We haven't been here in almost 6 years and it seems that they recently changed ownership. The usual drinks that we normally get was the Dirty Brown Sugar Milk with Boba. Now it tastes noticeably different. Instead of the rich flavor, it now tastes incredibly diluted and watered down. The boba is not as fresh and bouncy as it used to be. We tried to ask multiple times to see if we had the correct drink and I guess the owner said it's the right drink and recipe but the name was changed. Which I find extremely concerning and doubtful. Since my daughter and I were in the area, we decided to stop in and grab something to drink. The store was very clean and I loved the cute paintings on the walls. Thankfully, there was no wait so my daughter ordered the Dirty Brown Sugar Milk Tea and I ordered the Passionfruit Sparkling Tea. I asked if the boba pearls would be good in the Passionate drink and the lady stated that it probably wouldn't be so I really appreciated her honesty. The Dirty Brown Sugar Milk Tea was probably the best I've ever tasted in the area. It was absolutely amazing and even though we didn't modify the sugar level, it wasn't overly sweet at all. The Passionfruit Sparkling Tea was pretty good. Their Sparkling Series consisted of a variety of other drink flavors as well. The passionfruit flavor was strong, which I liked but it was very sweet. I'm not sure if I would order it again but if I did, I would request less sugar. Absolutely love Gong Cha. I've always been meaning to write my Yelp review but it always slips my mind. I always go to my go to which is a Caramel Brûlée Black Tea with 50% sugar and 30% ice and to me that is DELICIOUS. The service is average to good, as it's a very popular store. There are 2 ways to order at a register or at the kiosk, but most likely you will use kiosk instead of talking to a store employee. The best thing about using the kiosk is that you can customize your drink and look at all the options and pricing. It's very convenient; however, it can take a while to order as there is only 1 kiosk while the other employees make the drinks. The music here is K-POP oriented. I was not a huge K-POP fan but my husband is. He plays it in the car everywhere we go, so I've started to enjoy listening to K-POP, so it's nice to listen to some songs I know while waiting for the order. The downside (jk) is my husband finds more artists and his K-POP music library expands. The store has a cafe type feel and contains board games so it's a good place to hang out with friends. I usually like authentic flavors that rely on the tea leaf for flavor and I'm less into powder/artificially syrup flavored stuff. I ordered a brown sugar ginger tea with 50% sugar and pearls by accident for ~$7-8 [I wanted to order a regular brown sugar milk tea]. The drink's flavor was kind of disgusting ngl. But that was my fault for ordering the wrong item. I've had other boba tea drinks from them, and they were all average in flavor. The pearls were soft, but nothing spectacular. Shout out to fellow yelper Timmy T. for putting Gong Cha on my radar. Was looking for a boba place that has crystal boba and Gong Cha delivered! I honestly had no idea what I wanted to order, but went with a drink from their milk foam series, a creme brûlée caramel black tea. The do have crystal boba aka white pearls, for an 85 cent up charge, which I recommend you try. My husband got a Vietnamese iced coffee and he was really impressed with it as well. I think it's really interesting you can control the level of sweetness and amount of ice in your drink. The first time I went, I got 50% sweetness and it was pretty sweet. The second time I went I tried 30%. I wish they could do a little less than 30% for sweetness as it's still fairly sweet in my opinion, but the employee said they couldn't. They do offer discounts and they're listed on the back of the register for Monday thru Wednesday, so check before paying! Also, follow their Instagram, they had a little Thanksgiving special today. I've been wanting to go to Gong Cha since it opened, but we never had a chance because we live far. We also go to the next door boba place because they have food (and rice). After a year since they opened, we finally decided to try it. On our first visit, we ordered the Chocolate Marble and the Mango smoothie. For our second visit, we ordered wintermelon tea and wintermelon milk tea. We enjoyed all our drinks, however when I was drinking my wintermelon tea, I noticed that there's a tap water aftertaste in my drink. I'm not sure if they use tap water and I really don't mind if they use tap water but it would be nice if my drink tastes more wintermelon than tap water. I love the ambiance of this place. It is bright. While the place is not huge, it does not make me feel claustrophobic. It is also clean and has a couple of table and chairs if you decide to eat there. I have to give this Gong Cha location major props. I'm not from the VB area, but I have family here and I was visiting. Their menu is more extensive than the Gong Cha locations I've seen in NJ. In my opinion, their menu is also nicely organized and easy to navigate through. I wished my Gong Chas offered the same :( Purple yam smoothie was so good!! Highly recommend if you are an ube or taro lover. The matcha marble latte was also very smooth. Honestly wish I could've tried all their marble latte series.. The space itself is very spacious. It's currently closed due to COVID-19, but there is a table outside. They have a bunch of games available. I could definitely see this as a nice place to hang out. The music playing gives it a nice chill vibe as well. Employees were all helpful and pleasant. Total side note but the way to get inside the plaza was a little chaotic with these weird angle turns and stop signs. It's located next to a Walmart. Update as of 7/23: I never got a response from the manager Victoria so I had to reach out to her asking for a refund again. She contacted me and she said now the refund was sent back to my sister in law and I and it should show up 3-5 business days. Since they got a new system, I think they need to make sure how to use it and make sure the gratuities aren't automatically added. As for the drinks, this location has more than the ones I'm used to in NYC Gong Cha. They have taro slush and purple yam slush. When I inquired about the difference on the two, no one could answer me. The purple yam slush didn't even look like the one pictured as the one we got had milk foam swirled in and the picture on their wall didn't. The early grey milk tea with 3 j's was ok and the passions fruit was alright too. The prices are higher than KFT which is across the street. Update as of 7/22: I like how fast they respond back after I msg them but still no confirmation of her refunding us on 7/22 and she said not to worry that she will take care if it. Update as of 7/21: Speaking to the manager and waiting for her to refund us. Gong Cha should be ashamed of themselves, they add TIPS to the transaction even though your receipt only shows the total without it!!! Everyone keep your receipt and check your bank statement on your credit card. Call them and complain and get your refund. Well.... it was ok for me. I tried the milk tea with boba. The boba was perfectly chewy and soft. The milk tea was weak though. It did not have a strong tea flavor. It felt like I was drinking cold milk. Not sure if it's because I went within it's first month of opening and they're still working out the recipe and learning. I was so hyped up when I heard Gong Cha is finally coming to Virginia Beach because this place is where I get my bubble tea supplement when I was in Hong Kong and New York The Gong Cha in VB has totally ruined their brand because it tasted nothing like the ones I had in other places. I ordered the Pearl Milk Tea, 30% sweet and less ice. By looking at the color if the tea I already can tell it's different than the ones I had in other places. The brown color does not look like tea. It looks more watery and light. The taste, as what it looks like, no real tea flavor all. It taste like the already-made fake tea, and just brown sugar. The 30% sweet didn't taste like 30% too. It's too sweet compare to the 30% sweet from other places, for example, Kung Fu tea. The bubbles are good however, which is the reason I gave them two stars instead of one. Also the service are ok. I asked for less ice and they did it right too. Not a fan of Korean music but they're playing those in and outside of the store, if you're interested. Imma give them one last shot because my mom hasn't been to there yet and she wants to try it out. They have a HUGE menu which was pretty overwhelming to me because I'm pretty basic and just get a taro smoothie with bubbles. Just comparing the taro smoothie, it's pretty standard and nothing special. I always get 50% sugar and it was still fairly sweet. I also tried the taro green tea latte with bubbles which was different. I like how there's bits of taro chunks in it but I don't taste the tea and it seemed pretty watered down. I got my nephew the mango smoothie with 50% sugar which he thought was good and couldn't tell the difference.
