Decent burgers at inflated prices. The burgers were delicious, the truffle cheese fries were definitely not worth it, the staff was generally... Ok? Burgers, five stars. Got a couple different ones with my wife and they were perfectly cooked to order and absolutely delicious! Truffle fries. Meh, fries with melted cheese. Nothing special. Staff? Mixed bag. The lady who sat us talked so quietly, we couldn't hear or understand what she said. Heard someone else seat another table so we understood that we had to order up front. And we had to do so quickly as it was almost the end of happy hour! Went up front to order and our first employee didn't know about buy one, get one free beers. Second employee came over and explained it and showed her how to do it, but the computer system wasn't having it. They did manage to comp a beer for us. Then we stopped a second girl to ask her where to buy an umbrella or rain slicker nearby. Her response was so... off, we assumed she didn't speak English. A couple minutes later she did come over to us and explain where we could go shop. I had the most funny lunch ever at GBK in Waterloo today. After responding to a Facebook post for volunteers, I was invited to go to the Waterloo branch for a free lunch with a friend and enjoy Burger 'The Opera' The restaurant is just opposite Waterloo station so really handy to get to. Nice decor, scrabble tiles for the toilet signs, all very funky and quirky. We were there to try the new 15 minute lunch menu. It costs £5.95 for a 4oz burger (beef, chicken or veggie on offer) and a side (fries, salad or coleslaw). They threw in a free drink for us too. We asked to pay the £1.50 each for the upgrade to 6oz burgers and they let us do so for free which was nice. The burgers were nice and rare, the chips a good sized portion. A very tasty lunch indeed. Whilst we were eating the opera began - it was the funniest thing ever! We laughed our heads off constantly whilst three opera singers performed a skit about GBK and the food they offer. They'll be performing it at 1pm and 2pm every day this week (w/c 13 Oct). Get down there for the funniest lunch you'll have this year. Well done to all the performers, friendly staff, and thanks for the delicious free lunch. I love a good burger and this one certainly was tasty. I work in vauxhall and with the 15 min lunch promise, I'd be able to pop here for some grub in my lunch hour easily. Having only tried this place for the first time last month, it pains me to only just discover that this venue used to be on taste card, and I'd never used it there :( So the nearest place I would liken GBK to is a cross between Five Guys, Byron and Nandos. Whilst not as spartan as Five guys, expect to find a table and order at the front. You're offered peanuts similar to Five Guys, however they will give you a glass to put peanuts into, rather than just helping yourself on arrival. Ordering is as simple as Nandos, and they will helpfuly customise your orders within reason. For instance I ordered the Kiwi Burger and replaced the beef with chicken. It's a nice touch that you also get to choose between a grilled chicken breast, or having it fried in panko breadcrumbs. Panic being that really fine japanese breadcrumb you find on chicken made specially for katsu curry. Service is prompt and the burgers massive. The kiwi burger was stacked! The sweet potato fries I'd ordered as an accompanying dish was heaven with the small dipping container of BACONAISE. Yes that's a thing and yes it's just as awesome as it sounds. In all, the food is great, service is brilliant and prices just right. Customisation is key. If you're fussy about how you have your food, this is a place that won't judge or make you feel like your small request will take them an extra 30 mins to cater for. If you don't want bun in your burger they'll happily substitute with a small salad. That's just how things should be done. read more

Located super close to Waterloo station. Great friendly staff and atmosphere. They have a booth seating set up which is nice and different from any other branch of GBK I have been to. I ordered the Cajun chicken burger with a side of chunky fries. The burger was cooked to perfection and the chips were crunchy and fresh. The smell in the entrance isn't pleasant, but any further thought on it is whisked away by the prompt service of being shown to a table (be it that it's strange the staff picks up the menu behind the guest waiting in line). Shown to a table you have to then get up and make it to the bar to place your order. A bit odd, but acceptable given that service is again good, prompt and friendly. It is a while waiting for the food to arrive and one notes how cold the room is, at times. It's as if a back door is opened and cold winter air pours in waves into the seating area. I am about to ask to be reseated but it's random and I decide to remain. Food arrives and it's well presented. I start with the fries and they are cold. I have them replaced and again service is fast and friendly, but while warm my fries arrive too salty. The burger is pretty (the yellow cheese!), but dry and gives lots of resistance. The bread is like something you find at McDonalds and the patty while ordered 'medium' is on the 'well done' side. In fact it reminds me of a restaurant chain in Thailand, Sizzler, where they'd put a flag in the steak stating how it was cooked. There and here, then and now, the flag means nothing. It's only tacky. A real chef would cook to your taste, and would not need to put a sign saying something else on it... Medium is not medium just because a flag says so. Overall I'd say staff is good, the place not so much, the food even less. It cannot compare with a proper gourmet burger restaurant, in Europe, US or elsewhere. read more

I really like this branch of GBK - cool booths, more seating in the back too and good staff. In terms of burgers, I think they offer a lot of choice and they are cooked well (I like that you get the option of how well you would like your burger cooked). I tried the lamb burger this time which was pretty awesome (Harissa, mint yoghurt, cheese and rocket - yum). Accompany that with shoe string fries and an alcoholic ginger beer and you've got yourself a pretty tasty meal . GBK have such a wide choice I don't think you can go wrong (fish, beef, chicken, vegetarian burgers, and great sides). Oh they also have complimentary monkey nuts (if you like them) so you can nibble on those till the food arrives. I recommend getting the app too as you can earn some pretty awesome treats. Another installation of the GBK chain. Perfect for a fuss-free meal that is always consistent and high quality. Not one of those ridiculously posh burger chain spin-offs that are en vogue at the moment, but all of the classic burger ingredients are to be found with some monthly specials are available in addition to a good selection for vegetarians, chicken lovers, a fish option and even lamb and buffalo for the more adventurous. You pay when you order, so no need to worry about waiting around for the bill. The sides are excellent and include sweet potato fries and one of the best coleslaw sides on offer (think vinaigrette and not creamy, nasty goop). Good burger deals and rewards with their app as well and I get a generous 25% discount with a Picturehouse membership at all times (no Friday/Saturday exclusions). Ate there last night and it was busy, but we got a nice booth and the atmosphere was typical for GBK- buzzy with friendly staff. Always good value! read more

The homemade lemonade was a huge hit with my 5-year old kid. The kids burger was as remarkably large as the regular burger was small. Can you imagine a 1/4 pound cheeseburger costing $12 a la carte? Well that's what it is. But it's a good burger. Along with burgers, we tried both skinny fries (shoestring) and truffle cheese fries. Skip the truffle cheese ones. My mate and I often spend his lunch break at GBK on Portobello Rd. Though we usually seat ourselves, on this day there was a queue with a family of 4 ahead of us. I asked the family why they were queueing when there were so many tables available. They said the waitress/hostess had told them to wait for their table to be cleaned. As there were plenty of clean 2 seater tables available, we seated ourselves (as we usually do). The waitress came over and immediately demanded we get back in the queue. I pointed out that there were plenty of clean empty 2 seater tables. But she was curt in saying "No they are not clean". I examined the room and saw only 2 slightly dirty tables with only a few glasses on them. Nonetheless we obeyed her orders and got back in the queue. Though she claimed to be short staffed she certainly did not rush and took her time seemingly to punish us. She even made it a point to line up the legs on all the chairs and pfaff around a bit before returning to us. Meanwhile 3 separate groups walked past us to order at the takeaway counter. We waited another 15-20 minutes in the queue for no reason that we could see. Finally she motioned for us to sit at one of the tables which had been free, clean and available the whole time and from the time we entered. We asked for our usual meal which is 2 orders from the £6.95 Junior Menu. But after waiting all that time our drill sargeant told us that the policy had changed. Apparently we are no longer welcome to order the Junior Menu special unless we are 10 years old or younger. But we had always ordered this meal in the past and been assured by staff it was ok. This alleged new policy would have been disappointing enough in itself. But Suzanne seemed almost gleeful in telling us the bad news. She really seemed to be going out of her way to put us in our places. Having already wasted half of our lunch hour we ended up having to grab sandwiches at Tesco. The waitresses insistence that we stand and wait in a room with so many available tables is nothing short of sadistic. She seems confused about her role in the food service industry. I suspect she believes her job is to bully customers into submission instead of serving them. She really came across as a bullying tyrant. Not only do my mate and I eat there regularly but we have both been cheerleaders in the way we recommend the GBK Junior Menu deal to our mates. But we were humiliated and embarrassed by an employee who seemed to actively enjoy putting us down in front of the other customers and making us feel small. Completely unnecessary. read more

I am a huge fan of GBK and I have been to the waterloo branch many times before. However today we experienced extremely poor service. Waiters not smiling, felt like it was a task when we asked for things. Not a great representation of the place. Really great burgers! That is where it stops. The service at this place was a joke. We came in 45 minutes before the posted closing sign. The young man at the front begruggingly allowed us to sit down. No one came by to bring us menus or to tell us how this restaurant worked. (you have to go to the counter to order and then they bring the food to you). This same young man refused to bring us water and we had to go get it ourselves. At one point, he even came by and took the condiments right off our table as we were just starting to eat. We had to then go to other tables in the area to get what we needed. Overall, this was the worst service from one individual I could imagine. The bathrooms were gross and the attention we were paid was non-existant. Avoid this place at all costs!!!! read more

Me and my husband ate here during our time in London. My husband LOVED his burgers and fries and milkshake. He couldn't stop talking about how delicious his entire meal was. It was a slightly different story for me. I have Celiac Disease and ordered all my stuff off the gluten free menu, and I must say my experience was lack luster. Don't get me wrong--the flavors on the burger were delicious! However, the gluten free buns they use are terrible. Seriously, the worst I've ever had. They tasted dry, stale, and spongy. They fell apart easily, so it was a mess trying to eat my burger. I've had way better gluten free burger buns, and they should definitely look into changing that. Also, it was a bit disappointing their fries couldn't be done gluten free, all it takes is a separate fryer. While I think it's great they have a gluten free menu and attempt to cater to that a bit, I just think it could be done a little bit better.
