We stumbled upon Small Batch Cellars last night in North Haven. It was on a dead end street so there was plenty of parking. We went and had tasting trays of every wine (that wasn't wine club only). I am normally a red drinker, but I like most of the wines we tried enough to get a glass! I think my favorite was Late For Dinner (great name too)! The place had a cozy and beautiful tasting room. The owner and head winemaker shared so much information about these wood barrel aged wines. She was so attentive and knowledgeable. We enjoyed talking to her as much as we enjoyed the wine! We went out to the patio and it was a beautifully set space! They have events coming up that we are looking forward to attending. Unfortunately, we missed karaoke, but we will be back!

I visited this winery this weekend upon the suggestion of a friend, who saw a billboard advertisement on 91. It is pretty easy to get to off Exit 9 (91). It is on a dead end street with plenty of parking in a lot. Before reaching the front door, I passed through a cute patio, but too dark and cold for that tonight! Looking forward to relaxing there in the spring. The tasting room is small, but it's so pretty; it's definitely one of the fanciest and upscale rooms I've seen. Paul took us on a tour of the space, and filled us in on all of their future plans for those spaces; very exciting. There is also a nice room off to the side of the tasting room where they can host private tastings of up to 10 people. For now, guests are encouraged to bring their own food, which we did, and they provided us with glasses of water. We each did a tasting, for a total of ten wines. My personal favorites were the Summer Blend and Rift. We had the opportunity to chat with Michael and Kristen, the owners, and learned a lot about their inspiration and production. I even ended up signing up for their wine club! Oh yeah... they have stickers of their wine labels, and the artwork is beautiful! I encourage everyone to support Small Batch Cellars by enjoying a glass (or two)... not a bad deal!

Small Batch Cellars is a craft microwinery that opened in North Haven, Connecticut in April 2022. It was founded by business partners Kristen Parsons and Michael Annatone. Parsons has been a professional winemaker for over 15 years. She worked at several wineries and vineyards in Washington state and Virginia before becoming the head winemaker at Chamard Vineyards in Clinton in 2015. Annatone is an entrepreneur, wine lover and founder of several landscaping companies including Executive Landscaping and Naturally Green. The two formed a partnership and started creating their own small batch vintages. By the summer of 2020, the two decided to open their own winery and Small Batch Cellars was born. My family and I recently stopped in for a visit to Small Batch Cellars. We heard that a new winery opened up in our hometown, so we decided to try out their wines. We picked up some takeout food on the way there to enjoy with our tasting. When we arrived, we were greeted by the owners who said, "Oh are you here for the live music tonight?" We had no idea that there was live music that night, but that was fine with us. We loved all of the decor at the winery and the smell of the wooden barrels. For a second we felt like we were in the cellar of an old Italian winery and not in a business park. My wife and I decided to order a sampler flight which included "Evolution" (Muscat Canelli), "La Vie au Soleil" 2020 (Chardonnay), "Mood Swing" (Riesling), "La Vie en Rose" 2021 (Rosé blend), and "Late for Dinner Zin" 2020 (Zinfandel). We really enjoyed trying all of our samples as we ate our food and listened to the sweet sounds of local folk/bluegrass band Plain Maple. I later ordered a full glass of "Heritage Premiere Cuvée" 2019 (Red Blend) which was my favorite offering of the evening. We ended up purchasing a bottle of "Evolution" to take home. We all had a nice family outing at Small Batch Cellars and we look forward to returning in the future!

    Delicious Zinfandel wine.

The ceviche was excellent, everything was cooked throughout by the citrus. The portion size is small for $19 and it could have used a side of bread or tortillas to soak up the delicious citrus based broth. The skewers were also excellent. They were cooked perfectly, super tender, juicy and flavorful. They cooked them with a seasoning and had a delicious chimi on top.

In a display of restaurant solidarity , they recommended that we try Vinas Wine & Tapas. As it turned out, we have a NEW favorite in New Haven! We arrived a bit early and were cheerfully greeted by Mike G, our server. The atmosphere was welcoming and relatively quiet, since their musical offering does not start as early as our 5:00-7:00 PM time slot on a Tuesday. We had asked for the waiter Christian because he had been mentioned in several of the Yelp reviews, but Mike proved that the service compliments should go to everyone. First, the tapas: We enjoyed all five of the tapas we chose. The "Calamares" were lightly battered and crispy. The Vinas salad was fresh, with tomatoes, cheese, corn, and croutons. The pork belly was delicious and more meaty than expected . The oyster mushrooms were presented with onion crisps. The baked birria empanada was stuffed with brisket style beef. Each of these "courses" was a unique delight to the palate, and for me and my partner, it was completely satisfying. In keeping with the spirit of a "wine bar," Vinas offered a flight of 4 wines in 3 ounce glasses, and after hearing about our food choices and wine preferences, Mike chose the wines for us, giving us a chance to taste some less familiar offerings. We had the Felino Malbec 2024 (Argentina), which became our favorite for its full-bodied and deep flavor. Our second wine was a unique Don Abel (private label) from Wallingford CT, made by one of the relatives of the owner, specially for Vinas. This one reminded us of the local wines one might receive in a B&B in the Loire Valley in France. The final two wines were both from Chile: Reserva Carmenere 2023 and Cabernet Sauvignon Marques de Casa Concha 2022. Both were excellent wines. It was great fun to have Mike choose the wines for us, and we really enjoyed the variety that the flight offerings gave to us. Of course, we had to try a dessert, and Mike recommended the Toffee Cake. We had heard that the owner claimed that some people cried with joy after eating it. Although we restrained ourselves, we had to agree that this was an extraordinary conclusion to a fabulous meal. Overall, this was a great experience for us, and we heartily recommend Vinas Wine Bar and Tapas for a relaxing and welcoming dinner. Some reviews I had read suggested that the portions were too small for the price. I have to disagree. My partner and I love food, and this was plenty. And the price was reasonable. Including tip and tax, we spent about $75 each.
