My first time trying this place and unfortunately I would not recommend it to anyone. I have never seen anyone go in or out of this restaurant, which should've been my first clue. The food that I had ordered, which was the orange chicken, was packed and overflowing my bowl, which I was excited about but it was overly sweet and tasted kind of dry and old. This place was so good under previous management. Now some REALLY rude dudes run the place---or work there. If the food were good, their attitude might be forgivable. Alas! Crispy scallion shrimp: no scallions, no peppers, just shrimp in a meh sauce. Sizzling rice soup: admittedly full of meats and veggies, but totally tasteless. Used to get a good amount of the rice (for sizzle). Now it's a tablespoon. No joke. Curious, I poured the rice for the soup for two into a spoon. Spring roll was half the size it used to be. I asked for extra sauce packets. They were going to charge 50 cents. Seriously?? I was the only one in the place at 7 on a Fri night. Used to be lots of folks waiting, in and out. Wow! The food is so good, I am from NYC and their food is better than china town in manhattan. They give you portions that are healthy, more than enough. It's been a few years since I ate from there and the new owners are doing an excellent job with delicious food and great service. So I've always loved this place, but we ordered last night and things tasted different. The dumplings which had been a favorite of the fam, tasted terrible. They definitely changed how they were made. Honestly they tasted like premade frozen ones instead of fresh. The chicken in the chicken and broccoli also had a more chewy taste. Not sure if they changed suppliers but I was so disappointed. Plus I wish they would open back up inside so you could eat there. May have to find something a little closer to the house vs driving across town. read more

Came down for Mothers' Day a few weeks back. I don't believe I'd actually been here since I left Athens. But anyway, ordered the orange tofu with a fried eggroll. The eggroll was crispy and hot, which was a plus. The orange tofu was ok. I like the way it was fried, but the sauce was a tad sweet for my taste - not usually a huge fan of too much sweet in my entrée. The owners and servers were all very polite and fast, so props for that, and the food was not very expensive. So, not exceptional, but if you want quick, decent Chinese food, this is the go to place for the East side of Athens. read more

I got catering from Golden Sun for a post-wedding dinner event with our wedding guests. I had family traveling from Taiwan and was really worried that they would be picky about any Chinese food they had in the US. Not only was the order packaged perfectly and delivered on time, my family and our friends all raved about how great the food was. It totally made my night and everyone was well fed and very happy. This has been my go to Chinese place since I moved to Athens. Food is always good, and the dinner combo is so much food for the money. I love this place, and that is why I am so sad to say that I found a roach in my egg roll tonight. I wanted to believe that it was anything else, because I don't want this place to be ruined for me.... but a roach is a roach. I did a search for Chinese buffet, and it's probably pretty much what I think which is bait and switch they advertise for a buffet on the internet but they don't provide one just to try to get people who don't research fully to come into the restaurant and are hungry and just say well what the heck I'll eat here anyway. My favorite Chinese place in Athens. Here's the pros: Kung Pao chicken is outstanding. I get the regular combo portion and I get three meals out of it. Try it extra spicy. Hot and sour soup- nobody does it better. The little crab angel with the combo is like cream cheese crack. Sweet tea is made southern style. Sweet and good. Fast and cheap. Can't beat that. Cons: Closed on Mondays. Lately my fortunes have been little cute sayings instead of legitimate fortunes. Also winning lottery numbers have been consistently inaccurate. Perhaps it's time for a new cookie distributor? Other than that, I can highly recommend Golden Sun. read more

My quest to find good chinese food in Athens, which seems non existent, brings me to Golden Sun. The menu is typical for lunch and dinner and average prices. The surprise was that the food was actually decent and didn't trigger the gag reflex like Peking or Chef Ming. Good portions, soup was okay, they give egg rolls vs, spring rolls with every meal, and rice was good. The won ton was under cooked and the soup noodles were stale, but overall it wasn't bad. No where near PF Changs good, but better than the mall food. So far, this place is the best chinese I've been able to find. The search continues..... read more

I've always loved this place and have been eating there for years. I was a little disappointed by my last visit, though. I ordered the sesame tofu, which is a favorite dish of mine. I asked the waitress if it came with veggies, or if I should order extra (I like a lot of vegetables with my meal) and she said it came with plenty and I wouldn't need any extra. However, when the dish was brought out, it only had maybe four mushrooms and a couple of carrots. The sauce on the tofu was so sickeningly sweet that I had a hard time eating it. I love the combo of sweet and savory, but this was just like someone had dumped a bottle of syrup on my food. The consistency of the tofu was great, and the few veggies I had were good, but that sauce was just way too sweet. The waitress was very friendly and nice, and even boxed up our food for us. Very good, FRESH food---yum. My fave dish (Mongolian BEEF!!!) is seasoned really well, and moist, and is simply delicious. I will order this probably for the rest of my life. So good! The hot and sour soup actually came with MEAT in it. And mushrooms. It was great. My parents' dishes (four treasures which is essentially a seafood dish and pepper steak) were a little on the salty side. Only negative. Lunch special is ridiculously inexpensive. We also got hot tea, and the total came out to be like $22 for 3 people. In a pretty nice restaurant (don't judge a book by its cover...or in this case, a restaurant's exterior). Attn; Georgia needs new taste on real Chinese food. To start the steamed dumpling where 10 times thicker than any traditional dumpling. The inside of the dumpling looked like slaw from Big Brother. Yuck. I got orange chicken which consisted off 75% orange peel, 25% "chicken" little pieces of breading is more like it. It came with a egg roll but Jesus it was discussing. My husband and I have been going to golden sun since they opened. They used to be excellent. They are Rude The manager is out of control Rude!!! When I addressed it with the owner she did not care. This is the best Chinese delivery I've had in a veeeeeery long time. It was like having dine-in at home! The short of it: great price, dinner combo comes with an abundance of food, delivery time was what I would expect on a Friday evening (40 mins from the time I ordered for a 2.1 mile delivery). The chicken lo mein, egg drop soup, and fried donuts were delicious--I would give 5 stars if the fried rice wasn't dry and the fried crab angle had more filling. Verdict: absolutely ordering from Golden Sun Chinese again. The long version: Food: Me, my two-year-old son, and one-year-old daughter shared the chicken lo mein dinner combo. comes with an egg roll, a fried crab angle, soup (we had egg drop) with the fried pieces of wonton to top it, fried rice, and enough lo mein for at least two adults (in my opinion). We also ordered the fried donuts for dessert. First of all, the person taking my call-in delivery order was very patient, pleasant, and easy to understand. I was really surprised that the soup was still included with the delivery; some places don't do that, and here they even give you a bag of the crunchy wonton pieces, which I love. The egg drop soup is broth, a couple little strips of meat (chicken I think), egg, and green onion. Delicious! The egg roll has bits of meat (beef I think) and cabbage with black pepper. It's about 3/4 the size of a usual egg roll, and with a combo price of $9.65, I think that's fair. Tasty! It's not a just a ton of wrapper with a little filling, unlike Choo Choo's spring rolls. I wish I could say the same for the fried crab angle. It was mostly fried wonton with just a taste of filling. Disappointing. The fried rice is just that, fried rice. This doesn't bother me, but I was surprised not to see the usual peas, carrots, and egg bits. It was too dry for my taste. I don't know if this is how they prepare it or if it was sitting out for a while. Unappetizing. The chicken lo mein is lots and lots and lots of noodles with a few mushroom pieces, green onion pieces, slices of white onions, a few pieces of julienned carrots, and bits and bites of chicken with the usual brown sauce. Scrumptious! I wish it had a little more chicken and vegetables, but again, for everything that comes for $9.65, it was perfect. Finally, you get 12 two-bite fried donuts for $2.95. They were just the right texture, not hard or extra chewy, thus obviously fresh and cooked perfectly. Delicious! Delivery time: Friday evening at 5:15 pm, they told me it would be delivered in 45 mins. I think the delivery fee was less than $2.50 (it's based on mileage, they had to bring it about 2.1 miles), and they got it here in 40 mins. Wonderful! Verdict: Absolutely ordering here again. Willing to try the fried rice again, and never ordering their fried crab angles. Special notes: Delivery for one order comes with one packet each of duck sauce, soy sauce, and mustard. Ask for more when you order if you need it. Also comes with a fortune cookie and a menu, and no utensils or napkins included. There is a note under the "Lighter Fare" menu section that says "These special entrees are low in sodium, less oil & no MSG." So I'm guessing everything else on the menu has MSG. Not sure. How it compares: Based on one experience with each restaurant, I like it much better than Choo Choo. (which is the only other Asian place that I've ordered from in the two weeks I've been living in Athens, and while I ordered a Korean dish from Choo Choo and a side of spring rolls, I'll never order either again--poor quality spring rolls (NOTHING like the picture on their web site) and the bibimbob had maybe an ounce of beef with it, which was more like a sprinkle of topping than what I expected from the menu description). read more
