I attended the "Difficult Conversation" class at the General Assembly office in Santa Monica, California. Allison Goldberg (our instructor) was terrific. Her slide presentation, resources, and skillsets of the subject matter were fantastic and insightful. The class consists of lecture, slide presentation, sample "difficult conversation" worksheet that we all had a chance to partner up with and worked through using our desire experiences and outcome. This is a 2 hour class and it just flew by. Wished it was a half-day or a full-day immersion session. This is a subject matter that everyone can learn and benefit from. I had the privilege of taking a group class and private class with Jen before I myself taught a class. Although I only taught a group of six people, I had the best feedback I've ever had and this was all due to my training with Jen. I was in a group class of about 30-35 people, we were tightly squeezed in (thanks to tiny NY spaces), it was after work hours (so we were all tired) - and yet everyone left energetic, confident and were still talking about it days later. Her private session was amazing. I've never had one-on-one professional speaking training before and wish I had done it a long time ago. AMAZING! So glad I worked with Jen and Alli. I currently work as a full-time consultant and needed to prepare for a TED-talk style presentation for an audience of 150-200 people. While I was familiar with the subject matter I was speaking on, I didn't love the idea of being onstage in front of that many people... didn't love the idea of being amplified on a microphone... and wasn't completely sure that my delivery would be very good. But, after five awesome Fridays of storytelling and workshopping with Jen and Alli I felt prepped and ready to give a killer presentation. And I did! The presentation was amazing! What would have been a shaky and miserable moment was actually sort of exhilarating and the feedback from others about how cool and confident I came across made my day. Beyond the presentation, I've found the exercises and tricks we worked on useful in my day-to-day dealings with clients, at networking moments, and even in telling stories to with friends. It's crazy how effective Jen and Alli's public speaking classes have been. I've always been terrified of any situation that involves being in the spotlight in front of people. A lot of people might know Alli and Jen through their performance work (Time Out New York recently recognized them in the top ten funniest women in New York City). But I first met Alli and Jen in a different setting, in an accelerator program for health/bio technology startups. They were invited to give a workshop on presentation and speaking skills. That workshop was a highlight of the program and provided tremendous value to everyone. All and Jen are personable and professional, funny and effective. They really took the time to understand our sticking points and give us tailored tools to improve our presentations. I personally saw everyone in the room become dramatically better speakers in just one session. For me, that workshop opened my mind to new and better approaches to speaking and presentation, something I have to do as a lawyer practicing commercial litigation. Just understanding how to tell a good story is a life skill that will pay off over and over again. I think that almost anyone could benefit from doing a workshop with GoldJam Creative. I came into the course with high expectations on learning how to be able to get my point across in a public speaking scenario and I was not disappointed at all.
