First time eating here and it was quite good! The menu is overwhelmingly large, many options! I got a plain burger with lettuce, tomato and mayo, burger was cooked really well and tasted fresh. The corn pudding was very good. And, the unsweetened tea was just right, sometimes it can taste very bland but it was perfect. The cake was very good, generous portion so didn't finish it. If you want to bypass the fast food locations the Golden Skillet has a huge menu that is made-to-order homemade cooking. They have so many food options. And the price is reasonable. I must confess that the fried gizzard is the best in the state of North Carolina. They have melt-in-your-mouth super tender gizzards that you will not find anywhere else. Most of the food that is offered here you will find at a sit-down restaurant versus a fast food location. I also was amazed at how golden brown and tasty the pork chops were made. The menu is very detailed with their prices. The workers are all nice, attentive and friendly. The dining area is very fresh and clean with great window lighting. This place may look a little old-fashioned but the quality of the service and the food options are delightful. Don't expect everything to be perfect but for the most part, the majority of the food here is pretty good. read more

Henderson has the absolute worst restaurants, I always struggle to find any place to eat when I'm here. I figured I would give this place a try since it looks like it's been around for a while, wish I hadn't. I ordered the flounder sandwich and paid extra for the mac and cheese as a side. The sandwich was just average, and the mac and cheese tasted like orange, toxic cheese flavored paste, it was completely unedible. Ridiculous customer service. I called the last Friday evening asking them what time they closed. It was 7:39p when I called. They informed me of 9, even though their website says 10. I say, "Okay so you stop serving food then"? She says yes. Okay that's fine, I head out there from Franklinton. I get there at 8:39p and a female is taking someone's order in front of me. A simple bbq sandwich special (one of the two items I was going to order)I'm at the speaker at 8:41p and without even speaking the female says, "We're closed, that was our last car". The menu offers a basic selection and the preparation is fairly workmanlike. Your average restaurant catering toward locals. The food is good and the staff is friendly but the wait times lately have been extremely long. I would suggest the fish sandwich and the porkchop dinner. The chicken is good too but sometimes has a burnt taste. They have daily specials as well. Desserts can be a hit or miss. It was a good place. It has gone downhill. It is not good when you order a drink with no ice and you get extra ice. It is not good when cashiers are not listening and they end up getting your order wrong. The cashier's and management is very rude. If their is a problem. Management tries to cover for it. The food is not cooked right it is half raw. If the employees stop gossiping about on-the-job relationships, things will be a little better. Too much playing and talking means your food is not clean. The cooks are playing and talking the whole time. The cooks(men) are grabbing, hugging and kissing other co-workers. There are the couples having disagreements on the job. Everyone hears them. It took them an hour to cook an order of gizzards. My oldest son stood there almost two hours waiting to speak to a manager and everyone ignored him and there was a manager there that day. Two weeks ago my aunt placed an order for chicken and ended up in the emergency room because she is allergic to fish and one of the employees stated that everything is cooked or fried in the same cooking grease/oil. We dined in (which means you order at the counter and pick up you food when it's ready), but they have take out and a drive-thru. The staff was very helpful! We had to wait a few minutes for our food to cook but we had no problem with that. We ordered the flounder snack and the shrimp snack. The shrimp were a bit larger than I expected. I preferred the hush puppies over the biscuit with the food that I got. However, I think the biscuit would be good with a more traditional home cooked meal like meatloaf or country style steak. The prices are unreal now. You never know what you're going to get when you order a big skillet these days. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's all a bunch of crisp with no chicken in it. This is a order at the counter where the cash register is located then wait for your meal. On this visit I mistakenly ordered the daily special of country fried steak diner with 2 sides and a drink for $6.79 also served with biscuit, hush puppies or roll. Since they did not have any biscuits available I went with hushpuppies. As for the sides, they did not have any corn. There were 14 different sides to chose from. The sweet tea is Lipton and the fountain drinks are Coke products. Also on the menu is BBQ pulled pork, salads & fried seafood. Now for the meal itself, the collards were awful and looked like mush.
