**July 2026: Sunday Afternoon Visit**…read more During my SDCC weekend, I walked by Michaela's Meals in the Gaslamp Quarter, which was right between my hotel and the convention center. This shop was just one street down from Ralphs and Vitality Tap so it was conveniently located. On Sunday afternoon, I noticed the space was open for business, so I popped in to check it out. It's a small spot with a staff member, a fridge full of pre-made meals, a little bar area with two stools, a cold water pitcher, and a microwave. The main business model is a weekly subscription, but I learned that the owner also keeps leftovers in the fridge for grab-and-go customers on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1:30-5 p.m. They also run a "buy 4 get 1 free" and "buy 8 get 2 free" promotion, which makes the meals an even better value. I assumed she makes an abundance and sells those for $10 a meal, but since I stopped by close to closing, I got mine for $5 each. I grabbed two to try because the meals looked very nutrition-focused and considering I ate basically garbage throughout Comic Con it was a smart choice to fuel up with real food. I tried a Mediterranean chicken over yellow rice and zucchini, as well as a ground hamburger-style sloppy joe-type meal. The food definitely leans healthy, and considering how inconvenient it is to eat well at SDCC, this was a great find. Since she has Wednesday and Sunday pickups, I'm now contemplating doing a preview-night (Wednesday) pickup for a couple of meals on my next visit. I'll be in touch with Michaela's for future San Diego trips.

There are so many good things to say about this service that it is hard to know where to start…read more First, while the promise is for one service - meal service, in actuality, there are two products that are being delivered. The first, food service, is the tangible product. A second and equally important, but intangible, product is delivered alongside the tangible. Gloria and Frank are amazing people. They are warm, funny, inclusive, smart, gentle, interesting, and interested. These qualities create the intangible product of great value. While the food is being prepared we talk about many things, old, new, curious, hilarious, compelling, thought-provoking, and practical. If laughter is medicine for the soul, when they leave for the day, my soul is fully medicated! LOL! On the tangible side are great meals. Having a trained chef makes such an important difference. Consider, for example, the shopping. The chef makes it easy to feast on high-quality fresh vegetables and meats because a trained chef selects the best quality and develops relationships with the managers of the produce and meat departments so that they offer him the best of what is available. It is a good thing. They leave an ample supply of delicious foods to consume on demand. Without sharing too much about my particular dietary constraints, I will say that they cook around corners to accommodate the beast that is my stomach, and they calm and sooth that beast! You will get 2, 2, 2, services in 1!

Plus, they're local and use local farmers. So, that's a plus. 1 minor thing is just I wish I could select what meals I wanted in my subscription instead of chef's choice, because I personally just WISH I could order some meals more than once because of how delicious they were.

However I was very disappointed with these meals. First off, they have a form you fill out and it shows you all of the meals. Looking at the photos, I was excited to try the food. But before I even got to seeing my meals, the wrong meals were delivered to me. I had to call the support and they assured me that the driver would come back and swap them out, a bad start to my experience. Following that, when I finally got the food I was very disappointed. The food looks nothing like the photos, and not only that but it is extremely bland, but not only that, all of the lean protein I ordered was extremely dry, as once I reheated it it seemed like it was cooked too much. To give them the credit though, the pork wasn't dry, however that's not saying much given its easy to keep that from being dry. I've tried multiple competitors in regards to meal prep and this is the most expensive meal prep company I've ever tried, but it's considerably worse than the others in San Diego.

They have quite the diverse selection- featuring 20 virtual restaurant brands! Among them is Theo's Smash Burgers! We ordered a few of their original bacon smash burgers 9/10. And (2) orders of their tater tots 10/10. The tots were shatteringly crispy on the outside with a soft, fluffy interior. Packed with flavor! The burger was well seasoned with an intensely caramelized, dark brown crust- chef's kiss! Prices were reasonable. The vibe was laid back. They have an outdoor patio for people to dine in and enjoy their food. I didn't really know what to expect from a "ghost kitchen". Surprisingly, I was impressed! The concept is made simple and easy!
