Guys, im gonna be real, as far as food in portland goes Screen Door is surprisingly good! I feel like compared to other southern style foods ive had across the country its lacking a little but overall I always enjoy what I order and the staff is very attentative and quick despite the fact that this place is ALWAYS PACKED (plan for a wait in the busier days) The inside is pretty cute to look at and there is ample seating both indoors and outdoors. good lighting yadayada, the focus is food and they have food. come here for breakfast or brunch. just once. they have mimosas

Fried Oysters

The Memphis style ribs were tender and falling off the bone. The bbq sauce smothered over it provided great mesquite flavor. However, there was quite a bit of tendon that wasn't trimmed off the bone which made it chewy and inedible. The baked beans were deliciously sweet and the coleslaw tasty. The fried oysters were crispy outside and tender inside. Highly recommend getting this. The restaurant had quite an amount of bugs flying inside so it was annoying having to wave them off as they circled around our food.

Chicken & Waffles - 3 Piece

Screen Door used to be a must-visit every time we were in Portland but the last couple visits were mid. We were seated near the kitchen area so staff and patrons were constantly brushing against our shoulders, and the service was pretty inattentive. The fried chicken and waffle is usually their star dish, the chicken usually juicy and tender and the waffle fluffy. This time around, both dishes tasted overcooked. We might visit again, but it probably won't be part of our usual rotation now.

Cajun Scramble $19 & Praline Waffle $15

What a gem. A true gem in the city of Portland. Super impressed by Screen Door, no wonder there's always a massive line. Worth it! Make reservations, you won't regret it. The restaurant is simply decorated and really clean. They really pack people in there, but it's packed in not a suffocating way. Our party of 5 got seated about 10 min after we checked in. All employees we came across were super nice especially our waitress. She was fab! Ordered the Cajun Scramble [$19] which came with potatoes & a biscuit. The potatoes were some of the best we've tried and the scramble was really flavorful. Also got the Praline Waffle [$15] which came w/one huge waffle with all the praline fixings. That was sooo esp the white cream that it came with. Tried a bite of the Banana's Foster French Toast [$16]- super good as well. Also took a bite of the Cinnamon Roll [$9] which was warm and gooey just the way I like it. The whole meal was straight fire! No misses. Would have loved to try their dinner menu, but it was our last day in the city. However, if we ever find ourselves in Portland again, best believe we're coming back for more. Excellent establishment!

Crispy Chicken Sandwich

This place was packed and for good reason. Got the fried okra to share and omg what a fun snack. It was crispy and flavorful. The sauce that it comes it, omg i can drink. Loved the combination. The drinks came late which is weird but it was delicious and so refreshing. I got the mule from their cocktails menu. Then got the chicken sandwich as my mail and omg that was a lot of food. The chicken was thinned out and they had some kind of mayo sauce. I got the slaw on the side i don't love all slaw. This was ok. The sandwich for dry at some parts. I used the sauce from okras to dip the sandwich. The fries were the perfect crisp that fries should be. Overall good food and fun brunch spot.

Lowcountry Shrimp & Grits Vegetarian Sausage Bananas Foster French Toast

Came in for brunch, the location was quite packed and we waited for ~20 mins before getting seated. Our server was friendly and service was relatively quick. We ordered the shrimp and grits, banana foster French toast, with vegan sausage on the side. The food was delicious! The shrimps were plump and the flavors balanced well with the grits. The banana foster French toast was so good, not too sweet but definitely decadent. We also received biscuits with butter and jam, but were way too stuffed to finish it. The serving sizes were quite large. Solid brunch spot, would come again!

Strawberry waffle Special
Crystina S.

Our waitress was Davina -- so kind, helpful, patient, and attentive. Cheesy grits were perfect. Mushroom scramble could have used more goat cheese - it was difficult to find and with no other cheese or sauce the first few bites were a bit meh. Tomatoes would also be a great addition. Raspberry jam had a wonderful flavor pop. Bourbon whipped cream was heavenly. Biscuits were fresh. Rhubarb was delicious- wishing they had a strawberry rhubarb mix. Strawberry waffle had frosting instead of whipped cream which made it way too sweet and my daughter mentioned the frosting was thick and difficult to get through, in addition to being overly sweet. She LOVES sugar everything, so that says something. Praline waffle was so heavy on the nuts my son was overwhelmed by them. Love the heaters in the patio area - outside seating is completely in the shade.

First time here! Food was incredible! Biscuits were crisp on the outside, but buttery and soft on the inside. Definitely not dry. The chicken had plenty of seasoning to make it not bland but not enough to take away from the dish as a whole. My banana French toast was incredible! Super caramel-y. And the cocktails were killer!! All of the staff that we interacted with were super nice and seemed like they worked well as a team. The antique butter dishes, and rolling pins on the wall were a super cute touch and made it feel authentic; like mawmaws house!

I really wanted to like this place after seeing all the stellar reviews, but unfortunately I thought the brunch was only average. I got the chicken and waffles which were decent, and had a unique gingerbready taste. It was not my favorite. My family got an assortment of dishes including the chicken sandwich, the carolina gold burger, and the chicken and biscuits. All the food was good but it did not meet my expectations. The restaurant was packed for brunch, but service was still very kind and attentive. Come early to put your name down.

Hushpuppies
Chris L.

Came here for a late Friday night dinner and had an awesome experience. Staff were friendly and the restaurant itself has nice ambiance. The menu is great - we got a lot. The hushpuppies were amazing. Same with the mac & cheese. I got the fried chicken, which was so good. Came with mashed potatoes and collards. My wife got the ribs, which were good, along with the beans (great), cole slaw (great), and corn bread (really good). In a testament to the portion sizes, we were so full that we not only had to package up leftovers but we also had no room for dessert despite the dessert menu looking great. And for all that we spent $64, which seemed very reasonable. We'll definitely be back.

Screen Door is one of those Portland brunch spots everyone should try at least once. The space is cute, the vibe is lively, and there's always a line out the door. That said, I've been here a few times and keep wanting to love it more than I actually do. The food is good, but with so many amazing brunch spots around PDX, nothing on the menu really stands out enough to justify coming here just for brunch. The exception? The Bloody Mary. That thing is loaded and worth ordering every single time.

Fried Chicken Sandwich and fries
Tully B.

Screen Door's original location still reigns supreme in the Portland dining scene. The fried chicken is next level, the drinks are delicious and the sides are so good. The red beans and rice are stand out yum. Our server on Mother's Day was great (I'm not a Phillies fan but our whole fam wishes Portland service was more up to his level) thanks SD.

Huevos Rancheros
Lizeth S.

THE BEST Huevos Rancheros. Ever. All natural beef brisket slow stewed black beans and two over medium eggs over a crispy tortilla with melted pepper jack and jalapeño cream is all you'll ever need again. This dish had me specifically come here from Florida, and NOW I know why. A quaint corner cafe with ample space inside and quick service that'll have your belly and watch happy.

Ask the Community - Screen Door Eastside

I thought I saw crispy fried chicken livers back on the menu? Any idea when they will be back in rotation?

How can I make a reservation?

Online or phone

Does this restaurant provide heated syrup for griddle items like pancakes, waffles, and french toast?

Yes, we do provide heated syrup!

How can I get reservations for the terrace?

In OpenTable, there is an option to pick indoor or outdoor seating, you'll be prompted automatically. You can also always call and make a reservation for the patio as well!

Do they take reservations for Sunday brunch? Tried every Sunday through March, nothing available till 5:30 PM

Nope. The world famous line around the block is how things are done at the Screen Door Sunday Brunch. Probably best to have everyone there at the same time(ish) since I don't think they let a party wait for stragglers.

Is brunch served daily? Or only on the weekend?

Yes, they do daily. From what I last remember.

Do they have outdoor seating?

Covered and Heated

Do they have an option for gravy without pork?

Yes, we do! We have a delicious mushroom gravy during brunch. The gravy we serve in the evening is made with pork and can not be made without it.

Are the sweet potato waffles gluten free?

No, they have flour on them.

Are there any vegan options?

No, I sure if you ask they will try to help you out but everything has meat, eggs or some sort of Dairy

Are they open on MLK Day, this coming Monday, and is the wait time shorter on a Monday? Not into standing out in the rain for an hour so hoping a Monday morning will be no to little wait.

I would call & double check (I'd assume they would be open though). Weekdays are definitely best to visit (since more people are working). But since MLK is a holiday & people may be off work to avoid a wait i would get there as early as possible.…

Can you order ahead?

No, you cannot order ahead and your ENTIRE party must be present to be seated

Are you open on Thanksgiving?

No they were not nor will they ever be

Are they open 4th of July?

Yes, we will be open from 8am to 2pm on the Fourth of July.

Are corn tortillas an option?

Yes

Do they serve fried oysters on weekdays or only weekend brunch?

We just had them on a Friday night

Anything gluten free?

Eggs and bacon

For dinner do all the members of your party have to be there to be seated?

That’s their official policy, but as Judy experienced they do make the occasional exception. FYI - a kind word and an accommodating attitude is likely helpful in receiving this exception :)!

How long a wait on a week night?

Week night dinners are actually pretty decent. We went on Monday around 6pm and our party of 2 was seated immediately. There were two other larger parties of 4-5 that waited a few minutes, but there was no line stretching around the block.

What type of coffee is served there? I remember having it and I am from out of town. Would like to order some as it was amazing.

I would call them and ask

We decided on outdoor patio seating since the weather was nice & it was generally quieter outside. We were people watching for a bit and noticed that our fellow restaurant goers were waiting for quite a bit, but we weren't in a hurry, so it was fine. When our waiter eventually tended to us, he was incredibly friendly & apologetic, owning up to the delay being on him, but we were cool with it -poor guy was working a double shift. We started off with deep-fried okra, I ordered the fried chicken meal, & hubby ordered the burger. I got to pick the chicken pieces I wanted, so I went with 2 thighs, thinking they'd be smaller pieces, so I could maybe finish my meal. I opted for collard greens as well. The food came relatively quickly and was super-fresh. The fried okra bits were piping hot down to the last bite. They went well with the spicy aioli. We hung onto the aioli so hubby could dip his fries. My meal was so good. The chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful. The batter was just perfect and crisp. Mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy. Gravy was rich and well-seasoned. Collard greens were so tasty. The balance of textures was just perfection. I ended up having to pack up a piece of chicken because it was so much food, but I enjoyed every bite I was able to take of my meal. I appreciated their welcoming vibe & the beautiful pride balloon arch inside the restaurant. I appreciated the friendly service. I appreciated the thoughtfully and expertly made food. It was a perfect way to end my culinary experience for this Portland visit.

We had the coffee (Extracto, love.), I had a really good hef and my mother a very well balanced Bellini that I was very pleasantly surprised with trying. From what I saw, the lunch sounds very good and I'd be more apt to recommend folks give that a shot if they happened to be going there too. I'm not sure if I'd recommend as a must go stop. Vibe wise, the ambience is overall really nice. I think having rolled flatware, even with just upgraded napkins, would better complete the aesthetic you initially see and feel. This would also connect with the price point of the food and quality of the beverages. As a fellow server, on that note I would expect more consistent stronger visual appearance standards with servers. (Sorry guys! But some of you looked great!) Overall, I'd definitely join a friend for coffee and lunch over there in the future. Just wouldn't be my top pick for a celebratory brunch or intimate dinner with a date or friends and fam.
