What an incredible experience! The location is so cozy, with the restaurant itself giving the same sort of vibes. Immaculate atmosphere and the exact sort of thing we were looking for for breakfast. We didn't get her name but saw on the receipt her name might have been Davi, she was such a bundle of light and life, so attentive and kind! She immediately gave us wonderful recommendations which we all adored. The table ordered praline bacon to share (do yourself a favor and get this), one ordered the praline bacon waffle, another ordered the bananas foster waffle, and I got the seasonal vegetable hash. We were all in HEAVEN with what we ordered. From the first bite to the last it we were all absolutely stunned by how delicious and well made everything was. I savored every bite as did my compatriots. One gal ordered a couple things to go for her family (huevos rancheros for the hubby and cinnamon rolls for her kiddos) and our waitress Davi recommended they bring out the cinnamon rolls unfired so that she could pop them in the oven when she got home after a short drive. It was such good attention to detail that felt like such a friendly offer. Absolute superstars, the lot of you. Screen Door is a Portland icon. When family visited and wanted to go to all of the "touristy" spots in Portland, I immediately made a reservation for brunch at the original Eastside location. I know they get busy on weekends but we had no problem making a reservation and being seated promptly indoors. Their indoor space can get quite loud. They do have a covered side patio as well. We ordered some of their classic dishes: chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, banana foster French toast. Everything was absolutely delicious. I did feel some sticker shock at the prices ($17-24 ish) but the portions are quite large. They do have a kids menu as well as a full bar. Customer service was excellent, with a seemingly genuinely friendly server. Though they were busy, it was easy to get assistance as needed. The decor is wonderfully charming. Overall, Screen Door might not be an every-weekend kind of thing, but for an out-of-town visitor, a special occasion, or craving you just can't shake - it's absolutely worth the stop. read more

Had another experience at Screendoor Eastside! This time, I had dinner. The gentleman that seated us gave us the option to sit inside or out. We sat outside. It was a nice day. We had the fried green tomatoes and fried oysters. The tomatoes were okay. I didn't care for the sauce that accompanied them. The oysters were delicious as always. We both had the jambalaya for dinner. It was delicious! The portion size was just right. It was delightfully tasty! To drink, I had the Ginger Lime Nohito. It was absolutely divine and I'd order it again. Samara, our server, could have been better. I had to stop her a couple times for napkins, to order more, and for to go boxes. We dropped by on a Monday around 9:30 AM for our first visit. Even though they were busy, it wasn't terrible--we got seated right away and the host was amazing. Our server, however, was a different story. While I was in the bathroom, my wife tried to order coffees for both of us, but the waitress pushed back and refused until I returned, repeatedly questioning if I was actually there. Sitting close to other tables, we overheard her handle the exact same situation completely differently for another party, and the service vibe at our table felt off the entire morning. We felt welcomed the moment we walked in. The decor and ambiance were great--it felt warm and comfortable. It really had that Southern touch. Lovely setup, from the tables to, especially, the chairs. Shoutout and endless love to Mike. My best friend and I came to pick up a DoorDash order before they closed to realize we ordered it to their other location. Mike saved our day, he called the other location to let them know we couldn't make it, and had their kitchen make us a meal. This was beyond kind especially since it was right at closing. The food was good but it's never worth it to wait over an hour for any food, especially if you're hungry. Our group was told the wait was going to be 20 minutes... but we ended up waiting for an hour. And then waited another half an hour for the food to come out. I got the chicken and biscuit. Davi was amazing and made sure we had the best recommendations. We had a reservation for 12:15 on Saturday and highly recommend having one because it was packed! Our total was 73.2 after tip for 2 dishes and 2 mocktails. Portion sizes were huge, if you're getting any savory dish, the sausage gravy is a must add. It complemented the chicken with the habanero sauce that is on the table. The chicken was juicy and crispy, and the sweet potato waffles tasted like carrots/pumpkin which was perfect for the combo. The Memphis style ribs were tender and falling off the bone. The bbq sauce smothered over it provided great mesquite flavor. However, there was quite a bit of tendon that wasn't trimmed off the bone which made it chewy and inedible. The baked beans were deliciously sweet and the coleslaw tasty. The fried oysters were crispy outside and tender inside. Highly recommend getting this. I order the fried oysters/catfish it which very well seasoned, piping hot also fried hard (the way I liked it), with the homemade tater and remoulade sauce. Screen Door used to be a must-visit every time we were in Portland but the last couple visits were mid. We were seated near the kitchen area so staff and patrons were constantly brushing against our shoulders, and the service was pretty inattentive. The fried chicken and waffle is usually their star dish, the chicken usually juicy and tender and the waffle fluffy. This time around, both dishes tasted overcooked. What a gem. A true gem in the city of Portland. Super impressed by Screen Door, no wonder there's always a massive line. Worth it! Make reservations, you won't regret it. All employees we came across were super nice especially our waitress. She was fab! Ordered the Cajun Scramble [$19] which came with potatoes & a biscuit. The potatoes were some of the best we've tried and the scramble was really flavorful. Also got the Praline Waffle [$15] which came w/one huge waffle with all the praline fixings. That was sooo esp the white cream that it came with. Tried a bite of the Banana's Foster French Toast [$16]- super good as well. Our waitress was Davina -- so kind, helpful, patient, and attentive. Cheesy grits were perfect. Mushroom scramble could have used more goat cheese - it was difficult to find and with no other cheese or sauce the first few bites were a bit meh. Tomatoes would also be a great addition. Raspberry jam had a wonderful flavor pop. Bourbon whipped cream was heavenly. Biscuits were fresh. Rhubarb was delicious- wishing they had a strawberry rhubarb mix. Strawberry waffle had frosting instead of whipped cream which made it way too sweet and my daughter mentioned the frosting was thick and difficult to get through, in addition to being overly sweet. Stopped in at one of our favorite restaurants to reconnoiter for an upcoming big family dinner. Had a thoroughly delicious meal. The hushpuppies were amazing. Same with the mac & cheese. I got the fried chicken, which was so good. Came with mashed potatoes and collards. My wife got the ribs, which were good, along with the beans (great), cole slaw (great), and corn bread (really good). In a testament to the portion sizes, we were so full that we not only had to package up leftovers but we also had no room for dessert despite the dessert menu looking great. I'm a sucker for a Southern-style breakfast, and Screen Door certainly scratches that itch. Highlights were the carbs: the sweet potato waffle (light with a crispy outside) and the bananas foster French toast (indulgent, but not cloying). The proteins were promising, but both came up a bit short: the praline bacon (weirdly floppy) and the fried chicken (beautifully cooked, but the coating lacked flavor). Waitstaff were a delight, menu was expansive, and price point felt pretty standard for a higher-end brunch spot. I'd happily go back to try a few more dishes. read more

Screen Door is one of those restaurants I've visited several times before and still consider visiting every time I visit Portland, but most of the time I end up skipping due to the lines. This last time in town, we decided to drop by for dinner at 6PM. Luckily it was only about half full and we were seated immediately. I think we made it just in time because the restaurant was completely packed by 6:30! As we were led to our table in the corner, the smell of cornbread and tasso filled the air, followed by the scent of vanilla candlewax and pepper when we sat down. Lots of interesting smells wafting around to whet the appetite! Fried Chicken Dinner ($19) - This fried chicken is a boneless breast, breaded in a craggly almost corn flake-like crust. The fry level is fantastic for this breading, giving crunchy crispy bits all over without developing any soggy or greasy areas. The breading is salted and peppered so heavily that the chicken itself doesn't taste like it's been seasoned or marinaded. Unfortunately, the salt levels are way too high for my tastes. (Note: Screen Door is consistent. The last time I visited in 2019, I had the same comments). The breast meat between the textured crust is somewhat dry. Not to the point of being tough or stringy, but noticeably drier than a boneless thigh would be at the same level of fry. The rest of the food on the plate are great. Firstly a very smooth a buttery mashed potato, super creamy like it's been pureed, and not salted heavily so it acts like a blank canvas for the gravy. The gravy is exceptionally. It's a concentrated, intensely smoky and savory gravy. So rich, so full of umami and meatiness. It's quite runny, being cream soup-like in consistency. I wish I could order an entire bowl of it. I'm sure I'd get nauseous and sick afterwards, but it would be so worth the pain. The dish also comes with the choice of slaw or collards. We, of course, went with the latter. The greens are cooked until tender and no trace of bitterness remains after braising in the savory and slightly vinegary broth. They mix the greens with plenty of pieces of shredded ham, which is a nice touch. (5/5) Braised & Glazed Pork Belly ($24) - This was the Holiday Dinner Special. It includes two slices of sweet glazed pork belly, charred in flavor, and very tender. They trim the skin and some of the fat off, so it's not as rich and overbearing as typical pork belly, making it easy not to overindulge. It's served on a bed of mustard greens and then topped with a huckleberry demi-glace. I find huckleberry sauces usually too sweet or acidic, but this one is balanced well and works perfectly with the pork. The dish comes with two grit cakes. The outside has a thin crispy layer, but the rest of the cake is so moist and tender it almost fall apart by itself. The cakes are served on top of a thick dairy-rich cauliflower cream. It has full bodied cauliflower flavor with nice toasty notes and is smooth with no grit. (5/5) Cornbread ($5) - An order comes with two large pieces of cornbread. It's pretty solid, being mostly airy and fluffy, isn't too sweet, and doesn't have an overwhelming cornmeal flavor nor any alkalinity/baking soda flavor. I found it to have a good interior moisture level although my wife had the side piece which she said was drier. The bread is served with two pats of butter. (5/5) Creole Pecan Pie ($10) - The pecan pie crust seems to be cut instead of hand molded along the edges. It's thicker on the sides and quite thin on the bottom. The sides are flaky with tons of layers, baked until a solidly caramelized flavor develops. I found the bottom crust to be too thin to hold up against the custard. They drizzle syrup on the plate first before placing the pie slice on top, which essentially means the crust is assaulted on both sides by moisture, softening it excessively. The filling uses first boil cane syrup, giving more complex mineral notes than a typical pecan pie custard mixture of corn syrup and brown sugar. It's a nice flavor that also has hints of cranberries. They add a ton of crushed pecans, probably too much for the amount the custard can support. It seems to be the maximum amount of crushed pecan with only just enough custard to cover. Good value, but I find the best pecan pies use whole mammoth pecans and enough custard to completely cover and almost essentially candy the pecans in sugar while baking. In this pie, there isn't nearly enough custard to give that effect. On top of the slice, they add sweet and salty candied pecan halves, that also add a bit of a firmer crunch to the pie. And finally, on the very top is a somewhat gelatinized whipped cream that has plenty of bourbon mixed in. It's thick, creamy, doesn't seem to be sweetened much, and gives quite an alcoholic punch. This is a really nice place in a quant neighborhood. It's cozy and lots of room in the dining area. Decor-lots of tables, lots of windows, and lots of people. I liked the hardwood floors and vibes. Service-very good service. The staff is really friendly and inviting. They kept our coffee mugs full and kept checking on us frequenlty. Food-I liked the presentation of seasonal fruit and entrees. Good sized portions and reasonable prices. Huevos rancheros-3.5/5 stars. I liked the sauce and cheese, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the tortilla added a nice crunch. Now this is a true Southern Restaurant with multiple locations around Portland and at the PDX Airport on Concourse B. Well you have to do the chicken breast and sweet potato waffles. Got to take care of the fur babies! So we ordered 3 items To Go! The Chicken & Waffles, an appetizer of Fried Okra, you got to have that, it's a southern staple ya'll! Now we enjoyed that Chicken and Fried Okra so much we really didn't need the Snapper and farrow, but we got that to go too! The Okra like the Chicken has a light cornmeal breading. I've just had one of the best meals ever and can't wait to tell you all about it! We shared the cinnamon rolls (2 to an order) and coffee first, and then built our own breakfast off of their sides, which are very reasonably priced. We had a biscuit with both mushroom gravy for me, and sausage gravy for her. It was delightful. We had scrambled eggs and breakfast potatoes. I didn't end up eating the eggs just because I was too full, but the breakfast potatoes, which are Cajun seasoned, were amazing. So, so, so good. The coffee was great, and the cinnamon rolls were to die for. The secret, I'm told, is with the cream cheese. Our server, Emily, did an exceptionally good job of both being pleasant and helpful and being there when we needed her.
