I never have left a Yelp review, but I was very upset with my meal, I figured it was necessary. I came here after craving Chinese food and my sweet and sour chicken was raw. I showed the waitress after I lost my appetite and she goes "oh well I still have to charge you for the egg roll and soup" that came with it. And now I feel sick. I normally get one of the lunch specials, and the waitress makes sure if I want the Bowl of Egg Drop I am not overcharged. She over charges me $ 2.15 She's the boss. Explained to the wife, what took place. Lunch time & Dinner time now, we go to P. F. Changs Somerset Night & Day. Granted 3K-4K later, at Changs never have had an unpleasant experience. Moral of the story is I guess pay the $2.15 to the rude owner, or have an enjoyable experience elsewhere. Pay a few dollars extra and have great experiences. Golden Phoenix you always see someone complaining. So unfortunate that they don't read there YELP reviews. Maybe they just don't care. Yin is a great waitress. The other waitress that blames you for your order being wrong is horrible. I use to go in and if I saw her, I would leave. To many other options to be mistreated at this establishment. This has got to be the worst Chinese restaurant in the metro Detroit area. While waiting for my carry out yesterday, I watched the very rude woman who works here fight with 2 customers. Then she completely messed up my order and didn't give me half of my food. The first was a very nice woman who was telling me that she ordered a large carry out yesterday and ordered an extra shrimp fried rice for her to take to work today. When she opened her box at work today, there was no shrimp and it was all pork. She said she called up to the restaurant and spoke to the woman and told her. The woman that works there was able to find her receipt and said no problem, come back up here and we will replace it for you. She even remembered taking her order. When the woman got there and handed over the pork fried rice, she started arguing with her.. she told her that she remembered when she ordered the food yesterday and that she asked for pork fried rice. The woman then explained that she has been Muslim her whole life and would never ever order pork fried rice. The woman that works there then told her that she was lying! Like the woman said to me, it's not like she's coming up there empty-handed. She not only has the food but she has the receipt as well. So then the next person she started a fight with was a little old woman. Mind you, you can't even go into the restaurant which is fine. They make you walk up to the front door and stand at a table and if your food is not ready, they tell you they will bring it out to your car when it's done. And this woman had already paid online. The woman that works there yelled for her to come pick up her food from the table and she asked the woman who works there if she could just put it in her trunk. The woman who works there actually put up a fight about it, rolled her eyes and said something about the woman being lazy. I could not actually believe what I was seeing. I actually had paid for my order online as well and told it would be ready at 6:30. Having owned and worked in restaurants my whole life, it was blatantly obvious that they lost my ticket and the food had not even been started. So when I was finally called to the table to pick up my order 25 minutes later, I thought the bag looked a little bit light. She said it was all there and thanked me for being patient.. so I took the food home, opened the sealed bag and half of my order was missing. I called up there to complain and she had the GULL to tell me that she gave me 2 bags. I reiterated our whole conversation when I picked up the bag and she kept telling me I WAS LYING! She kept insisting that I was given TWO BAGS! I told her I didn't mind and could come back up there and get the rest my order but she was insisting I already got it! I'm not mentally incompetent nor poor so I would have no reason to try and screw over a Chinese restaurant. But given the way you treated your other customers before I got half of my food, that just shows you that you are stingy and a bad business owner. If you hate your life and your job this much, find something else to do.. Because there are plenty other Chinese restaurants in the area that treat their customers 105% better than you do. read more

I used to love this place. Over the last year or so the food keeps getting worse every time we order carry out. I'm really disappointed.

This is not gourmet Chinese food. This is your parents' Chinese food and the Chinese food of your youth. Go expecting that, and you will be pleased. If you're looking for something else, I honestly can't tell you one way or another, because my eyes don't make it much farther than the traditional Chinese food items I was raised on. This is my go to place for traditional Chinese food. I almost always do carry away from here. The food is very good, portions are quite large and the staff is very nice.I'm a huge fan of their eggrolls and the almond boneless chicken. The chicken broccoli is also exceptionally good.We went there last week and dined in for the first time. No worries at all. read more

The Golden Phoenix is in a strip mall just kiddie corner from The Outback restaurant. The parking lot is quite large, but of course this parking lot is also for other shoppers. Once entering the Golden Phoenix it appears a little outdated. The restaurant is on the smaller side and the tables are almost on top of each other. The servers - some can talk English, but others I don't know if they understand or not! The GP has 2 tables that accommodate 5 - 6 people, all others 2 - 4 people. So, if you are a large group you may want to go over to Shangri-La which is at the left or right depending on which way you are facing of GP in the mall and has an extra large room for groups. The food is good, large portions. Usually I go with 4 other friends and for 5 of us we order 4 entrees. This is enough for us and usually one person has a meal left-over to take home. The egg rolls are good, soup - I don't know, usually I don't have this, and the entrees are good, not exceptional, but good! My friends love the Peppermint Ice Cream and the Butter Pecan ice cream. They also bring over fortune cookies which have lame sayings inside - they should rename these cookies to Chinese sayings or something cookies. All-in-all I will more than likely go back with my friends due to it being in the middle!!!! read more

A neighborhood strip mall Chinese restaurant that is under new ownership. It flourished by serving mass quantities of old school Cantonese food to a crowd who likes familiar bland food. If you want Almond Boneless Chicken or Egg Foo Yung, this is your place. Plus you will get ice cream and have leftovers for lunch the next day. If, however, you want flavorful, healthy or interesting food, there are so many better choices within a few miles. Golden Phoenix has the best Egg Drop Soup, super crispy egg rolls, and very tasty steamed rice! I strayed from my usual (Sweet & Sour Chicken) and ordered the Garlic Eggplant... I thought it was bland and uninteresting. Perhaps you might like it but I certainly don't recommend it. They had Peppermint Ice Cream for dessert which was delicious and made me forget the Eggplant. One of the worst food experiences of my life. We ordered carry out and had to wait in the lobby with a few other people picking up meals for a while. When we got home we realized that we were missing an entire meal. I called back and the person was very rude and when I asked if I could come get it, seeing as how I already paid for it, she said okay and hung up. We went and picked it up and when we got home and unpacked everything and it was odd. The orange chicken was in two different containers, one with cold chicken fingers, one of which was raw in the middle, and one with what I assume is supposed to be the sauce it's cooked in, which was just bland broccoli and orange soup. The general tsos I ordered and had to go back to get was weird and sour. It just tasted like vinegar. Also after I had to go back to get it i was still missing the rice that was meant to come with it. The potstickers are dry and bland. The egg-rolls just taste like dirty bean sprouts and old shrimp. We also got some sort of weird sweet bread with everything. Not sure how they managed to mess up white rice but it tastes like fish. I'm still hungry and now just going to throw away almost 40 dollars. Don't waste your money on this place, they clearly don't care about the food they're making here or the customers buying it. read more

Old school Chinese-American. When I say old school, I mean both the food and the decor. Dinner entrees come with a ridiculous amount of food. First, they set down fried wonton strips with two dipping sauces. Then you get your choice of soup. After that, you get an egg or spring roll. And not just an egg roll, but an egg roll as thick as your forearm. Then you get your entree. With your entree, for no apparent reason, comes a large yeast roll more commonly found in homestyle/southern restaurants. After dinner comes a scoop of ice cream (I recommend the peppermint), and finally, with your check, comes the fortune cookies. As for the food, the hot and sour soup was very good. The egg roll was dry and tasted a little odd. The vegetables in our entrees (Hunan Chicken and Green Beans with Black Bean Sauce) were a bit overcooked, and the sauces were a little on the thick and greasy side. The Ginger Beef had a nice, strong ginger taste, but the beef had a weird texture to it. The yeast rolls, however, were delicious. If you're looking for a lot of food, you will be happy here. Otherwise, I think you can find slightly better Chinese-American food in this neighborhood. read more

Have ordered take out and eaten in. First, the eat-in experience. Restaurant is a little run-down, nothing you can put your finger on and not bad, but definitely a little dated. Ordered the sesame chicken ($14.95). Comes with soup, egg roll or spring roll, hot tea, and dessert. Was told the wontons in the wonton soup have chicken in them. Companion asked what kind of meat was in the egg roll and was told chicken. When egg roll arrived and was cut open, tiny shrimp poured out. Showed waitress and she just said, "Yeah, shrimp and chicken". No offer to provide a replacement vegetarian spring roll. Odd. Sesame chicken was okay - nice quality white meat, but the flavor wasn't to my personal liking. Companion enjoyed the chicken with pea pods and mushrooms which is why this is 3* and not 2. Steamed rice came with the meal too even though menu didn't mention. Good. Dessert was ice cream - I would say the peppermint is actually candy cane ice with sugar chunks in. Good. Other than egg roll incident, waitress was very helpful and personable. Bathroom smelled like a pool locker room. Ordered carryout. Food slightly better. Got door dash from this place, only got dumplings fried rice and sesame chicken and it cost more than $50, around 40 without door dash fees. There was a decent amount of food but I could've gotten the same amount for far far less somewhere else. The sesame chicken was mediocre and the chicken fried rice that I ordered turned out to be TOFU fried rice. The dumplings were decent but it's hard to mess up dumplings. Overall it was sub par food for an outrageous price. Don't eat or order from here. Not worth it. read more

What a way to spoil your Sunday Night. I ordered carry out for the first time from this place. I was told the order would take 30 minutes, when we arrived, the restaurant was in chaos. Long story short one hour goes by and no sign of our simple order. We decided to cut our losses and go home, needless to say this makes for a very upsetting way to end your weekend, so thank you Golden Phoenix for that. Service is SO great here - welcoming, friendly, efficient, accurate, and fast! Fantastic food selection, fairly priced, and the food is yummy! They also have a pretty good drink menu. I've been patronizing this restaurant for many years. While the food has never been outstanding, it's always been good. I've supported it because the staff have always been helpful and nice. Recently the ownership has changed, and I've continued to dine there. Today however there was an incident. One of our lunch entrees was tasteless ($6.75). Apart from the one initial taste, it was untouched. I asked to have it taken off the bill, and the woman owner refused, quite abruptly. This is the only time I've made this request. Went there for dinner tonight with my grandma and 2 sons. We got there at 5:30pm and there was only one other couple at a table. We ordered an almond chicken dinner, ordered an extra egg roll, an extra soup, and dinner rolls. My one son eats very little and the other doesn't like Chinese food so he was just going to have a roll. The woman owner who served us was so rude! She kept asking me what else we wanted to order, crab ragoons, etc, I politely told her that they will not eat it and that what we ordered will be good for us. In the past I always came home with leftovers which I did not want to happen this evening (or I end up stuffing myself which I was also trying to avoid). I guess she didn't like that we didn't order more because after I told her that we were good she was just rude. She came back to the table a few times to see if we were all set while I was still trying to eat and asking if we need a to go box. I told her that I am not sure yet as I am still eating. I am not sure what the hurry was since there was only us and another table. In the times that she came to the table to try to hurry us out, she never once refilled our waters or even asked if we wanted some more water. When we were done she pushed the bill at us and didnt offer the ice cream that is included (meanwhile she did ask the table next to us). My son asked for the ice cream and she got it for him and tossed it at him. Food was ok but because of the service I will not be returning! Please stay away from this place that is under new management! They understood perfect English when accepting my money but feigned ignorance and acted as if they didn't understand English when I very politely expressed my dissatisfaction with my meal. We took our family of 14 yesterday, day before thanksgiving. Sat down at 5:30 and no one waited on us for one hour. We had reservations for 2 weeks. Our drink order was at 6:35. We watched as customers who came in well after us, were served. Kids were totally exhausted from sitting so long!!!. Our food came out after 2 hours sitting. We never received our appetizers, it was delivered with food. 2 of our family members never received their food. This was the worst service, food was horrible. The soups improved, egg rolls are edible but are mall Chinese quality they came out burnt and greasy, cashew chicken was so bland no spice at all we ordered it medium, chicken chop suey was mostly celery. Gai kow seemed to be prepared with a lot of salt used for flavor, And the cashew chicken which was ordered medium spicy was very bland. The eggrolls are different as well, can't say exactly what is different besides the flavor. Something is very noticeably missing from the egg roll. What used to be superb is now very generic. The only positive thing to say about the new ownership is the very unfriendly woman who was there for many years is not!i'm very disappointed that my favorite Chinese restaurant is no longer my favorite. I have gone here since I was 4 years old along with everyone in my family and we have yet to have a problem with this place. The owner is really nice once you get to know them and the food is great when really it's something popular like almond boneless chicken or Mongolian beef or the general sous chicken and the egg rolls and the wonton soup are very good but be careful they do put shrimp in there egg rolls . The food has been amazing since I was little but I came on here to write about the customer service. I ordered tonight from a food delivery service and the driver forgot the sizzling rice part of my sweet and sour war ba. I couldn't get ahold of the driver so someone from Golden Phoenix delivered the sizzling rice to my house!! And threw in some egg rolls. I will not return. I had sweet and sour chicken which was tough and the waitress didn't ask how much spice my son wanted on his sezchuan beef and the chef put none on it at all. He found it tasteless. And serving black tea instead of green tea was not to our liking either. The only thing we actually liked was the peppermint ice cream which wasn't home made. read more

Horrible carry out. Ordered pot stickers and they are bone dry and stuck to the packaging.... yuck!!! Also ordered spicy vegetables... not meal... received a box of GREASY... mushy vegetables with disgusting fried rice and a cold hard egg roll... incredibly disappointing and to be honest... disgusting.... throwing it all away. We got a carryout order from this restaurant last night, our first time trying their food. I'm a fan of hot and sour soup, trying it nearly every time I pass a new Chinese restaurant. Theirs consisted of a watery broth with few other ingredients, unlike the typical version with a richly flavored broth, slightly thickened and filled with meat, tofu, bamboo shoots and other Chinese vegetables. The mu shoo pork would have been good if the meat wasn't so tough and fatty. The chicken lo Mein was the best dish we ordered, but not good enough to get us back. Kung pao chicken was bland, seemed more stewed than freshly prepared. The chicken was not well trimmed and had some nasty pieces that I spit out. Normally I wouldn't negatively comment after only one visit, but I won't return to this one. There are too many other good choices within a mile or two from Golden Phoenix. read more
