Adorable and quirky cafe that is 100% worth all the hype, the long waits, and the hard-to-snag reservations. I visited Golden West Cafe on a Sunday afternoon with a moderately large group (7 people). We were originally hoping for a brunch reservation but could only snag a 3 PM slot -- a testament to how incredibly popular they are -- although we ended up being ready at 2 PM and called ahead to ask if they could seat us earlier. They, very graciously, were able to make space for us to come a tad earlier. The food was absolutely incredible -- it was some combination of American comfort and Mexican / Latin American, with classic Mexican items like huevos ranchos, fish tacos, and enchiladas right next to traditional American brunch selections like chicken and waffles, hot cakes, and so forth. Their menu is also remarkably vegetarian / vegan-friendly, and it features their own house-made vegan chicken! We decided to split a few items, including the zucchini brie hot cakes, fish tacos, and vegan hot honey chicken and waffles. All three were outstanding, but my favorite had to be the zucchini brie hot cakes. The cakes were remarkably soft and fluffy, and I loved the bit of sweetness from the zucchini (and maple syrup, of course), and the extra hit of rich creaminess and savoriness from the brie. It was the perfect sweet and savory combo, and it was easily one of the biggest surprises of the meal. The rest of the items were also delicious, although not quite as wowing.The fish tacos were well-fried and flavorful, and I was quite impressed by how crispy and thin their accompanying fries were. I really enjoyed the flavor of the hot honey vegan chicken and waffles, but I was, admittedly, a little bit thrown off by the texture of both. It's very possible that the waffle had just gotten a bit soggy because I ate this dish last and it wasn't quite at its peak freshness. Drinks: Baltimore Vice -- strawberry-forward with a Don Q rum float, coconut foam, and freeze-dried strawberries. Light, refreshing, and very easy to drink. Piñata Riot -- a tequila twist on a jungle bird. Slightly bitter, tropical, and well-balanced. Both cocktails were solid and worth ordering again. Food: Green Chili Burger -- while it didn't quite hit true Albuquerque green chile standards, it was still flavorful and satisfying. A strong menu option. Zucchini Brie Pancake -- the standout dish. Unexpectedly balanced between sweet and savory, rich without being too heavy, and something I'd absolutely reorder. Overall: Great first impression. It was delicious, but I would have preferred for the dip to be hot in temperature. The wonton chips were just okay. I would have preferred a thinner chip. The sweet chili sauce was delicious. I came here a few weeks ago for the first time in like 15-20 years, and was happy to see the decor upgrades since that time. It's a nice open space with a western vibe (the golden west). Our server was nice but didn't want to interrupt us when he brought us water so we didn't know who we should talk to and ended up waiting a bit. Was a little hard to track someone down during the meal, but we eventually got what we needed. Foodwise, was happy to have lots of vegan options. Tried a few things to share. - Bowl of pumpkin soup - enough to be an entree but not exciting enough to eat as an entree. Flavor was fine. Wasn't a fan of the pumpkin seeds on top. Didn't feel like the texture made sense with the creamy soup. Would have been nice with some chunky sourdough toast or something, but wasn't an option. - Vegan French Toast - pretty good! - Vegan biscuits and gravy platter (with chick'n patty and just egg) - pretty good, a little heavy to eat a lot of. Just egg was better than expected - Black sesame latte with oat milk - not bad, a little sweet. The black sesame is a light nuttiness, not a super obvious flavor. It came with a little sesame candy/cookie thing on the side. I think the vegan food landscape is kind of limited, and it's hard to find good options. Golden West is a decent choice, which is honestly the main reason I'm giving it 4 stars (otherwise I'd probably give it 3-3.5). The menu is certainly interesting and has a lot of tasty looking food combinations but in practice I'm not sure how it would shake out. I think some of the options could be improved. Art and plant-filled, the inside is very unique and interesting. They have a variety of breakfast-dinner meals with an american/mexican focus. They also have desserts including vegan options. The atmosphere felt very trendy and the workers were ALL extremely friendly from the minute we walked in until the minute we left (all individually greeting us and telling us they were glad we came and to have a great day). I loved my vegan burrito (Christmas style--half red and half green sauce on top) it was very very filling and I ended up taking half of it home. The Boston crème donut filling was phenomenal! The chocolate on top was very liquidy so although it tasted good it left a huge mess. The donut part just tasted like bread. I do think the filling made it worth it to still get though. Bathrooms were clean and we didn't have to wait to be seated. A very casual dining spot for breakfast or lunch. My friend and I dined here over the weekend around noon. It was pretty busy when we arrived. I ordered a latte while my friend got coffee. For food, I chose the Fish Tacos and my friend got the Wild Mushroom Omelette. My fish tacos were so flavorless. Man I used to love this place. I just went and got a $12 app, fries, coke and an apple juice. $27 before tip. in mind you I never saw my waitress. The one time I did lay his eyes on her was when she mistakenly came to my table after the host had already covered for her and was so cracked out and I really do mean this. And then when I asked, is this tip going to my server or is this tip going to you i.e. the person who's ringing me out, and I was told that it was pulled so I of course said fine and accepted the automatic 20% that was in front of my face when I tapped my card. So I want you to understand I paid like $35 for a glass of Coke a side of fries and the minuscule portion of cauliflower included in the photo below. I just paid $35 to eat like 12 pieces of fried cauliflower. And get weed on by somebody under the influence of drugs like heavily. I'm just so appalled. I really used to love it here. Oh and I should mention that I did tell the manager that I had not seen the server for 25 minutes and that I've seen everybody else 101 times and I didn't know what was going on, but somebody needed to check on her because I've never seen anybody that coked up at a table before and guess what I never saw that damn manager again. I recently returned to Golden West for the first time in a long time. We were planning on just getting a quick pastry or sweet treat but ended up enjoying some carnitas nachos. We sat in the back bar area in the couch section which is beautifully decorated with thriving plants. It's such a vibe! It was around 4pm so we weren't super hungry but wanted a little nosh. The carnitas nachos caught my eye. The nachos came out fairly quickly and were made with yummy, melty cheese and delicious shredded carnitas. The carnitas has so much flavor as if they had been marinated in a careful combination of spices for hours (I sensed some nutmeg or cinnamon in there maybe?). I was impressed since I know Golden West is known as a vegan friendly spot but they sure know how to prepare some delicious carnitas too. Although this was a quick stop in, it was a good reminder that Golden West is tried and true and just as good as I remember. read more

I wish Yelp had half stars. This rates as a 3.5. We had an attentive server and generally everyone had a smile on their faces for my little one. I took my 4 year old for a Mommy and Me brunch date. I tried the vegan french toast with bananas and walnuts. It was my first time trying vegan french toast so I don't have much to compare it to. Everything tasted fresh and I would def go back to try some more breakfast items. My daughter enjoyed her burger (no cheese) and the fries were yummy with those big sea salt flakes. She wasn't a fan of the bun on her burger, which was a bit burnt on the inside so she just ate the meat and fries. This is a family friendly, casual spot. There's a nice park/skate park across the street to take your small kids on a nice day. Food wasn't particularly seasoned strongly (my eggs didn't taste like they had any seasoning), but everything did taste fresh. Will def give it another try. First, let me say we're long-time customers of Golden West. We like the food, and we like the recent restaurant renovation. However, the last few times we've been there, service has been slow and the bar service has been either absent (no bartender--they could only serve beer and wine) or poor. There seems to be a management problem. Most recently, we arrived when they were out of menus and had to wait about 10 minutes to get one. These are printed cards, not anything elaborate that couldn't easily be reprinted--and the restaurant wasn't close to full. One of our party ordered a martini with a specific gin and what came wasn't a martini. It wasn't cold, and it seemed to be mostly vermouth, but kind of watery vermouth at that. When our waiter brought the check, I gestured to the virtually untouched drink on the table and said that whatever we'd been served wasn't a martini. He said, "I'm sorry" and gave us the machine to pay. He didn't consult with his manager or offer to comp the drink. I hope someone gets things under control because I'd like to see Golden West thrive. I'm not going to be able to convince my family that it's a worthwhile choice if things continue as they are. read more

Hello, This will be a updated review. I reviewed this restaurant about 10 yrs ago and raved about the corn cakes. This restaurant has gone through many changes and the food is no longer the same. I visited on 7/2525 and ordered the same corn cakes and they are no longer the same as the ones I use to love. They had a very strong baking powder taste and were very thick. I also ordered a side of bacon and they cooked it so long it was like the worst bacon I have ever had at a restaurant. I will no longer be recommending this place. DISCLAIMER: we used to really love this place, last time I'd dined there was just a bit before the new renovations/bar changes. Review for 2/8/2026 11:20-12:00 sitting near the back, server was wearing white sweater. Today was AWFUL. I have NO idea what happened to the standard of service in there..... When our server FINALLY deemed it necessary to simply show up at our table, she set the water pitcher down and stood there.... We were like "hello?" and I couldn't tell if I suddenly lost my hearing or if she was simply whispering to us. No name, no "hi how are you", just silence and us having to repeat our order multiple times. The ONLY sence of urgency we recieved from her is when we asked for the check to get out of that mess. Now onto the quality of the product: We ordered two iced matchas that might as well have been a shot glass full of liquid. I cannot even fathom how we paid $6 each for something that was less than the quantity of one of those MINI coke cans. The food was excellent, the food RUNNER was the ONLY employee there who even spoke an audible word to us, and that was it. The rest was terrible, so bad that I wish we would've left on multiple occasions... but we were giving the benefit of the doubt to that ridiculously careless server and the slowness in which our tablespoon-size matchas were provided (as the food came out). It didnt even seem THAT busy in there. Even if it was, that was completely unacceptable service: she hardly SPOKE TO US??? Went here after my graduation and they'd JUST opened. Ordered the stuffed french toast, an egg and bacon. It took them 49 minutes to bring our food and it was cold. Sent it back . My boyfriend ordered the burrito, 2/5, nothing too special and it was incredibly overpriced. The cafe itself is cute but there are other places that will be more attentive with better food. As a garlic lover the garlic fries were amazing, but buyer beware, you will need a mint after eating them. The service was lovely and was matched with a very cute interior. My family and I have spent countless birthdays, date nights, dessert runs and brunch outings at Golden West. It doesn't matter when we've gone or what we've ordered, Golden West has delivered each time. To start, Golden West nails the vegan milkshake. My daughter is a fussy eater who is vegetarian but not vegan. She abhors most vegan versions of things especially ice cream. She asks to get a milkshake from Golden West each time we are in Hampden. She prefers their vanilla version. I like what they do with cookies and cream. They incorporate so many Oreos that it turns the vanilla ice cream chocolate looking. Along with milkshakes, we almost always grab coffee when passing by. They have many alternative milk options and different flavors. I usually just do an oat milk latte. For me, the allure of Golden West is their vegan chicken based sandwiches that use Little Fig Chicken, a mock chicken made locally. They offer many different menu items with this chicken. I've had a chicken and biscuit with gravy, a buffalo chicken sandwich a supremo chicken sandwich (with nozzarella sticks) and a chicken parm. You can't go wrong with the chicken and their is a lot of variety to fit whatever your vegan preference is. Golden West also crushes the buffalo cauliflower, vegan waffles and french toast, vegan tacos and fries. The dessert at Golden West is incredible as well. They bring in a number of different desserts from Vegan Treats in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I've been to the Vegan Treats storefront and it is the best vegan dessert I've had. Once I learned Golden West has Vegan Treats items, I started making dessert a priority. Peanut Butter Bombs and cupcakes are my normal go to. Decided to spend the day in Baltimore with a friend and we had wandered over to Hampden because it's adorable and there are Christmas lights so naturally needed to find a dinner spot. Walked around the main street in search of sustenance around 5:30 PM and saw a bunch of people in Golden West Cafe along with the promise of live music starting at 6 PM. We ordered a bunch of dishes: -Brussels Sprouts: delicious!!! Super generous serving of well-cooked sprouts with great flavor and not too much oil (of course, I could always use less oil but these were pretty solid for restaurant sprouts) -Zucchini Brie Pancake: surprisingly good! Reminded me of a scallion pancake but also had a strong brie flavor. Both savory and sweet, with an interesting syrup pairing that tasted a bit like vanilla caramel. We were in this! -Chicken, Brie, Bacon: fairly standard chicken sandwich. The garlic fries were good though -Sopapilla Enchiladas: turns out I don't actually like Sopapilla! The sopapilla was a bit too hard to eat. The Unchicken was fine, but I could've used a bit more flavor The live music was AWESOME and the service was equally fantastic! Golden West sometimes waxes and wanes with service and atmosphere, but it's a Baltimore staple for a reason, and solid. In this current iteration, the food and service is on point! My bartender was Lucas who was hip and knowledgeable, who gave timely, warm service. The Nacho Salad did not disappoint, nor did the Bloody Mary. The rest of the cocktail menu was also v intriguing! We recently had dinner at Golden West. I haven't been there in years, at least a decade if not longer. The space is open and bright- I love the plants in the front dining area. We went on a weeknight so it wasn't too busy. I had a pancake, buffalo cauliflower and strawberry lemonade. The pancake was perfect. It was huge and fluffy and might be my new favorite pancake in Baltimore. I'll definitely order the pancake again. The strawberry lemonade was good but was too sweet for me. Brought my man here for dinner since he's never been! We arrived on a Monday evening around 7:30pm. They weren't busy since it was close to closing time. Our server, Blake, was great in making recommendations and checking on us frequently. I had the birria burrito which had a nice flavor and full with meat. Golden West Cafe is truly one of our all-time favorites. The food is amazing and there are options for absolutely everyone - vegan, gluten free, and, if you're neither, delicious omnivorous/gluten-included versions of almost every menu item. It makes it so easy to bring a group knowing everyone will find something they love. We come here often but one of our most special visit was for our wedding rehearsal lunch. We used their private party option, which was perfect - the planning and coordination were seamless, and everything was set up exactly the way we wanted. They also recently remodeled the restaurant, and it is it so cute and cozy. I caught myself subtly taking photos of some of the decor ideas to try to recreate at home. When we arrived, the hostess started walking us to an area and said to herself "nevermind" and then started walking in the opposite area where we were supposed to telepathically know to follow her. We did and learned that she was not the hostess, but, instead, our server. I instantly wished that we had been seated in another area to have another server. She took a while to take our orders. And, when she did, she didn't seem to be knowlegable of the menu. For instance, she was not sure of gluten free options (and it was not clear on the menu what was gluten free). My daughter specifically selected this cafe after a google search and reading reviews about gluten free options. She does not eat gluten for health reasons. The menu offerings are pretty interestng, and not in a good way. There are tacos, but only fish tacos. There are burritos, but ones with ingredients you don't usually find in burritoes. The attempt at creativity was evident, but it did not seem to result in delicious output. We ordered a grilled chicken salad with apples, goat cheese and walnuts, green chile hamburger, grilled chicken burger with bacon (can't remember the name) and hopi cakes that are cornmeal pancakes. The grilled chicken salad (which we shared as an appetizer before the meal) was the best thing out of everything and it wound up costing over $20 because everything was an add-on and they didn't have a variety of salads to choose from. When the server brought it out, although we told her that we were sharing it, she brought one little itty bitty 5 tsp-sized round of dressing instead of one for each of us. She never came back to check on us, so my daughter had to go to the hostess stand to ask for some more salad dressing. The rest of the food, including the fries touted as "garlic fries," was pretty mediocre. Even the drinks we ordered-- hibiscus rose lemonade, ginger tumeric lemonade and strawberry lemonade-- were syrupy sweet concoctions that did not taste anything like they were advertised to taste like. This was one of my favorite restaurants, but sadly I was treated like less than a human on my visit on Tuesday. I got there around lunch time and although there were only about four other diners there with me it took over 15 minutes for someone to acknowledge my table. Several servers walked by making eye contact with me, but never took my order. When I finally just said I should get up and leave the patrons next to me gave me a Nazi salute. I am a black woman. I was so embarrassed. I am also pregnant and really was craving their food. I'm so sad that this happened to me. read more

This place is one of my go-tos for brunch. With a huge variety of options including tons of veggie/vegan dishes, they have nearly everything one might want from a diner. They also usually have specials, sometimes highlighting seasonal produce. The ambience is really fun, with quirky decor, lots of plants, warm colors and a huge garage window that floods the place with natural light during the day. At night, it feels like a buzzy casual and unique eatery. These photos are from brunch recently; everyone really liked all their dishes. The food took a while to come out (~30-40 minutes) but drinks came out quickly and service was great. I'm docking one star because over nearly 9 years of coming here, sometimes the food is hit or miss. There's been times where I've gotten food that wasn't very tasty, cooked improperly, or in the worst case scenario, the lettuce was unwashed. But I'm glad I gave it another chance, because I love their menu and all the vegan options are really great. Overall, I would come back for brunch and for their happy hours, where you can get really great deals on drinks and apps. I don't necessarily expect the highest quality food all the time, but it's great when that happens and still worth it to go for the variety of options with a group of friends. read more
