down the street and a much better choice. read more

I don't really know why this place has such a high rating. I ordered lunch for pick up, I got the almond chicken combo or the #1 as the lady on the phone clarified, as well as egg drop soup. When I got home I definitely did not get what I ordered, instead I had a few pieces of fried chicken with what I imagine was sweet and sour soup. The egg roll tasted incredibly fishy for some reason (way gross), I had a small chicken bone in my fried rice, which tasted what ever even with soy sauce. The egg drop soup was, no joke, neon orange. I'm not overly picky about Chinese food, and I can understand getting an order wrong from time to time. But there was absolutely no redeeming thing in my order. Total waste of money and time. The employees were very nice though. So I guess there's that. read more

Been wanting to go to Golden Phoenix for a long time. Finally went tonight. Food was cold, customer service was terrible. I ordered a dinner and it did not come with the broccoli it showed in the picture, and they told me I had to get the full dinner not the combo to get the broccoli. The combo came with tea and I was not given the tea either. I agree with post that they act like they don't understand, but they do. The food was below average and the service was even worse. They did not care, just brought me the bill. I won't be going back. Wish I had read the reviews before I went! read more

We eat here quite a bit. The food is very traditional. For the price, I am a fan.

Multi-course meals, delicious food, good waiter service, and the hostess was calm and collected on a very busy night. The decor needs some help, but the great food keeps your attention away from the decor. Best broccoli beef I've ever had. read more

Terrible Service. The waitress brought the wrong soup when I requested that she provide the one that I ordered she preceded to argue with me. I actually had to get the help of my dining partner to let her know that I did in fact order the soup that I was requesting. Stay away from Golden Phoenix. Ordered takeout -informed 1hr 20 min wait time. Went to pick up food on time. No one made any effort to speak with me or acknowledge me. Went home. An hour later received a call letting me know my order was ready. Two hours to make chow mein and rice? Needless to say, I won't go back. Try China King instead!!! read more

terrible food, terrible service. awful ambience. the waitress was rude and loud. sneezed all over the place and didnt think it was necessary to use a tissue. the shangai chow mein was revolting and the chicken was spoilt. the egg roll dripped of oil and was clearly refried. the szchewuan chicken was awful. a bad experience. avoid it unless you are willing to get sick and rush to the nearest ER. read more

We've been going here for years! Their food is old school Chinese and it is awesome!! We love their Almond Boneless chicken, Yang Chow Fried Rice and Egg Rolls. Even their white rice is better than any rice I've ever had. I never go to any other Chinese place! read more

Blah. Chinese food from the mall food court is much better. Asked for extra spicy and there was no heat at all. The fried rice was just rice tinted with soy sauce and the pork added tasted like the refrigerator (you know how leftovers absorb other flavors). No other ingredients were added to the rice. My husband and I hadn't been to Golden Phoenix for a while. Decided to go on a Saturday night. It was not busy. A few minutes after walking in we were seated. Decided what to order, but after 11 minutes not even an acknowledgement from the waitress. After a few minutes the snarly faced waitress brought us our water and said she would be with us in a few minutes. She then proceeded to take a tray of dirty dishes to the kitchen, which told us we were not as important. At that point we decided if she wouldn't take our order in the next five minutes we would go elsewhere. She finally returned from the kitchen with a tray of food for the customers next to us. By the looks of their table I thought they had already eaten. Obviously not. They asked for fresh water because theirs had gotten warm. We then left never to return again. read more

Well, my family has lived in this area since the fifties. Golden Phoenix was always regarded as an excellent choice for Asian food. We couldn't find our paper menu so we looked on line for the menu and also saw the fairly negative reviews. We decided to think carefully about our carry out meal and add our thoughts to those already written. Our overall rating was a three. We ordered egg rolls. They were nice size but relatively uninteresting. I think there were some tiny shrimp in mine. The rest of the egg roll was OK to not bad but certainly not very interesting. I had Hot and Sour soup. The portion was very ample to large and over all, it was quite good. We split an order of Sesame Chicken. The portion was large, the chicken was good but unfortunately the sauce was burned. This made the overall flavor bitter. The fair was generally OK with the exception of the burned sauce on the Sesame Chicken. That was inexcusable. So there are ample portions, average to descent taste and an dish that shouldn't have ever been served for over $10.00. We will probably look elsewhere for our next Asian take out. read more

If I could give "0" stars I would. I was treated very poorly here by my waitress. I was craving egg rolls and won ton soup so I came here since my family and I have been coming here for over 25 years & this is really the only Chinese restaurant that I order from....I first ordered hot tea & once the waitress brought it out, I ordered the egg rolls and won ton soup. The waitress then asked me was I going to order an entree as well and I said that i only wanted the egg rolls and won ton soup for now. She then told me that I could not only just order that and I had to order something off the dinner menu. I told her no thank you & that I did not have a taste for anything else. She told me that she would not serve me but I could order it for carryout or at lunch time. I told her that I have been coming here for over 20 some years and I have never been told this before and have never in my life been treated this way at a restaurant. I told her that if I can't just have what I ordered then I didn't want anything at all. I asked for a manager and she told me that she was the manager. I gathered my things to leave & She told me that I had to pay for my tea and I said that I did not drink any of it and I refuse to pay for anything if I can't be served what I wanted. I was extremely confused because I ordered something off of the menu and I was being told that I couldn't order just that. There are NO restrictions anywhere on the menu saying that I can't order just soup and egg rolls for dinner & that I Could ONLY order a dinner entree during after a certain time. Just terrible. I am African American and I feel like I was being descriminated against. I politely got up and began to walk out of the restaurant as she yelled to me that I had to pay for the tea (that I didn't drink). I ended up going next door to Shangri La at Orchard Mall and enjoyed just what I wanted, an egg roll and a won ton soup, which was delicious, they served me exactly what I wanted with no problem and the service was amazing. And I left an AWESOME tip. I also told them about my experience at Golden Phoenix and they apologized on their behalf and told me that I am welcome at Shangri La anytime and they will gladly serve me whatever I want. So thanks to the poor service I received at Golden Phoenix, I found a new favorite Chinese spot. I will NEVER visit the Golden Phoenix location ever again and neither will my family and friends. I will be sure to spread the word on how I was treated. I still can't believe that this actualy happend to me. Took motherinlaw for her birthday lunch. She enjoyed the restaurant before the new owners took over. I have been vegetarian for 30 years and have had traditional meat dishes substituted with tofu. I ordered general tso combo and asked for veg. soup, spring roll, and veg. fried rice . This request for vegetarians is not unusual...The waitress said ok about the tofu instead of chicken, and pushed for me to get white rice instead of the veg fried rice which she said would charge me $2.00 more ..I decided on the white rice and was able to get a veg spring roll instead of meat. The egg drop soup was salty..but edible. When she served my meal, the plate had unusually large blocks of tofu with a sauce over it that looked like soy sauce. General tso chicken is served with a lighter brown to orange color sauce and with broccoli. I asked the waitress wheres the broccoli? She replied you dont get broccoli when you order lunch...only at dinner! I was so taken aback with that response! I said you mean you alter the dish at lunch time only? She left and I reluctantly took a bite. The only way to describe the taste would be compared to a spoiled soy sauce. I put my plate aside and when the waitress returned she asked me whats wrong? I said I didnt care for it, and she went into her rant you dont get broccoli at lunch time and look at the dinner price...I said lunch portions are smaller, and I never have been to any Chinese restaurant where they take out an ingredient and put it back in for dinner time because it cost more. She continued tp talk in her language to the manager who said the same thing and I as a customer should know this! Furthermore the waitress came back and told me she did me a favor for my veg.options., and she was charging me for the soup but not for the dish. I can only imagine for meat eaters the quality of chicken or beef they serve. Heres the line that really got me...she said you only get 5 pieces of broccoli at dinner time! So i said you cant put in half that amount for lunch time? Beware of this place...if broccoli is a premium commodity, what is the quality of the meats they give you at lunch time or dinner time? I have been coming to this restaurant for at least 2 decades. I used to go there when it was originally on maple and telegraph where the BMW dealership is. Here is the bottom line as to why I WONT go here anymore. Ever since they changed ownership years ago, the business started a steady DECLINE in every facet of a restaurant. The food was becoming less and less edible and of diminishing quality, the service was getting slower and more tired, the decor and ambience began a lifeless and outdated decline, but most importantly the new owners became a disaster. They are very rude and arrogant and are cutting every corner they can. I cant trust that the food im eating is what they say it is anymore. When i tried to complain, they were very defensive, rude and I actually got into a shouting match with them. I miss the old owner, she was a kind and friendly lady who always came and spoke with us for every meal we had. she loved her customers. The multi-decade streak is over and I need to lose weight anyways! They don't get 1 star because thats just too brutal. Oh and btw, my favorite soup the sizzling rice soup, used to have recognizable pieces of meat, now it looks and tastes like gray colored spam. beware! read more
