Most Goodwills or Thrift stores are a gamble. I've been to the Avon location many times over the years, while I haven't found the great Picasso masterpiece, this is a pretty solid store. This Goodwill isn't the largest, it is still a nice size. Their clothing is sorted by size and by color. The books could be much better organized. If the kid's books, and at the very least "adult" books could be on separate shelves it would make browsing a lot easier. It is worth a look as most will run you $1.99. One of the things that makes me a bit sad is when I find someone's grandma in a framed portrait. You won't be finding my grandma's picture at any Goodwill. Another thing that I'm a bit confused about, is whoever gets rid of handmade pottery. They all have their names engraved on the bottom. These are very unique and likely made in high school, then given to Grandma. On today's trip I found a very cute plush bird. I have a few of these birds in my office. I've stopped going to the Avon location. The increase in prices is absurd. Often there are new items with store price tag still on - the Goodwill price is usually the same price (or more) than I could purchase new. Used boys shorts $7.19, boys sports brand t-shirts $6.99, etc. Carts are filthy - I don't think they have ever been hosed down. Often, stained clothes on the floor. Nearly all items are overpriced, and I'm very disappointed to see this store go downhill fast. The positives about the store - very helpful staff, great location with plenty of parking. read more

KINDEST WORKER I'VE EVER MET Some of my friends and I recently went to goodwill and had the pleasure of meeting William. He is the sweetest cashier we've ever meet. He was cheerful, friendly, and humorous. One of the items I was checking out didn't have a tag. While another kind worker, David, quickly solved the problem, Will talked to us the entire time. I've brought home a small collection of sturdy, well-balanced glassware that we desperately needed. I discovered and grabbed two different partial sets of Dansk stoneware for my daughters (only to discover that it's important to know the pattern production dates for any 'food-grade' ceramics so you don't ingest any lead). The amount of clothes is overwhelming and I'm sorry to report not inspiring. Especially in the affluent towns, Nutmeggers are too conventional for my taste and not picky enough about fabrics. Lots and lots of jeans, of course, but not a pair that fits me. A good book section that usually carries some award-winning novels, biographies and histories still in their dust jackets and looking brand new. read more

This Goodwill was a bit cluttered; they had carriages in random spots piled up throughout the store. The clothes were hung on the ends of the rack. I think people were just throwing it anywhere. There was a jacket that was hung on the end of the rack near the dressing rooms; I thought it might've belonged to someone, but then I saw a tag on it. This worked out in a way because I liked the jacket and purchased it. Other than that, it is a typical Goodwill; just look for the color of the week to get additional savings. I found some good deals. That jacket was from the Gap and I got it for $15; that's cheap for a name brand. read more

I have been noticing the prices getting higher and higher at Goodwill and other charitable donation stores. I guess theyre jumping on the bandwagon that started with covid. Everything went up, when it shouldve gone DOWN, to help people who couldnt work or afford things. Honestly you can buy new at Walmart for very little more than what Goodwill charges now for alot of things. Not sure why this is happenning. Shame. read more

While helping my neighbor purge her daughter's room, we gathered up a ton of clothes that are too small for her now. Dropping them off at goodwill couldn't have been easier. I pulled up and the worker came right over to help me unload the bags. Gave me a tax form and I was on my way. I did go into the store once to shop...the clothes were organized well and I found what I needed quickly. Big, clean, bright,organized and neat, this new Goodwill store means we no longer have to drive to Torrington to drop off donations. Today we donated our first carful of stuff right here. The gent we interacted with at the receiving door was very friendly and polite. He wheeled out a big laundry basket-like contraption to our car to make unloading our donations a snap. He asked if we wanted a receipt for tax purposes, and when we said "yes" he gave us one. We took a look inside, and since its been open less than six months it still looks brand new. Row after row of clothing, household stuff, kitchen stuff and furniture. I saw a big bookcase with music CDs, DVD movies, VHS movies and even some cassette tapes. I picked up two music CDs that were stickered for a buck each. When I got to the counter, I saw that one of them was empty, so I guess you need to be careful. The CD I bought was 50% off, so I bought it for $0.53 and donated the change back to Goodwill. read more

I'm a goodwill hunter. I try to go all over the state to find new places to go. I recently went to this one and it's a new regular for me. It's about 45 minutes away from home, but has the most donated new Travel things that I've seen in one store. If you're not into that, I found the rest of the donated used items to be Ean, well organized and there was room in the aisles for a cart to go down. The smalls were great, tons of glass jars and cool dishes to look through. Will definetly be back for this one to see what's new! read more

I walked in and immediately saw a wonderful looking couch! I set up the plans to be able to transfer it to my house. Someone said be careful buying furniture. I took it with a grain of salt. But thought...maybe I should Inspect it. And in the creases of the couch was all dirt.....AND A DEAD LITTLE WHITE WORM. Yet the couch had a tag that said it was sanitized. Ok, maybe they sprayed the upholstery down, but didn't take the time to vacuum it!!!!! Disgusting! read more

Super friendly, well stocked and clean! I've been to Goodwill's all over the country and this compares with the best of them.

Use to be much better organized and lower prices. Find it hard to find items of a certain size, particularly in the kids department because everything is basically just hung up, without sizing or gender . Considering all items are donated, costs are equal to current consignment shops in the area. There are deals to be found, but pricing is inconsistent. Most employees, however, are very friendly and helpful. The store is clean, but still find a lot of the items cheaper online. These are the reasons for the 3 stars only. Employees mostly get a 5 star from me. read more

In a community like Avon, CT, I was excited to come to this particular location. I guess I had my expectations too high. In terms of clothing, today was not my luck as I saw a lot of cute items, but not in my size. There was a huge sale going on where all sweaters were $5.99 and the red-tagged ones were additionally discounted by 50%. I bought a thick ivory cable knit GAP sweater duster. All infant clothing was 99 cents! There were a mix of newer clothing and really, really old clothing (think 1994 old) and cheap clothing (Wal-Mart) and expensive (J.Crew). In comparison to other locations, this was a newer location with bright lights and fancy cash registers. There were actually associates who looked like they took pride in their jobs. The merchandise can be a hit or miss, but that is the thrift store game. Since I live near the Berlin Turnpike which has Savers, Goodwill, and Salvation Army, I am not going to go out of my way to go there. read more

Just experienced very poor leadership at this location. As I was checking out, the manager on duty yelled at an employee from across the store asking how many people came in and out of the store. He was not sure because he left his position to help another cashier bag as they had a customer with a big load. Once he admitted that he did not know how many people came in, she threatened him by saying that she should slap him. Word of advice: never demean an employee in front of customers and other employees and never threaten harm to an employee. She should be fired. read more

This Goodwill is okay. Well organized and the clothing is mostly sorted by color. With that being said, there's not that great of a selection. Also, many items do not have prices on them! Very frustrating! I had to wait to see what the prices were once I got up to the cashier. I also wasn't very happy with some of the prices, as they were pretty high for a thrift store. I think I'm going to stick to Savers and Uptown Consignment instead. read more

Very organized but it kills me how hard it is to navigate with a cart, especially at the back of the store. There seems to be enough room to spread things out a bit. I can't ditch the cart because I have my toddler in it, and I have to skip sections because I can't get through, even if the store isn't very busy with other customers. Hopefully they see this and consider fixing the issue. I'll definitely be back anyway but would love to be able to move around easily! It's a huge pain. read more

Absolutely the worst customer service ever. They had 2 shirts marked at $ 5.99 each which I was set to purchase along with a cart full of other items. I go thrift ing at various goodwill at least twice a month. The cashier proceeds to tell me they are marked wrong. She gets the manager who tries to shake me down for $2 more a shirt. Floored they would not honor their prices, I've rounded up much more in the past month ,,, I recommend everyone try Bristol, Clinton,Southington goodwill prices and customer service are outstanding,, Avon has gotten greedy their prices are higher than Marshalls or TJ Maxx. This is definitely the cleanest, best-organized Goodwill I have ever visited. I popped in because I'm looking for a specific style cake platter, and was really impressed with how well laid out it was, especially the clothing. I have been in a number of Goodwill stores, and frankly tend to stay away from them these days-- not because I don't like finding a bargain and supporting a good cause, but because the ones I usually visit are often a disaster, and just picking through items and trying to find anything is stressful. Well there was a good run for the year of 2019 in the Avon Goodwill until Oct rolled around - prices, organization , cleanliness managment , workers seemed to gel nicely all year long until Oct ?. I recently returned to find the place in shambles !!! The shelves are a mix of mish mosh . No order in the presentation . Finding broken glass on shelves dirty pots and pans . Even in the shoe dept found shoes with dog poop in the treads on the soles. Theres a big metal container holding paintings and framed pictures jammed with framed posters with broken glass panes . Prices are all over the board no one knows how to price or dicern value . There were really nice managers and workers here now i see a skeleton crew just walkin around doing nothing? Another turnoff are people who come in these stores to thieve price change to lower prices ect. And people with their kids use it like its a playground screaming yelling and breaking things .. nothing said to them = GOODWILL GONE WILD ! This location is more like shopping at Marshalls that GW. The store is really bright and clean and very well organized. Definitely not crammed full/overloaded. Unfortunately the prices were more like Marshalls too. I picked up a mug IDENTICAL to one I had purchased the day before at GW in Rocky Hill for $1 and it was $5!!! I even asked the manager if it was a mistake, which it was not. If you're looking for a real "find" for not alot of money you're probably better off someplace else. However if you just want to shop at a nice clean store with decent merchandise this is your place. read more

I started going to the Goodwill in Westbrook over 10 years ago; there are so many consignment shops along the shoreline that if you buy something that needs a tank top under it, you will surely find one of exactly the right color there. The prices are right, and the clothing is of surprisingly good quality. We've also had a lot of success at the store in Norwich and the one in Groton. I like the one in Newington and the one in Rocky Hill. However, while I'll continue to donate at Avon because it's close to my home, I don't even bother shopping there. I can't figure out how things are sorted, and they seem to sell items for individual prices unlike at the other stores. In short, while I love Goodwill and enjoy the thrill of the hunt, the Avon store is far inferior to any of the others. read more

I just experienced something at Avon, CT Goodwill that is so distasteful. I have been shopping at this location for a while and for every purchase customers are always asked if they would like to round off at the purchase total to support the career center of which I always do to support the cause. I purchased a set of three plastic bowls on last week from the Avon location and wanted another set so this morning I found a second set with a $2 difference. I had the same purchase from last week with the receipt in my car so I asked the manager if I can get the same 3 plastic bowls at the price that I paid on last week and she said "NO". A small request such as this for the same exact item has been done before by other management in the same store so my request was nothing new. In order to keep your customers support we also appreciate customer satisfaction. I had proof of purchase for the same exact item and I walked out of this store feeling as if I committed a crime. My round off amounts is way over the $2 request on this morning but lesson learned. I have over $1000 of donations that I planned on giving to the Avon, CT store since it is the closest to my residence in Simsbury, CT but after having this experience on today my donations will be split between Bloomfield and Enfield. I enjoyed my visit to both locations and the employees and management were very courteous and welcoming. I will never shop in the Avon location again. Enfield and Bloomfield just opened in January and had a nicer selection of items. Enfield is bigger and a whole lot more selections and I highly recommend. They haven't started there 50% off as yet but will in another week or so. Avon needs to get it together! read more
