She looks forward to every class, is growing more patient and disciplined. Grand Master Pak and his daughter Ah Young both teach. Master Pak has high level black belts in multiple arts, as well does Ah Young. They are both very humble, kind, and patient. There students respect and adore them for good reason. I could not disagree more with the anonymous poster who said that this school is a money making scheme, nor is it "a belt factory". I've seen children and people in my own class not advance when they could not pass a test. Also, Ah Young is over the children and Master Pak comes to help when he is needed for the sheer volume of students or chasm between belts in a given class. A note about the chairs. These are tough, Korean people, who care deeply for their art. They devote the majority of the space to students and a small space to an office and chairs. There is honestly no more room for chairs and I have no problem sitting on a floor or standing. I've seen children grow confident and strong here. I've seen friendships made, and a family environment in place before I arrived. The family of students in my class has welcomed me in, stepped in to help me learn, and invited me to dinner and parties. But above all the deep respect that the 8:00pm students have for their teacher is incredible. They all wait on the store front for him to leave. They wait, then bow and honor him as he washes goodbye. His students truly love him and I am proud to be a part of something so great and genuine.

I started because I wanted to do something else other than going to the gym. The adult TKD class is 1hr on Mon and Wed. All belt levels are in one class. I was a little concerned with this at first, but there are alot of black belts to help out, and Master Pak gives ample attention to beginners when needed. I also love that Master Pak makes himself available on Saturdays for a couple of hours if you want extra practice or training. The sparring class on Thursday is open to everyone, and you need gear/protection to participate. This class is useful, but I don't always go out of my way to attend. The hapkido class is after TKD; I have been to a couple, but I feel I'm not ready for that. I usually watch the kids' class if I come in early. There is always one or two other instructors (senior students) helping out. It's great because Master Pak instills discipline and respect, and it really shows through the kids. In other words, if I had children, they would definitely be in that class. Overall, if you're serious about learning a martial art, and want to learn from an extremely high caliber Master, then UMAEC is for you.

Keep reading for my full experience below. _________________ I've been training at Martial Athletes for about six weeks, attending striking with Coach Cannon, Jiu-Jitsu with Coach Freddy, and HIIT with Coach Maria. From day one, the gym has been welcoming, encouraging, and energizing. I'm a woman in my 40s with a background in weightlifting and CrossFit-style sports, and I was looking for a new challenge to get back to the fitness and confidence I once had. That mindset has helped me dive into these classes. These classes are challenging and real combat sports, not just cardio boxing. Don't let that be intimidating! Just something to keep in mind. Aside from watching Pride and UFC with my husband, I had virtually no martial arts experience before joining. Six weeks is still a short time in a martial arts gym, and my skill level definitely shows. It can be frustrating at times, but I keep showing up, and little by little, I'm improving. The coaches are incredible. They make you feel welcome no matter your skill level. They won't sugarcoat your abilities, but their feedback always comes from a place of honesty, patience, and kindness. The community is amazing, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping you grow. Walking into the gym can feel intimidating at first, but by week three you will be hooked. You might wonder, if I'm still learning and not very good, what's the point? Here's a story. I love hiking, but I used to constantly look down, never fully trusting myself on the trail. On Christmas Eve, after just five weeks in class, I went for a long hike and found myself looking up, confident, and trusting my body and my feet. I was able to enjoy the golden hour sunset and take in the horizon instead of staring at the trail beneath me. I recently ran a full mile, something that may not sound impressive, but I did it without pain. Unlike weightlifting, my training here strengthens my joints and ligaments along with my muscles, so I don't experience the usual aches. Again, I ran with my head up, chasing the horizon instead of watching my feet. Striking and BJJ demand focus. You have to pay attention, follow your opponent, and anticipate what's coming next. This practice has also improved my active listening at home and at work. I thought I was a good listener before, but now I can tell I'm much more present. Coach Cannon, Coach Freddy, and Coach Maria, you are patient, skilled, and inspiring. I can't say enough about the gym and its community.

We were introduced to Coach Colin through a friend as he was just opening Hutto BJJ. He was extremely flexible and met our weekend schedule needs. We immediately liked him for his communication style, diverse martial arts knowledge, and is great with kids. We recently had another private...our son is now 9, and coach is now a Professor! I think its going to be our thing to book a private before tournaments. He goes through as many topics and scenarios as you can handle. Its like cramming before a test and I think its invaluable and affordable! As a side note: My 2yo was going nuts with his play setup. She also liked him instantly. Unsafe training, bad mats, and poor environment I walked in fine and left injured…read more I decided to try out this gym because it's close to my house. From the moment I first walked in to ask about a free trial, the atmosphere felt uncomfortable everyone looked at me like I was some kind of intruder instead of a potential new student. No one greeted me or tried to make me feel welcome. That should've been the first red flag. During training, things went from awkward to dangerous. Someone decided to pull on my heel extremely hard not even applying a proper inside heel hook or any legitimate control and I felt a pop in my knee. I immediately knew something was wrong. That one careless move left me with internal damage in my left knee. I can barely move it now and can't afford the medical costs to fix it. It's been painful physically and mentally because I came here just to learn and have a good experience. On top of that, the mats were terrible. They had almost no grip super slippery even when dry. It's the kind of surface where you can slide around during drilling or sparring, which makes it way easier to get hurt. A gym that takes safety seriously would invest in proper mats like Fuji or Zebra mats, not the cheap ones that feel like plastic flooring. I'm not posting this out of anger I just want to give people an honest warning. The environment here doesn't feel controlled, and safety clearly isn't a priority. If you're looking for a competitive but respectful place to train, I strongly suggest going somewhere else. I train at Kingsway, and it's a night and day difference still very intense and competitive, but everything is structured, the mats are safe, and people actually look out for each other. That's how a real gym should operate.

The Professor/Black belt is incredibly knowledgeable and made me feel very welcome. The Jiu-Jitsu classes are a great conditioning workout as well as Self Defense classes that are very practical for anyone! My wife loves it because the Professor will have Self Defense classes for only women. If you want to join a gym that all the classes are 100% instructed by a Black Belt, you need to try Soul Fighters Georgetown. I love the family atmosphere here and can't wait to get both of my sons into Jiu-Jitsu with me! I'm looking forward to my family growing with Soul Fighters Georgetown!
