I spent the winter developing a swing. I was already a decent golfer. I'd broken 40 in league on occasion. Even stung two together and broke 80 at Fox Hills once. But in 50 years of golf I could never draw the ball. Everything sort of faded right (except for the occasional dead pull). I always wanted to shape the ball. Hit that nice high draw. How nice it would be to have that weapon in the bag? So I signed up for 15 lessons, a swing evaluation and 6 months of simulator time. It cost what you'd expect to pay for 16 lessons. The things I didn't know about the golf swing! Here I was concerned my coach was so young I had clubs older than he was. How could I possibly need that many lessons? Turns out I needed that many lessons because that's how many I could fit in before league started. This is a gym with a personal trainer. You need to show up consistently train your mussel memory and develop a proper swing. Your coach has cameras and swing statistics on a computer telling him how every element is moving in space throughout the entire swing. That's the easy part. His experience, training, resources allow him to provide the feedback and encouragement you need to actually see progress. Well I'm happy to report it was well worth the time and money. My entire swing has changed. I've learned to draw the ball, but I can also fade the ball when I choose to. But mostly I just bomb it straight down the fairway. It's not perfect and my scoring hasn't changed THAT much. It's just way more consistent. So there it is, you get what you pay for. A life long skill that will greatly improve your enjoyment of a game you're gonna play for years. Years from now you'll think it was cheap. read more

Went for a full bag fitting that costs $250; supposed to be driver through putter. Was excited to try it out, verify my clubs were right for me, maybe sample some other brands, have a whole epiphany type experience. Welp, turns out cause I'm a lefty, they don't carry much in stock for us wrong side of the tee hitters, which could have been disclosed ahead of time, thus making me go elsewhere that better suits my requirements but then they'd be out of money so, yeah. Also, they only really carry what they sell so no Hogans, no Muira, Honma, no PXG. So only the big name brands that they know most people will buy, which sucks. That being said, my fitting was limited to Taylormade and Callaway drivers (they also don't carry Cobra, which is what I play now) and none of those really panned out better than what I already have. So there were no real comparable offerings to let me try, cause they didn't have any. I will say, I do appreciate not being pushed into something either so that's a positive. Irons I only was given Titleist, Mizunos & Callaway to try out. Again, not a plethora to choose from but once again, my current irons were fine for me based on the numbers gained off of the simulator. Fine. Still didn't satiate my palate for wondering what else is out there and is there something better suited to my style of play. Wasn't going to find out. Other than that, I hit two other 4 hybrids and that was it. No time for putter, no wedges available for me to try... and yet I still paid for a FULL BAG FITTING. Seems to me I got ripped off. I am only through the initial swing evaluation and 1 one-hour lesson so far. But, the way my swing coach Ethan communicates and guides me to improve is very good. The analysis tools mixed with his expert views and advice have already helped me to unlock my swing. As I go through the process, I will update with more insight and opinion. read more

I saw the Golftec ads on tv while watching a Pga tournament. I'm a 13 handicap with consistency issues. I filled out a questionnaire on Golftec's website and was contacted almost immediately by a golf coach (Xander) at the Novi location. I scheduled a swing analysis for the following Monday 3/19/18. I emailed Xander a list of things that I would like to work on. I arrived at my appointment about 30 minutes early. The Golftec building has four bays and a nice waiting room with a 10 foot by 20 foot putting green. Each bay was occupied by golfers. At my appointment time, Xander introduced himself to me and he setup bay 2 for my evaluation. On a white board in the room was a list of the issues that I had sent to Xander that I needed help to improve. Xander spent a few minutes explaining the video technology in the room. He put a lite weight set of sensors on my back and around my waist to measure lean angles and asked me to take a few swings with my seven iron. I told Xander that my third shot was typical of my normal swing. This became the "before" video. Xander analyzed my swing by comparing it to PGA player Zach Johnson. Each aspect of my swing was honestly critiqued. During the critique, Xander provided helpful tips like: stand taller, increase shoulder and hip turn, etc. After the swing analysis, Xander showed me a drill to work on that should improve my backswing and help me keep my left elbow from bending, which should help me meet my goal of striking the ball with less fat and thin shots. After I practiced the drill, I hit a few balls with my new swing, this became the "after" video. To be totally transparent, I'm a 61 year old golf hack that has been playing this game for 53 years. My tempo is off the charts high (this is bad), and my backswing makes John Daly's backswing look like a half swing. Xander estimated that he would require 52 credits/lessons to fix my swing flaws. During March the cost of the 52 credit over 12 month plan is just shy of $3,000. I wish I had these lessons when I was young. At 61, I'm not sure this old dog can revamp his swing to emulate Zach Johnson. So I paid $100 for the ninety minute swing analysis and thanked Xander for his time.
