Took a short walk here from the Royal Sonesta hotel to have dinner after a long adventurous day out and about in Portland. We decided on outdoor patio seating since the weather was nice & it was generally quieter outside. We were people watching for a bit and noticed that our fellow restaurant goers were waiting for quite a bit, but we weren't in a hurry, so it was fine. When our waiter eventually tended to us, he was incredibly friendly & apologetic, owning up to the delay being on him, but we were cool with it -poor guy was working a double shift. We started off with deep-fried okra, I ordered the fried chicken meal, & hubby ordered the burger. I got to pick the chicken pieces I wanted, so I went with 2 thighs, thinking they'd be smaller pieces, so I could maybe finish my meal. I opted for collard greens as well. The food came relatively quickly and was super-fresh. The fried okra bits were piping hot down to the last bite. They went well with the spicy aioli. We hung onto the aioli so hubby could dip his fries. My meal was so good. The chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful. The batter was just perfect and crisp. Mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy. Gravy was rich and well-seasoned. Collard greens were so tasty. The balance of textures was just perfection. I ended up having to pack up a piece of chicken because it was so much food, but I enjoyed every bite I was able to take of my meal. I appreciated their welcoming vibe & the beautiful pride balloon arch inside the restaurant. I appreciated the friendly service. I appreciated the thoughtfully and expertly made food. Date of visit: May 10, 2026 This was our second attempt to dine at Screen Door and our first success, after we declined a two-hour wait a couple days earlier. Overall it was worth the wait, with a solid menu and a delicious chicken and waffles dish that awaited me. Our server was very nice, an incredibly tall waiter who had a relaxed style about him and a friendly demeanor. The C&W was very good, with a portion that was just right for one person, which was good because I had nowhere to store any leftovers! To be honest, this probably would have been a five-star review had we not sat outside. And while I realize that what happened isn't really the restaurant's fault, the experience and the location are forever intertwined in my memory. You see, Portland has a big homeless population. And that was no more evident than during our dinner where we observed a man drop a deuce in the street and after an interaction with local security, pick it up with his bare hands. Walking into Screen Door, the first thing that stands out is the atmosphere. It's bright, airy, and has a charming Southern feel with beautiful floral touches. Even the restrooms were thoughtfully decorated and added to the overall experience. We started with the warm cinnamon roll, then ordered the Chicken & Waffles, Chicken & Biscuits, and the Rhubarb Pancake. Everything was good, but nothing really stood out as memorable. After trying several restaurants during our trip to Portland, this was one of the places I was most excited to visit because of all the hype. The fried okra is awesome! The flavor & seasoning is there, even without the sauce. I am def a "sauce with absolutely everything" person, and it is so flavorful, I could have done without. This was my first time having catfish. I also am not a fan of grits, but knew that it would be to good to pass up and not give it a try. Everything on the catfish platter was splendid. I adored the biscuit and raspberry jam, might've been the best I have had! The raspberry jam was so good I asked for extra (because seriously, what was I going to do with that little bit provided lol) they end up bringing two more hehe. The biscuit was super soft, buttery and light (also coming from someone that couldn't care less about a biscuit). I also appreciate a biscuit that is NOT flaky! Hold your hate comments lmao! The food was insanely delicious, I'm dreaming about returning. I had the shrimp and grits, my colleagues had the chicken and biscuits and the chicken and waffle. Everything made me drool! Sundar street parking is free in certain zones before 1 pm, it was less than a 5 min walk from the restaurant. The waiters have a southern hospitality type of vibe which was nice. Now for the food: Praline bacon: 8/10 sweet and savory, nutty and bacony. It was good but would I pay $12 for 3 strips of bacon again? Probably not. Bananas foster French toast: 10/10 buttery, sweet caramelized bananas, great for dessert or breakfast if you're a sweet breakfast kind of person. Chicken fried steak with sausage gravy: 7/10 there a lot of chewy bits in steak and it was already a very thin cut. Also comes with scrambled eggs and potatoes. Full 5-star experience! Great job, Screen Door! We shared a strawberry shortcake breakfast appetizer (don't judge!) and it was delightful. Spectacular heavy cream biscuit with local Oregon strawberries and a lovely whipped cream, legit, not the aerosolized kind. I highly recommend starting your day with this. We also shared the shredded pork eggs Benedict. I liked it a lot, although I generally appreciate a bit more lemon taste in hollandaise sauce, but this hollandaise was so creamy, smooth and flavorful, I'm not mad. The breakfast potatoes served with this are very tasty - delightfully seasoned and perfectly cooked - crispy outside and fluffy inside. The coffee was very good. I'm not sure if it was because of how busy this place was when we got here for brunch, but the food was very cold and unappetizing. We got here at 10am on a Monday, and every table was filled. It looked like they had numerous staff, but I would guess that the traffic level must be hard to manage. Perhaps because of this, my order of Sawmill breakfast was very poorly prepared. The gravy was luke warm at best. The eggs had the texture of frozen powdered egg that was just thawed. The biscuit was like a brick and hard to eat. I also saw numerous other patrons who were leaving their scrambled eggs untouched. The chicken tenders were warm and delicious, and the quiche was decent. Salad was probably the highlight. Deviled eggs were great- though not as good as my mommas. Red Snapper was perfectly cooked and sauced with a piece of toast to sop up all the flavor. On this visit, we ordered the Praline Bacon, Chicken and Waffles, and Catfish and Grits. The Praline Bacon had so much flavor. A hint of maple, the sweetness and crunch of the pralines makes this bacon appetizer a must have. The Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Waffles are truly a comfort food combination, as it brought back memories to my first time at Screen Door back in 2009. Went for the Happy Hour here and left stunned! This place was just down the street from our hotel and while we were walking we stumbled upon it just in time for happy hour and we are so glad we did! To start the service was great, the server was quick, attentive, and friendly even though we came in just 1 hour before closed he was so patient with us! Food was astonishing. When we were sat we got a cute little booth and our server was so nice but really busy. I don't remember what drink I had but it kept me pretty warm in such a cold city. For food, I opted for the low country shrimp and grits, while my husband order the Cajun scramble and Taylor order the winter veggie scramble. I did have a cocktail I just can't remember what it was but it had gin, it was so refreshing and kept me pretty warm throughout our walk after brunch. When our food came out, I was so excited, the biscuit was so buttery good, I wish I had ordered a batch to take back to Seattle because I still think about it, dream about it. If arriving with a large group midday, expect a wait. Suggest you arrive early. Luckily I was solo and was quickly seated at the bar - place was packed inside too. No empty seats & staff were all pretty friendly. Drinks: I had the blood orange mimosa and spiked coffee. Both were pretty damn good not too sweet. Who knew that you could find delicious southern food in the Pacific northwest? We stumbled upon Screen Door at the PDX on our last visit, and were excited to try this restaurant in the Pearl District. Make a reservation! This place was jammed on a Tuesday at 11:30. Really friendly and helpful staff all around from the moment you walk in, to the servers and runners. What can I say about the food? We loved everything we tried, and I wanted everything on the menu, but our server helped me dial it back. The fried chicken really is all that, whether you get some tenders or a sandwich or on top of a waffle! Biscuits were also great. Perhaps the only food item that was slightly disappointing to me were the cinnamon buns. Just didn't have enough of that delicious cinnamon filling for me. I thought the French toast would be too sweet, but it was just right, and so filling that I could only finish half; it was still wonderful. The gravy that came with the sawmill meal was excellent, with the flavor, and the bacon was perfect, not burnt, but still had a crispness.
