There are two Goodwill retail stores in Arlington Heights, IL, and this was the first one my wife and I hit. She found a lot of things that she liked, and ended up using the nice dressing rooms in the back to choose the clothes that she wanted to buy. She also noted the large selection of backpacks for me (I passed), but did end up buying a nice Gucci-like hobo bag for under twenty dollars. The checkout lanes are well organized with one queue feeding a bank of registers. This is also where a few shelves of books are stored, and Mystery 1/2 dozen deals where you buy the bag knowing how many of a certain clothing item are in it, but not the actual style. The Goodwill located at 1551 N. Dryden in Arlington Heights Illinois could better serve their local community by informing customers that they need to test electronic equipment in the store. I bought two items that did not work when I got them home. When I brought them back the store manager (a gentleman with a British accent) told me he could not give me a refund. He said they don't even test the equipment to see if it works before selling it to customers. I asked if I could exchange the merchandise and he refused. It was my first time shopping at this store and I was very disappointed that Goodwill was so unscrupulous a retail organization. Their name and mission imply that they actually care about their customers. Well, apparently not at the Goodwill store in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Standard good will store with a wide variety of items available at very good prices. There is plenty of parking available and the traffic flow isn't too confusing through the lot, though it can be a bit difficult to turn back onto the main streets around busy rush hour times. The goods are arranged logically here, and there's a lot of items to sort through with the average quality of selection. Checkout is fast and efficient. read more

This was my first visit here, I only dropped off donations for this visit. I was a little confused where the donations were supposed to be because it was right next to the store entrance. Once I found it, the store associate was by my car before I even stepped out of the car, which was nice. I look forward to coming again another day to shop. read more

I no longer go to Greedwill. For a store that gets everything donated, their prices have gotten insane. You can drive two minutes down the road and often pay the same price or even less for a brand new item at Target. I just don't even bother to shop there anymore. read more

Very few childrens items and not much to chose from in any other department. My least fav store but you can find some cute stuff once in a while. Despite of people complaining about the selection the parking lot is always full. I found adorable overalls for my little one one time so i gave it an extra star. I absolutely love this store, my problem is a customer that shops there is way to rude and aggressive. When the carts come up she's super aggressive and pushy. I've never seen anything like it. I was with my aunt, and my aunt went to reach for a tiny ornament and this customer literally yanked it out her hand. Absolutely ridiculous and I felt terrible, is this acceptable behavior to act like animals??? Help me please...I need recovery from sticker shock. I used to be an Assistant Manager many years ago so I know how things used to work. People DONATED items for FREE and things were priced reasonably for the public to purchase to support the Goodwill program. Something is different...the prices are ridiculously high and now Goodwill has hired people to pull the valuable items and put on their own auction site to suck out as much as possible from the DONATED item. In the days of yore, a baseball type cap would cost .99 to purchase. Actually, depending on which Goodwill you go to, you still can. But this one? $4.99 for a DONATED/USED cap. Most all clothes are unbelievably priced. Lamps without shades $19.99 and more. The kicker? I picked up a comic book with a price tag $1.00 more than the price of the comic and it wasn't even a collectible. To make matters worse the dingbats put the price tag right in the middle of the cover. Fortunately I know how to remove tags from paper covers without ripping the paper. It's just plain disgusting. Saliva Army is getting to be just as bad. What caused a lot of this? Corporate Greed and the Goofballs that put up Youtube videos of their great finds. Do you realize those Goofballs are making money each time you watch their video? So who are the losers? US. The other thing that gets the hairs on my neck to stand are when these multi-million dollar profit conglomerates have the gall to ask if we want to 'round up' our purchase price. Even old McDonald's is doing it now. So, I ask, "How about rounding the price down?" They can't do that. Oh well, Se La Fare. Until next time...I'm avoiding this Greedwill. read more

This place is great! Found a few great books; one of which is all "street food" recipes. I appreciate that the books are all grouped together by category and not just thrown all together. A few stragglers here and there, but a very nice book selection and some interesting titles. It's a pretty good size store with lots of everything. They had a lot of really cute gently used brand name shoes. Talbots sling backs etc. There was no way I was trying them on without dousing some clorox on before hand, so I had to pass. Found a really cute bag, practically brand new. The real find was J finding an old school Vision Streetwear shirt which will go in the garage hanging next to the Kobra Kai shirt. Goodwill is a great store. We came here to drop off some items we no longer use figuring one mans junk is another mans treasure. Someone can use it so why not recycle it? Like any second hand store you need to wade through a lot of junk to find some treasures. I come to Goodwill mainly to find paperback books for $0.89. Once in awhile I will look for clothes. Once I found a Ralph Lauren navy blue blazer for $5. Another time I found a beautiful gray Ralph Lauren suit for $20 (no alterations needed). I saw the exact same suit at the former Marshall Fields @ Water Tower for $960.00 (without tax or alterations) Most of the stuff you probably wouldn't want, but who knows you can find some great deals from time to time if you have the patience and willingness to sort, sort, sort. I suppose I should write a review for this Goodwill location since I frequent it all the time. As a teacher, I come here to find goodies for my classroom all the time. I usually find steals! Last week, I got two of those carpets with the city layout and streets for only $8 for both! These are really expensive to buy new and they were in good condition. My students love playing with the matchbox cars on it now! I also buy a ton of children's books here. My students tend to color on everything or try to eat it, so at 50 cents a book I am not that upset if it gets ruined. The same goes for stuffed animals. I have found some super cool ones for 50 cents here as well that my students love to snuggle up with! This location is always very clean and the service is top notch! I come back a lot because obviously the merchandise is constantly changing. One of my tricks is I look in the bin of stuff that they are bringing out before they even shelve it. I just wish they gave teacher discounts. They give senior discounts and student discounts though! read more

I read that someone's boyfriend said this is his favorite store , and no Algonquin, and I have to agree with him. This store always has a great eclectic assortment of many items and when I need for repurposing this is my go to store. Today , picked up an awesome chair, and the other day I found a great set of belts used for making a hanging basket. This store is also my go to when I when I clean out my closet twice a year and storage once a year. The prices are ridiculous underpriced for used product. I really do like this Goodwill location. Easily on my 'Top 3' list. Pros: This store is always busy. I definitely recommend shopping on a weekday rather than a Saturday or Sunday. Wider aisles. Store is always well staffed and I've never had to wait too terribly long in line. They have a rewards program. Cons: Some of the items don't move very quickly out of the store. I was here two weeks ago and picked up a vase. I noticed the vase again today in the exact same spot I set it down in 2 weeks ago. Clearly there isn't a lot a tidying that goes one. Clothing racks were extremely crammed today. I couldn't look at anything. Boo. The 'cons' wont stop be from coming back, but improving organization in the housewares department would be great for the customers. read more

The parking lot here is super congested if you're looking to do a drop-off. Once I went inside to the drop-off area, no one was there for a while. Eventually, someone popped up to take my things, but I was standing there long enough to wonder if this was a self-service kind of thing. I recommend going to the Wilmette drop-off spot instead. read more

This is a good place to come if you get an apartment and need some dishes. It's also good for kid's clothes,or if you want an inexpensive book, VHS/DVD movie or vinyl records. The adult clothes aren't bad either for casual kick around stuff. The prices are very low. read more

It is an overall good store but the aisles are small and they are always blocked with junk. The shelves are always messy too. Today there was a piano on the sales floor and I began playing it. Not pounding on the keyboard or trying to break it. But soon after I finished playing, the manager man came over and told me that I better stop playing or he would ask to leave the store. And get this!! It wasn't a $10,000 Steinway. It was a old beat up out of tune Baldwin that they wanted only $6.99 for! This store has got to shape up its management now!!! read more

I love Midwest Goodwill stores for their $1 soft covers. It's teacher heaven. This location has a sub-par selection of books, and has marked up "amazon books" to $3. WTF is an Amazon book? I walked here in ninety degree heat, and I'm super annoyed. read more

I am upgrading my review to 4 stars. The store took my review seriously and posted the policy about returns in several places where customers can clearly see the signs. I have not stopped shopping at this location, but definitely make sure you check the items over carefully before buying them. Think about that expensive purchase before buying it in case there is a problem later. The clerks have remained friendly and helpful even when they are very busy. Please keep up the good work. I left off one star, because the constant asking to round up on the purchase price is annoying and unnecessary. I donate often and I also purchase from several locations weekly. I am sure Goodwill can afford their own training program without begging for extra change from your customers (this comment is directed at corporate) I know it's not the stores, but corporate making them ask. read more

Ya'll bypass this store. There are WAY better locations than this one, and here's why. 1. The clothing racks are PACKED, which sounds like a good thing, but when you can't comfortably sift through the items, it's frustrating to even try. There is no space. 2. The clothes are not properly categorized. For example, if you're looking for t-shirts, you have to look through the "short-sleeve" shirt section, which includes ALL type of tops; blouses, vests, tank tops, crop tops, jackets, tunics, etc. 3. Even if you do find something, good luck trying it on! I was here a long time ago way before COVID and there's no staff around to unlock the fitting rooms. That time, I stood in line at the back of the store and CALLED the store so they would send someone back there to unlock the doors. There are other locations in the area...go to one of those instead. This one will only frustrate you. read more

I'll come to this location if I'm really bored, but the fact is that this location tends to be one of my least favorites in the area. The staff don't know how to price things. A year or two ago they went through a phase where every "nicer" brand of jeans was priced at $25+. Eventually they came to their senses and lowered the prices to be more reasonable. You're not going to find "hidden treasures" here. They have designer/higher end items priced from $60-300. Truly unbelievable when they're getting the items for free and almost all local thrift stores have way better pricing. read more

A few months ago I went on a second-hand shop tour of the Northwest suburbs in search of treasures with my boo. He loves Goodwill. He loves it so much that when we first started dating I asked him what his favorite store was (though he generally despises shopping) and he said the good Goodwill in Arlington Heights (NOT the newer one on Algonquin, just to clarify), and that he likes to treat himself to trips their after work on nice days. You'd think he was hipster of some sort from his answer, but in actuality he's really more of a nerdy (but cute) type with the fashion stylings of my Dad. He owns two pairs of jeans, they're both exactly the same except one of which still has the tags on (despite being nearly 3 years old) that he's saving in case something ever happens to his first pair. They're the only type of jeans he can wear because they have an extra crotch piece sewn in so he has more range of motion, as being able to do sick roundhouse kicks is a really big concern when it comes to his fashion choices. I'm not knocking it, I'm just trying to illustrate that he's a man of discerning tastes and a man who made it a point to show me that no two Goodwill stores are equal and this one is top of the line. I grew up in an area that's a bit more economically challenged than Arlington Heights and our Goodwill wasn't well-lit, generally dirty, nothing was in order, everything had stains and was worn to a stiffness that when brushed across your skin would take your skin clean off, there'd be garbage on the floor and it wasn't uncommon to see a used baby diaper bundled up and discarded in both the parking lot and in the store. Where I come from, they didn't have cute items like the inspirational kitten framed poster I added an image of or the Target back-stock bins that feature majorly discounted Target items with tags still on, straight from the store. My hometown Goodwill wasn't for hipsters or people looking for Halloween costumes, it was full of people who had no other choice but to be there, buying used and mismatched baby socks and items that the average middle class person probably would not look to Goodwill to shop shop for. and that store did those people, who so badly needed their goods to survive, a great disservice with it's disarray and disorder. While my hometown Goodwill served a purpose in a community that very much needed the items they offered, they did those people who so badly needed their goods to survive a great disservice with it's disarray and disorder. Having a Goodwill that's the caliber of the Arlington Heights Goodwill would have helped benefit the community so much more. AH's GW is spotless- more so than regular retail stores, organizing to an obsessive-compulsive T, well lit and carries enough stock so that you could outfit yourself for a job interview, for your child for their first day of school, you can find men's dress shirts and name-brand as well as designer label goods that with a little styling could take a person to the next level professionally. They've got great size and style selections for men, women and children and their homewares/kitsch section is on point. You can get some nice furniture, serving platters and even Ikea furnishings that are in perfect condition and already assembled for a fraction of a fraction of the retail cost. So while Goodwill still isn't my favorite store in the world, I will say that this location is above and beyond any of the Goodwills I've ever experienced in the past. read more

Well, thank you Goodwill for pushing me to shop at other thrift stores. I only shopped at Goodwill because I buy things for friends and family. If it ends up not working for them I could always return it for store credit. Now that they will not be taking returns, that leaves me to use other thrift stores. I found really great stuff here but am taking off a star because records are not returnable. That really is unfortunate because sometimes you can't tell if a record will work or not until you try it and there is no way of trying them at the store. Anyway, I found a great selection of electronics, records, and houseware. It was very well organized and clean, even though it was a bit dusty. There is a large parking lot. Unfortunately, Goodwill has gotten pricey over the years. My friend and I still visit despite the lack of dough in our pockets. I have purchased some awesome finds here, but they have all been electronics or miscellaneous items. Having the racks of items appear well organized at this location has helped the browsing process. The clothing selection lacks here, especially the men's section. My friend has found a few gems in the clothing, but everyone looking will not be as lucky. Finally, a Goodwill store in this area that has marked their shoes all the same price! These shoes are donated and should not be marked more than 4.99, it is time for Goodwill to stop the nonsense of marking up donations on all of their items --especially the ones from Target. This is supposedly a charity and I think they've lost sight of that. Profits have to be at an all time high when you're marking Dollar Tree items to 2.99, pretty sad. But this location seems to have recognized that you can't put a 14.99 tag on a dirty, tired Nike's with the sole worn down smooth. Pretty clean store. They seem to have a good variety of items, though I have yet to purchase anything for my own use here. I did go here to pick up some gently used shoes that a group of us were collecting to give to children in Mexico. Found a huge variety and decent quality - most pairs were $2-$4 each. read more
