Welcome to Gran Agave... a colorful, cozy Mexican restaurant at Providence and Bloomingdale, where Brandon melts into Riverview. I've been here before with friends a few times, years ago but somehow never wrote a review and hadn't been back. It was time to fix both of those problems. . I stopped in for lunch on a Monday and had my pick of spots in the large, festive- rustic dining room. There are tables and booths aplenty-along with tall stools at the large bar. They bring you a generous basket of chips and salsa right away. The first round is free-they charge after that. The chips are usually fresh and crisp. To me, the salsa needs more heat or spices-but don't go by me-I have tomato issues. My server arrived soon and was so sweet when handling my questions. She helped me make good ordering decisions and also checked on me often, but didn't hover. I went with one of the lunch specials, which was a good deal. I had the Speedy Gonzalez: a beef taco, beef enchilada verde and rice (you could have also chosen beans). It's tasty and filling-and goes down great with those aforementioned skinny margs. I ordered the cheese dip and a side of flour tortillas to dip in it. I just can't resist a bowl of cheese. All this merriment on a Monday afternoon? Si!!! The menu is big-and has echos of the Vallarta's restaurants here in the Bay Area. I'm wondering if it's a sister restaurant. It's in a strip mall, with some parking in front and maybe more in back. There's outdoor seating-and I know they used to have mariachis on certain nights-and people would dance. I should find out if that's still the case. I love mariachis even more than a bowl of cheese. Gran Agave has been here a long time. I think it has a strong local following-and I need to become a regular. read more

We visited Gran Agave while in town visiting family and chose the restaurant based on the strong reviews we saw online. We had a group of nine for a family dinner and waited about an hour for a table, which was understandable for a larger party. Once seated, however, the service was unfortunately very slow. It took about 15-20 minutes just to receive our drinks (seven waters and two margaritas), and our food took roughly an hour to arrive at the table. The restaurant didn't appear to be overly busy, so the long wait times were a bit confusing. Because gratuity was automatically included, it felt like our server may not have been as attentive as expected. The prices were also on the higher side, which made the slow service even more disappointing. That said, I do want to mention that the food itself was very good, which was definitely the highlight of the experience. Overall, while we enjoyed the meal, the customer service left a lot to be desired. I'd consider returning in the future, but only if the service improves. read more

Insane whisky collection. Literally the best whisky collection I've seen outside of a legit cocktail bar. It blew my mind to see multiple variations of Blanton's. That alone should set the tone for you. The food is definitely Americanized, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I have had better nachos so I'm probably not going to order that again. If you are craving Mexican food and would like a great Marg. Head to the Grand Agave. Besides the great service, Live music and just a great Vibe, The Special Chimmy is the way togo. I had mine with shrimp and would highly recommend. The family of 6 All agreed, it was outstanding. and the live music made it really fun. All of the food was excellent. Celebrating Father's Day today we drove up from Bradenton for some good authentic Mexican food and great hospitality. We do recommend eating at the restaurant. There were four of us there and our waitress did a great job of making sure we were taken care of. The restaurant was very busy so she was staying busy as well. Our table had nachos, tacos, Carne Asada and all the accompanying side dishes. We asked for especially hot sauce to go with the chips and the waitress did not disappoint. It arrived and was very hot very flavorful and went well with everything we had ordered for lunch. We had Modelo draft beer and several different types of margaritas that were all very good. We got to briefly talk to the owner while we were looking at some of his collection of products. He was very engaging extremely nice and wished us a happy Father's Day before we left. read more

Good food at Gran Agave! It was very busy on a Friday night when we went, and the wait for a table was about 30 minutes, but we enjoyed a huge, delicious margarita while waiting. The enchiladas were tasty, though they didn't come with rice and beans, so I ordered those on the side. They also have mariachis walking around playing music, which was a fun touch. I. Love. This. Restaurant! I have been trying to find my go to spot in Riverview and this is it. The service is great. The staff is kind and they always have a smile on their faces. My mom and I went Saturday night and they had a singer in the restaurant. I think they may have been celebrating a birthday, but it was just so nice and it's really a hidden gem. The food portions, PLEASE. Arrive hungry. You'll leave full. We had the chicken and beef fajitas for two and it was amazing. I was so full by time we left. The chicken and beef is so flavorful I literally was eating the meat by itself. The drinks are a little pricey for what I was expecting but it's worth it! Ambiance is nice as well. They have an EXTENSIVE tequila and bourbon list as well. If you're a tequila aficionado like I am. This will be my go to spot from now on. read more

I went to Gran Agave for lunch and was impressed by how many different tequila brands they have all around the restaurant--seems like a fun spot for happy hour. We ordered the steak fajitas for two and the beef flautas. The fajitas were tasty and a good deal for two people. But the flautas were disappointing--dry and had no flavor. I wish I hadn't ordered them. The service was friendly and attentive, which made the experience better. Overall, I had a good time, but I hope the chef updates the beef flautas recipe. read more

It took a while to be sat even though the restaurant wasn't busy, the host kept telling us they had to move some tables together and then disappear to the back. After we got sat the server was not very attentive either, we had to ask others for service. Casual ambiance for weekday happy hour. The food was alright, rice and beans could have been seasoned more. Steak was cooked to medium and tender. Flour tortillas seemed stale and hard though. I Don't like leaving reviews but this Restaurants food and service are terrible, I ate lunch here with my Family, The Service was horrible Not that many people in the restaurant at the time we went in. It took them 20 minutes just to get us water, 30 minutes after that was when the food arrived . I ordered the Pollo Asado which had no flavor I tasted bland the chicken was dry and over cooked , my son also had the same dish and it was the same result. My wife ordered the Fajita salad and it was also bland white lettuce and soggy. I was only able to eat half the meal I told the waiter that the dish was not what I expected and it did not have any taste to it. The refried beans tasted like they came out of a can the lettuce was pale not green and the guacamole tasted old. the waiter took my plate looked at me and said sorry and walked away. When he came back with the bill he just placed it on the table and we never saw him again, I had to go to the bar to pay the bill. This is not a cheap place to eat I expected a good quality meal for the price they are charging. I have no idea why this place isn't rated higher. The dining area is absolutely adorable and the service is incredibly efficient. My margarita (by all accounts made with actual strawberries) was on the table by the time I read the first page and the salsa and chips were placed with the menus and flatware. The salsa was nice and thin, but not watery, and had a great flavor profile. I would absolutely consider it mild but it was "perfectly spiced" for my husband. We shared the molcajete and it was fantastic... we did the "for one" and there is another full meal here. If you are a spicy person, you may want to get some of the homemade sauce to bring it up a bit. It had wonderful, balanced, and rich flavor but I will heat it up a little next time. The restaurant was extremely dead however it took them 20 minutes to seat us as we waited by the door and then were told to have a seat and not stand in the way. As you can see here in the picture the restaurant was very empty. Once finally seated we were told to scan a QR code for the menu. The only margaritas on the menu were house margarita and skinny. The margarita tasted like it came straight out of a premixed bottle. The restaurant decorations were pretty and inviting but I understand why it was not busy. In town visiting and everyone told me I had to check out Gran Agave. It was a miss! Came in today at 5:15, told it would be 35 minutes, that's fine. Seated at 5:40, drink and food order (Carne asada "medium rare", light guacamole, no beans) taken immediately. Waitress was polite, came by at the 30 minute mark and apologized for the food being late, brought more chips and salsa. Food finally arrived after waiting 45 minutes after ordering. The steak came "well done" no guacamole. At this point of taking so long, we just wanted to leave, that steak was NOT worth $36.99. Will not be back. read more

My First and Last time there!! The Bartender..... totally ignored me. 7 mins in a guy came and sat at the bar next to me, he was served right away and got his drink with in 1 min. Gran Agave is a great place to enjoy Mexico foods and spirits. Upon arriving, we were greeted properly, seated and handed a basket of tortillas and chips. The decor is a well-done South American vibe. I enjoyed looking around at all the details. The walls behind the bar and around the restaurant are endowed with Tequila bottles, lamps made from Tequila bottles and design and styles from South American architecture. The tacos and nachos from the menu did not disappoint. I appreciate the corn tortilla option for the tacos and they are what I would call spot on. The nachos come with a covering of beef and queso spread across the tortillas nicely. Ask for some spicy heat and you won't be disappointed. So good! The welcome from the staff is upstanding. We enjoyed our first visit so much, we returned about one week later to enjoy all over again. The Margaritas are light and refreshing; not heavily sweetened or too heavy on the alcohol. The pitcher is the way to go. They do have them on the rocks or frozen. We enjoyed them on the rocks. I would also say that we didn't leave stumbling drunk after the pitcher and appetizers. But, we shared the nachos and were both stuffed. This place is so "Highly Recommended" that I can't wait to go back. read more

The food wasn't well seasoned however the waitress was very attentive and the portion size was very generous. The best part were the margaritas which were huge and delicious! I have been coming to gran agave for awhile now. 1st of all I love the staff which is a reason I kept coming back. They have great lunch options and prices are goood. Obviously over the years things have went up, but to be expected. It is a place you can bring a large group, go alone pr have a little date with someone. Went for lunch on a holiday Monday. It was not crowded, but there were plenty of people dining. We chose lunch options, my friend ordered the steak fajitas and they were quite good. I can't tell you what the other thing is, it was chicken with sour cream and cheese but idk what it was called on the menu. Really anticlimactic. We both had a margarita, which were good. Tuesday night dinner out. We had a fabulous meal here. Started off with the Guacamole Gran Agave. Fresh and super chunky, it was very good. Margarita was delicious - no fake mixer taste. It's as if you have stepped in to a Mexican neighborhood. Our server Sonny was amazing and friendly! We also had an opportunity to chat with the owner who was genuine, generous and all around incredible! We enjoyed learning about the different tequilas, how the best ingredients are used in the making of the menu, and stories about the people who make up the restaurant! The atmosphere is incredible, the decoration is beautiful and it is very pleasant to go out with friends, I ordered a Hawaiian carnitas that tasted delicious and was a fairly large portion, the margarita was delicious and they have a lot of variety of drinks. I've visited Gran Agave over 3 times and I must say you can never go wrong with drinks here! My favorite thing to do is order the monster margarita and share with a friend. The margaritas are so good and do not have the pre-mixed taste -- they're strong and worth the price! The service has also been great each time. They have mariachis on the Fridays from 6pm-9pm which is a nice touch but it does get really loud. It is enjoyable and entertaining but not if you're going to catch up with a friend & trying to have a lot of conversation. The food could use some work as the quality is not the greatest. Stopped by here with a friend after we kept seeing it mentioned on social media. We sat at the bar and ordered a pitcher of margaritas to share. The tell tale factor of a good Mexican restaurant can usually be found in the way they make their margaritas - and that's where Gran Agave gets 5 stars. Not too sweet, packs a punch and great value for the price. The food was also fantastic. They have the usual menu you'd expect from any other Mexican place, but the quality is much better. I had the Chilequiles lunch special (they offer lunch on Saturdays!) and it was awesome. Tons of food. The staff was fantastic - very friendly, willing to help and attentive. First time here and came with a friend who has been waiting to try it. When you walk in it's so spacious with the open ceiling to accommodate the high back wooded base shelves stocked with every tequila imaginable. We were greeted and seated right away. The decor is very pretty and authentic, it's just really cool. Best way to describe. Cool and inviting. Our server arrived quickly, it was after the lunch rush so there were only a handful of other patrons. They insisted brought out chips and some yummy house made salsa. I ordered a bed top chimichanga and my friend ordered a bed burrito. The food came out in a timely manner and looked good. I prefer when food is not salty so i can as my own pink Himalayan salt to taste. I also asked for their housemade hot sauce and that was very good. We enjoyed our meals which were very filling. When did this Restaurant on the recommendation from my wife. We order appetizers and entrée nacho appetizers had too much ground beef in it too much cheese which made the chips. Soggy did not finish. I had the chicken enchilada and my wife had the beef enchilada. both entrées were very good, took some home. The restaurant was dark, not able to see color of the cheese sauce on the appetizers waiters we're always available. Good customer service. Only downfall men's men's bathroom commode not working. Don't know long how long it was not working not a lot of tissue or paper towels to wash your hands. I'm going to go back during the lunchtime to see if it's a little lighter in the restaurant. I'm hoping it was darker for the evening shift because the band played right behind us and maybe that was a mood setting of having it darker in the evening. read more

Blandest food I've had in some time. Ordered a Chile Relleno and was served a bell pepper with cheese and beef. Got the beef taco and the meat tasted like bland ground beef with no flavor whatsoever.
