Park in the parking lot off Centre St (just off Beacon - Lady Grace is on the corner). The store is just left of the Gap. It is hard to find. I parked along the street and walked down Beacon and Harvard and finally found the parking lot in back. It was well lit and had lots of spaces and is free after hours. The store is so beautiful, classy, stylish and also informative with brochures that are well written. If you have never been to a adult store than this is the one to go to. This isn't a question of quality: these are brand-name toys and you just get to pay more. If you feel like you need to pay an extra $50 to have a really warm, positive, sex-friendly experience at a toy store, then by all means, go ahead and shop here. If you need to buy some toys, go online like every other person: you'll get all the same advice without the inflated price tag. When this store was Grand Opening, it was great. The sales clerks were funny and funky and a shopping trip there made you excited about sex, in a goofy/human kind of way. Since Good Vibrations took this over, it's become strangely de-sexualized - the Barnes & Noble of sex shops, if you will. I am not only irritated to have been treated w/such glib condescension, but also *angry* about the damage that this sort of behavior does to the larger goal of creating safe spaces for people of all genders & orientations to feel comfortable & respected in exploring & engaging with sexuality on their own terms. Yesterday I went in w/my partner, & we took our time wandering around to see what was new. Two employees (who were fine) checked in w/us at different points to see if we needed help, then left us alone to browse. Cool. The problem was at check-out, when I bought a large bottle of the lube I've used for the last ~6 years...& made the mistake of saying it'd be great if GV carried little TSA-proof bottles that could be refilled. The woman ringing me up said, "Well, we sort of do," meaning the single-use packets that they sell for maybe 5 of the 30-some-odd kinds of lube on the wall. I said that I'd bought some of those before, but-- and she cut me off to say that one particular brand does sell a small bottle that can be refilled, but that they were out of it. "Does the bottle already come w/lube in it?" I asked. She looked at me like I had two heads. "Yeah." "Oh, I can't use silicone lubes, so that wouldn't work for me," I replied. "Why?" she asked, & in a surprisingly combative tone. Now, let me remind you: We are not standing over by the Great Wall of Lube. I have not asked for assistance or advice in selecting a lube. Maybe I have a lot of silicone toys at home; maybe my partner or I has a prosthetic or medical device w/silicone parts; maybe I like to have sex in the shower & don't want to slip/fall; maybe silicone doesn't work w/my body, or maybe I just don't like the consistency. Unfortunately, however, my partner was next in line & had to check out--& the woman behind the register still wasn't done. "I've NEVER heard that," she says, and barely manages not to roll her eyes. Though Kim's personality is taken from this place, the good thing is the atmosphere is still gay, women, and couple friendly, unseedy AND very pro-sexuality and health--which is great. You'll find that you can touch and test all the vibrators and dildos in the store. The women who work here are fun and easy to talk to, and there is a very large book section, too. The only problem is that without Grand Opening, this place is a little more "cleaned up" and many people might miss the old, quirky feel of the Kim Airs shop. Ehhem Karen and Becki do have a point, part of the experience has been lost--because Kim was such an active member in the Boston sex community. Still, if you're a woman, this store is better than shopping online AND at Amazing (a store in Fenway where you can't test the sex-toys AND it's NOT geared directly at women) Also, there are pluses to the new atmosphere--the place is MUCH bigger than Kim's shop and more open. I remember feeling cramped in Kim's shop much of the time. I also think that the store is better kept in stock than I remember Kims being. However, I want to judge Good Vibrations on it's GOOD qualities rather than against the highly independent Grand Opening. It's still woman-friendly--you can test products AND they're very active in the community. This is a wonderful SEX-positive and couple positive store and I have to applaud them for their efforts. I must warn buyers though--if you're looking for porn or sex DVDs though it would be best to look elsewhere--their porn section is limited but they do have an interesting museum inside of old vibrators from the 30's and 40s and beyond! I really miss Grand Opening, the old school shop, when it was still inside the arcade building, crowded with shelves of stuff, and a huge movie selection. In addition to retail, they also had seminars, classes, massage circles - and who can forget the amateur porn festival at the Coolidge... Kim Ayres, the previous owner, decided to focus more on education than retail, and now we have this chain sex shop as a replacement. As far as sex shops go, it's actually not bad. No cheesy gimmicks, no obnoxious bachelorette party paraphernalia, and the staff is not at all sketchy. They actually have a little bookstore in the back with enthralling titles like, "Straight woman's guide to fellatio," and "Fist in a Bush: the art of fisting." (I'm not making this up). Don't forget to check out their mini-museum of antique vibrators. Some look like sewing machines and others like instruments of torture, fascinating either way. I did think, though, that the toy selection was a little poor, and anything that looked interesting was out of stock. Talk about a disappointment. They also have a lot of space in that store which they are not utilizing for anything. And I really miss the movies. read more

Good Vibrations offers a wide array of toys and accessories that are a lot of fun to browse. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday to pick out something special and just look at some of the things in the shop to get some ideas. The shop attendant greeted us but was not a hover craft. She was around if we needed her, which was nice, but didn't make us uncomfortable at all. The selection of products is a bit overpriced for my liking and the variety is limited due to the size. The bondage items like the cuffs and rope were also synthetics but priced like the real thing, which I was not fond of. There are plenty of little books and guides to browse through, which was a major plus. The layout also made it easy to figure out where certain things were likely to be and therefore made shopping really intuitive. Overall I like the location and the accessories the place offers. Plenty of good floggers, body lotions and intimate gels with a nice mixture of toys and a decent sale selection. My only complaint is that not everything has a clear price tag, so that was a bit annoying after a bit of browsing. I will definitely come back in the future. read more

Best experience at a sex shop ever. The staff there really knows what they are talking about. My friend and I were going for The Rabbit (thanks to SATC hype), but one of the Sex Educators working there explained the differences in materials/care/longevity of the vibrators there, and I have to say that I'm pretty pleased with what I left with. I miss Grand Openings :( In general, this is the best shop of its kind in the area, but the selection is still limited, and the staff is much less knowledgeable than other places I have been to. It's a good thing I walked through the Arcade building to the parking lot or I never would have found Good Vibrations! Sad to say that the last time I was at Grand Opening it was still inside & on the second floor, and forgot they'd moved when Good Vibes came in. Shannon put everything so well--I loved Grand Opening and it seems like there's something missing from/too generic about Good Vibrations. But it's almost unfair to compare them since they're both walking the same path; GO was just a little bit ahead, and so infused with Kim's spirit that anything else is bound to be a letdown. The good news is the vibrator museum is interesting, you can still play with the hardware, and they offer classes. The staff was helpful with any questions I had, and seemed happy to be there. Things were well labeled with care directions. But I was disappointed that there was almost no DVD selection, they didn't have much for books, and there wasn't a lot in the way of BDSM. Those just seem like it's that way all the time, but I was surprised at the lack of stock for so many other products. I don't know if the shipments or slow or if it's all the college kids back in town, but they were out of A LOT of products, from books to vibrators to lube, and most of it was the good stuff, the really nice silicone toys, the upscale vibes reviewed in BUST. If you're looking for something specific right away, call first to make sure they have it. I really hope it's just a temporary glich. There's no other (woman-)friendly neighborhood sex shop like it Boston, and it's still the best place to try before you buy! read more
