After this wild workout everyone got a little paper bag full of tuck shops sweets, it was great! After the ice-skating my dad usually took us to the swimming pool, the river rapids were my favourite part and I could swim here for hours. I particularly remember the scary red dragon statue and the cave men who looked down on your when you were swimming round the pool, one of them was wielding a spear which I have to admit, was a little bit scary. They also have a huge play area with ball pools, slides, climbing walls - it just looks amazing. Unfortunately, my parents never let me go here and I feel that I've missed out. At the moment the play area pool is closed for major refurbishment, who knows what it will look like when it's finished? I think I might take a trip back soon for good old times sakes. A fantastic day out for all the family!

During these times the pool is usually only open to people taking part in the classes therefore it's best to check the website beforehand to avoid disappointment. During the summer holidays it's probably best to go early in the morning as during the day it's usually choc-a-block as children under the age of 16 get to swim for free during school break.

If you have an East Renfrewshire Council Access All Areas card (library card) you get a discount on entry or any if the PAYG monthly memberships. The swimming pool varies between a pleasure and a torture. I've given up trying to do a decent number of lengths in a decent time as the only time the pool is open that I can attend are immediately after work or Saturday morning. There are always swimming lessons on during the week (group taking up 2 lanes, individual ones across the pool) and on a Saturday morning it's mobbed with pensioners who want to stand in the middle of the pool and talk rather than swim. The main pool will become busier and busier due to recent manpower cuts closing the kids/learning pool at peak times. The changing facilities are good and secure. Lockers mostly work with the obligatory dodgy 2 or 3. Mothers of kids learning to swim tend to occupy entire swathes of cubicles closer to the pool and the pool side showers which can be a bit intimidating as a single bloke. I use the health suite more than the pool and it's of a decent standard. The sauna has recently been refurbished and looks good. The steam room seems to need almost constant maintenance and every once in a while the forget to switch it on. No compensation for lost days either! I've never used the gym but it looks busy and I hear there are plans to expand it but God only knows where! There are often running and cycling classes taken place in and around the leisure centre. All-in-all it's ok but needs improvement.

They're chatty, friendly, full of information - and if they can't tell you something then they go out of their way to find someone who can. I've had pool guards politely step in to help teach my son and daughter to swim - just little tips to help the parental lessons. When I turned up without change for the pool lockers (it's a £1 coin), a member of staff took 90-something pence from me and told me not to worry about the pennies. The gym is good and personal trainers are available, and the main hall is used frequently for sporting tuition and markets. Even the canteen is pleasant with its view of the pool. Quibbles? The car park often gets rammed due to sheer popularity and you have to be at least 16 (I think) to look after another child in the swimming pool. This makes it a little awkward for me to take all three of our kids unless my wife joins us. A place where you can feel pampered and in a place with an atmosphere of solitude and tranquillity with the use of Serene Victorian Turkish Suite, Steam room and saunas and Victorian slipper baths and hot tubs (which are gender segregated see link for more details*) Its got a bar in which they host occasional small concerts and since its run by its members, anyone can propose something special for the space. It has awesome rings and trapeze over the pool that is as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. They have a slightly cooler pool that is filtered with charcoal filters and UV so that they don't need to use harsh chemicals, so an all round nicer experience than your regular pool and possibly better for those with sensitive skin. The gym up stairs (formally the Billiards/Snooker Hall) hold a good range of equipment and should fit your needs should you want to burn some calories or work on those glutes! Ill end in saying that a little more expensive it may be than your regular pool but it is SO worth it, so check out the memberships options, get a free pass or come in on doors open day, you wont regret it. However, that being said, it was about time that they extended the gym, and so far, it really has helped - unless you go at peak times and the sports teams are practicing and the changing rooms are stupidly full and all the weights are in use. My tiny little pet peeve, which you should know about, is that people will never put the weights back in their proper order, so be prepared to go on a hunt for matching weights. Also, the new floor exercise/stretching sections are always busy, and one of them is contained in milkglass - but with an opening which, if that's the mat you're training on, will make you feel incredibly on display! There is always a Trainer walking around, so if you have any questions about the exercises or if you want a new exercise to spice up your session, they will be able to help. Generally, the staff is very approachable and usually very friendly. I haven't attended any of the classes yet; they've introduced a new system of grabbing a little token which you then hand to the instructor. I have yet to find out how it works.

However, the magnificent building, situated near the University, is misleadingly-titled given that it is actually a fully-functioning leisure centre, with a gym, badminton courts, 5-a-side football pitches, Turkish suite, aerobics studio and a range of classes (some of which are also available to non-members). The pool remains the facility's main selling point and is situated in a truly grand hall lined with lovingly-restored balconies. Measuring 30ft, it is frequented by swimmers of all levels, as well as plenty of kids who love diving from the boards or swinging on the travelling rings and trapeze ropes. With the bar having recently had a lick of paint as well, the Western is an all-encompassing venue which many of the members consider to be a second home. For me, it'd probably turn into 600 quid a year for two games of 5s, but for the more dedicated among you, definitely worth checking out.

Note the pool is 30 yards so a length will take you a bit longer than expected. To other coach type people, climbing the stairs up to the trapeze platform gives you an excellent alternative angle from which to watch people swim - best tip from last week!
