One year later... My new go to Chinese place is Golden Dragon. They were closed yesterday. My girlfriend picked up China 1. She got me Szechuan beef which deserved an updated review. GOLDEN DRAGON Pros: They have orange beef The quality has been better than China 1. Cons: It's more expensive. I was ok with that because they were actually giving you more meat than vegetables. I've had a handful of experiences where it was not good because there was someone new in the kitchen. CHINA 1 Pros: Cheaper (but for a negative reason) Open on Tuesday Cons: No orange beef My Szechuan beef was almost all vegetables and no beef. My girlfriend got chicken. Substantially more protein, but then we both noticed a problem with both of our dishes, which was... No flavor and a weird texture. After tasting both dishes, I realized why. The sauces were watered down and then thickened with cornstarch to a point where it was flavorless and gummy. It's saddens me to write this review because I used to love China one. It was my go to Chinese restaurant. One year later, the prices are still the same, but spending $14 on a dish that has almost no meat in it and a sauce that is primarily water and cornstarch, I will not be from there again. Two years ago, I could have honestly said that Golden Dragon was a superior choice even at the price point of $20 for a dish but not anymore. Golden dragon is using cheaper cuts of meat and they are putting less meat in that $20 dish. Combine that with inconsistency (always wondering if your $38.50 order / $42.60 delivery / for two people will be edible), it's not really worth it either. If you must order takeout or delivery for Chinese food, then I would suggest Golden Dragon But the better option is to just go to Trader Joe's and get the same stuff for a fraction of the price. read more

This is one of the best Chinese takeout places I've ordered from in many years. The portions of each dish are plentiful, the white rice portion is larger than expected and the ingredients are fresh. They seem to have a good amount of business. We had to wait a while for our order but for good reason. They were busy! My only gripe is that they seem to have a bit more MSG than I am used to. But not so much, it was unbearable. If I come back to Athens, I will gladly order takeout from here again! read more

Used to be one of our favorite take-out places in Athens, but the last 3 times we have ordered pickup, the wait time has been crazy long. They will quote us 20 minutes, and it ends up being an hour. Food is not that good. There are much better Chinese restaurants. Place is out dated, food is very American. I was very unhappy with my order. I ordered the buffalo wings with fried rice and they were awful. Not buffalo sauce and fried rice was soggy. I also got the Mongolian chicken with vegetable lo mein. My go-to spot for Chinese food in Athens! It's incredibly close to my apartment, so it's a no brainer I go here. Close proximity AND delicious food? Can't be beat. Food: I usually order the combination Mongolian beef with white rice. I used to order it with roast pork fried rice but they changed it recently and now it's only chicken fried rice. The chicken that comes with the fried rice isn't that good so I'd avoid it if I were you. The white rice mixed with the Mongolian beef sauce though? Divine! Instead of an egg roll that comes with the combination, I swap it out for a canned drink. By the time I'm done with my food, I am so full. It doesn't look like a lot, but trust me, it's enough. You won't get any leftovers but you won't be feeling hungry after a meal either. Today I also ordered their Singapore pancit. It's an unsung hero for sure. It has rice noodles with green onions, white onions, roast pork, chicken, shrimp, and egg. If you're ever drunk or hungover, this will give you life. I highly recommend their food! Price: I bought the combination meal and Singapore pancit today for $17.17 total. I got a drink included in my combination meal, so it's a bang for your buck. If I had just gotten one entree, it'd only be around $8 each. Service/Atmosphere: I usually am helped by a young girl with glasses or an older woman who always has a hat on. Both aren't talkative but they always make sure my order is right whenever I have special requests. They're quite patient with me. While they may not smile all the time, they're good workers! It's always pretty quiet when I go inside too since most people order to-go (like myself) so it's not hard to hold conversations in there when I do decide to come with my boyfriend or friends. Overall: Great place with great food. While it's not my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant ever, it is my favorite in Athens. It satisfies my cravings and it's often open late hours! The reason I docked a star is that the fried rice isn't that great with the chicken and I have gotten sick there once. Sometimes they can skimp out on the protein portion too. I normally don't hate chinese food but this looked good at first, but man this tasted like an old crappy fridge that has NEVER been cleaned. The food tasted old and reheated. The food was not "not" edible but boy it was a TASK. I threw most of it away, I feel like I wasted my money and fear of a looming sickness. The service was great. The older lady took my order over the phone and misheard 'a Philly egg roll' as 'three egg rolls' despite me repeating it twice. Got that corrected and when I arrived at the restaurant to pick up my order, they had indeed given me the wrong egg roll. I made sure to point out the mistake, and they charged me the price difference. However, I had to wait again for my correct order, which meant that the food I had already received got cold due to their mistake. Won't be coming back. read more

Good for quick, cheap, chinese food. It's not the best but again, its take out chinese food that you can get for under $5. I've gotten their curry chicken and thought it lacked flavor. Unbeatable Chinese take-out at reasonable prices. The fried rice and lo mein are meaty and delicious. They can almost stand alone as a meal without an entree. I always order from the counter, takes about 10 minutes. The dining area is small, so not much capacity, but the quality of the food is worth the drive from anywhere in the Athens area. read more

After reading these reviews I was very skeptical about trying this place. However China 1 pleasantly surprised me! The atmosphere is definitely lacking, but if you're just wanting great Chinese food to go I would highly recommend trying this place! I got a pint of chicken lo mein and an egg roll - perfect portion size and very satisfying! My friends got the sesame chicken and fried rice and it looked picture perfect! My first "visit" to China 1. I can't wait for this COVID craziness passes. The staff was friendly and efficient. The food was good; however, the General Tso Chicken was neither Hot nor Spicy and I enjoy Hot & Spicy. The fried rice was good as were the Spring Rolls. On a quest to find good Chinese food in Athens I tried this place. I like to order a variety of things before reviewing so I ordered spring rolls, teriyaki chicken on a stick, coconut chicken, and Singapore pancit. Well the Teriyaki chicken on a stick was a 2/5, the spring rolls were a 0/5, the coconut chicken was 1/5, and the Singapore pancit was a 2/5. The spring rolls got zero because there was nothing in them and I do mean nothing. The coconut chicken taste like mayo... I cook so I know mayo is part of the recipe but it tasted like all mayo. The Singapore pancit was bland. Overall I was dissatisfied and will not be going back. read more

I ordered coconut chicken and my fiance ordered beef with broccoli. His meal was mediocre and what you'd generally expect from a generic Chinese restaurant. I tried this place because of its decent reviews on Yelp in comparison to other Chinese places around Athens, however it ended up being subpar food for higher prices than it was worth. I ordered a shrimp lo mein combination with shrimp fried rice. The lo mein tasted burnt and all of the shrimp and vegetables cooked with it had the same smoky, burnt, undesirable taste. The meal ended up being $10, which I could've gone to a better, more upscale Chinese place and paid that amount for better food. The shrimp fried rice wasn't terrible. The only reason I'm giving it more than 1 star is because it could've just been a bad round of lo mein that they gave me. Not sure, but I'd recommend trying somewhere else. read more
