As a middle-age working mother, I am in the midst of several life transitions - country of residence, starting a new career and becoming the mother of an empty-nest. These changes have created the possibility for me to improve other aspects of my life -- such as poor back posture (aka ... ) that I inherited, has grown worse with age and led to my father's death. Now, that's motivation to improve my spine!
After working with the team at Got Your Back (GYB) led by Dr. Justin Klein for the past eight months, I have found their services to be of tremendous value and have also thoroughly enjoyed working with them. I highly recommend them.
GYB's strengths:
- Holistic methodology at the intersection of chiropractic, physical therapy, massage and nutrition - read more online (...) - that combines MRIs to see precisely the areas of weakness and tracks improvement in the spinal column, chiropratic methods with support of hands and tools to adjust the spine's misalignments, and a particular system of physical therapy that strengthens and realigns the spine. After months of working with this methodology, I can understand the value of all components of this design and how one part without the other would be less effective in achieving sustained results. The GYB team is currently adding other components into their holistic system, such as massage therapy and nutritional services. Regarding nutrition, apparently the enzymes in fresh fruits and vegetables help to break down and work against the build up of calcium deposits (arthritis) in the spinal column. As the spine is the channel to the body's nerves, muscles and organs, the health of the spine significantly affects the rest of the body. Their methodology relies on the wisdom that 10-15 minutes of practice a day leads to life-long improvements to the spine. I am finding this wisdom to be true and their methodology to be effective.
- Complementary, multi-disciplinary years of training and experience by the two principals - Justin Klein (medical title) and Colin __ (PT title). Read more online... They draw upon and combine a range of formal training, learning and medical and physical therapy methodologies.
- Design of simple, 10-15 min. repeatable routines that enable consistent self-practice -- the key to long-term, sustained improvements
- Whole team of professionals that work as a harmonious orchestra under Dr. Klein's leadership
Results I am achieving:
As a result of visiting their office twice a week for about eight months, daily home practice and complementing this with other physical training, I am achieving results on several levels:
- Significantly more functional and aligned spine from neck to hips
- Corrected misalignment in my neck by __ degrees
- Improved overall alignment of my spine by __ degrees
- Early stage corrections in the improper rotation of my spine, causing misalignment across my whole body from right to left
- Working on improving an age-old left shoulder rotor cuff injury, by massage and strengthening the overall muscular area
- Motivation and habit to easily repeat 10 min. routines daily (and ideally 3x a day) no matter where I am
While I have invested in physical fitness throughout my life, I always thought my poor back posture was related to simply not standing up straight. Though I tried to be disciplined in my standing posture, yoga and physical fitness, I only learned in my 50's that these techniques were not addressing my inherited curvature of the spine (also known as ___), though probably keeping it from being much worse. Moreover, I realized a few years ago that my father's death as a healthy man of 85 was brought on by his increasingly curved spine and the build-up of calcium deposits in his spinal column which caused him to lose mobility of his legs and led to his collapse.
Thus, upon moving home to the US in 2017 after 15 years in working and raising my family in China; I had the time and access to do a full battery of health exams. One of these included an MRI of my spine, as requested by Dr. Klein as a first step in working with GYB. This scan showed that I, too, am building up calcium deposits on my spine, just as my occurred for my father. After a lifetime of being a slightly hunched-over woman that detracts from my presence, and this naturally getting worse after decades of working at desks and being a mother carrying babies etc which caused more sway to my back; the final clincher was connecting the findings of the MRI scan of my spine in 2017 with what I knew about my father's death in 2013.
Thus, no time like the present to make changes so that I might stand up straighter from now until my final days, work against calcium building up in my spine by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and enhance my entire physical and mental well being.
