A great restaurant to satisfy vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores alike. My friends and I went for a girls night here on a Wednesday evening. We got there around 6:30pm and no other customers arrived until about 7. The dining room is pretty big (maybe 20 tables?), there is also a full large bar in a separate room, a bakery you can walk through the restaurant to, and outdoor seating. Note that the dining room is upstairs, so I don't think it is handicap accessible unless there was a ramp to the upstairs entrance, but I don't think so. The menu is large and seems to be mostly Indian and Asian inspired dishes. There are lots of tofu dishes, but you can get chicken and a few other meat proteins with a lot of the dishes instead. We split the batata vada - which are fried potato fritters that come with 2 sauces. It had a nice crisp and was very savory, definitely a great starter. The mint sauce was pretty unique to me! Between the 3 of us we got the Cauliflower Manchurian, Bombay Tofu, and General Tso's Tofu. All of the tofu is very crispy and delicious! The cauliflower was cooked similarly crispy. They all come in a nice sauce which still allowed each to keep its crisp. You get to choose your own sides which ranges from rice to Chana masala to potatoes, there are a ton of options! My favorite was the Bombay Tofu! The sauce is similar to tikka masala, I loved all the spices. On the side, I tried the plantain and black bean yogurt, it was delicious but I do love plantains!! I'd recommend this for something different. Since we were the only ones in the restaurant when we ordered, it was very very fast for the food to come out. I am not sure if it gets more bustling on the weekends but when we left around 8pm there were maybe 5 tables full. Don't forget to check out the bakery next door for more vegan and gluten free option treats!! Overall we had a great time, and I have really nothing to complain about, the menu is big so I would definitely come back to try other things. I popped over to have a bite to eat after plant shopping and they have a beautiful outside setup. They also have two tables inside for seating but on a beautiful day why not take advantage. You enter from the side entrance and place your order. They have the menu to view right at the door before going up to the counter, and they have hand sanitizer too. They have a really good selection of food and drink options including cupcakes and other desserts. I ordered the chicken tacos, the papas and the carrot cake and coconut cupcake. It took about 10 minutes for the food to come out which was enough time for me to sit outside in the sun. The food came with plastic utensils and napkins so I ate the tacos outside. They were so yummy and had a delicious curry flavor and were stuffed to the brim with filling. The papas were also delicious. I had those and the cupcakes back at home and they provided two sauces with them. They were very similar to sambusas and just as delicious. The cupcakes each had different types of frosting and the carrot cake was moist and flavorful. The coconut cake was a bit dry but the frosting was a cream cheese frosting and really delicious. I'm definitely looking forward to going back and trying other items. If you're in the Remington neighborhood I highly recommend you grab lunch or dinner here. read more

I tried this place for the first time a few days ago, and I'm so glad that I did! Initially, I went for the cupcakes, but after seeing the menu, I decided to order food too. Again, I'm so glad I did! I ordered 3 sides: basmati rice, chana masala, and black beans with plantains. It was all so delicious! Also, I bought the chocolate cheesecake cupcake, which was good. My favorite so far is the coconut buttercream cupcake! Since my first visit, I went back a second time for deserts. This place will definitely be in my rotation. Finally - a long overdue thank you to Sweet 27. This is more of an ode than a review. Last summer, Sweet 27 was the venue for our daughter and son-in-law's wedding reception. I truly can not say enough good things. Working with Suraj during the planning process was a breeze. He is a sweet and patient man with a ready smile and a desire to please - a caterer in the real sense of the word. He only wanted us to be happy with our event. Though we love Sweet 27's standard fare, the restaurant basically offered to prepare whatever we wanted. Suraj guided us through food and bar options and helped us choose a menu that was just right. Everything was delicious, plentiful, plated prettily, served hot, and pleased even those who thought they didn't like Indian food. Service (appetizers were passed and dinner was served family style), provided by Cyrus, Shud, and Vinita (pls excuse any misspellings) was professional and friendly, as alway. The restaurant was decorated, a speaker was hung, and after dinner, a little area was cleared for dancing. All in all, it was a magical evening. If you are even thinking about hosting an event at Sweet 27, please do not hesitate. If you are not thinking about it, maybe you should be! THANK YOU, SWEET 27. When I first looked up Sweet 27 online I was worried because there menu seemed limited. It was a great surprise to find out they have a ton of food items that are also vegetarians and vegan friendly. They don't post a lot of thier menu online so you really just have to walk in. The waiter was nice and the food was amazing. I ordered a trio side platter which only cost me $9 (my wine was $8) haha. Their menu is as diverse as their gluten-free concept, with a variety of Asian cuisines represented, as well as tacos, pizza, some distinctly Caribbean dishes, and standard American breakfast items. We are big fans of Sweet Sin's and are very supportive of the owners' latest venture. We want to love love love it. PROS: Nice large dining area. Smart casual vibe. Engaged and attentive service. Some good dishes: the grilled veggie plate, the grilled salmon fish of the day, the cran-orange lemonade (no free refills-$4 a pop), and the sweet potato chips that came with the salmon tartare. CONS: I likely ordered the wrong thing. Still, the kitchen needs to take some responsibility - the peppercorn beef was uninspired beyond the delicious mushrooms (too far from the chef's Indian and Mexican strengths as well as a not using a superb piece of beef to start with and uninspired mashed potatoes), the chicken satay (unlike next door, here the chicken was a bit dry), and the salmon tartare (not bad tasting but can-shaped presentation hurt as did the lack of wow in the taste - needs more citrus?). Comparisons with Sweet Sin are inevitable. Unfortunately the menu here isn't quite as solid even though a lot of the chef's talent does shine through on some things. Nice to see all the effort put in to the dining room's appearance. However, at the end of the day when the (significantly sized) check arrives, you may be left with a pang of regret that you hadn't gone next door to eat instead. As far as value and overall taste, the original hole in the wall Sweet Sin beats its younger and more polished sibling. Hands down. read more

We were going to a show at The Otto Bar and wanted to enjoy a dinner and drinks beforehand. This restaurant has a full bar and delicious food. There is definitely something for everyone here. We made an OpenTable reservation but for our night it wasn't required, as it was not that crowded when we arrived (around 7pm on a Friday night). I liked the decor and design of this place as soon as I walked in. Our server was nice enough and we ordered some drinks. I had some kind of ginger cocktail and it was excellent. However, it was over a lot of ice so after 4 sips it was gone. Onto dinner- I had a Manchurian cauliflower dish. It was good, but it was over-sauced. The sauce was great, but there was just too much of it. Also, it would have been nice to have more cauliflower and less bell pepper. The fried cauliflower was delicious, but the dish was mostly bell pepper drowning in sauce. The husband had a chicken vindaloo and loved it. He didn't have any complaints. Overall, we were very happy we found this local restaurant with delicious food and drink before heading to the Otto Bar. Solid 3 stars. read more

Delicious! This is a homey little Baltimore classic tavern style bar and restaurant with a twist - a BIG flavor twist! The restaurant serves up great bar food (fries, burgers, tacos, etc.) but all with a fusion flavor twist. These twists heavily emphasize Indian flavors, but there is a little bit of something for all. For instance, the fries are chickpea flour battered and served with chutney style sauces - AMAZING. The lamb vindaloo has some great spice and layering of flavors. The duck tacos are phenomenally succulent and well balanced. Plus, the Chana masala is some of the best I've had. Who would've thought this random bar that serves Indian food in Baltimore would still be on my mind weeks later? No one, but it is! I went here with a friend of mine who raves about this place and being a fan of Indian food, I decided to join him. I ordered the Goat Curry because I love spicy food, be careful because this is a different level of spice. From the tender, fatty goat to the basmati rice, I truly enjoyed this meal! This was a new spot for me which I came to as I was attending an event at the nearby Ottobar. Not too pricey. Most of the entrees and sides are both gluten free and vegetarian. I ordered the Latin vegetable platter which is like a sampler of various dishes. The quinoa was too spicy hot for me to really enjoy and the tamale, while generously portioned, was tasteless and bland. I will say I am pretty impressed with this place! Being that my husband is quite allergic to gluten we have to be very conscientious of going to trustworthy establishments when they say they have gluten free options. We have held a birthday dinner for my husband there one weekend and they did great! They have a good deal of options, mostly all with a Indian theme - including some vegan dishes for a few of our friends. They have a vibe of a corner restaurant but it's pretty clean. There is one downside of street parking but we've gotten lucky on most visits. One really great feature is the separate/attached bakery storefront! Their cupcakes and cookies are delectable - just a bit pricey. One day I may actually splurge on a gluten free cake!! I was very excited to visit Sweet 27 on a trip to Baltimore this weekend after learning it was 100% gluten-free. Prior to my trip I mentioned it to several friends from Baltimore and they all raved about it and said I would love it. I was surprised they had even been there since a lot of times 100% gluten-free restaurants aren't well known or popular to gluten-eaters. That it was seemingly popular and recommended were great signs. I went with three friends from Baltimore, including two who had been before and really liked it. At a place with so many gluten-free options I was expecting to have difficulty deciding what to get, but this was especially hard. I first went for an order of their Asian crab cake. Celiac since I was three, I don't think I ever have had crab cakes before. I'm also not a huge seafood eater, but I really enjoyed the crab cake flavor and texture. The Asian flavors were a bit "guilty" because I'm so used to them being full of gluten from the soy sauce. That was an added treat. For my meal I went with the fish sandwich of the day, which was flounder and fried. Again not a big seafood eater, but this was a light fish. I was impressed with the batter, which I'm pretty sure is spiced garbanzo bean batter (at least that's what's on the regular fish and chips). The bun was also awesome. Good texture and great flavor. It held together really well. At one point it all got a bit messy, but this was because the fish slipped out and not because the bun fell apart. What I also loved were the fries on the side, which came in a chickpea batter. It was like they were beer battered and came with some extra crisp. My friends all got different tacos- shrimp, chicken, and veggie. All enjoyed them. Sweet 27 has a very diverse menu- tacos, burgers, fish, Indian, and more. There are a lot of dishes that are naturally gluten-free or easily adjusted, but also a number of "special" gluten-free dishes like the fried fish and crab cake. Even though I was decently full it was hard to say no to a dessert menu at a 100% gluten-free restaurant. I went for a raspberry and almond torte, which was pretty delicious. The top was decadent with just a little bit of crunchy crust on the bottom. Sweet 27 was an excellent option for gluten-frees and gluten-eaters. Great flavors and tons of options. I believe in the old saying if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all. Unfortunately I don't practice what I preach because I have very few nice things to say about Sweet Bar 27. I'll start with the good, service was nice, the bartender Chris was friendly, fun and interesting, he was without a doubt the best part of my entire experience, sadly I don't have much else good to say. The food is just not very good at all. The spinach empanadas are dry, I don't know how they are prepared but they honestly taste like they come from the frozen food section of the local supermarket. I also have the mango BBQ wings, these were utterly tasteless, the wings might as well have been covered in water because I did not taste anything, not even a hint of mango or BBQ sauce. I will give the fish tacos a little credit, at least they had a little kick as far as spicy index but the flavor once again left a lot to be desired. I'm not sure who the cook is but I don't believe he/she has any taste buds because the food was all around bland. They have happy hour everyday and Chris was nice so perhaps go to watch a game or have a drink but don't bother with the food, you'll only be disappointed. read more

My second time visiting Meet 27, my first time since they became BYOB. The food is immaculate. I love that they have a bunch of vegetarian options BUT they also have a bunch of meat eater fare as well. I wouldn't really call their food "american" b/c there's not a ton of generic "american" options but lots of indian/pakistani food options. I started with the Batata Vada which is potatoes in chickpea tempura w/ tamarind and mint sauces (very indian restaurant style and very delicious), not greasy, fried just enough, very tasty. i followed w goat curry (oh the flavor!), spicy, tender, culinary satiety. the sides were also fantastic. i had spicy kale and plantains/black beans/salsa....surprisingly spicy and collard green like...cut small enough to be palatable. the plantains are amazing. sweet and then the beans w/ it, tangy onions, and tomatoes from the salsa. so they don't have any adult beverages? well, to be honest I initially turned and walked out the door the first time I attempted to eat here again and I wanted a drink w/ dinner after a hard day. I decided to throw my boyfriend a surprise birthday dinner this year. With celiac and other food allergies in our families, my main challenge was finding a place that would accommodate everyone's needs. Having been to both Sweet27 Cafe and Sweet27 Restaurant, I already knew the food was amazing, and after looking at their website I found they were a suitable choice for all the other aspects I needed to consider. Score! About a month in advance, I gave the restaurant a call. They put me in touch with Richard who was very personable and incredibly helpful! I filled him in on all of my plans and he had a very "can do" attitude about everything. Since we were expecting a party of 37, he said they would prefer to do a set menu. The set menu I went with included appetizer and entree then, rather than individual desserts, I got cakes to keep the birthday vibe. The set menu had lot of variety. It included 6-7 options in each category and was very reasonably priced! Leading up to the event, Richard was very helpful in answering all of my questions about the cakes, menus, decorations, layout, etc. He also came up with the idea of adding a personalized birthday message to the top of the printed menus, which my boyfriend absolutely loved! I made a centerpiece and knew people would be bringing gifts so Richard offered to set up a small side table for those things. Everything seemed to be falling into place so easily. The day of the party my boyfriend was horribly devastated. He thought everyone had forgotten his birthday. It was perfect!! I knew it was going to make the surprise that much more epic! We found parking about two blocks up. I did my best to distract him as we approached the restaurant so he didn't look in and see anyone. As we walked in the front door, everyone was lined up across the upper level and shouted "SURPRISE". It almost blew us off our feet. I have never seen him stunned speechless. It was absolutely perfect! :) They obviously weren't able to sit us all at one table, so they had several little table groupings set up. Although we were scattered, it was still intimate and we didn't feel disconnected from anyone. The way the restaurant is set up, with its sunken bar area, dim lighting and rows of mini paper lanterns striping the ceiling, it has such a cozy atmosphere on it's own. This was a huge benefit because it meant I didn't need to do as much decorating. I had sent a friend up earlier with some balloons that were nicely placed on all the tables and there was a long table along the back wall with the cakes, gifts and the centerpiece. Within minutes of walking in the door our waitress came up and introduced herself. She was incredibly sweet and, with the help of another waitress, did an amazing job keeping up with all of us. Somehow they remained kind, calm and collected while managing to stay on top of everything. Absolutely excellent service! Drinks were immediately being served and appetizers quickly followed. The appetizers were amazing, and huge! I tried the Indian Tostadas for the first time, which were absolutely to die for! Such a fiesty, yet crisp and refreshing combination of flavors. I also had a taste of my friends Batata Vada, which was delicious, and had a few pieces of the bf's Fried Calamari, which was out of this world! Knowing people can be a bit picky, I was worried about some of our guests with the entrees. But, to my surprise, everyone dug right in and was stuffed to the gills. I ordered the Pork Vindaloo because it's my favorite dish there, but after the party I may have a new favorite. I took a bite of someones Malaysian Penang Chicken and it jumped to the top of my list. I didn't think it could get much spicier than the vindaloo but I was definitely wrong. So much spicy deliciousness! It actually made my eyes sweat (I was definitely not crying). ;) The cakes were absolutely gorgeous! I was thrilled when I found out they could make a cake from any of their cupcake flavors, however this made choosing insanely difficult because they all sounded amazing. In the end I went with "The Hostess", which was a chocolatey dream layered with cream filling that put Hostess to shame, and "Strawberries & Cream", which was sweet, silken and spectacular! They were so delicious everyone kept asking "are you sure these are gluten free?" It was truly a magical night! We had a blast and I'm sure most of our guests will be returning customers. Most importantly, my boyfriend had an amazing birthday! He was smiling ear to ear the whole night and for days following. Mission accomplished! :) When I first decided to plan a surprise party I had anticipated a certain level of stress and prepared myself for the possibility of things going wrong in the process. Not a single miss with dinner. I came here for a friend's birthday party along with 13 people. The restaurant handled our table smoothly! With the first bite it was extremely oily, as orange colored oil dripped everywhere and made a mess. The main part of the taco the duck was meh. Barely any taste and you could not tell it was duck. It was chewy and almost rubbery. Definitely not cooked properly. Luckily there were two tortillas to hold the taco together, otherwise everything would fall apart. Portobello Mozzarella Burger with Fries - Again the portobello was oily. Who is the chef of this place? Why are they so heavy handed with the oil? It was drenched in oil. Bland and oily mushroom in a bun. Fries where unique and different. Yummy & crunchy. But the two sauces were meh. The sweeter one taste like pure sugar and the spicy sauce was better, but not complex at all. Skip this one. Fish Sandwich with Fries- Small portion of fried fish on a bun with a small drizzle of chipotle tartar sauce and lettuce and tomato. Again fries were the only good part of this meal. Avoid Sweet 27. The plating is excellent. Food looks amazing, but there is nothing special about it. The service and food are meh. It is nice that it is gluten-free, but I will not be visiting again. read more

Really 3.5 but giving it the 4 star bump for the effort. Came in for the first time, and for Mother's Day brunch. They opened at 11:30, and that was the first available reservation. That's more like lunch time for me, but that's OK. Atmosphere was a little dark, but I really liked the original art on the walls. The tables, however, nearly cause me to give a 3 star rating. I'm not that tall (6') but I couldn't fit my legs under the table. They appear to be handmade; at least the bases anyway. The tabletop supports are simply too large; and every table looked to be the same way. My 5'9" tall wife had the same problem. Also, the floor and table top were a little sticky. Another patron who came in after us complained to her server about the sticky floors, so I know it wasn't just me! Speaking of service, they were good-to-excellent throughout. We had tag team service, but they were never intrusive or hovering. Owner gave all the moms a fresh rose which was incredibly arromatic. Nice touch. Restaurant is BYO (not sure why it says "full bar" above; they have a nice bar with nothing on it). I knew this in advance and brought in a bottle of champagne, which they uncorked for no charge. I thought there was a corkage fee, but maybe they waived it? Server offered to keep it chilled, but then never brought an ice bucket. That was the only service hiccup. No biggie. Fixed price menu included a nice bevy of options, and the portions were actually too big. Wife had the crabcake to start, which had a surprising amount of heat in the spice. I think I detected cinnamon, too? Nice amount of crab; I didn't see any filler. Served on top of an elegant citrus sauce; mango I think. Really delicious. I had the batata, which I think was chopped brocolli formed into a ball, breaded, and deep fried. Served with two sauces, and I think overtop of a bed of balsamic vinegar. Excellent starter. Second course was a salad, and for whatever reason the menu listed the wrong lettuce (burrata). I don't recall the replacement, but it was tasty, and again way too generous a portion. Main course: for me, I had the seafood plate, which was a bit confused I thought in terms of the presentation, as well as the sauce. It needed a bit more kick. The salmon was overdone, and the mussels appeared to be Sly Stalone's. I've never seen mussels that large. The shrimps were the best part of this dish, with the scallops a close second. Wife had the bacon wrapped cornish hen, which was absolutely huge (looked like a whole chicken) and she barely finished 1/4 of it. Tasty, though. Daughter had the chicken lollipops, which were probably a little too spicy for her. She made due, though. Another table with kids nearby wasn't as placatable, and I'm pretty sure they didn't touch their food. For the next Mother's Day, if they want to do brunch, they should consider adding a more kid-friendly menu. Dessert offered a choice of a lemon cake or a chocolate raspberry cake. I chose the latter, while the wife chose the former. We ended up trading, though I thought both were delicious. A tremendous value for sure, and we will definitely return. read more

Interesting fusion restaurant in Charles Village. I got the bombay chicken: a creamy, savory curry without the spice. My friends got the goat curry, the eggplant, and the baked cauliflower and liked what they ordered. The decor was cool and service was decent, but not amazed by what Sweet 27 is offering. read more

I LOVE this place. First of all, food is delicious, menu is varied, atmosphere is good, server was pleasant. Even more importantly for me, this place is 100% gluten free. Lots of vegan options as well. If I lived in Baltimore, I would come here ALL THE TIME. read more

This was the second time I came here with my gluten free friend. First - breakfast second - lunch/dinner. First, they give you a lot. And I always have leftovers which is great. I think the price is justified. So my meal experience (lunch/dinner), we got a veggie pizza and mango barbeque chicken. The mango bbq is very sweet, but not too sweet in a way that you can't eat it. Veggie pizza is surprisingly good! (The whole place is gluten free) The rice was a bit dry but it was okay. Garlic Mashed potato was really good I recommend it as a side! So desserts: they have a lot of dessert selection. I love their cupcakes, I've tried their carrot, red velvet, coconut, and chocolate peanut butter, all above my expectation. I am impressed by their international selection, next time I come im trying the duck taco! read more

A friend of mine is a huge fan of Sweet 27, knows the owner, and they just had to share it with us. I was a bit skeptical, especially because it was a gluten-free menu, and I kinda like glutens! I didn't know what to expect, and I was blown away. I had no idea that ANY of the food was gluten free! We got chickpea coated chicken wings (spicy, just a little weird) and veggie fritters (almost like samosa cakes) compliments of the owner, and each was a spot on starter. Chicken juicy and crispy, veggie fritters well-seasoned and flavorful. For an entree, I had a duck curry with a salad and rice, and my wife ordered shrimp and grits. Duck curry was a first for me, thick and spicy sauce, with that all-dark so delicious duck meat. Shrimp and grits, popping shrimp over creamy grits with a pretty killer sauce. Both top quality, fine dining but still comfort food dishes that would stack u against any comparable establishment. To close, we shared desserts from the bakery, a caramel-pecan tart and a peanut-butter chocolate square, all flour-less, all packed with richness. The even gave us some gluten-free cupcakes to go, compliments of the owner again, and better than most other cupcakes. They serve beer, and some local choices (I had Duckpin), and overall it was a great meal, cool environment, and a sweet Baltimore-royalty mural on the upper dining room wall. The food is great, but we were severely overcharged. The amount and the strange way the woman who rang us up kept avoiding eye contact and was acting suspicious should have signaled that this was on purpose. But, we paid and left but realized it was way too expensive. We went back in and asked for an itemized receipt. The same woman who checked us out said immediately "oh did I overcharge you?" She couldn't pull up our receipt but said the beer we ordered was $13. I said, "all the same compared to the menu prices you overcharged us." She re-rang our order (and the beer was $10 not $13) and it was way less. She opened the register started handing me cash without calculating exactly how off she was (almost like she was caught and wanted me to leave). This is shady and I bet not enough people question their bill. Be careful if you eat here. read more

To be frank, there aren't many venues in Baltimore I haven't tried, so when I was invited to share in a friend's birthday celebration here--a place I hadn't even heard about, I was a little skeptical. However, I really enjoyed it. The menu has a great variety of entrees, from Indian, Mexican, and several other cuisines, and also has some good vegetarian options. I thought everything was tasty and the portions were decent. This is a nice place for groups and the service was good. I think they should have comped the birthday cake slice for our friend, but that's more a business decision than a comment on the actual food. Overall, it was a nice place with great food and menu choices, and good service so I'd definitely return. read more
