I like Stewart forest for both walking and GeoCaching as there are A LOT of caches in this forest…read more A word of caution I will say please be sure to check postings at parking lot if you visit during winter months because while the property is not chained/closed the forest is closed certain times of year in the winter for hunting. While you might find people still walking into the forest during hunting season they do so at their own risk. Hunters do sit out there at appropriate (legal) times of the year waiting for their prey. I warn because I didn't realize this and had a hunter warn me sternly that I was unintentionally putting myself at risk when the forest was off limits to hiking, walking & biking. The hunting warning aside the forest really is massive in size but I wouldn't call it difficult at all to walk. I could say it's a great beginner hiking spot since the elevation gain throughout the forest is well below 1K. I've hit some decent points but nothing like hiking an actual mountain. The forest I believe has something like over 20 miles of trails for foot, hiking and even horse back riding traffic. Some portions are swampy areas so be cautious where you step if you venture off the beaten path. If anyone is deeply into nature despite great views, this is the place to come to. There is not a…read morelot of parking space, but from what I've seen, it doesn't seem to fill up. A map is provided just as you enter, followed by a gravel path going uphill. There is no public access for vehicles on this part. Along the way, you'll see letters indicating trails. These trails end up doing a loop, eventually meeting up with the gravel. The trails provide arrows on trees to follow the path, and it's marked clearly. At the end of the uphill on the gravel, there is additional space assuming for park employees to park or if it gets packed. Continuing, the gravel turns into a grassy trail, splitting to the left and right. Both of those end up going toward 9D into private property. On the left split, there is a bridge that crosses a stream that leads to Wappingers Creek. The only highlights I enjoyed were that and the trail that parallels the stream. On the right split, there's not too much to take in except paralleling the stream on the upper side. Two suggestions I do wish is to update signatures regarding trail letters (some were messing) and provide the letter along the way. Taking a photo of the map is key to make the trip enjoyable.

The majority of the park includes multiple trails, including an Observation Tower, highlighting the wonderful view across the Hudson River, including south and north. The trees are in a way that limits a great view looking west. I enjoyed the view, and it was well worth it. The driveway I took is one lane, so do take caution while driving and pass carefully when necessary. Cronomer is on my checklist.

I picked this trail out a while back, which in fact is part of the Wappingers Greenway Trail. This…read moretrail has four trailheads, considering it's a long trail that covers 2.73 miles. Only two trailheads provide parking while the other two don't. Along the way, there's plenty to take in, specifically the beautiful scenery paralleling Wappinger Creek and the view looking south toward the Hudson River. Some places are a bit steep and the edges are narrow as well - proceed with caution. We personally enjoyed our walk, and highly recommend it. The only issue that needs to be fixed is the bridge, located near the Market Street trailhead.

We parked at the lot off of Clover Rd. I warn you it's super small and people seem to get a little creative with parking spots as the day goes on. I would recommend a morning hike or later in the afternoon in order to find a spot. You can't park anywhere on Clover or will risk getting a ticket! The white trail is located just down the road from the parking lot. There is a sign with the trail map so I recommend snapping a picture is printing a copy from home, there weren't any available when we arrived. The trails are moderately well marked. When in doubt you can usually tell you are going the right way from the walked on path, there is a lot of brush around you that will make it clear if you've gone off the path. We walked up the white and started part of the orange trail to get to the top views and ended up back down the same way given the time. It was about 6 miles and 3 hours. Keep in mind there is no restrooms or information center so be prepared! Happy hiking!

A boy scout troop dedicated a path that you can hike as soon as you park your car, or you can take the path down to the end and than loop around through the woods. All in all, it's really not a big park, but on a nice day when you want to get yourself and dog out for a bit of exercise, this is perfect!
