We were looking for a donation alternative to Goodwill for reasons, and the pick up dates weren't an option for us. Asked if I could take some home rather than throw them away and they said no. Really wanted to dumpster dive later. But fast forward like 20 years and here I am again volunteering. This time in their repackage center. This was not like last time when we had to sort through donations. It was all assembly line packaging care boxes. They had a ton of volunteers there from different organizations on a Saturday. We were supposed to have a free breakfast, but there was none. So that kinda sucked. But they have a food court where you can buy stuff. They also have lockers for you to store things in. You are supposed to wear long pants or knee length shorts but I saw lots of folks with shorter shorts. Also closed toe shoes are supposedly required and this means no crocs specifically. but they didn't do inspections or say anything to anyone. Also they didn't ask for the minor waiver forms at check in. I think the warehouse wasn't air conditioned. Just one gigantic ceiling fan where we were so it started getting kind of hot. Lots of kids volunteering. Lots of church groups and schools. I think 6 years and above can volunteer.

Hi Everyone, I've…read morebeen donating food and clothing items to Second Mile Missions for quite a while. They are such a worthwhile non-profit organization. Second mile has an "Opportunity Shop" which resales those clothing donations, producing funds to help the surrounding communities, which are called "neighbors" who are in need. There is also a grocery department where those "neighbors" can shop to help out on their weekly grocery expenses. I have volunteered there on several occasions as time permitted, especially during the recent flooding in the Richmond/ Rosenberg areas that displaced 1,000 families. The need was great and Second Mile, along with other area churches and associations, stepped up to the task of helping out the flood victims in the interim period until they could be made whole again. Second Mile is always in need of volunteers. So if you have some time on your hands and have been looking to volunteer somewhere for a good cause, I cannot think of a better place to make the effort. This organization should be ashamed of their selves! My family is not from Houston but a situation…read morehappened with one of my very close relatives that currently lives there. It took me days to encourage this family member to use her local resources to get some help with a situation that happened to her. She even had a terrible suicidal episode that morning because of her PTSD from what happened to her. She finally took my advice and contacted this organization 24/7 hotline. She was laughed at on the phone and was discouraged from reporting her incident. The night shift "supervisor" scheduled her an appointment with a counselor on November 10th to receive some help. That's 10 days later from the date of the phone call. Is that protocol? Is that how you are taught to assist your community members? I decided to call the hotline to speak with a supervisor, but I was met with the same lady. She refused to even provide her name to me so I can properly report her conduct on the phone. I'm not having to stay up tonight to sooth my relative from her experience and encourage to still report her incident. I hope no one has this experience and I hope this organization is shut down for a lack of knowledge and care for their community members. One word, DISGUSTING.

After my assignment, I was told to bring the car load full of quality donations of children's books and clothing collected from homes in Bellaire (very affluent community in Houston). So I did. Or at least tried to. I walked into the main offices on Waugh and tho I was standing right at the reception window, 18" from some woman sorting mail, I was never acknowledged and it wasn't until another woman came in who was then helped before me, was I told in a dismissively contentious way that only new stuff was accepted. I wasn't asked if my stuff was new, despite 4 full boxes being exactly that, so I took the stuff to The Cottage Shop that serves The Women's Home instead. In addition, my mother tried to partner her non-profit Daughter's of the British Empire with this organization and attempted on 6 different occasions via phone email and letters to offer this group a lump sum cash distribution from their annual fundraisers which would have been over $5,000 but never once received any follow up. As a teacher in Houston ISDvery familiar with the social services offered to my students, I will never again attempt to work with or help this organization for its totally offensive treatment of me and it's disregard of cash donors.
