Such a positive and welcoming place to Train BJJ. My 4yr old daughter has been training for about 8months. We have noticed huge improvement in her confidence. It's a great program for kids , the kids really progress much faster than I expected and I have my 9 year old son in the program and I'm getting my 6 year old in the program in a couple weeks as well. I really enjoy watching the kids train and seeing the levels of skills, some of the little girls in there are freaking dangerous too! It seems like they pick it up faster than the boys and I really. I am so glad I brought my boys here. The instructors manage the children very very well and they all get the attention they need. This place has so much potential. Unfortunately the owner doesn't care about the establishment and is super greedy. The classes are over crowded and yet they still take in more students. There is not enough coaches to give you the quality time for instruction. The place is worn down. It took them years to fix the mats and seat cushions. Someone had to donate the glue so they would fix the mats. Professor Phil and Coach Alex are great instructors. They do the best with what they have but unfortunately they are limited because they are not the owners of the establishment. With all the money the owner pulls in, they should pay their coaches a living wage so they don't have to work multiple jobs. While still being at the academy all hours of the day to keep it going. Been training here for a few years and have never met the owner. read more

Gracie Barra is the place! Started coming here a little over two years ago with my son. They have a solid kids program. Professor Eric, Professor Phil, Coach Alex and other coaches are great with kids. Relationship is built and time is invested in the development of their training and personal growth. The adults program is equally great. I've developed some great friendships and real solid bonds. I never did martial arts growing up and was concerned about the ego/tough guy environment but it's not an issue at all here. The higher the belt and the more experienced the person is, the more humble they are. Most higher belts will teach you as you go along. Brought our 5 year old son to try Jiu Jitsu in November 2021. We were recommended through a friend. Gracie Barra offered a 1 week trial for free, no catch. For his age group it was either a M/W and Sat class or T/Th and Sat class. He loved it, so we signed up! The coaches are patient and attentive with the kids. And stern when needed. My child has learned a lot in the few months we have been there. His focus has improved a lot as well. They were also very kind and accommodating when we needed to take a break in January. I've had an overall excellent experience here at Gracie Barra Whittier, Both professor Phil and Coach Alex are very welcoming and patient with all students who have some experience to some with no experience. My kids recently did a trial at this jujitsu place. My son got hurt during the first trial class. He had a left clavicle fracture as a result. I hope the instructors did a better job during this trial. My son had no experience and when he was partnered with another kid who had experience, they didn't inform the other kid to go easy on my son who had no idea what was going on. They offer free trial class but then they dont really monitor the kind of exercises given to new students. Such poor training read more

They don't teach what they should teach the class the fundamentals ! I was very disappointed as they put all of the new kids with the advance older kids and not worth the time to be there for one hour having to demonstrate and show the kids what to do they should separate the children with an instructor so this way the other children don't get bored having to waste their time and sit there till an instructor goes and helps other children I wish this place was more organized but it's not they need more people to help teach the children so that everyone gets the results they are looking for. They get a-lot of new kids and the kids have no experience and don't know what they're doing I highly recommend that they separate these children and get an instructor to help so this way the other children could get more advance. I really feel it's a waste of time here. To sit around and wait for an instructor is a waste of time as there is only 2 guys helping 25 kids ! IMPOSSIBLE NO GOOD RESULTS ! Also just want to let you know be careful with ANDREW one of the instructors he threatens my son to do push-ups when he asks a question he doesn't answer him also ANDREW pick and choose who he wants to help I have never seen anybody do push-ups but my son told me that he has threaten him during team practice! ANDREW DOESN'T BELONG IN A PLACE LIKE THIS ! He should be teaching the kids not threatening the kids! He BULLYING MY SON ! read more

I brought my son here and he liked it, I called and left a message to sign my son up and I got a call back the same day!! I thought this place was on it. But then I moved further out during September from Whittier and my son started school. I forgot to cancel the membership because they take the money out of your account every month. I called them in October and no one answered but never got a call back. I tried again in November. Nothing still. In December they were still charging the $125 a month for membership so I tried their social medias and finally a response back that someone would call me back! Cool I thought. Alex called me and said that he would stop the payments from my card and that he would call me back about returning my money since September. Come end of December and early January, I called and texted as he requested if i did not hear from him. What happened?? Come the 15th of January. My card was charged again. So I reached out the only way I was getting a response, Instagram. Alex called me back the same day saying he would only refund January payment because I did not cancel within the 60 day period on the contract you sign. Why was this not told to me???? I also got a call from Eric, he tried to make me happy with 2 months of payments returned...This place is ridiculous. To top it off, I already wrote a review about all this and they deleted it. The staff here is amazing. The teachers are great and they take the time needed with the kids that might need a little extra work (like my son). My daughter originally didn't want to start Jiu Jitsu, but after watching my son she changed her mind and I'm so happy because it's giving her the confidence she was needing. 5 stars is not enough! 10 is more like it. My 6 year son started taking classes here 1 month ago using the trial offer. I'd been looking for a sport for him to participate in and am so glad I found Gracie Barra Jujitsu. He is a strong personality and he attracts great people, but also kids who have really deep problems and can be considered bullies. I wanted to give him skills to defend himself without causing him drama with teachers at school. I also wanted him to learn how to deescalate and shake off conflict with a goodwill gesture like a handshake or fist bump. Gracie Barra Whittier caught my eye on Whittier Blvd and I googled to see what it was all about. I was interested because they teach kids technique, self defense, but also respect and responsibility. My son can be cocky, but the coaches let them build confidence while instilling a humble attitude in the kids. Coach Eric and Coach Phil are AWESOME. They command respect in the most subtle way, but the kids really respond. They let the kids win some matches and when they lose, give them a sign like a fist bump or handshake to square the student's feelings up. I've also noticed that when my son gets cocky or over confident, the coaches make sure to check that behavior through natural consequences like getting "out" in a game, or losing a sparring match. I LOVE this! Additionally, the coaches communicate with parents with eye contact and thumbs up/down gestures that the kids can't see. Kids can be manipulative, but with good communication between coaches and parents, that is minimized. As an elementary teacher myself, I know the fine psychological line we walk to build kids' self esteem while keeping them humble and respectful of authority. This program is so much more than sport...it's self esteem, self defense, character education, respect of authority, and it's fun! (On a side note, they play a game at the end of the younger kids level where the coaches throw a large red yoga ball at the students and the kids try not to get hit. It's HILARIOUS!) From my kid's perspective, he absolutely LOVES it. He asks everyday... "Is today Gracie Barra?" I absolutely hate when I have to say no. So, 5 stars from a 6 year old too. :) Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the administrative side of the program. The lady(I need to find out her name) at the desk is so attentive and kind. She answers all questions efficiently and helps parents learn the ropes. And the facility is super clean, simple, organized, and neat. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PROGRAM. My review is overdue for this Gracie Barra location , definitely a great experience. It was my first time trying to learn something out of my comfort zone and I learned a lot in just a few of the classes I attended. The instructors at this location treat everyone equally , I was very nervous about being the only female at this location specially being a beginner. I can only imagine how great their kids program is. It's a very spacious indoor location, they have three dressing rooms and there is parking . It was a bit far for me which was the reason I stopped going. But I definitely recommend this place !! I'd like to update and add that my daughter and two brothers did try out the kids jiu jitsu. Professor Bruno is so great with the kids, they are always so excited to see him and makes learning so easy and fun for the little ones.
