A front desk customer service representative gave me word of mouth that my membership had been canceled. Naive as I was I trusted just that. This has racked up around 112$ of debt for me since they continued attempting to charge my empty account. I love having a credit hit because of a foul-playing employee. Edit: I'm glad the manager replied "Hi Aiden, we're glad we were able to connect and resolve your account concerns. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance." Without ever getting into contact with me, or trying to resolve my problem, they just want money they shouldn't have, regardless of if that's what I need to buy food with. On Friday 2/23/24, Group Class Fitness members of Golds gym in Mechanicsville, were notified that our classes have been cancelled as of March 1. This is my personal experience and review of Golds in Mechanicsville. If you agree, you have my permission to SHARE. Please help our voices be heard by leaving a review on Google, yelp and Facebook! *Some of struggle to not only COME to class but to KEEP coming to class for a variety of reasons. ~And apparently, some of these struggles never crossed the minds of whoever thought it was a good idea to cancel group classes at Golds.~ We've already lost the Cardio Cinema and bike room, not to mention the blackout film on the big windows having been removed! HOW is it safe to have classes in a room that reaches a temperature ABOVE the National Standard of 68*? It has gotten up to 89*! This is not Venice Beach. {There is plenty of room for free weights.} This is Mechanicsville. Where the majority of class members are women/moms who have their own reasons to be here! Are you trying to eliminate female membership? We are a tight knit group whose relationships have grown from "instructor/member" to FRIENDS. Our instructors, turned friends, know personal details of our struggles and overcomings. We are not just a number in a class to them. YOU ARE DESTROYING OUR SOCIAL OUTLET! *Some of us don't have the privilege to set our own hours and have worked hard to change our entire work schedule to make it to class. *Some of us have eating disorders. *Some of us have 100 pounds to lose. *Some of us have 3 kids to bring in so we can work out. Not to mention the staff in the kids club... I don't know many people who don't NEED to work! And their positions were just terminated! I normally don't go to this Gold's but since I was in the area, I stopped by before dinner. This one is much smaller than the Laburnum location. Bright and seems clean. One big different is it seems less of a body builder hot spot and more normal people just trying to get or stay active. The group fitness room is a little small, but I think their system works to only allow for a certain amount of people to register anyways. I really appreciate how the tvs are on different channels, not just sports like Laburnum. Definitely glad to have tried this location, now I'll be back if it is convenient. read more

I've been going to this gym since my freshman year of highschool. And I will admit that the actual equipment and other physical parts of the gym have improved since then. But that is one of the few positives I have to say about this gym. I believe management has changed more than once since then (I started going probably 6 years ago) and I will say it has been for the worse. Within the past year I have had multiple encounters with staff members that were not pleasant. The only truly kind member of the staff is Joe, and if you go to this gym you know who Joe is, absolute stand up guy. Management will also close the gym at any inconvenience leaving its customers high and dry. Closing a gym for 1 inch of snow for example is unacceptable. Especially when some gyms don't have workers staffed and there is a sign yourself in system. In all honesty that gym could be ran by one employee at a time, most of the patrons are great people and clean up after themselves. Which is why there is no reason for management to be so negligent to them recently especially. Hopefully the can get on the right track in the future but for now there is some serious work to do. read more

I have been a member of Gold's Gym for over 10 years. This week the Mechanicsville Gold's Gym abruptly discontinued all Group X classes with one week notice to members and staff. The classes have participants, most of whom have been regulars for years. I hope they will resume classes in response to the outcry from all the frustrated members. It was the services the put Gold's Mechanicsville gym above the rest. Some of the RVA Gold's are still having classes, but they are not convenient to most members. read more

Gold's Gym - Mechanicsville gives its Group Fitness patrons ONE WEEK'S NOTICE of its intent to close the Group Fitness program in order to expand the already prominent weight-lifting space. Please note Group Fitness is AN ADDITIONAL COST to the membership and Gold's Gym - Mechanicsville never made Group Fitness a priority although each class consisted of regular gym patrons (those with memberships for YEARS) and instructors that always gave 100+% to the program. Gold's Gym - Mechanicsville put constant pressure on its instructors and members related to class participation and would threaten to pull the class/program from the schedule, despite members PAYING FOR THAT SERVICE! Every class on the schedule had member participation (old and new members participating). I am abundantly disappointed in Gold's Gym - Mechanicsville management/ownership and am very sad to have to cancel my membership. I am not sure the gym understands the impact this has on the local Group Fitness members. Spent some time at this gym a while ago. It always had a friendly/comfortable atmosphere. I like feeling that i'm not being judged at the gym since i am so new to lifting and that was definitely my experience here. The place was very clean. Equipment seemed to all be working correctly, and there was a good variety to work with and different areas devoted to different workouts. Staff was friendly. Never bothered me and the manager was kind enough to give me some pointers since I probably clearly didnt know what I was doing. They make it difficult for you to get out of your membership. You have to go up there during normal business hours Monday-Friday. I canceled and they froze my account instead. I canceled again and they still charged my account afterwards. When I spoke to a manager he was loud with all of my personal information. He looks like he is jacked up on more than pre-workout. I never got my two free personal training sessions because the guy I booked with was scared of a thunderstorm and canceled on me. read more

Make sure you read the fine print. they like to sneak fees in on you that are in the contract but they don't bring to your attention. Things like an annual $50 fee or the fact that when you cancel your membership you will still have to pay one more months membership after the current month. They will take you for every dime they can. read more

Is there such a thing as zero stars? If you're trying to catch MRSA or a bacterial infection, this is the gym for you! I have been reluctantly using this gym for several months now in hopes that it would get better, but it hasn't. They had money for a big new green area but they can't afford a porter/janitor and clearly the current staff doesn't clean (according to them they can't process payments either-wow), they would rather hide behind the front desk on their phones. The gym floors and weight area are always covered in animal hair, dirt and debris. The bathrooms are disgusting to say the least. Toilets covered in filth, trash and dirt in every corner. Hair all in the showers (still in the same places they have been for ATLEAST A MONTH). The gym is supposed to be something yoh enjoy and as far as Golds Gyms, this is the nastiest I have ever seen. If it weren't for the location and hours I would have been long gone, and finally I am joining a new gym as we speak. After bringing it up to several people I know, others have left for the same reasons. Hell, check out other various reviews as of late. Compel fitness has been the worst experience I have ever gone through. I've stuck it through for almost year because I was already wrapped up into their BS. But I highly recommend that YOU DO NOT sign up with compel fitness. You will have better luck finding a freelance trainer at any gym who are more than willing to accept a new client. Compel trains their employees to reach out to be client emotionally and they rush over all the fine print of the contract. Even compel trainers would recommend you find a freelancer just don't ask them while they are clocked in. The program is poorly ran. Instagram trainer videos would help you better than compel. The person who signs you up could care less about you after they get your signature. Even the trainers will tell you this is all true if you get them off the clock. Pretty nice gym; nothing fancy. There's plenty of equipment for you to get your workout on, and for those who are intimidated by the fact that Gold's has a clientele that look like they were born with dumbells, this one is not so much so. It's the closest to my house, and it definitely beats the crowd at the locations in the Fan and in Willow Lawn. If I had a complaint, and it's not really one, it's that the gym isn't setup to host any group classes, but if you just want to come use the machines or free weights, you're good to go. Always see what specials are going on and find out if your employer has any deals with the gym. read more

Love this gym! Just signed up for a gold membership with the corporate partner program. The staff was so knowledgeable and friendly. They even worked with my crazy schedule and made arrangements for my paperwork to be setup during the day and finalized when I got off work. Time for a bit of an update in regards to the changes I see here. I use to come to this location frequently as it was most convenient for me. I stopped because of the aggressive sales from compel fitness and the lack of customer service however, this golds seems to have improved a bit since then. The front desk associates can be hit or miss when it comes to greeting members and just with customer service overall. (I'd love to see this improve greatly!). The personal trainers don't nag you while you workout, and they've added the cycling studio which I'd to try soon! All in all seeing some positives for this gym that outweigh the minor negative things. Only downside is there aren't really any weekend group exercise classes and I really wish they would get a yoga or Pilates class and keep it like the other golds locations. read more

This gym just opened (Summer '10) and is an express location, meaning no pool, no classes. Luckily, that's just what I was looking for! What I didn't know before, though, is that Gold's locations are franchises, so getting a membership to one doesn't necessarily mean you can go to the others. I got the "express" membership which was on special when I signed up: only $9.99 a month, which is stellar! It's a month-to-month situation, with no official contract, but that rate is locked in as long as I want to keep paying it. I *may* upgrade eventually, though, to the $19.99/month membership so I can use other gyms when I travel, bring guests, use the tanning, go to another gym with a pool or to take a class, or whatever else I can't do now for the cheap price. For now, though, I'm more than satisfied. The gym is clean, has more than enough brand-new equipment, has a friendly and helpful staff, runs 5 tv channels on screens in the front of the gym, has a private room for watching movies while you work out, and is in a very convenient location. Probable future problems: parking is going to be an issue during holiday shopping, but isn't it always? read more

A while back I voiced my opinion about the cleanliness of the women's restroom (in behalf of my wife). Golds management took my comment and made corrections to their process to assure these restrooms are very clean. My wife says that the conditions in the women's room are highly improved. Tried to call to see if they were open, as some of the other affiliated Gold's gyms in the area were closed due to weather. Their voice-mail says they are still closed by order of the governor! This is the only gym I have attended besides a church gym. I cannot imagine finding a better gym. The staff is amazing. I have been going for about 8 months. They know my name when I walk in. They always greet me. If I am not with my workout partner they always inquire about him. Special shout-out to Jay and Roslyn for their great service and making me feel like I'm at home. When I first started going to the gym I was very intimidated and shy. But due to their welcoming personality I have grown to feel very comfortable and confident walking in and working out. That is huge. I typically go in the evenings but I have also been early morning. I tend to enjoy the evening crowd the most. This location is very busy on Monday nights. read more

Visting town not a bad gym ample parking not sure if that's a pro here in Virginia . Staff is friendly . Machines are plentiful . Cost me 15$ one time fee for the day which is kinda lame considering most gyms will let you try out there gym once( promo ) and get a feel for it especially if there's potential that you'll be back and become a member . I've only been here twice so far but I felt compelled to write because of all the negative feedback on customer service. I've never had to wait at the desk, and the staff are kind and helpful (including the daycare staff). The space is clean, locker rooms are nice, and there's plenty of equipment available in the afternoons. Parking is also easier here than the willow lawn location. Maybe the rude staff are gone at this point, so give this place another try. read more

Nice gym with plenty of equipment. Like any other gym, it's crowded during the peak times after work. Most of the time you can still get a machine w/o waiting. The crowd dies down after 7:30 pm or so. I have the express membership of $9.99/month, which is a fantastic deal. No contract, and it's all month to month for $9.99. The way I look at it is that if I bought a really nice, gym quality treadmill or elliptical machine for $1,500, at $9.99/month, it would take me 12 years to pay for it. In other words, I can have a gym membership for 12 years or buy a machine... not too hard to make that decision! The only things I don't like about this location are: 1) because it's small, with no room to expand, classes will not ever be available. It would be nice to have that option. Although if you upgrade to $19.99/month, you can go to other Gold's locations to take classes. Nice option, but not ideal; and 2) there never seems to be any help available if you need to know how to use a piece of equipment. You can sign up for some group demonstrations or orientations, but they limit the size of the group to 3 or 4. When I tried to sign up several times, the classes were booked for months and months out, and those were even at times during the day on a week-day. Overall, I really like it. read more

IA signed up for the month to month membership and they debited my account for three months after I had called five times to cancel and remove my credit card information. This is a basic gym...enough for you to get in get out. Nothing too special. The theater room is nice however they need a space for people to stretch out and do floor exercises. You have lay in the walkway to get this accomplished. But overall it is ok read more
