This was the worst experience of my life. The waitress was aggressive and rude and slapped the food on the table. They forced us to order 3 cheese plates among 4 people and they were the most disgusting and subpar plates I have ever seen. I could've gotten a better cheese plate at the gas station down the street. The wine was bitter and gross- similar to how I felt when I left this winery! First time going to a vineyard and it didn't disappoint! Glad I finally checked this off my bucket list. I didn't know what to expect but it exceeded my expectations. Now I know why girls love doing this! Gouveia is located in a beautiful part of Wallingford. The area seemed massive and well maintained. Luck was on our side as it was a beautiful sunny day and we were able to grab a table outside and enjoy the weather with even better company. There's also large dining hall-like tables inside and plenty of room for bigger parties if sitting outside isn't your thing. It's bring your own food so we came prepared with the typical cheeses/meats/crackers. In terms of wine that Gouveia offers.... to preface, I'm a complete wine novice. But I may have been officially converted to a wine lover. I never got the appeal of drinking wine until now (probably because I was drinking crappy brands and didn't know it!) Their rose was soooooo good! We ended up getting 3 bottles because it was that addicting and it definitely got us feeling a little loose. It's sweet and tastes like juice but paired so well with everything we ate. I recommend the carbonated version of it though -I didn't realize this was option until the very end. My friends also ordered some other reds and whites; I can't remember the names but they all tasted fine to me. If you're looking to kick back, relax, and enjoy the scenery with your friends, this is the place to be. Looking forward to my next trip out here as we didn't have a chance to really walk and explore the vineyard as much. read more

Ok, so maybe I shouldn't have visited this vineyard on Columbus Day Weekend. Our first sign that we had picked the wrong weekend was the sea of hundreds of cars leading up to the winery. I've never seen so many cars at one winery at the same time - and I've visited 16 vineyards on the CT wine trail in the past 3 months. Some of these wineries were fabulous. This one was not. When we entered, it was wall-to-wall people. I'm pretty sure that Snooki, her whole "posse", and all their friends and family were there at the same time. I kept thinking the film crew was going to show up, but I never did spot them. Every table in the place was packed full, both of the wine tasting bars were several people deep with customers (most of whom were waiting with scowls on their faces), and the facility and number of staff members were completely insufficient for the number of guests. I finally squeezed into a spot at one of the bars reserved for customers to buy bottles of wine and was promptly told that if I wanted a wine tasting I had to wait in the other line. I simply asked for my CT Wine passport to be stamped and inquired where the ladies room was. She gestured over to left where a long line of women were out the door and down a passageway. The other ladies room on the other side of the building was equally, if not more, congested. Quite frankly, I don't care if they have the best wine in the world - I'm not waiting in a line that isn't moving (while packed in like a sardine) for the privilege of tasting their wine. Needless to say, we hit the road and didn't look back. I'd like to be able to say that I'd try it again another time, but in all honesty, I probably won't. There are too many other good choices to bother returning to this quagmire tl;dr - I drove all the way here to taste wine, and I left without tasting any. Gouveia is absolutely stunning! Upon arriving, I noticed that people were freely walking around with wine bottles and glass and were able to pretty much sit anywhere outside that they pleased, which is definitely ideal! We were immediately greeted by a woman who was checking IDs outside. Unfortunately she did not give much direction and just told us to stand in line. When walking inside we were not immediately greeted by anyone and I had to ask how we could sit inside. Thankfully someone sat us. She left out though that we had to go to the bar ourselves and get food ourselves. We pretty much looked around confused. After figuring out how to get the wine, which was absolutely amazing! (We got to bottle of Pinot Noir) I had to ask the woman how we could get food. They served a small cheese plate and there was a food truck outside. Overall the experience was good, but the lack of direction was quite frustrating. read more

I had a tough time deciding between a 3 and 4 rating for Gouveia Vineyards. The wines were not my favorite (then again I can be picky), but the scenery is wonderful and the wine tasting is a great deal (plus you get a pretty souvenir glass and can bring your own food) so it's getting a 4. For wine tasting, you get to taste 5 wines (you pick one of them). I'm generally a Merlot drinker so I wasn't into the whites or sweeter wines. That said, I did like the fruity taste of a couple of the wines as well as the oak aftertaste of the Chardonnay Oak. The Stone House Red is also a popular choice with many red drinkers. There is also yummy sangria! Also, the scenery is beautiful! Definitely get a glass of wine and slowly walk through the fields and towards the lake, where there are white marble benches to sit on and you can see the sun through the trees. You can also bring your own food and picnic outside. Even if you aren't inside, the building has giant windows and a great view. Definitely come on a warm sunny day. read more

This is a gem of the Connecticut wineries! Located in Wallingford, CT, Gouveia is the perfect setting for a wine tasting or relaxing with friends. They allow you to bring your own food (no outside alcohol) and provide picnic tables with umbrellas for their guests. I went with two of my girlfriends on a Monday evening after work for a unique happy hour. We did the $10 wine tasting (not the best I've ever done) and settled on a bottle of rose to share. We had a fantastic picnic with us and stayed until closing at 8pm. It was a gorgeous night and we had the best time. The wines themselves are hit or miss. I loved the rose and one of the drier reds (not a fan of sweet reds), but I wasn't blown away with the whites. CT isn't known for their wines and this vineyard, like many other in the state, has to bring in grapes from other regions for some of their varieties. The bottle of rose cost $16 and tasted lovely. read more

As a vineyard, Gouveia isn't a destination, especially for a Californian like me. The wines are not bad, but they're nothing special, and you can get better for cheaper at your local wine shop. That said, they are very reasonably priced, ranging between $15 and $25 per bottle. I opted for a tasting, which came with a complimentary Gouveia Vineyards wine glass for a minimal $7. The tasting included six different kinds of wine. Five of these were designated by the winery - two white, one rose, two red - and we got to choose our last wines. This was not a bad deal, though I did think the service was a little cursory, with little explanation of what we were drinking. I guess the counter was busy, but I wasn't impressed. Regardless, I enjoyed the tasting and was actually a bit tipsy when we were done. My general impression of the wines were that they were either very sweet or a bit too harsh, but that they were easy to drink. The best part about Gouveia, though, is the venue. The place is quaint and cute, with a spacious, welcoming interior and plenty of seating inside and out. And guess what - it's BYOF. BYOF would be the food equivalent of BYOB, so what that boils down to is that the space is free for anyone to use, so long as all beverages are purchased on site. The grounds are gorgeous, and on a nice day, Gouveia is perfect for a picnic, with tables and chairs and scenic venue provided for the cost of libations, which you still get the benefit of drinking. Water and soft drinks are available in addition to wine, but wine is well suited to the lovely surroundings. My visit here was for a birthday party potluck for a group of at least twenty people. We had no problem securing tables outside on the grass, and we feasted and drank and enjoyed our surroundings. When I left I was full and happy and just a little bit sunburned. It was a fabulous day, and I would love to go back. read more

Absolutely loved this vineyard. The view is stunning and the wines were tasty. The staff was really nice and knowledgeable too. They give you 5 tastings for $10 and bottles of wine are around $20. I went with my boyfriend on a beautiful sunny Saturday. We brought cheese and crackers and sat and relaxed for hours. The view here is nicer than Paradise Hills but the chairs and tables aren't as nice-more like benches (and be careful, they can be really hot too). read more

The views from Gouveia are so beautiful. Bring your camera and a picnic basket with food and pairings for your wine and make the most of your day. We easily spent 5 hours here and could have spent longer if our children weren't tired. This vineyard is family friendly. I suggest getting there before Noon on the weekends as it starts to fill up around that time. There is lots of space to sit inside as well as outside. There is a big, white tent outside with benches to sit under and other benches and tables around the property grounds to enjoy as well. We brought our own picnic blanket and a little table top but didn't need it as we sat on one of their tables right next to the actual vineyards, making for a beautiful afternoon. read more

What a beautiful experience. We were here celebrating our 4th anniversary and I must say Iam highly pleased with our decision to visit. Not only was the staff very knowledgeable and friendly as well as accurate with their tasting description. The prices were very friendly and we were able to obtain our wine passport book(which is a absolute must). They provided 5 selections for the tasting with a complimentary engraved glass to take home. We purchased (2) bottles that were not one the tasting menu that they provided us samples of as well as we took home an additional (2) bottles based off the tasting menu. I would highly recommend this experience as well as recommended becoming a member to enjoy some of the perks that they offer. read more

Where do I even begin with this ridiculous excuse for service. If you're under 25, they don't want you here. The owner requires two forms of ID if you're under 25, and will refuse service if you can't provide both because "we get a lot of underage people using fakes," but they use an ID scanner. If your scanner can't differentiate between a real and fake license, that's not my problem, and guests shouldn't be unfairly discriminated against for simply being young. We're finally seated after 20 minutes of proving we're allowed to be there, and we're approached by staff who claims people felt "uncomfortable" by our presence. As the only guests seated in the grass at least 100ft away from everybody else, not to mention on a Wednesday evening when business was light, we were shocked to hear that a group of young women taking pictures and enjoying wine at a winery was a sight no one there had apparently ever seen before. We will not be returning and we encourage any other group of young women looking for a pleasant and welcoming winery experience to take their business literally anywhere else if you don't want to be judged and grossly sexualized by staff and other guests incapable of keeping their eyes out of your dress. read more

Had an enjoyable visit at this winery! Came by here on a weekend in the summer for a wine tasting. The vineyard landscape is beautiful, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and you can bring food/snacks to enjoy with your wine. There was a lot going on the day we went - a group was having a bridal shower, someone else was celebrating their birthday, etc, so it was a fun atmosphere. We bought a bottle of their red blend (Sunset Red) and enjoyed it at one of their benches outside with beautiful views of the rolling hills. It was casual and relaxing. Grew up in CT but had no idea that wineries existed here! What a pleasant surprise. This place is gorgeous. I came here on a Sunday with friends and it was packed. There was ample parking and our large group of 8 didn't have to wait much for a tasting. Tasting was $12 for 5 wines. Not bad prices! 4 were ones they selected and you could choose the 5th from their list. The wines were great. I did feel like the tasting moved a little too fast though. Maybe they were trying to get through people. I would've preferred a little more relaxed. After the tasting we grabbed a bottle and sat outside. They have a large area inside as well as outside. It's really pretty outside. Good place to hang with a group or for any type of celebration. I saw a couple birthday parties. read more

Bottom line first: I really don't like most of their wines. That being said...I do love their sangria in the summer! It's just so limited as to when they have it. But the views are gorgeous and the tasting room is huge. Also, in the summer, they have so much outdoor seating to accommodate all of the visitors. Not to mention, they let you being your own food and hang out there for as long as you like. I previously liked Gouveia on Facebook, so today I saw they had hot mulled wine and the double sided fireplace was going...that was all I needed to hear! We went to check it out in the early evening before dinner. We got a great seat right in front of the fireplace, and I loved the hot mulled wine!! It was yummy....my new winter drink of choice. We only got there about an hour before closing, so we had a couple drinks in front of the fireplace and then left and went out to dinner. We live in Middletown, so the vineyard is closely located to us. We go for the setting, ambiance and the fact that we can bring whatever food we want, meet up with friends and stay as long as we want. If you do a tasting and don't love their regular wines, I highly recommend the sangria in the summer and the hot mulled wine in the winter! read more

Came here for a tasting and just to have a lunch on their patio on a beautiful day. At $8 a person, the wine tasting is pretty informal. You get to sample 4 selected wines, then one of your own choice. Skimpy "tasting" sizes, i wanted to get a little buzz going! But you get to keep the glass, and its nice to have after you buy a bottle of your favorite. The bottle purchased was quite thin, I didnt know you still got sample sizes when purchasing the whole thing! The patio area started getting extremely crowded around 2 pm, they started bringing out more tables and chairs to accommodate the crowds. Pretty nice view and nice atmosphere overall. Alcohol always helps reviews, but this gets its rating from a combination of the tasting experience, scenery, and the atmosphere. Our friends and I arrived at Gouveia with our doggy for a wine tasting. The friends and I went up to the bar for the tasting, while my wife (who conveniently doesn't drink), went around with our doggy to chill outside. The tasting area was a small bar size, so it couldn't handle more than 10 people at a time I think, but the tasting isn't very long anyway, so it turned out fine. For the tasting, there was a standard set menu of 4 pours, followed by a choice of one of the other wines that they list on a larger menu. The wines were very delicious - fruity whites were more fruity than expected, and the reds we tried were not very dry. The dessert wine available was a chocolate wine, which met up to its name; it was super chocolatey. Totally worth the extra cost for tasting that one. After the tasting, we bought a bottle that we shared outside, sitting with my wife and our dog. The views were great, sun was starting to set, and the atmosphere both inside and out were relaxing and enjoyable. Many people inside had set up their own mini banquets as they enjoyed the wines they bought from the vineyard to drink right there. Others, like our group, enjoyed chatting outside, where light breezes accompanied the relaxing scenery of the vineyard and surrounding forest from the top of the hill where the vineyard is. 100% recommend a weekend visit in the spring/early summer. read more

We visited on a gorgeous autumn Saturday afternoon with friends. When we arrived we were unclear as to the process to start the wine tasting or even where the entrance was located. The bartender at the front bar was helpful and instructed us to purchase our wine tasting tickets at the bar. Tastings are every 1/2 hour and they weren't offering any wine tours on this day. The wine selection for the tasting is preselected and you're able to choose 1 of your choice at the end. We would have preferred to try 5 wines of our choice. We purchased 4 bottles for our table, Whirlwind Rose and Stone House White. We were lucky to snag a picnic table after our wine tasting, be prepared picnic tables are first come first serve. There is only one outdoor bathroom where most of the guests are. So don't wait until it's too late to wait in that bathroom line! Besides the initial confusion we had a great experience overall..if you come to this place with a great company you will always have a great time. You may be a little uneasy at your first visit because of all of the people around and lack of instruction. Quick tip: don't forget to pack your picnic they don't serve or sell food. But they do provide take-out menus for delivery! Overall, it is a great place to be. It's a place where you can meet new people and hang out with groups of friends all while enjoying great wines and beautiful scenery. 4 stars for the view and very friendly staff. Unfortunately we did not do a full tasting, I did try their Pinot Grigio and it was pretty good. My friend tried one or two of their reds and one of them was delicious. A little carbonated tasting, but very good nonetheless. I ended up ordering their sangria because I really wanted something a little more refreshing. It was amazing, but the glasses were much smaller than the winery we had gone to right before this one which was disappointing. We definitely got less for the same price. The fruit in my sangria was STRONG though, so really no complaints there. The view was amazing from any end you went to. On one side there's a beautiful pond and the other side is just breathtaking (photos didn't do it justice). I would definitely stop by again to do a tasting and to spend a little more time here. If you want an easy escape and a beautiful view, go to Gouveia. The vineyard is up on a hill and offers a sweeping landscape view. There's even a little pond out front if that is more in line with what you're looking for. Inside, there are two tasting bars and a number of tables spread around the two rooms. Outside, you have the option of a vine-covered patio, picnic tables or patio tables on the edge of the vineyard, or you can bring your own picnic setup. You're welcome to bring any food you want but no outside beverages are allowed (they sell water and soda in addition to their wine and sangria). The wines here are decent. I prefer their whites but like just about everything they have. They've also recently released a Muscat, which is probably the best wine I've had there. It does tend to fill up during nice weather, and since they don't take reservations, you are taking a chance by driving out there. Luckily, there are some other vineyards nearby, so you can easily visit all 3 in one day and can return to Gouveia once the day has calmed down a bit. read more

I may have a new favorite vineyard on the CT Wine Trail! We stopped here to take photos since the views are gorgeous, and we were not disappointed!!! From the pond and willow tree to the vineyards themselves to the view of the CT Valley, there is no shortage of backdrops for perfect photos. The wines that we tried as part of the tasting package were not overly dry, which is perfect for my palate. I am not normally a red wine fan, but their Stone House Red is phenomenal. We also really enjoyed the Pinot Grigio and the Cayuga White, which came highly recommended. The chocolate reserve was surprisingly rich - I was expecting somewhat of a stout taste but it was a pleasant surprise. Strikingly beautiful grounds. Breathtaking views. Often crowded. Views for miles and miles. Wine is fair on a good day. The plus? They make sangria, which is fabulous. You can bring in your own food, as they don't have any for sale. But you can NOT bring in any beverages- including water- you MUST buy it there. You can hold a party or a gathering there, but no reservations and there are signs everywhere for no bridal showers. Not exactly sure why though...
