Waited about 30 min to be seated. Took a little long for the food to come out. Large portion, pretty sweet. I would plan to share since they give so much. I order the fried oysters/catfish it which very well seasoned, piping hot also fried hard (the way I liked it), with the homemade tater and remoulade sauce. The chicken (was tender) biscuits and gravy were so good. Biscuits were fluffy, the sausage gravy had a taste I couldn't put my finger on be was so tasty. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and, soft in the middle with a smoky flavored seasoning that made me want even more. Service~Our server and customer service was top notch. We chose to sit on the patio and, he was managing 6 times at once. He greeted the both of us promptly with water. Took our orders and, while we wait he continued to check on us while refilling his our drinks. Ambiance~Very clean restaurant and restroom. It was a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. The Memphis style ribs were tender and falling off the bone. The bbq sauce smothered over it provided great mesquite flavor. However, there was quite a bit of tendon that wasn't trimmed off the bone which made it chewy and inedible. The baked beans were deliciously sweet and the coleslaw tasty. Screen Door used to be a must-visit every time we were in Portland but the last couple visits were mid. We were seated near the kitchen area so staff and patrons were constantly brushing against our shoulders, and the service was pretty inattentive. The fried chicken and waffle is usually their star dish, the chicken usually juicy and tender and the waffle fluffy. This time around, both dishes tasted overcooked. The hushpuppies were amazing. Same with the mac & cheese. I got the fried chicken, which was so good. Came with mashed potatoes and collards. My wife got the ribs, which were good, along with the beans (great), cole slaw (great), and corn bread (really good). Screen Door is one of those restaurants I've visited several times before and still consider visiting every time I visit Portland, but most of the time I end up skipping due to the lines. This last time in town, we decided to drop by for dinner at 6PM. Luckily it was only about half full and we were seated immediately. I think we made it just in time because the restaurant was completely packed by 6:30! As we were led to our table in the corner, the smell of cornbread and tasso filled the air, followed by the scent of vanilla candlewax and pepper when we sat down. Lots of interesting smells wafting around to whet the appetite! Fried Chicken Dinner ($19) - This fried chicken is a boneless breast, breaded in a craggly almost corn flake-like crust. The fry level is fantastic for this breading, giving crunchy crispy bits all over without developing any soggy or greasy areas. The breading is salted and peppered so heavily that the chicken itself doesn't taste like it's been seasoned or marinaded. Unfortunately, the salt levels are way too high for my tastes. (Note: Screen Door is consistent. The last time I visited in 2019, I had the same comments). The breast meat between the textured crust is somewhat dry. Not to the point of being tough or stringy, but noticeably drier than a boneless thigh would be at the same level of fry. The rest of the food on the plate are great. Firstly a very smooth a buttery mashed potato, super creamy like it's been pureed, and not salted heavily so it acts like a blank canvas for the gravy. The gravy is exceptionally. It's a concentrated, intensely smoky and savory gravy. So rich, so full of umami and meatiness. It's quite runny, being cream soup-like in consistency. I wish I could order an entire bowl of it. I'm sure I'd get nauseous and sick afterwards, but it would be so worth the pain. The dish also comes with the choice of slaw or collards. We, of course, went with the latter. The greens are cooked until tender and no trace of bitterness remains after braising in the savory and slightly vinegary broth. They mix the greens with plenty of pieces of shredded ham, which is a nice touch. (5/5) Braised & Glazed Pork Belly ($24) - This was the Holiday Dinner Special. It includes two slices of sweet glazed pork belly, charred in flavor, and very tender. They trim the skin and some of the fat off, so it's not as rich and overbearing as typical pork belly, making it easy not to overindulge. It's served on a bed of mustard greens and then topped with a huckleberry demi-glace. I find huckleberry sauces usually too sweet or acidic, but this one is balanced well and works perfectly with the pork. The dish comes with two grit cakes. The outside has a thin crispy layer, but the rest of the cake is so moist and tender it almost fall apart by itself. The cakes are served on top of a thick dairy-rich cauliflower cream. It has full bodied cauliflower flavor with nice toasty notes and is smooth with no grit. (5/5) Cornbread ($5) - An order comes with two large pieces of cornbread. It's pretty solid, being mostly airy and fluffy, isn't too sweet, and doesn't have an overwhelming cornmeal flavor nor any alkalinity/baking soda flavor. I found it to have a good interior moisture level although my wife had the side piece which she said was drier. The bread is served with two pats of butter. (5/5) Creole Pecan Pie ($10) - The pecan pie crust seems to be cut instead of hand molded along the edges. It's thicker on the sides and quite thin on the bottom. The sides are flaky with tons of layers, baked until a solidly caramelized flavor develops. I found the bottom crust to be too thin to hold up against the custard. They drizzle syrup on the plate first before placing the pie slice on top, which essentially means the crust is assaulted on both sides by moisture, softening it excessively. The filling uses first boil cane syrup, giving more complex mineral notes than a typical pecan pie custard mixture of corn syrup and brown sugar. It's a nice flavor that also has hints of cranberries. They add a ton of crushed pecans, probably too much for the amount the custard can support. It seems to be the maximum amount of crushed pecan with only just enough custard to cover. Good value, but I find the best pecan pies use whole mammoth pecans and enough custard to completely cover and almost essentially candy the pecans in sugar while baking. In this pie, there isn't nearly enough custard to give that effect. On top of the slice, they add sweet and salty candied pecan halves, that also add a bit of a firmer crunch to the pie. And finally, on the very top is a somewhat gelatinized whipped cream that has plenty of bourbon mixed in. It's thick, creamy, doesn't seem to be sweetened much, and gives quite an alcoholic punch. Fyi - wait time is long. Expect to wait 30-45 minutes for a table and your whole party needs to be there in order to be seated. The service is very quick once you're seated. The servers are so kind and patient. Our food was ready in about 20 minutes or so. We went on Valentine's Day and it was busy so we were surprised how quick we received our food. Got to take care of the fur babies! So we ordered 3 items To Go! The Chicken & Waffles, an appetizer of Fried Okra, you got to have that, it's a southern staple ya'll! Now we enjoyed that Chicken and Fried Okra so much we really didn't need the Snapper and farrow, but we got that to go too! The Okra like the Chicken has a light cornmeal breading. We had a biscuit with both mushroom gravy for me, and sausage gravy for her. It was delightful. We had scrambled eggs and breakfast potatoes. I didn't end up eating the eggs just because I was too full, but the breakfast potatoes, which are Cajun seasoned, were amazing. So, so, so good. The coffee was great, and the cinnamon rolls were to die for. The secret, I'm told, is with the cream cheese. Our server, Emily, did an exceptionally good job of both being pleasant and helpful and being there when we needed her. Just reminiscing about my time in PDX with one of my favorite places to eat while I'm there. I underestimated the food scene coming from Vegas as it's hard to beat home sometimes. But I'll surrender when I'm somewhere that truly deserves it. It was filled with people but the wait was honestly not that bad and we got sat pretty quick the bar. Everyone is nice and we started our morning with micheladas. It was solid. The food was the best part. I got the catfish sandwich and deep friend oysters and it was making me drool. I personally had the chicken and waffles and as someone who's felt like I'm tried of chicken n waffles I didn't want to get it but I did it again and ordered it (knowing I'd try the other dishes my family got ahahah) the chicken was so well seasoned and juicy and the waffle it self was so good with bits of sweet potato in it! I had bites of the bananas fosters French toast and they were amazing but you have to really be a in a sugar mode to just have that as you're main. And the cheddar grits with shrimp YUMMY!
