Oh, heyyyy, Good Dog. Nice to meet you. You're reminiscent of two of my favorite places in Cleveland, Ohio - a grilled cheese joint called Melt, & a hot dog bar called Happy Dog. Somehow, Good Dog manages to feel like both of these wonderful places mixed into one, making me wish I were Chattanooga local so I could come back often. A friend & I stopped into Good Dog while wandering downtown Chattanooga on a very, very cold February day. It's got great, wacky decor - old holiday-themed lawn ornaments, a wall-sized rendering of some guy's face, etc. - all of which serves to make you feel, upon entering, like Good Dog is located in a good friend's quirky apartment. My friend & I couldn't decide what we wanted, so we ordered two hot dogs to split - the DOGfather (garlic cream cheese, pesto, red peppers, & grilled peppers & onions) & the Fajita (lime cream, salsa, grilled peppers & onions, jalapeños). We were worried, after ordering, that they'd be too similar, but the pesto & jalapenos made for different enough combos that both dogs tasted completely different - & both were delicious. Flavorful, juicy, well-dressed... we wished we'd gotten another! The only downside to our visit was what I'm sure was a fluke. We placed our order at the counter then settled into a booth to wait for our food. As the restaurant started to clear out, we found that we were the only people left - & still no food. Finally, my friend approached the cashier to ask about the wait... which was when we learned that the kitchen never picked up our order. They hadn't made it yet, & they wouldn't have unless we said something. I feel like they should've noticed sooner - we were the only people in there, & we didn't have any food! - or maybe given us a cupcake to make up for it, but they were apologetic & friendly (& we weren't in any sort of a hurry), so it all worked out fine. Two hot dogs (one specialty, one with mustard), two canned beers and a large fry was $20, so the price rates an "a-ok" as well. The overall atmosphere is a cozy little "joint." We came by thinking that this would be a quick meal but it took a really long time to get our food. We tried a couple of sausages and dogs. I can't even remember which sausages we had so it wasn't that memorable. The sausages range from $8-$10 each. It is kind of steep for a "dog" in my opinion. As for the dogs, they are just a regular hot dog with sauce on it. We got the Hawaiian ($5) which has bbq sauce, bacon, and salsa. This might have been better than the overpriced sausage. I noticed, however, that you can add individual toppings. They also have a lot of really interesting sauces out on the tables so it might be better just to get a plain dog and try out the different sauces. Located in a small strip of cute little shops and dining areas (i.e. Clumpie's ice cream) that is near Walnut Street Bridge and Coolidge Park. The people at this place are exceptional. We have multiple food allergies but we're able to eat a few menu items with of course some special handling. Starting with the managers, down to the staff....no problem attitude, willing to change gloves, make fresh batch of fries and oversee our order to make sure all precautions were taken. Being that our eating out options are extremely limited, having restaurants willing to accommodate truly makes a world of a difference. I really wanted to like this place better. We've been there before with mixed results, and decided to give it another try. The decor is pure Chattanooga. It's brilliant. The Christmas yard ornaments are classic; the mismatched panelling and bottle bottoms are creative and interesting. I even think the menu is pretty good. Bonus points for the Reuben dog, lots of options from savory to even a little sweet, some spice, some acid, some old standbys. But the execution is really, really subpar. They messed up our order out of the gate, and looked at us like we misordered. I got a gluten free bun. It's a brand I know, but they didn't heat it up at all, with predictable results. Dry, crumbly, cold, just horrible. It's not the brand; it's the execution. The toppings were way too al dente for my taste. The flavor profile was interesting, but just not enough. The fries were the soggy, greasy kind you expect to get at a cheap fast food joint, for upscale prices. Contrast this with Urban Stack that nails the execution every time. There's very few places, if any, like this in Chattanooga or the surrounding areas they offer something, a hot dog, and put their own spin on it and make it really unique and different. the food here is good; you will get full. Every table has a hole in it to hold your fries. It took my wife and I few times before one of the servers told us this. Now, I'm only giving this place three stores because of the price and the time you have to wait. like I said, the food is very good. However it is a hot dog. If you were to get all the extras on one it could possibly cost you almost $10. The wait times can vary. I've been there where it took just a few minutes and I've been there where it's taking almost 20 minutes. In closing, if you get their fries, make sure you get lots of frit sauce. I am celiac, which makes eating out pretty hard, but my best friend also has an allergy to onions. So a hot dog place may not have been our best choice. That being said, this place is amazing! Extremely expensive for what the meal was. It took about 15-20 minutes for our orders to come to the table. The different ketchup choices are very awesome, the curry being my personal favorite. Regrettably, since I have, then it is a 4 (I'd love to give it 4 and a half). They have a killer selection of hot dog options! Everything is affordable and some of the combinations are just great ideas. I got the "NY Street Cart Dog", which was the perfect mix of spicy brown mustard, saurkraut and perfect sweet onion relish. Right on the money. Because I have no willpower, I also opted for the "Pimento Cheese Dog", because they had me at home-made pimento cheese. Really great and paired with mayo-y frite sauce. And it gets better, they had AWESOME frites; they serve them in a paper cone that conveniently fits in the tables. As a twenty year vegetarian, it is certainly out of the ordinary for me to review a hot dog joint. Truly, for me, a tofu dog is a tofu dog. Nothing special...until I met the ketchup bar at The Good Dog. Homemade ketchup changes everything! They have 2, make that 3, of the most amazing condiments known to the dog! Firstly, there is a wasabi ketchup that is out of this world! Just enough kick to make that very unspecial veggie dog special. The homemade curry ketchup is a delicious treat for the taste buds and combined with the homemade honey mustard it took that plain old veggie dog to new heights! In addition to these condiments, they created "Dog Dust", a blending of spices and herbs that really added to the flavor of the dogs and the frites. I told the lady behind the counter they should retail that dust, they'd make a killing! The "frites" come in a huge order...we split one with the entire family. I am not a big fan of mayo, so I did not try their euro-mayo frite dip...but the wasabi ketchup was AWESOME on those frites. I walked in blind--having never heard of the place-- and didn't know the story. The three rating was my first impression after walking out. Now after spending a little time on the website, I wish I had known what Bertman's was or that the wasabi was homemade. It would have added to my impression. But three-stars is A-OK. I came with four boys and another adult male. My oldest son and I had the chili/slaw dog because we are serious about flavor. Was the chili sweet? That caught us off-guard and we didn't prefer that. Good Dog takes all those preconceptions and karate chops them in the testicles. I've eaten NYC and Chicago hot dogs in their respective cities, and Good Dog is right up there with them. There is a good selection of hot dogs, plus salads, cupcakes, beers, etc. The owner always remembers me by name, even though I only make it back maybe once a year now. When I first get to Chatt, this is my first stop. Sometimes I cry a little when I take that first bite. You know how on The Price Is Right, you always know when the prize is gonna be a new car? That's how my taste buds feel about the fries. When I walk in, my tongue starts pre-gaming. The assorted condiments are fantastic....curry ketchup and wasabi ketchup are to die for. I read today in a local paper that they stuff their own sausage. So I saw that and 20 minutes after work I was there. I talked to the young lady that does the stuffing and we really had a good chat about sausage. From spice collections to how to and what types. I ordered the chorizo sausage and some fries. The tables in this place have 4 holes cut into the tangles for your fries. How cool is that? Then the chorizo came out and it's was a little dry. The cause was they blanch their sausages or par cook them for those of you from Rosalinda. The bun was stone cold and kind of tough. But, the chorizo had a good flavor and the dog as a whole was retry darn good. I will say that my chorizo is much redder there theirs. Different recipe I guess? We went to the front asking when we would be getting the food after 50 minutes. We were told we were next and 2 others got their food. We finally got them after asking for our money back.
