Trevor kept great contact, made every possible accommodation possible, answered every question and made the planning process very painless with an abundance of gentility during our family's hour of grief. We have been in Thomas McAfee many times over the years for services outside of the family as well and every arrangement is perfectly handled. The Thomas McAfee name is truly synonymous with funeral planning in the area and I would recommend their services to anyone in need. Fast forward to yesterday, when I brought in our family guest book for two small corrections. While I was expecting to drop it off and pick it up at a later date, Trevor and Vicky worked hard to have the changes made same-day which was highly appreciated. The McAfee name speaks for itself and they are truly the best I have seen in town. A Wonderful Experience in a Time of Mourning…read more My apologies for the long review, but the company deserves a good and long one. If there was ever a time for things to go right, it was my, dreaded, upcoming interaction with the "Bereavement Extortion Industry", which I have, unfortunately, dealt with in the past. My experience with Rod, owner of E.L. Collins funeral home, was the opposite of what I expected. My initial call to this company was met by a voice that was more interested in my needs and not their sales goals. I explained my apprehension and disdain for the funeral home industry to Rod, and about 30 seconds into our conversation I realized I wasn't dealing with high pressure sales accompanying a 3-page funeral options menu, and knew i found what I was looking for; a not-over-the top cremation process for my 93 yr. old father, without the funeral home visitation. Not having a fancy new building, with slick salespeople, made me initially believe I'd arrived at the wrong place. My ill father had been residing with me in Spartanburg for close to three years, but his burial site was in Charleston, S.C. Rod said that was not a problem. Since I needed a licenced funeral home to open the ground to place my father's remains, Rod said he would be glad to drive to Charleston to be present at my father's graveside service. I gladly paid him a nominal fee for this, as I never considered the requirement from the State to hire a licenced entity to access the burial vault. My option was to hire a Charleston-local company to do it, and it's expensive when you plan the funeral yourself and they don't get to extort a tidy sum for their other bereavement extortion services. I paid for a very affordable cremation, but this is what E.L. Collins (Rod) provided with that service. He guided me with writing my brief obituary, which was my father's wish. He helped me pick out the best picture and edited it for me, and submitted to both Upstate, SC and Charleston, SC newspapers (online also). As customary, he made made arrangements for me to obtain death certificates to take care of my father's affairs. He also made arrangements for a DOD-approved U.S. flag to be presented to me at my the funeral service for my father's military service. Then he drove 220 miles to be present for the burial. Organizing a funeral, without the full service of a funeral home may border on overwhelming, but I assure you it takes the business feel away from a funeral, and brings a more family feel to the process, and also, surprisingly, removed the dread cloud away from the entire process that was positively commented on by all of my family that attended. It became a celebration of my father's life versus a mournful event. If you are looking for a funeral home that isn't try to sell you something you don't need and extort you during your time of grieving, is very compassionate, helpful, and understanding, then E.L Collins Funeral Home is who you need to contact. To top it all off, Rod Collins is a wonderful person.

They sought out the immediate family members (even those of us from out of town) during the services and viewing and made sure to introduce themselves and help guide us through the custom of receiving friends and family, seeking grief counseling services if needed, and attending to any special requests we had. They went above and beyond and were found to be a strange comfort to us during an intensely difficult time. They conducted themselves professionally and with sympathy for our loss. At my Uncles funeral in Georgia a few months ago - they misspelled my uncles name and we pallbearers received no instruction from the staff. It was a disaster. We waited 2 days for his return, they didnt have the casket she wanted so he tried to talk us into something else and finally ordered the original she wanted, they wanted to put off embalming her because her sister insisted on seeing her first but wouldn't show up. The visitation was no better. The family was separated on each end of my mother and there was no one attending to our needs. My nephew was showing visitors where to enter, where the book was located, and where the bathrooms were. The funeral was postponed because the grave had flooded and we had to wait almost a week for her burial. The funeral procession was not organised. We just fell in line and followed the family car. We were rushed from the cemetery as they started the burial. My sisters were hurried into the family car and driven away. No one from the cemetery came out to speak with us. My sister had to ask for the book and thank you cards. Everything was so unprofessional. I felt that because they all knew my mothers sister, she dislikes us, they were trying to follow her direction. We only bury our loved ones once. We deserve respect and dignity during this time.

My Father, who is 95 was so impressed by the professional way everything was handled from beginning to end. My Father was once the District Plant Manager for Timken, and so he is very detail oriented. My Mother Passed July of 2025 in a skilled nursing facility, and when the kind men came to get her at 4:00 am dressed respectfully in suits they gave us time to say our goodbyes. The following day my Father and Brother were able to select all the things we needed as a family to make a lovely celebration of Life. The Funeral Home is beautiful and we were able to have a tribute playing on a screen with 80 pictures and music. The organist who also has an amazing voice did an outstanding job. We were allowed to use tables in the different areas to display pictures and memorabilia to celebrate Mom's life. Everything went beautifully and on schedule. There was plenty of parking for our guests, clean bathrooms, kleenex and sanitizers in every room for the guests. All of the kind folks there listened to our needs and carried everything out to perfection. We will continue to use Woods in our family and highly recommend it to anyone in search of a Funeral Home.
