Absolutely horrible, I brought in 22 books, all worth about 20 dollars individually and I got hear this, two dollars and 93 cents. the service was horrible I am pretty sure they rigged it up so that it was so cheap, all of the books combined with original price costed me well over 200 dollars. do not sell books here, when I went to check again at the books I sold, each book was repriced at 10 dollars when I got not even 3 for 22 read more

Once upon a time, HPB was the place to take your old books, sell them a decent amount of cold hard cash, buy a couple of new old books, read the books and repeat the process. The last few times I have sold books to HPB, I left the transaction section feeling like I needed to take a shower because the employee or algorithm they use left me feeling ripped off. Actually I was ripped off. Let me explain. I brought five boxes of books to sell to the Pearland HPB. At least one of boxes was full of recent hard back best seller. Probably 10 to 15 of them. The other boxes consisted of popular hard back books, popular paperbacks, and several children's hard back picture books. I threw in some classic children's and YA books to beef up the HPB offer. I always play a guessing game with my wife after the transaction, "Guess how much?" I ask her. This time she replied, "$50." "Subtract $30," I told her. "Holy _uck!," was her response. "We are not going there again, we could sell those books for $.50 a piece at a garage sale and make more money. Hell, we probably spent $10 in gas just driving over here!" One other thing do not buy books off of HPB's new or best seller shelf. You can purchase those titles for much less than they are selling them for. Unfortunately, this is yet another business that I dearly loved that has been around awhile, that I will not go to again. If you are looking to save on books while getting a good price for your trade, go to Quarter Priced Books. It is even worth the drive. I kick myself for not going there. SO, this fairy tale of a story did not end with Jack cashing in on the cow for beans trade. In fact, it soiled my admiration for HPB. I truly hope this 50th year of business is their swan song. It is for me. If you want to know the truth, if I could, I would give HPN 1/4 of a star. Just to remind people that Quarter Priced Books exists. read more

If I had the time to post a review on each HPB store I've went to I would. I enjoy HPB, they are so affordable when it comes to books & they have a big variety sometimes I feel like I'm in there for hours at a time (wait I am there for hours at a time). I usually go in there for a self-help book or fitness & I always seem to find more than what I'm looking for. When it comes to books I would definitely recommend this place. read more

I came here to sell my books and I did not expect much for them just because I checked on Amazon first to see if they were available to trade in and all of my books were not eligible for a trade in so Half Price Books here I come! I've never been to this store but I've heard that they have a wide variety of every genre of books and even music. Whenever I walked in I came on a mission to sell my books and boy did I! I did not get much for them but as long as I got something that was more than enough for me. The books I sold were literature books like Homer The Odyssey, Canterbury Tales, Sophocles, and Dante Inferno. Whenever you sell your books you walk in and go to the left side and give the employee your books and then once their done reviewing how much your books are worth they will announce over the intercom your name to come to the stand to get your money receipt then walk to the cashier where they give you your cash! This place deserves a 5/5 stars because of the customer service. They are so friendly here! Everyone said hello and everyone always had a cheerful smile on their face. Usually .50 cents each They have so much stuff. calenders, Cd's, DVDs,records, cookbooks, books(fiction, nonfiction, romance, and even children's books.) My friend's fiance is a teacher and we stopped in here with her to get some supplies for her students. They have a huge discounted classics area. It was like a stroll down memory lane. This place is my mecca. Seriously. I've been coming here since high school. Introvert paradise. I've been trying to get a job at Half Price since high school for the longest time. It never happened. But oh well. There system has improved over the years. before you wouldn't have been able to look up a book. Now they do that for you, and they can find out if other half price stores have your book in stock. But here's a tip. If they only have one copy they might as well have no copies (such is case with any inventory). They use to have free coffee, I haven't seen any store that still does that. They have a good selection of books and I always find the best sellers here for cheap. I wish there was a more consistent area dedicated to sitting and reading. It varies greatly from store to store. I find the people who work there quirky and interesting. They've always been helpful for me. And they usually have a good clearance section. If I had to ding them on anything it would be the buyback section. I remember I brought in a shopping cart full of books, a lot of them being very relevant. You know how much I got for them? $5. Was frikkin' pissed, but at the same time more concerned to get rid of the old and in with the new. That may be why their books are so cheap (because you get so little for them if you try and sell it). I don't really sell my books anymore, as I would like to have a library in my house one day. This will happen dangit. Anywho before you go to any mainstream popular bookstore come here first. And you'll always leave with more books than you intended to buy. The customer service here is great! And, there is a large variety of textbooks, fictional books, board games, and stationaries to choose from. If you desperately need a book and cannot wait for it to come online, this is the place to go. Selling your books to half-price books is a different experience. You have to go into the store expecting to get nothing in return. However, even when you expect nothing, you still may leave disappointed. Think of half price books as a donation box, and you may or may not get $0.25 for your book. read more

Hello i recently sold my books to Half Price Books store i brought at least 24 books ( was not expecting much out of it like at least 10$.) and i went to sell my books and all they gave me was 2.86 that is just no but i accepted the money was not please with the money the have given me yet they were in good condicion some were even new ( brands such as Schoolastic and Bendon) and they really gave me 2.86 i wish they would give more to other people who sell books because 2.86 would not even be enough for gasoline...im very sad and mad i hope you can do better Half Price Books read more

1. I have always loved books. 2. This is place could be termed: "an odd gem." 3. I have found incredible deals here, and enjoy going. 4. If you have role-playing material to trade in, one of the employees likes these items as much as I do, and you'll receive much more of a fair deal than any other Half-Price Books. 5. For some reason, sections of the store seem to change, comparable to a Rorschach test. Although this hasn't occurred while I've been in the store, I have visited and not known where items have been relocated. 6. They sell DVDs, CDs, and even LPs, but sometimes you won't find Star Wars DVDs, nor Cher, Whitney Houston, or Britney Spears CDs. This could mean that either: a. not many people want to trade those in; or b. These are so popular that they sell quicker than the store can keep them in stock. 7. Sometimes the check-out line can be a little long. 8. They have Herbert books, but HERBERT DIDN'T JUST WRITE "DUNE"!!! 9. They usually have boxes of postcards in the clearance section. If you have initials of "M" or "T," as I do, you'll probably find yourself extremely lucky to obtain such at the rate of 18 postcards per dollar, which is a little less than $0.06. Your correspondees will be amazed at your knack for sending them a greeting card! Overall: Recommended. Suggestion for improvement: Management might wish to train more check-out staff, and look into providing a larger selection of Herbert, Star Wars DVDs, and Cher, Whitney Houston, and Britney Spears CDs. read more

I've bought from this store on about 6 or 7 occasions. Out of those visits, only one has been a pleasant experience. This is primarily due to the terrible service of all but one of the employees I've encountered here at this branch. I shrugged off each of these bad experiences, thinking maybe it was a fluke...but I'll share this most recent visit, as I think it will be my last. I walked in to buy a paperback, and I brought a few old first edition hardbacks to sell, not so much for the money as I know half price books are only going to give me pennies, but because I'd rather they go to someone else who can really enjoy these books. From the moment I walked through the door, the guy behind the counter was curt; no "hello", no "how may I help you", just rude responses, to my basic questions about the procedure for selling my books, (This is the first time I brought books to the store). I still have no idea why I was treated in this manner, but I suspect it was because my presence was an interruption and annoyance to his chatting and goofing off with his fellow coworkers. (Do they really need 6-8 kids working in such a small store?) In the end, the guy was too lazy to even look up my books in the computer. I guess the policy here is that if the book doesn't have a bar code, they aren't interested. (This is strange since they have some old first editions in a locked glass cabinet that they sell for outrageous prices.) The kid tells me he can't offer me anything. This was hard to believe for some first edition Steinbecks. He then asked if I wanted to donate them. If I hadn't been treated so rudely, I actually would have contemplated donating these since they are just collecting dust on my bookshelf. Even though I did find the paperback I was looking to buy at this store, I ended up going across the freeway to Barnes & Noble to buy it instead. All I can say is: customer service can go a long way. I paid 2 to 3 bucks more, but the book was new and the employees at B&N have some common courtesy. read more

Great store! The employees are kind and pretty knowledgeable & I love the cheap reads... One thing I have to mention is they used to be equally good w/ their cd section, but last time I came here I noticed a lot of their cds have been what they call 'resurfaced.' this means the CD looks like they held it up to a lathe for a few mins. No bueno. I had about 60 cds to turn in that day & they said they'd only pay for about 10 of them, they'd have to 'resurface' about 20 & they wouldn't take the rest. The ones they wouldn't take had a few hairline scratches on them (no exaggeration - I'm super picky about my cds, so I have to desperately want it to buy a scratched-up one). I had never had a problem buying & selling here b4, or at any other 1/2 price, so I took my cds back, went to humble & got $175 for them. I will still come here for books, because each 1/2 price has a different selection & I have unique & eclectic tastes. But... I won't be visiting their music section. It's a shame, too, because I've found a lot of rare items here over the years. read more

In the past I have ordered books, dvds, etc if they had it available at another location and it comes directly to the store. The location is in a great shopping center. I find myself more interested in the toys and used dvds than just books. During the holidays this is my favorite place to get my stocking suffers. read more

Brought my friend to this Half Price Books establishment for his first Half Price Books experience. A few hours later, he'd purchased over $200 in comic books and was struggling to fit them into his suitcase for his flight back to California. I took 4 big boxes of like new that we bought over the years for a little over $1000.00 the lady wanted to give me only%75.00 for them ! Some of the books were new not opened yet the price on them was like $20.00 to $50.00 I negotiate with her all she gave me was $80.00 so I took it ,but I don't think that was fair. read more
