I had a procedure (septoplasty for deviated septum) done by Dr Michael I Dougherty of ENT Specialists of Illinois a few days ago, and so far I am pretty happy with the overall experience at the facility. I know a main concern with most seems to be the facility billing upfront, which I also found weird, however, when I informed my insurance company, they said it isn't uncommon for billing to occur beforehand. That being said, I paid the bill the day of the visit. Check in went smoothly, and I was shortly after brought into the pre-op area by Nurse Drei (I believe that is the spelling of his name). The area was not quite as I expected, as it was 7 beds relatively close together separated by curtains. I became skeptical and confirmed with Nurse Drei the surgery wouldn't be happening there, as I would have walked away in a heartbeat. He confirmed it is just where I would get situated in the bed and be wheeled away to the surgery room. I changed into the gown and Nurse Drei started the IV (in my hand) without issues (not a fan of needles and I haven't had surgery so I was on edge already). My doctor and the anesthesiologist came to speak with me for a moment, and I was then wheeled back into the surgery room. The anesthesia took effect pretty quick! The last thing I remember was being bundled in the blanket on the bed and being asked where I would want to be (I said Cancun of course), and I was out! The next thing I remember, is I was waking up (incredibly groggy and confused) in the post-op recovery room, with quite the soreness around my nose area. I was given juice and water and recovered for a little bit, and then I was sent on my way home. Besides the general soreness throughout my nose and face, my bleeding ended after my first day/night, and I am going on day 4 at a good recovery pace. Overall, good experience with the Doctor, the facility, and all the staff, coming from someone with no prior surgery facility experience. read more

I was originally nervous to do a surgery outside of the hospital. I was pleasantly surprised. We had a great experience for my son's tonsillectomy! The staff was friendly and helpful, going above and beyond. My son was upset waking up from anesthesia and the nurses held him on their lap to console him, so thankful for that. Facility was clean, procedure was quick and flawless. I saw some bad reviews for the payment "estimate" ahead of the procedure. All we had to do was ask for a break down and they provided it which we were then more than happy to pay. I would definitely use golf surgical again! read more

My 9 year old son recently had his adenoids removed + a frenectomy with Dr. Walner (ENT). My kids have had a few minor procedures in the past, but mostly at Lurie Children's downtown. We liked Dr. Walner after our consultation so were happy to do the surgery wherever he was performing it. I have to admit that I got a little worried about sending my little guy into surgery at Golf after reading the less than stellar reviews. However, we had nothing, but a 5 star experience here. It's a small surgical center and we probably saw only one other patient the morning we were there. All of the nurses and doctors were fabulous with both me and my son. He was a little anxious about the IV and they put him right at ease and he went into surgery like a champ. A special shout out to Nurse Cesar (sp?) who was just so awesome with my son! He came out of surgery not as happy (likely due to the effects of anesthesia), but the nurses did everything possible to make him feel more comfortable- pain meds, ice packs, movie and then finally (the winning solution) a sprite! Dr. Walner himself was also great and spent time talking to discuss both before and after the procedure. My daughter ended up having a procedure of her own at Lurie the following day (crazy week in my house) and have to say I think I preferred our experience at Golf. I hope there aren't many surgeries in our future, but if so I wouldn't hesitate to book at Golf! read more

I was forced to $1200 prior to my surgery. This was the "estimated" portion of my bill that insurance would not pay. Insurance pain all but $522 and after many phone calls I have still not been able to speak with anyone that can do anything about this massive overpay. I believe my next step will be to report to Secretary of State. I mentioned this to some low level employee and she said - "so, go ahead and do that". Quite the scam going on there. read more

We went to go to a procedure here and they tried to charge me the copay and deductible BEFORE they charged the insurance? I understand paying a copay before, but how are they charging the deductible (or anything else) before they've filed a claim with the insurance?? They wouldn't do the procedure because I wouldn't pay all, 50% or 75%. And what's crazy is when they sent me the "bill" (because I'm confused on what they're taking so much money for before insurance), the "bill" literally says "THIS IS NOT A BILL BUT AN ESTIMATE"????? I included it below. Everything else on the "not-a-bill-but-it-really-is" was in black and white except the disclaimer. It was in red. They're thieves. I was the driver of a patient. The receptionist was very rude in my opinion, sarcastic and talking to you with exasperated expressions like you were stupid. And after I asked her to stop she made ever worse faces. She was a medical bully in my opinion, making fun of the power she had over you to see or not see a doctor. It seemed liked she enjoyed the power she had and rubbed it in everyone's face so they knew who was in charge. I may be wrong but that is what I saw. read more

They have switched over to pre-registration online only. A bit of a problem for a 90 year old. And instead of them spending the time going thru the questions with her online, they now expect a family member to create an account online that the patient will never be accessing, and going thru all of the questions instead. I was recently at your facility for a colonoscopy, and you asked me to respond to my visit there. Here is my experience: I have Crohns Disease and I have had seven colonoscopies in the last 20 years, all of them preformed at a hospital. This is the first time I've used a facility like yours. Here's why I'll never use your facility again. First, let me say, your staff was excellent. From our Intake person, to every nurse I dealt with, everyone was kind and professional. I have no issue AT ALL with the treatment I received from the staff. However, the facility... I was APPALLED at the complete lack of privacy! As soon as I was led to my 'area,' I felt like I was having a procedure in the middle of a McDonald's! Let me detail it for you: -I was taken to a curtained 'stall,' which remained open the entirety of my visit, and it was never offered to be closed to give me and my husband any privacy. From the moment I got there until I was taken into the operating room, everyone who passed down this main corridor passed feet from my bed. I felt like I was on display. -Then I was led to a bathroom across the hall to change into the hospital gown. I then had to cross back across this hallway, waiting, while a family passed me by, in my hospital gown! I should have had a closed/curtained private area, and have been allowed to change there, in PRIVACY. This is how it's been done every time I've previously had this procedure. -Music was playing, too loudly. -There were loud conversations between staff happening all around us. I'm not expecting people to whisper but in some cases people were talking VERY loudly. -The head of the facility charged into my area BEFORE my procedure, asking if everything was all right and what you could do to improve my visit. While I applaud your efforts, this was NOT THE TIME for that conversation. On my way out the door? Sure. Five minutes before I'm about to go in? NO. I'm sure you are aware that there are risks ANY time anesthesia is used. I'm in a nervous state at this point and just want privacy with my husband. I don't want to be questioned about an experience I haven't finished having yet! -After the procedure, when I was dressed, had had my food, and was about to leave. I got up to use the bathroom. At the door, my arm was suddenly grabbed and a nurse insisted she HAD TO BE IN THE BATHROOM WITH ME! Ridiculous! Again, I've had seven previous colonoscopies at hospitals-NEVER has someone insisted on being in the restroom with me!!!! Wait outside? Ok. Ask me to wait a little longer, or, if I'm sure I'm not dizzy? Great. But insisting on being in the room with me- UNACCEPTABLE. Of course, I could not use the restroom and had to ask my husband to stop immediately at the closest one we could find. Please realize that I am coming from a variety of experiences with this procedure, at several different hospitals. But at none of these hospitals did I feel the incredible lack of privacy as I did at this facility. Truthfully, I was pretty shocked and upset throughout my stay there and I shouldn't have had to feel that way when I am already undergoing a stressful procedure. I hope you take these comments in the spirit of improving your facility. read more

I had eye lid surgery here last October. The Dr and surgery was great. The billing is horrible. I have yet to receive the bill from the surgical center. already hounding me about payments. Wanted me to set up payment schedule telling me what i could afford to pay. I haven't seen the bill yet. told they were sending them out. The billing for the Dr. who put me out came and was paid immediately. they then called me and harassed me for the money I sent them a copy of the cancelled check Keep getting calls from collections for months. Their posting was behind. So i would continue to get these calls until they were caught up We landed calling the Dr. who did something to make it stop. This is the worst place ever for billing. This place is a nice alternative to the hospital. I had my tonsils out here and the hubs had a nasal surgery here. The waiting area has coffee and vending machines, a TV, and some magazines. The staff is mostly good. Unfortunately there is one nurse who gives the worst IV ever and we always get her. This nurse seems to hate her job and she has an attitude. read more

Billing was a nightmare. They confirmed with insurance that I would owe $900. I was expected to pay it when I arrived, so I did. A few weeks after the surgery, I received two more bills - one for $1300 and one for $74. I've been trying for a week to get ahold of someone to explain to me with NO success. The service at the desk is less than acceptable. I was told by my doctor to arrive after the procedure that required stitches. The receptionist never called him to tell him I was here, thus I waited two hours for nothing. read more

Terrible and stressful especially for older patients. The staff insisted on presurgical forms be completed on line, when I have a visually impaired 73 year old mother who does not use the internet. I live out of state and she calls frantic so I could help her. I completed their forms, indicating the date of her negative covid test, there was no instructions to attach the results etc. They were rude in communication and insisted if the forms were not completed online through their portal they would cancel the surgery she was waiting for. The day after the forms were competed they called to insist they need a copy of the covid test results, but no instructions of how or where they wanted it sent, emailed, uploaded, flown in by the president...When I called to sort this out for her, I received no response, was passed around the phone to a voicemail 6 times. Shockingly poor customer service that will no doubt add to your patients stress going into surgery. You need some serious staff training, and some compassion and other means to help your elderly patients. Completely unprofessional and rude. read more

My son had dental surgery at this center in Oct. While the procedure was handled professionally, the billing was a nightmare! They threatened to send collection agents, when it turns out the insurance company paid in full after GOLF did their part to fill out the paperwork appropriately. What a joke! read more

I had meniscus removed in my knee fall 2018. The waiting room is somewhat bare but my sister brought magazines to read and a bottle of water for herself. The staff was friendly and the nurses kept me informed of what was happening when. Both pre & post surgical areas are quite small. The area where we waited for the surgeon to come talk to us after recovery was very open but we were close to other patients who were also waiting. I did not get a bill for about 9 months. I didn't think it was right so I called my insurance. They actually made a mistake in submitting claims, so they re-submitted. I called the surgical center to ask if I could wait for it to be resolved, but of course the answer was no. I expected there to be a problem after reading other reviews, but my credit card was reimbursed within 2 weeks after the claim had be re-submitted. Hopefully I'll never need another surgery but even tho the facility was rather tight, I would go there again. read more

This place was not a good experience in the slightest. I felt the waiting room was rough and dirty, there was no coffee for my mom during my surgery and the women at the front desk were less than accommodating and did not see to care about the patient directly. Billing was a mess, you are supposed to pay money when you first walk in and it's a large chunk. The pre-op rooms were not even rooms it was one mini hospital bed and one chair for a guest. So cramped could hear everything next to me. My nurse really made this experience awful as well. She did not explain the surgery correctly to me causing me to panic and believe that this surgery I was going to undergo was a massive and dangerous surgery when it was confirmed by the doctor that it is not that serious. She wouldn't listen to my responses very well regarding allergies and my issues with certain amnesia. Overall space is completely cramped and I did not feel safe here. Recovery was also rough, I was highly medicated but I wanted water and did not get it for quite some time. Also was having a hard time breathing out of surgery and the nurses completely dismissed it. Really not a good facility, please look elsewhere so you can feel safe and relaxed during the surgical process and not hurried and unsafe. read more

Had procedure done on 1/5/18. Didn't receive bill in the mail until 8/2/18. Bill said that the statement was 7/1/18 and payment was due 7/31/18. This is terrible billing and shady tactics to pressure you into feeling your payment is late when it doesn't even arrive in the mail until after the due date. Will NEVER go here again. It is the worst customer service Ive ever had. From the front desk to the nurses, all had bad attitudes. The nurse in the pre operative area was angry with me and was rough with the IV insertion and had stop to take a personal call. The nurses in the recovery were standing at the desk being very noisy. I wanted to go home and they kept telling me I had to wait. Overall I am appalled at the lack of professionalism in a surgical environment. read more

I had sinus surgery here. Nurse M rushed me in and was impatient with me. While talking to me, she stopped to take a personal phone call. The surgery was a long procedure and turned out good. Dr was wonderful. The recovering area was large area with nurses sitting at the desk talking & laughing loud. I asked for something for pain & was ignored. Will never go back here again! read more

Had issues with Billing Manager, Rhonda. First gal I spoke to understood the situation and only when I had to deal with Billing Manager did things feel like I was dealing with an "idiot". This person seemed a little bit "rough" to the point of rude. Did not seem she understood insurance claims. Tried to explain to her that deductible was satisfied and my coinsurance did not apply. I've talked to my insurance and they confirmed I was not required to make any kind of "prepayment" Tried explaining this but she wouldn't listen. Seemed she was set on collecting a down payment. Explained my copay was not applicable and I had an HMO and why do I have to make "down payment". She kept pushing for $$$$ and said if insurance paid 100% I would be refunded "down payment". read more
