In Portland, OR on business and I'm flying back east this evening so before I leave, I want a great dinner. My co-worker mentioned wanting some "creole, southern cooking" so I did some more Yelp'ing of course, revealing yet another bookmark, Screen Door! Here's how it went. Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right on Couch St. in the Pearl District is this gem. The outside isn't much to look at, it's straightforward and modern. The restaurant is set on the corner and is adorned with yellow touches with a decent-sized outdoor section. Once inside it feels like a nice old-school mansion set right out of the bayous of New Orleans. Lots of low yellow lighting, woods and bright tiles decorate the bar as well as the seating areas. It's one big open seating area with the bar off to the right. I loved the open concept. It was busy, but wasn't terribly loud. I also LOVED how this place loudly and proudly welcomed LGBTQ+ community with a rainbow of balloons as well as artwork! Service: I can't remember who took care of us, but we had no issues here whatsoever. Food: The drinks were strong, colorful and delightful. Being based on southern cooking I had to try the classing New Orleans Hurricane and Sazerac! The Hurricane was huge, delicious and of course, strong. The Sazerac was practically perfect. First up I checked out the Hush Puppies which are cornmeal fritters w/ pepper jelly. These were delicious, hot, fresh and the pepper jelly had an EXCELLENT spice to it! Next up were the Crispy Fried Oysters which are cooked then crusted with cornmeal, bacon, other seasonings and served with toast points. These were delicious and literally made me forget I was eating oysters. Next up I tried the fried chicken that came with buttermilk-battered, crispy fried boneless chicken breast & thigh w/ buttery mashed potatoes, tasso ham gravy and collard greens. Absolutely fantastic. Chicken was crispy, juicy, tender and well-seasoned. The mashed potatoes were also moist and left my mouth watering after each bite. Collard greens were fresh and everything I wanted them to be. I also got the chance to try the Chicken & Waffles which comes with 1, 2 or 3 pieces of chicken depending on how hungry you are, a sweet potato waffle and of course syrup while everything is dusted with powdered sugar. Fantastic. The savory and the sweet just balanced themselves so well. My co-worked also let me try his macaroni & cheese which was damn good. We sat at the high chairs and tables facing the street and our waitress was prompt, professional and courteous. I ordered coffee and my wife ordered a glass of apple juice. A quick survey of the menu we settled on the following, my wife had the country fried steak with the sausage and mushroom gravy on the side and I ordered the fried chicken and biscuits with scrambled eggs and both sausage and mushroom gravy on the side. Date of visit: May 10, 2026 This was our second attempt to dine at Screen Door and our first success, after we declined a two-hour wait a couple days earlier. Overall it was worth the wait, with a solid menu and a delicious chicken and waffles dish that awaited me. My last time at the screen door was their original location about 12 years ago. Amazing experience and I've been looking forward to one day returning one. That day finally arrived, but I truly wish it had not. Actually one of the worst experiences of my life, zero exaggeration, no cap. The crux of it is this - I've had food poisoning from a restaurant before, and it was awful, but unintentional. This. Was. Different. Long story short, I ordered the chicken and biscuits and decided to go with the vegetarian gravy, as it looked absolutely packed with mushrooms. The waiter was pleasant and our food arrived fairly quickly. Everyone's food looked perfect, except there were zero mushrooms on my plate. I asked the waiter whether this was the vegetarian gravy or if there was a mistake. This is where things turned. Instead of taking a small service L, the waiter tells me, no there is no mistake - this is what was ordered - chicken with pork gravy. Completely unprofessional thing to say and the dude's tone had obviously shifted. Waiter rhen stated that he had brought me what I had ordered, but that if I had changed my mind, he would fix it. Service was poor after this interaction. Why was the waiter taking this like a personal attack? I was super kind when addressing the issue, as I know mistakes happen and its really not a big deal, as long as it is corrected without much fuss. For clarity, my spouse and two kids all confirmed that they clearly heard me order the mushroom gravy. If it had been my blunder, I would have probably eaten the pork gravy, but that wasn't what I ordered. Retired came out, it was tasty enough, and even though server was weird, I felt and left a slightly substandard tip of less than 20%. Long story short, a few hours later, I had the worst abdominal discomfort I've had in all my time on earth. I was so discombobulated that I had trouble making it from the bed to the bathroom a few deer away. I spent an hour in the bathroom and im telling you... it was bad. Like, my wife called 911 and paramedics were talking to me through the bathroom door for 15 min before leaving for a bigger emergency. For the record, this is the only time I have been so ill that my partner has called emergency services. The rest of my family was fine, thank God. My teenaged son called the restaurant to let them know how sick I was, but they brushed him off with "food poisoning can't begin that quickly." Guess what? The paramedics said otherwise, and said this sounded like textbook food contamination. So, for the waiter with such a small ego that they will poison someone that politely asks for the correct gravy... I hope that one day, you experience the same pain in kind. read more

I am not generally a fan of Southern food, but this place is good! I am not a huge fan of fried food in general and surprisingly, I did not feel awful, nasty full at the end of this meal. Took a short walk here from the Royal Sonesta hotel to have dinner after a long adventurous day out and about in Portland. We decided on outdoor patio seating since the weather was nice & it was generally quieter outside. I got to pick the chicken pieces I wanted, so I went with 2 thighs, thinking they'd be smaller pieces, so I could maybe finish my meal. I opted for collard greens as well. The food came relatively quickly and was super-fresh. The fried okra bits were piping hot down to the last bite. They went well with the spicy aioli. We hung onto the aioli so hubby could dip his fries. My meal was so good. The chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful. The batter was just perfect and crisp. Mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy. Gravy was rich and well-seasoned. Collard greens were so tasty. The balance of textures was just perfection. I ended up having to pack up a piece of chicken because it was so much food, but I enjoyed every bite I was able to take of my meal. Southern cuisine is a hard to find item here in PDX, at least for me. Born and raised in NC I'm always on the lookout for some southern comfort food. Screen Door is just about as close as I've come to momma's home cookin'. I love the peppered fried chicken and the mashed potatoes. Also, at least seasonally you can find okra here. Okra is pretty much non-existent in this neck of the woods. I've honestly ordered from here more than I've actually visited the location but the few times I've been in person it was while seated outside. I do love a good people watching session alongside chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and cornbread. Sundar street parking is free in certain zones before 1 pm, it was less than a 5 min walk from the restaurant. The waiters have a southern hospitality type of vibe which was nice. Now for the food: Praline bacon: 8/10 sweet and savory, nutty and bacony. It was good but would I pay $12 for 3 strips of bacon again? Probably not. The gravy was luke warm at best. The eggs had the texture of frozen powdered egg that was just thawed. The biscuit was like a brick and hard to eat. We went with a large group (with a reservation) and this was an incredible brunch spot! It's hard to travel with a large group in Portland and we were so thankful for our reservation because the food here is DIVINE. We came for a little pre-birthday celebration and we loved all of it. The chicken and waffles was a huge hit for our group and the strawberry shortcake is one that I will compare all future ones to! read more

Well I guess we found the hot spot in the area Pearl District area! Not only was this spot super cute but everything we ordered was so good! My crispy chicken sandwich was perfect! Homemade slaw and pickles with a soft bun and crunchy perfectly cooked chicken. I wasn't a huge fan of the fries but the sandwich was enough for me to go back! The service was quick and they were very friendly. I'm looking forward to talking my husband next time we go to Portland! read more
