Administration is terrible (the current principal specifically) and they do not communicate well with parents. As soon as a parent speaks up about a concern you are flagged and they will begin trying to get you out. They are not upfront about behaviors of kids and will wait to discuss behavior until it's too late. If you are looking for a private school, do not attend this one. Update: My kiddo has started attending a different private school for over a month now, and it is clear to us that Portland Adventist Elementary was the problem. Our child has not demonstrated any of the behaviors they claimed he was demonstrating despite the school telling us "he will do this in any setting." Thankfully we got out before any big permanent labels could be placed on our child, although this school attempted to ruin our chances at having a clean slate in a new environment. My advice, if you're a current parent that has concerns, pull your child. And future parents, there are other private institutions in the area with more integrity than this one (including other Adventist schools).

We have complained and even coached him to ignore the name-calling, racism, and harassment. After today's incident, we are filing a police report. #1 Most recent incident occurred 10/30/19 3:00-3:20pm (Bus drop off home) We called at 530pm and left a message on the school line. He had an incident with the Caucasian woman, bus monitor on his ride home from school. He is a self-manager, which grants him the duty of being a bus monitor. According to what I was told is as followed: My son stated that he was doing his normal bus duties to make sure the kindergartens were seated. This lady grabbed his armed and told him to sit down and she was going to put him to the front of the bus. He pulled away and explained that he was making sure the little kids were in their seats. Upon exiting the bus she made a comment "Black kids these days" #2 1 week ago he was pushed into the mud by a kid that was bullying him. #3 - School has a record of this 4 weeks ago he was hit on the head (Kid slammed the door) in his face and he fell to the ground. An incident report was filed, I was contacted by the nurse. However, this child was upset because my son was chosen to be self-manager by the teacher. #4 - School has a record of this In the Spring (I believe it was April/May), he threatened to have his throat slit by another child. The school filed a police report but I did not press charges at that time. #5 Almost daily he was bullied and called racism & homophobic names on and offsite school premises. It occurred so often we honestly stop keeping track because we had no physical proof, as parents we could only provide him emotional support. We are requesting the policy and process necessary to escalate this matter of safety and concern. We are requesting the school district investigates the West Gresham school of racism and safety for my African-American child, as if they do not want him there then the district needs to transfer him to a school that is more diverse in educating diverse children.

When I picked our son up from his shadow day at FMES, he said it was the best day of his life. Within a week he was more joyful than he'd ever been at our neighborhood school. Three years later, he has some of the sweetest friends and is the happiest I've ever seen him. This past weekend (end of spring break) he said he was missing school because he is really enjoying math. Our younger son has ADHD and is also thriving. The options and flexibility really work well for him. FMES feels different from the moment you walk through the door. It's a very warm and welcoming community. Having taught special education in public schools for twelves years it was tough for us to make the decision to switch but we could not be happier. The love and care our children receive at FMES protects their innocence and joy, giving them a wonderful childhood.

I'm not a fan of all Montessori pedagogy, but they have such a wonderful blend of taking the best parts, and being flexible where it's not working. The leadership was incredibly thoughtful, patient, and communicative in dealing with the pandemic. I felt respected, heard, and most importantly, that our kid's safety AND education were being put at the forefront. Lastly, the environment is open to all sorts of people. The religious components are opt-in. We were literally in tears of joy after the tour, feeling that we had found a match for our family. Four years later, we couldn't be happier, and now have FOUR kids enrolled. That shows how happy we are!
