The program was founded in 2011 by Aura Lynn who went to prison and had a change of heart. She became committed to helping women get out of the revolving door of incarceration in Seminole County. This ministry provides a holistic approach by helping women to get jobs, job training, and education. They also offer bridge housing and a food pantry. It was a pleasure to visit this large and inviting thrift store during a recent visit to Sanford. They had a selection of furniture, household goods, clothes, accessories, jewelry, shoes, small appliances, and children's toys and clothes. There is a boutique section and they also sell discounted items from the Publix bakery. In a backroom they have a treasure trove of items for one dollar. I had so much fun exploring this store and peeking around corners and opening cabinets to discover even more items. Different weekly sales are on the board out front. This is such a wonderful cause to support. If I lived locally this thrift store would be on my weekly rotation.

From a distance the shelves look full, but up close there isn't much that stands out. Kind of a "Mona Lisa effect"--better from afar than up close. That said, the staff was friendly. One woman who worked there--short, wore glasses--was especially kind, though I didn't catch her name. The store is laid out nicely, and they had a lot of furniture available. If you're furniture shopping, this might actually be a good stop; the pieces looked decent and reasonably priced. They also appeared to use a color-tag discount system, though I'm not sure if it changes daily. About half the store was clothing, and the other half was bric-a-brac and furniture. I personally didn't find much this visit, but it could've just been an off day. I'd consider checking back in a couple of weeks to see if inventory changes. I did leave with one fun find: a vintage floating pool drink holder shaped like a rainbow, with space for ice and drinks--super cute and only $5. On the flip side, some prices felt off, like used wrapping paper priced at $3 when you can get a new roll at Dollar Tree for $1. Overall, it's worth checking out, especially for furniture, but don't go in expecting major thrifting treasures. Pretty cool that they are open on a Sunday, though. I will give them that. Margaret Hames Nature Center is located in Turkey Creek Sanctuary in Palm Bay. The nature center…read moreopened in 1992 and was named in honor of Margaret Hames, a conservationist and teacher who was instrumental in developing and preserving Turkey Creek Sanctuary. The nature center is free and staffed by volunteers. It is open seven days a week from 9 AM to 4 PM. The center offers environmental education programs and nature day camps. Inside are displays on fossils, marine shells, Native American Pottery, and artifacts. There is a children's touch and explore table. Several mounted animals were donated to the center. You can get a map of the trails that run through Turkey Creek Sanctuary and purchase t-shirts and cold water and soda for $1 that support the sanctuary. There are also restrooms and welcoming air conditioning after a hot hike. I enjoyed chatting with the friendly volunteer who provided me with a map and tips on the trails. I really appreciate the volunteers who give so generously of their time. If you plan on hiking at Turkey Creek Sanctuary make time to stop in to the nature center where you can get a drink and some great information.
