(former employee) I worked briefly at the Brea location in November 2021. In my cover letter, I stated I was disabled. I began to speak about this during my interview, but was cut off with "I don't need to know about that". After being on my feet for nearly the whole day, I was having issues with pain in my legs due to the disability I TRIED to outline. I'd checked off on my paperwork, "Yes, I can perform the tasks of my job -WITH- or without reasonable accommodation." which was 100% true. When I went to request reasonable accommodations, I was put through the ringer with HR, where I was condescended "Do you know what a part time job is?" Yes, in fact, I do, and your paperwork states "up to 20 hours" so what's the problem? I named and briefly outlined my disability, LOUD AND CLEAR to the HR person on the phone. I then got a call from the head of HR, who put me on medical leave until I could get some paperwork filled out by a doctor, saying they did have stools, but I needed to get that filled out. Funny! CA is a state that REQUIRES employers to provide seating upon request. I couldn't get the paperwork filled out until my healthcare completed an inter-county transfer, and I noted this on the paperwork (as well as a correction where they'd completely disregarded my naming my disability and put "leg pain due to gender transition" when at no point had I even alluded to such). I heard nothing, no confirmation they'd received it, literally zero communication. I, someone who had stated in my interview was "homeless but not houseless" and struggled to find accommodating work, was now without income for about 3-4 months. This could heave been remedied in two seconds by either adjusting my schedule (I was part time, so no minimum hours, just a maximum) or providing a chair upon request without having to do paperwork for it. Why am I writing this now, in March 2022? Because I received a payroll deposit and, thinking I got someone else's paycheck in error, contacted HQ. I was given a call by Payroll and told the money was 100% mine, per my 90 day medical leave (it was 24hrs worth of pay). I spent it on moving costs as this was "surprise money" I really needed after being completely without employment for months over this whole ordeal. Five hours later I got an email from HR saying the money was given to me in error and I owe it back by Friday. Paying it back would put my account in the negative, and render me unable to pay upcoming bills. YOUR mistake, YOUR understaffing, is not MY responsibility. Why was I not provided reasonable accommodations upon request, and as a perfectly mentally capable but physically disabled employee, treated like I wasn't capable of advocating for myself? Why was my cover letter ignored and why was I cut off when volunteering my disability information so that the manager was informed? Why was I told one thing, and then another about this deposit and expected to cover for what was not even remotely my mistake? Why did my medical leave paperwork say something completely different from what I'd stated my disability to be? EDIT: They did correct it and said again that the payment was mine, so that's no issue now, but this was an enormous nightmare and I want no business with this company ever again. read more
