I read some fairly recent reviews that were not encouraging. I took a chance and used the moving services of Grace. I couldn't have been happier with John, the estimator, and both Caleb and the 'other' John. It was a miserable, rainy, long day. They worked non-stop from 8:30 until 5:30 with no breaks. We use Grace Movers to move from Jamestown to Soulsbyville (7 miles away) and we are very disappointed with the way things turned out. The movers were pleasant, but somehow my LG refrigerator got banged up as well as the scratched handle. Our hall Tree has a broken Metal hook, and our very expensive master bedroom mattress and box spring was torn at the corners and dirtied from the move. I spoke to the owner Sally, and was told to e-mail her the pictures which I did. She has never replied back nor returned my phone calls. It's been25 days since our move and I cannot get them to return my e-mails or calls. read more

The company sent a person out before the move to give me a quote and he reviewed all the options and charges with me. Just the facts, ma'am and sir: Barry McClean, the owner of Sonora Moving, did not tell his crew about the specifics of the destination site or give them directions. I had to provide them with Google maps and pictures of the site. -Sonora Moving did not provide the proper equipment to make the move to a hillside site with limited vehicular access. The driver attempted to make it up the hill in a truck 10 feet larger than the posted size limit. When he got stuck, he started knocking on doors at 7:30 on a Saturday morning to try to get the neighbors to move their cars. The police were called. -We had to rent, on our own and at additional expense, a U-Haul truck to shuttle our belongings up the hill to the house, as well as hire additional hourly labor to accomplish the move. -Although Barry had "guaranteed" a price, he charged an additional $95 an hour for both days, threatening to put our belongings in storage if we did not agree to his terms. -Sonora Moving charged us about double its guaranteed price, and we had to hire additional labor and rent additional equipment on our own. -Furniture pads were not used; there were many nicks and scratches on our furniture. -We have made many moves because of my husband's career, including 3 cross-country relocations. Sonora Moving is the worst moving company in our experience, appallingly unprofessional and so bad as to be beyond comparison read more

We had a difficult move to try and organize. We were downsizing to a 1200 sq. ft condo in Pacific Grove,Ca, from our 2700 sq. Ft family home in Sonora,Ca, and we only had a limited amount of time that we were going to be able to be in Sonora to get the move done. We called numerous moving companies in Sonora and explained our challenges; of needing about 1/3 of the content of our family home to be transported to Pacific Grove, about 1/3 of our furniture to go to various charities in the SONORA area, and then of course, the inevitable amount of stuff that would need taken to the dump. GRACE MOVING in SONORA certainly gave us a great first impression! Sally was our first, and continuing contact on the phone. She was consistently friendly, helpful and creative in assisting us to find solutions to the specific challenges of our move. Then, on the day of the move, Chaz and John showed up at the appointed time. They were incredibly hard working people with great, friendly personalities. Unbelievably to me, we were able to get everything we needed accomplished in one day, and became fast friends in the meantime. The price they charged us was more than fair, everything arrived at our condo in perfect shape, and we will always recommend anyone who needs a moving company in or near Sonora, Ca, to use GRACE MOVING. They are not only extremely professional and friendly, their prices were competitive (or better) than what we were quoted from other moving companies who didn't seem nearly as interested in helping us complete our move successfully. I am a thrilled and completely satisfied customer. We are moving from Cold Springs to Twain Harte. After selling our Cold Springs cabin, family circumstances made it necessary to delay the actual move until about a week before escrow close. Panic set in and I called Sonora Moving and Affordable Moving -- the only two movers in Sonora. Barry at Sonora Moving called me back the same day. He reassured me that they could do the job (I called on Monday and needed them there 3 days later. He asked me what we needed to move and said they could be ready at 9:00 am. He didn't need to give me an estimate because the rates are $90 per hour for 2 men and a 26 ft moving van. The guys, Don and Shane, showed up at 8:30 and went to work. We were still packing! They asked what needed to be moved, and it was clear they listened to the answers. They were polite, friendly, and yet wasted no time. They parked in a very smart place to minimize walking, and that made them more productive. They were careful and caring. Both are real pros at what they do. When they were finished, I told them where they were going, where the key was, and that we would see them there later. We needed to finish our work at the cabin so that we would not have to come back up the hill. We are going to have new carpet installed, so Don and Shane were asked not to put anything on the carpet. They listened and proceeded to put boxes and furniture together in the uncarpeted areas like a giant 3-D puzzle. It was amazing. I was a bit concerned about the bad Yelp review I read, until I realized it was over 5 years old. These guys deserve to have all the business in Sonora -- we couldn't be more happy. read more

ZERO STARS. Slow, ended up having to pay for an extra hour. Before that, their boss called and demanded to speak to us, telling us that we "actually" booked two movers for four hours, when in reality, we booked three movers for six hours and that is who arrived. Three movers. She pressured ya over and over to give her more money until she finally gave up and said "we'll honor that you booked three movers for six hours" the movers themselves were friendly but careless. They refused to move our couch into our home due to it "being too wide" even after we measured the wall and couch and found there was four inches of clearance. On top of that, they ruined my mattress. It was a very expensive three layered posture-pedic mattress. It arrived completely misaligned. I was handed a knife by one of the movers and had to cut open the mattress cover and realign it layer by layer, covering my carpet in little rubber pieces from the inside of the mattress. We asked them specifically to bring in the furniture before the boxes so we could unpack more easily. This was not done. All of the boxes were labeled specifically for rooms in the house and they were put wherever. Bathroom boxes in the kitchen, master bedroom boxes in the living room. A $40 bathroom set was carelessly lost. I retraced my steps. It was not at our old home, nowhere in our new home. Just POOF. Gone. The bottom of our fridge is broken. My father herniated himself due to trying to move our couch on his own. Needless to say, it was a shit show from beginning to end. I blame the boss for calling her employees in the middle of a job to try and con us out of our money. VERY unprofessional and rude of her. Now we have damaged furniture, a lost box, and an injury. We'd have been better off moving everything ourselves. read more

Don't use them!!!!!! Can't complain enough. For nearly $5,000.00 to move 45 miles away, we were supposed to have 2 trucks and 5 movers. They came with 1 truck and 3 guys. They didn't even know this until the truck became filled up. Two guys got dropped off back at the yard to p/u another truck while the full one went on to our new home and storage facility. Boxes were marked which to go to where. Several boxes were put into storage that were our cookware, dinnerware and flatware. We had nothing to cook with for 3 weeks with a lot of unpacking to do and when we went back to the storage (which was filled to the brim) to move boxes to find the missing kitchen things. I found furniture that was supposed to be wrapped in plastic laying on its top not wrapped and when I turned it over my bed post was all scrapped up. Our kitchen table arrived at the house missing one leg and I've found other gouges in other pieces. I have no idea how much more is damaged that I haven't been able to get to. On top of it, the second truck didn't arrive to the new house until 7:30 and didn't get everything unloaded until 9:00 pm (they started at 8:00 am). Some things are just missing from desks. We made about 10 pickup truck loads ourselves before they showed up including a 3-car garage which they never had to touch. I have no idea how this mess would have been accomplished if they had to have had to do it as well. No way would have two trucks been enough. They guys were nice enough, but this company definitely did not have their act together, and at the cost of our stuff and frustration. We did not end up paying the full amount, as we wouldn't have, but still caused a lot of stress and grief and we won't know the full extent of damage to our property until we unload the storage unit. I'm furious at the whole experience and absolutely will be filing claims, maybe more, against them!!!! read more

Grace Moving was very professional, polite, conscientious, and effective. The estimator went through the house with me and discussed everything, gave us State required information, and explained all thoroughly. The office staff was responsive, and helpful. The move took place amidst last-minute chaos (ours, not theirs!) but they were really nice about it all and pulled it off. The young men doing the heavy lifting were polite and seemed well-trained. The work-leader was pleasant and efficient. We were very pleased with their service, and would recommend them to anyone in their service area. read more

My husband and I drove from the Bay Area on a Saturday to a town in Calaveras county on Labor Day weekend to meet with Barry. Normally, we would not venture out on such a high traffic weekend but the timing of our move was critical and we had to move out of this vacation home in 2 weeks. Our appointment to meet Barry was scheduled for noon. He called us at 12:11 to tell us he wasn't coming, that he realized on Friday that he needed to reapply for a permit to move people out of state. We were speechless. Why didn't he call us on Friday when he realized that he couldn't' drive our belongings across the state line and save us from making an 8 hour round trip commute in bumper to bumper traffic? And, of course, we had to make another return drive to Caleveras county mid-week to meet with another moving company. I'd give him no stars if I could. read more
