My Malaysian buddy invited me out for a Malaysian meal, who am I to refuse. A large restaurant with a very mom & pop chill vibe. Looks like a table by the front entrance is reserved for owner admin purposes. Front area filled with good luck paraphilia to ward off evil spirits. My friend knew all the staff and proceeded right away to speak Malay. Let my friend do the ordering, I recognized a few of the dishes such as beef curry, chicken curry (both with roti), boneless chicken rice plate, chicken skewers, grilled sambal stingray, penang hokkien mee and a few other dishes (look at photos) I didn't recognise. There was one interesting dish Rojak, a mixed salad of chopped fruit & vegetables smothered in a pungent fermented shrimp sauce, sweet, tangy, spicy, a whole smorgasbord of flavors dancing on my tongue. Three words I've never used to describe Roti, theirs was crunchy, fluffy and moist, wonderfully dipped either in the beef or chicken curry. Chicken skewers were grilled well, meat remained moist with a nice grilled aftertaste, not necessary to dip into the accompanied curry sauce as the overall flavor stood on its own. The Sambal sting ray was a little disappointing, didn't match the memory of the one I had at the Singaporean hawker food court I had a few years ago. Overall flavor was lacking. Penang Hokkien Mee is the real deal, large plump shrimp w/ firm egg noodles in a somewhat spicy flavorful broth. This is a no frills, easy going, family-style restaurant. The food is good. The staff are friendly and happy to provide recommendations when asked. Decor isn't really anything to write home about, it's not why we came here. The roti canai was super delicious. Roti was flaky and buttery, the curry nicely spiced and waiting to be sopped up by the roti. The Indonesian fried rice was recommended by the staff and it didn't disappoint. Hokkien mee had a lot of tasty rich sauce, but no smoky wok flavour. There were two small red pepper cubes. There were a lot of ingredients: cabbage, carrot, choy sum, shrimp, chicken, fish cake & squid. The squid was quite rubbery. The fish cake was not springy. There was a lot of it, maybe to replicate the look even if not the taste & texture of pork. Apam balik was good: pretty thin & crispy, though stickier than average. The filling was quite generous & tasty but the peanuts were pale & tasted a bit raw. Ayam percik: the chicken itself was very tender & juicy & pretty tasty. The curry was rich but a little generic. Char kway teow was good: quite flavourful though it could have a stronger flavour. There was some wok hei. The fish cake was slightly springy & there was quite a bit of squid. There were some chives but they don't serve it on a banana leaf anymore. Fried squid in nonya sauce was pretty tasty & quite spicy. It'd be better with okra or eggplant, not peppers. There was quite a bit of dried shrimp in it (fried squid is stir fried & crispy squid deep fried). Chicken rice rice was pretty good: moist enough & quite gingery. The chicken flavour could be stronger. Chendol was pretty good with rich palm sugar & coconut milk. There were green worms & grass jelly but no red bean. Nonya kueh was pretty good: they looked dodge but tasted about right though they were a bit soft. They have 2 versions of Nasi Lemak. The more expensive version has curry chicken, keropok & peanuts unlike the economy version (which does come with a banana leaf, though). The rice was not very fragrant but the curry was very rich so the smell kind of made up for it. It was not super tasty but was above average & moist enough. The curry was tasty & very rich but had a lot of bone fragments & was annoying to eat; the majority of mouthfuls had at least 1 bone fragment. It is a bad idea to put the curry & peanuts in your mouth at the same time. Sambal had a lot of ikan bilis with some onion but little liquid. It was pretty good though if you like to put it as a paste on your rice you will be disappointed. Keropok was very crispy & pretty tasty. read more

This establishment is located in an independent building off Sheppard Ave East. The premise offers free on premise parking, and also easily accessible via TTC by bus. The service here is friendly, and the price is really fair for the quantity of food you're getting. The fried noodle dish was huge and had a lot of 鑊氣! This was my second visit to this place. This time I tried their very popular item roti and chicken curry and I was surprised how similar it tasted to Indian food. The chicken curry was very close to a traditional chicken curry we cook in Indian households but they added coconut milk which made it slightly different. Roti was basically our paratha. Still good though. But my favourite was their deep fried fish fillet. This was such a great dish. In a lot of places they give a lot less of the fish and more of the batter for deep fried fish but this one had a really good amount of fresh fish inside which was so tasteful. Loved it! read more

Owner Fiona was helpful in suggesting Menu items that could be customized to your palate and spice level. We opted for take-out. Five stars for the food and the time it took to be prepared. Obvious love, care, heart, and soul has been poured into the business and it shows. Living in the US, authenticity can be difficult to find, but certainly not in the Toronto area. You have a concentration of cuisines, cultures, ethnicities, diversities, and backgrounds seemingly coexisting into a giant melting pot on literally every street corner and intersection. It is beautiful to see. We enjoyed the following (only managed to get two pictures - one of the Mee Goreng and one of the Beef Satay prior to eating): - Mee Goreng (with Shrimp, Squid, and Fishcake) - Indonesian Beef Fried Rice (the contrast of flavor in this dish was most notable). - Beef and Chicken Satay (the most tender and succulent skewers I have ever had along with a solid peanut sauce). - Beef Rendang (Perfectly spicy- not too dry and not too saucy). - Roti Canai (Flaky layers of goodness that ideally accompanied the dishes we had ordered). This place serves up some delicious and authentic Malaysian food! We ordered the Cendol (drink), Chicken Skewers (comes with 6 skewers) and the Nasi Goreng. The Nasi Goreng was my wife's favourite - it was full of "wok hay" and packed with flavour. The chicken skewers were grilled perfectly and came with a rich, peanuty sauce. The Cendol was very authentic - of all the other places I've visited that had this drink, I would say this was the best - you could taste the smokiness of the palm sugar. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because the interior feels a bit dated and could use a refresh. The service was reasonable - prompt in taking your order. What was neat was that they served some things, like the Cendol and Nasi Goreng, manually with humans, but used a robot to serve the satay. I'd definitely recommend checking this spot out! read more

Close to authentic. We travelled over one hour in traffic to Scarborough to check out Gourmet Malaysia, as good Malaysian Singapore restaurants are hard to find in the GTA. Fortunately, this restaurant did not disappoint. A visiting student from Singapore and father who was raised in Malaysia accompanied us, so our ratings were unanimous based on authenticity and taste. In terms of ambiance, half the restaurant was simple and plain, the other half had chair slipcovers and table cloths for more formal occasions. It would have been better to be consistent with at least tablecloths across the entire restaurant to give it better ambiance. Service was fair. Our menu selections were based on both the happy face icons (popular and recommended) and traditional Malaysian/Singapore foods. We tried the following: Seafood, Tofu & Salted Vegetable Soup, Chicken Satay Skewers, Penang Char Kwei Teow (Fried Hor Fun with mixed seafood), Hokkien Mee (a type of saucy noodle), Nasi Lemak Coconut Rice served with Curry Chicken, Egg, Peanut and Ikan Bilis (dried fish), Crispy Butter Prawns, Hot Sizzling Chicken in Indonesian Style, Nonya Dried Eggplant, and Beef Rendang. While all dishes were tasty, the Indonesian chicken, curry chicken portion of Nasi Lemak, Nonya Dried Eggplant, and Beef Rendang were our favourites. I did not taste the coconut in the coconut rice of the Nasi Lemak. I would try the Roti Canai with curry chicken if I were to return, as almost every other table had ordered it. I would also try some of the other menu items that also looked interesting. This time around, my friends and I decided to revisit the old haunt and share three dishes - Roti Canai, Char Kway Teow, and Nasi Lemak. * Penang Char Kway Teow looks deceivingly like beef rice noodle but don't be fooled, the taste is incredibly complex. The taste of the dish made here is bang on. That oh-so-good smokiness of caramelized rice noodles expertly prepared hawker-style is worth savouring every bite. * Nasi Lemak (Coconut Rice with Curry Chicken, Egg, Peanuts and Ikan Bilis). Often an excellent choice considering it's one of the national dishes of Malaysia. We grew up eating this dish and it often brings back fond memories. * Roti Canai (3 pieces of soft yet crispy, flaky roti served with your choice of curry). Maybe we should've ordered another one? Gourmet Malaysia is one of our go-to place for Asian foods more importantly Malaysian and Indonesian cuisine. The place looks dated and service is crappy but the food were always great, authentic and prices were reasonable so I always recommend this place to families and friends. Decided to visit this restaurant again after a two-year hiatus of not coming here and was surprised to see so many changes. First off they renovated the place, it's more brighter and spacious now. Gone are the ugly, old restaurants booths and replaced with better looking chairs and tables. One part of the restaurant has tables and chairs dressed in a fancy way with white covers and bow sashes which I'm assuming will be for large special events. Another thing you will noticed is that there's a Robot which delivers your food and drinks to the table. You can also find this same Robot in some restaurants in Malaysia. But my biggest dissatisfaction from dining in this place is how the quality of the food went downhill and the food prices tremendously went up. I get it that there was a surge in food prices lately and I don't mind them raising the prices. What I do mind is I expect to still get high quality great tasting food for the price I'm paying which is not the case here. I ordered my favorite, Nasi Goreng Fried Rice with Seafood and was extremely disappointed. Very oily, bland and the umami flavour you normally find in Nasi Goreng is lacking in this dish. There used to be different seafoods in this fried rice but only found a few squids. So basically this is just plain Fried Rice and nothing more. Sliced cucumbers on top is also missing. Another fave dish I usually order here is Penang Char Kwei Teow. Somehow, this dish is now inferior in every aspect - the lack of wok hei, noodles clumping together, wrong taste and texture wouldn't even entice me to order this dish again. Would I return back, not a chance! If the inconsistent dishes and low food quality improves, then maybe I would reconsider coming back here. read more

My husband & I came here for dinner with 4 of our friends. I initially made a reservation for 8 people on a Friday evening at 6 p.m. & asked to keep our large table even though our numbers changed and they kindly obliged. We decided on doing a family style dinner so that we could all taste multiple dishes. We ordered their Special Gourmet Malaysian Platter, Deep Fried King Prawns with Salt & Garlic Chili, Indonesian Fried Rice and Banana Leaf Grilled Stingray, Roti Cannai chicken & beef and Singapore Laksa. The platter was tasty though the spring rolls & mango salad was mediocre however the fish cake, satay and shrimp rolls was delicious. The deep fried Prawns & fried rice was nothing special. The stingray was different so we quite enjoyed it. The Roti Cannai both chicken and beef was good however I found the portion size was small (I think there were 2 small pieces of chicken in it). Lastly, the laska was okay however I've had much tastier homemade laksa before. Overall, I found the portions of everything quite small & the food taste was nothing to rave about. The exterior and the interior looks quite run-down but the food is pretty good. Quite authentic and very flavourful if you're looking for a good comfort-Malaysian cuisine. There are very few Malaysian restaurants and Gourmet Malaysia has been a favourite of my family since their food court takeout days in the plaza across the street. Their menu is pretty big with a wide variety of choices. We always order their Roti Canai as it is always so fresh and crispy! Their Satay Skewers are always a must order too, love the strong peanut flavour in their satay sauce. We decided to order their Indonesian Fried Rice for the first time and WOW, I can't believe we haven't tried it before! Full of seafood and flavour - enjoyed the fried egg on top as well. There were a lot of options on the menu and it was a difficult decision to choose only one item when everything sounded so good. I ended up going with the curry beef shank because how can you go wrong with curry? The dish does not come with rice so I ordered a bowl of coconut rice to complement the curry beef. Overall the curry was pretty good. The beef was very tender and the curry had a good flavour though it did not blow me away. The portions were a bit smaller than I expected given the price but it was not too bad. I cannot comment on the taste of the coconut rice as I suspect they mistakenly gave me plain white rice and not knowing if they will just throw the rice out I just ate it. If that was not the case then there was zero coconut taste to that rice. I ended up using the excuse of bringing back something for my partner to order another dish for takeout so I ended up getting to try the Hainan chicken with rice and chicken skewers. The chicken and rice was delicious as the chicken was soft and the rice was flavourful. The skewers were very tasty and was not dry at all. Overall glad I decided to order a portion for takeout as well. Service was fine, we were seated fairly quickly, our orders were taken promptly and the food arrived not long after we placed our orders. They have a robot server bringing you the food so that was interesting to see. The restaurant was big with a lot of seating. It was bright, clean and was comfortable overall. Tried Gourmet for the first time and was pleasantly surprised with the variety of the dishes (offered Malaysian, Indonesian and Singaporean fare). Got a bunch of stuff for lunch: - Gado Gado: More curry than peanut-y, but I liked it. Sauce was thick, could have used more veggies. - Crispy Squid: Tricky to execute but they did it well. Squid wasn't overly salty and was tender. Thin cut. - Crispy Butter Prawns: Crisped really well that I even ate the shell. Butter taste was strong but not sickening. - Nasi Goreng Rice: Huge mound of rice for the price. Tasty and with enough seafood in it. - Chendol: Overly sweet. Some of my favourites are their mee goreng, stir fried belachan greens, char kway teow, nasi lemak and roti canai. They have quite an extensive menu so there have been the occasional miss but the classics are always great. They have wok hei flavours and strong punchy flavours. It's been nearly 8 years since my last review of this place, and they are still standing. That's how you know they're doing something right! Their chicken curry with roti is still delicious. But the star is definitely the char kway teow, with delicious wok hay notes. Make sure to ask for some of the balachan sauce, which goes well with basically every savoury non soupy thing on their menu. The oyster omelet is also delicious (forgot to take a picture, sorry). Finally gotten the opportunity to come grab their food after hearing from others of their tasty dishes and experience. So we ordered takeout by calling them. Got to this place and I felt like I was back in the 80s cause the venue does look a bit dated. However, I ain't here for a sit-in. So let's get on with the food. We ordered a Laksa and an Indonesian fried rice. Upon picking up the goodies, I can smell the aroma on the drive home. When we unboxed the food, the portions were huge! (We were able to save 2 extra meals worth of leftovers). So definitely a "bang for buck". Onto the food, both these dishes tasted amazing. I guess because it was dead, the waitress keep coming by our table every minute asking if we were ready. (One time she even yelled across the room asking if we were ready to order, which i felt very uncomfortable) We had a couple questions regarding what the tom yum soup noodles vs the vegetarians tom yum soup came with. We asked a male waiter, and he said the regular one came with seafood and chicken "floss", i believe he meant shredded chicken. So i asked, what about the vegetarian, he said vegetables. So i asked, what kind since i am not a fan of green/red pepper. He said oh, it comes with Tofu and "flour", i said wait what flour? He said "f-l-o-u-r". Im like okay, I know thats how you spell it, but like do u mean cauliflower or broccoli (since he is not a english speaker)? He said let me go ask, he came back in a minute, saying tofu, mushroom, green leafs. We ended up ordering a vegetarian tom yum soup, and a regular Pad thai. The tom yum soup came in 5 minutes. I looked at the dish, and i was so confused. Lets not talk about the taste, just the look. A regular bowl of tom yum soup is usually very red/yellowy colour, thick soup base. This one looked like a regular soup noodle with raw, large chunky tomatoes, mushrooms, and NOT TOFU, but bean curd. If you don't know what i ordered, I 100% guarantee you will say this is a tomato soup base noodle with vegetable toppings. (Pictures below). Taste wise. 0/5. Noodles not fully cooked, some still sticking together and extremely hard. The soup doesnt not have any taste to it, just taste like water with a hint of tomato. ABSOLUTELY DISAPPOINTING. After that, the Pad Thai came. Look like a bowl of regular noodles from a Chinese restaurants. No lime was given. The peanut was sticking together in that little container. It was very stale peanuts to be honest. Taste wise, 1/5. It has flavour, but it smelled and tasted like burnt noodles. It tasted like when you know the pan you cooked at home was burnt earlier the day, and you still decided to not wash the pan and make fried rice with it. Thats how it basically turned out. Very unpleasant. Overall, I would say even though they name themselves as "Singapore / Malaysian" restaurant. It is just a regular Chinese owned restaurant that is making you regular Chinese food with a Malaysian/Singapore named dish. Not saying all the food they make are bad, but the food I specially ordered that night was one of the worst meals i have ever had in my life. This place is 100% Asian/Chinese, even the waiter/waitress. The food options are extremely similar from a Chinese fast food restaurant AKA a 茶餐廳 if you can read Chinese. Will i come back? I do not think so, but if you want some fast Chinese food, come and give it a try, i guess? Good luck! Disclaimer: if you had a great meal, good for you. No hate at all. We haven't been to many Malaysian restaurants. This may be the second one we've ever been to. It did not disappoint! Our server was friendly and helpful. Service isn't the most attentive but the food made up for that. This place is forking up some good eats. Everything from start to finish was fresh and well seasoned. I highly recommend the Roti Cannai and Chicken Satay. Flavor explosion in your mouth. There is plenty of indoor seating available. They have private party rooms available in the back as well, which is nice to know. If we lived here, this would definitely be a spot we'd have a celebration at. The ambiance is laid back. Parking was a bit difficult to find, we ended up finding a spot near a grocery store beside the restaurant. Overall, great food, generous portions, and well priced. read more

Huge menu of mostly authentic items from Malaysia. The char kway teow was good as was the mee goreng. Nasi lemak was good as well with fragrant chicken curry and excellent sambal bilis and perfectly steamed rice. The Singapore Laksa was more convincing as curry mee. Holkien prawn mee was a KL style. Kailan belacan was excellent and will need steamed rice to pair with the pungent savory goodness. The star of the meal was roti canai. The texture was flaky outside and stretchy moist inside. First time Malaysian food for me with my Asian food guide pushing me at things I havent tried. The Hainanese chicken rice wow. Mmm. Ordered the appetizer with the Satay sauce and kabob mmm. The shrimp paste with veg really thrown on a high temperature wok wow. I need more malaysian food guides lol. This was good. We came here on a whim after a long day at the bluffs and once I saw and tasted the food, I was pleasently surprised. We were a big group so we ordered many things, which included roti with beef curry/with chicken curry, fried chicken drumsticks, chicken satay skewers, beef satay skewers, Sambal eggplant, assorted platter, tom yum soup, salt and pepper calamari, shrimp, sweet and sour fish, Nasi-Lamak Fried Rice, and this dish wrapped in banana leaf with a egg and dried fish on top. Overall this place was really good, but I recommend sticking to the curries, the nasi lamak fried rice, and the skewers. The Pros The Roti with curries were really good, the rotis were borderline crispy and the curries were really rich and flavorful, the only thing imo that would have made is better if if they added some more coconut milk or somethinf to cut the curry. The skewers were nicely charred and really tender, the only bad thing is that they were gone in an instant. My favorites were the nasi lamak? fried rice, the fried chicken, and the calamari. The fried rice had the flavor of the curries without over powering each individual ingredient, the calamari was simple, crispy, well seasoned, and good but what really was a treat were the fried chicken drunsticks. they deboned most of the meat and flipped it over, similar to a delicious meat lolipop. The Cons I did not enjoy the fried shrimp or the sweet and sour fish. They were coated in so much sauce that i could barely taste the shrimp flavor itself, only an intense and artifical sweet and sour. The sweet and sour fish had such a thick of batter that i felt like i needed to do some digging in order to find the fish. The tom yum soup was subpar and although it had numerous fresh ingredients, the soup itself tasted like something out of a box. read more

Food was ok and the service was also the same I highly recommend this Malaysian restaurant !

We ventured out of our 'hood for COVID19 takeout this long weekend (it's Victoria Day!) and grabbed a couple of meals' worth of goodies from this place. We had high expectations, as this place came highly recommended from three different friends/acquaintances, none of whom know each other, and all of whom are from Singapore or Malaysia (hope my geography is correct, those are two different places, right?) Consider all expectations met! Really good, delicious food. Highlights include: Nasi Goreng -- I know, it's just rice, but really nice flavour from the sauce and the seafood bits, just different enough from Chinese versions to make it interesting. The egg was cooked by the time we got it home, I'm guessing it's supposed to be served with the yolk a bit runny? Beef Rendang -- soooo good...really rich flavour, a good amount of brisket (a few pieces of fat and tendon but we're Asian, totally cool with that). Deep fried fish with garlic/chillies/salt -- it was good, but Chinese restos have something similar. Skip it if you want to have something different. Boxing chicken -- better than I expected. Marinated drumettes, then deep fried and dipped in a plum sauce kind of thing (which we didn't get enough of). I wonder what they do with the wings? Flat rice noodles with seafood (Char Kwei Teow). It was OK. Like a fairly standard Cantonese dish made with beef and bean sprouts, just sub the beef for seafood - shrimp, squid, etc. Beef curry with roti -- we were literally all scared to try this, because of how red the sauce was! We all saved it for last, because we thought it would be so spicy we wouldn't taste anything else. Wrong! Subtle curry flavours, not spicy at all, really tender meat. Roti was still OK by the time we got home but I can imagine how awesome it would be eating fresh in the resto. Chicken and beef skewers -- good, not great. Peanut sauce was tasty. Only disappointing dish was a tofu/pork casserole. Compared to everything else, it lacked any flavour. Wouldn't order it again. We're looking forward to trying other dishes -- Hainan chicken, Singapore Laksa, the yellow noodles, and looking for some interesting vegetable dishes which we somehow forgot to look at when we ordered. And really looking forward to a future where we can eat in and enjoy everything fresh from the kitchen. read more

The food was tasty. Service and server were friendly and nice. My problem was the water smell chlorine. I couldn't drink tap water smell chlorine. The restaurant was a bit old. Cleanliness is about 7 out of 10. read more
