We don't talk about Alvin, TX enough so let me shed some light on this great place. I've had Gordon Street Tavern on my list for awhile for the simple fact that they sell scotch eggs. You just don't see that often and I wanted to try it. The stars aligned and my family and I met up here for a weeknight dinner. Alvin is the true definition of a small town. It is just south of Pearland and life moves a little slower out here. Atleast for time being as it is becoming more developed now. The building itself is old and full of character. Everyone seemed to know each other. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, but service was a tad bit slow at times. My family isn't a big drinking family so we stuck with water and sodas, but they have quite a nice bar program here. They have a really impressive beer selection, a long list of specialty cocktails and lots of wine to choose from. I'm definitely coming back to check that out without the fam. For appetizers, we got an order of the scotch eggs and the Bavarian pretzel sticks. This was my first introduction to scotch eggs and a wonderful one at that. You really can't go wrong with anything wrapped in sausage and deep friend. It was a nice treat and something I will not be sharing next time. The pretzels were also very good. Our waitress suggested some cheese sauce to accompany those. These sticks of goodness were excellent. For my entree, I was stuck on a few items as their menu is pretty extensive. Our waitress said my option for the Pork Milanesa was the way to go, so I did. I've had milanesa at Mexican restaurants, but never in a tavern nor prepared this way. This was hand battered in panko and then topped with a mushroom gravy. It comes with broccoli and mashed potatoes but I substituted the veggie for mac and cheese. This dish was very good and the portions were very generous. Enough for me to have a full second meal minus the sides. The pork was thinly pounded and kept it's crunch even doused in gravy. The gravy was rich and very delicious. My family got a mix of items like the philly cheese steak, flat iron steak salad, tavern salad, and chicken fried steak. For research purposes and for my loyal readers, I tried everything. There wasn't anything that was bad to me. We were full so desserts didn't happen on this trip. We ordered the Tavern Trio, Fried Green Tomatoes, Baja chicken sandwich, and tomato basil soup (soup of the season) We enjoyed everything except the soup. I could swear it was just marinara pizza sauce that looked like thick tomato paste in a cup with strange white foam with something green drizzled on top. We live about 30 minutes away. Both times the service was terrible. We waited a long time to get a drink. We ordered two appetizers. Then ordered food. 30 minutes later I had to ask about the appetizers. In 5 minutes they dropped the appetizers off at our table. Queso was kinda cold. 5 minutes after that they brought our meal. We didn't have time to eat enjoy the appetizer. We told them that was not acceptable. They said we are sorry we are busy. Each time I looked the staff was just standing around the bar area. Cheese had a nice pull...IYKYK! Sauce served hot...very tasty. Club sandwich was good, very basic sandwich. Kids Mac and cheese was super yummy...and we have a picky kiddo. Probably the best food and ambiance in all of Alvin. They have a huge menu with everything you can think of. I was starving when I came here and there was so much to choose from, I couldn't decide! I ended up getting blue chicken sandwich and I did not regret it! This chicken sandwich came with bacon, chicken, mushrooms, onions, and a blue cheese spread that was delicious! It was massive! I ended up taking half of it to go an eating it for dinner the next day. Service was fast on Sunday during lunch hours and also very attentive. We ended up ordering a couple of drinks as well. I had the sangria margarita and was not a fan... They do have a pretty extensive list of cocktails so I am sure I could find something that I like better next time. I had the white sauce Alabama wings or whatever and they were amazing even without the wing sauce. GST has a fabulous kind of eclectic menu! We were in the area and looking for a great place to have a late lunch. Using Yelp of course, we found this spot. Very big patio area on the way in. We did have a child with us so confirmed it was child friendly, the friendly staff member that greeted us said, well of course! First impression is rustic, sports on the TV's people whooping and hollering for their teams! Service was spot on! We tried several appetizers, but truly one of the main reasons I chose this place was "scotch eggs" and crispy polenta on the menu! We ordered the pretzels, and the goat cheese dip appetizer as well. All of these things were delicious! Who knew about these pretzels!!!! The scotch egg even my 5 year old niece said it was delicious! We absolutely love meeting friends here from Houston since we live in Galveston. The atmosphere, service and food are top notch and the menu is unique pub foods with a European flair. They have a covered patio and LOTS of beers on tap, plus a full bar with fun and sometimes crazy options that I love.
