This place is hectic inside. The service was pretty on point for how busy they were. Very limited seating space with one of the tables being a larger shared dining table. The decor is wood everywhere. Very pmw and even more on par with many other establishments in the area, well the older ones. My breakfast muffin was not so good, but everyone else loved what they had. The 2 slices of turkey i added to my breakfast sandwich was pretty picey and extremly dry and the sanwich overall was pretty dry to eat. It really could have used some mayo and mustard. My pumpkin cream cheese muffin however was delicious. My Americano was good, but the caffeine kick was unexpectedly hit me hard and lasted so so long. I tried a bit of everyone's coffee and I can say theirs was much better than my plain old Americano. The neighborhood is pretty nice with lots of simple goodness. An institution. Everything is good. Their bread is fresh and artisanal. They sell it whole or sliced. Their bakery items are the bomb- cinnamon rolls, scones, cookies, the list goes on and on. Great location in sellwood - there is limited seating so just be prepared to either take it to go or wait for a table! We were so distracted on our last trip to Grand Central Bakery in Sellwood. Not only do the prices keep going up. The quality has spiraled so badly. That all of our pastries were dry, bland, and definitely all over a day old. The servers were busy chatting amongst themselves. Rather than working the line that was out the door on Friday morning. Tables were not busted and wiped down. I am happy to drive a little extra to Ken's Bakery downtown or Little T's in SE. I would not recommend wasting lots of money for poor products and services. read more

Stopped by Grand Central Bakery for some pastries and coffee for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised! My sister lives in the area and said she was a fan of the danishes here so I really wanted to try them! We came pretty early like around 8am and they were already out of one of their pastry options! We got one regular danish and one of the fruit danishes and both were very good. It was the right amount of sweetness and tartness. The gal at the counter was really friendly. I'm all about customer experience and for a first timer the team member Cierra wasn't friendly at all. Our interaction was more of just a transaction. We wanted pastries to take home and when we asked for 10 croissants and they only had 6 she straight up just says "that's all we have". Come on at 1030 in the morning that's all you have? Great little local bakery. We enjoyed walking here to this shop. It is cute and quaint. They offer plenty of outdoor dinning for customers, which I appreciated. The baked goods are a little pricier than normal places. A cookie was like $3 something. We ended up buying their French baguette. It was not too expensive. I just thought the baguette was a little over baked. The exterior was too hard and hurt my teeth. I've had French baguettes before at other bakeries in the U.S. and in France. I never had the baguette that hard on the outside where it hurt my teeth to chew. Anyways, cute bakery. I enjoyed coming here. read more

I had a Veggie Grinder sandwich to go, and were it not for one glaring flaw, this would be a 5-star review. This sandwich is loaded with flavor, thanks to a generous helping of sweet onions and pickled peppers. Richness comes from avocado and havarti cheese. It would all blend together marvelously, were it not for the bread -- a very hard seeded banquette. While the bread does taste good, it is so tough that it's almost impenetrable, even with good chompers. The end result is chunks of avocado and pepper squirting out the sides of the sandwich from the pressure of biting (and the bread not giving). Fix the bread, and that's a 5-star veggie sandwich. read more

Sometimes restaurants be that way, but when I look over to the BOH, I see a sandwich handler just standing over a half made meal, addressing their coworker about the tik toks and Leavenworth. Every time I go here, I remember why I never go here. If you just order one sandwich and there's only two or three people in the entire restaurant it always takes them 25 minutes to get your sandwich ready. I have no idea why this restaurant is the slowest in the city. I only go here about once a year because of that. I would go more often if they fixed it. read more

Oh. My. God. This will quickly become one of our favorite places in the neighborhood. The staff was incredibly friendly and greeted us right away. The food, let me tell you, was exceptional. I had the cheddar egg biscuit and it simply started my day off perfectly. There isn't a lot to it and it isn't served with anything on the side but it is the simplicity that allows you to enjoy it. The bakery case was filled with an eye-popping selection of goodies. I can't wait to get back there and try as many things as possible. This is going to be very dangerous. read more

I've had plenty of sandwiches from GCB over the years but took a year + long sabbatical because of COVID. I still purchased pastries and plenty of coffee but my husband always discouraged me from spending so much on a sandwich. I got a raise! So today I broke the sabbatical and ordered 2 turkey chutney sandwiches ($20.+ for just the sandwich-no chips-no drink) and was so looking forward to our lunch! Giddy! *WOMP WOMP WOMP* I was so sadly disappointed that since or maybe because of COVID, the sandwich didn't have any of the GCB zip, zap and zoom that I had fallen in love with over the years. Barely any turkey, a tiny smidge of chutney, one square of cheese and literally one sheet of lettuce. A kindergartner could make a better sandwich. These were not $20.+ sandwiches! They were flat, bland and bleh. Husband and I were trying to figure out what happened. 1. New person-not trained correctly? 2. Business struggling and trying to cut costs? 3. Sandwich maker unhappy? 4. Pre-schooler making sandwiches? I'm hoping that this was just a one off. I'm hoping it was a temporary mishap. (It happens!) I'm going to give it another try soon and will follow up here. I've always been a huge fan of GCB and have brought them a lot of business. I'm not throwing in the towel on this one incident. This place is pretty consistent, and you can count on good coffee, excellent fresh baked bread and pastries, and amazing breakfast sandwiches. (Get the breakfast croissant with egg, cheese, and Mama Lil's peppers!) I haven't had much of the lunch menu yet, but plan to work my way through it. It gets very busy, and sometimes while walking my dog I wish I could order something to go, but it's proven to be too difficult. The dog can't come in, the online ordering hasn't worked when I've tried, and it's impossible to get anyone's attention through that little walk-up window. I love this bakery because this is where my run with my friends end. This is the finish line. How cool is that? We finish our run shortly after the bakery opens. I usually order the egg and cheese biscuit, and a vanilla latte or drip coffee. The biscuit is just the right size for me. I eat the top part of the biscuit with jam. This is no ordinary biscuit. GC's biscuit is crunchy on the ouside. The other half that has egg and cheese is really good as well the coffee. The dining area is small and has a communal table, three 2-person table against the wall, and a four-person bar counter by the window facing SE 13th Ave. They have tables too. We sit at the bar counter. The staff is friendly, and they know my friends by their names because they've been going there every Saturday. They're starting to remember my name since I'm becoming to be a Saturday regular. The whole space is clean including the restroom. Lots of street parking. read more

So so so good!!! I came here on a brief trip as it came highly recommended from my brother who lives very close by. We came Sunday morning at 9 and the line was out the door! We got quiche, pecan pull apart, chocolate croissant and sausage egg biscuit. They were all amazing. Very well baked, solid pastry and very fresh. We had stopped here for a snack and the place was already crowded, but we managed to get a table outside. We picked the Classic Chocolate Croissant ($3.95) and the Bread Pudding ($3.35) to share. Both were yummy! I always love a good chocolate croissant, and its large size is a plus. But the bread pudding muffin was more unique, "like French toast in a muffin cup!" We placed an order online for two grilled cheese sandwiches, when we picked them up (at the exact pickup time) and brought them home (a 3 min drive) they were cold and soggy. the bread was barely cooked and the second sandwich had NO CHEESE on it. Literally bread and mayonnaise. If I'm going to pay 8$ for as simple of a sandwich as a grilled cheese i expect them to not forget the one ingrediant it actually needs. Ever heard of a Simit? Nope, neither had I until a couple of weeks ago when I was on vacation and popped in this Grand Central for a monkeymuffin (the gooey, nutty pull apart that is my ultimate fav here) and saw the blackboard special sign "Simit with cream cheese". That's when I learned Grand Central may be the only bakery in the NW making these delectable, sesame seed coated, "bagel-esque" rolls that are rooted in ancient times and Turkish in origin. Applying the theory that calories don't count when on vacation (my scale reminded me of the folly of that theory when I got home) I bought the monkeymuffin and a simit. Simit is now on my Grand Central favs list too. Great by itself, my modality, or I imagine also with cream cheese or hummus, to make a sandwich, to... Seems to me the opportunities to enjoy a simit are endless. Damnit for my bad fortune that the Simit from Grand Central is tree hour plus hour drive from my front door. If your home is in Portland, what are you waiting for? Buy a Simit. Or several. But don't forget the monkeymuffins and a loaf of artisan bread. THIS N THAT: 1) SEATING TO EAT IN: The name here indicates bakery AND cafe. As for the cafe part, this is housed in an old building (1905 ish former grocery store perhaps), the inside is small and seating is very limited so I took all to go. Just saying for planning purposes if you're coming from out of town. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Looks like folks using wheelchairs could get inside given double doors and place counter order. Although may be tight otherwise to sit a spell at tables. Just a note for planning purposes. 3) PARKING: On street in the neighborhood is a bear, but so it goes in Portland. read more
