Built in 1911, the Grand Galvez has a eccentric history. Named after Bernardo de Galvez, the founder of Galveston island and a Spanish military and political hero who fought for America in the American Revolution. The hotel is now a famous haunted hotel and was used in the filming of the limited series "1923." It has weathered storms, change of owners, and renovations and now stands as an elite Marriott owned hotel on the Seawall of Galveston. The hotel retains its beautiful early century charm and luster. It is a go-to destination for vacations and weddings. We recently stayed there for a long vacation for my birthday. The hotel we beautiful and the staff accommodating. This is an upscale resort with a dress code that matches it's exquisite interior. Our room and bed was beautiful and comfortable. I slept well!! The pool was my favorite part. The long lap pool was large enough to for all the guest there without crowding and the swim up bar was a welcome convenience. The bar staff were accommodating and friendly. We spent most of two days at the pool. We wanted to stay for brunch the Sunday we left but we were so stuffed from eating out so much that we just couldn't eat anymore. We live a few hours away so we will be back over and over for weekend getaways on the coast. It's an affordable luxury with beautiful scenery. read more

CLEAN YOUR POOL! That was the cloudiest pool i have seen since my childhood staying in cheap motels off the highway. I wouldn't have gone in, but the AC had gone out in the hotel overnight, so I was overheated. There was zero communication from the hotel about the AC situation until I reached out to Marriot customer service that evening and was "graciously" given a $195.00 credit...less than the cost of a night at the hotel. Also, after waiting at the bar (since I couldn't use my room) while 3 or 4 people who walked up after me were served, I got the snotty rejoinder, "oh, I didn't see you." I didn't realize that I was temporarily invisible. Finally, and this is just a matter of taste, get rid of the antique cars scattered throughout the lobby. They completely detract from what should be a clean-lined Spanish revival/deco feel. I've been coming to this hotel for more than 30 years. Never have I seen it so poorly managed. This is I believe my second ever bad review, but I had to call this nonsense out. read more

Because it made our trip to Galveston a bit nicer than it would have been. --- --- --- We were planning to spend a couple days in Galveston and I was all about going to super budget friendly route. But my wife, always with the champagne tastes was not so convinced. We debated this off and on for a couple weeks, and eventually she won out when she discovered a deal on TikTok for the Grand Galvez. TikTok has deals? Apparently. First impressions walking into the lobby: yeah, it's super nice. Quite a bit nicer than the Hyatt Select we were considering. And quieter in this area. The place almost paid for itself when we accessed the private beach. As you walk up, you're greeted with towels, water and covered seating. These things were especially welcomed during our visit when it was approximately 99 degrees with 278% humidity. As others have shared, the rooms are small, but they're not like Japan small. We had a room with two queen beds (maybe they were doubles?), and felt like we had plenty of space for what we needed. Our 7 year old son slept in one bed with my wife and I got a bed to myself. Maybe if you sharing a room with someone you don't want to be sleeping practically right next to, you'll wish you'd booked a different hotel. But this was great for us. Oddly enough for a historical hotel, they have the world's fanciest shower with so many buttons and knobs that it's hard to even figure out what to do. Ultimately, the shower itself was fine. The water got plenty hot and the pressure was solid, even if the angle was a bit weird. The beds were a bit softer than I'm used to, but comfortable. Because this was a short day trip for us, I actually packed my own pillows, so I can't speak much to those. We opted to valet for $40 a day, but there is a public parking garage right next door to the hotel. It's a nice place. Apparently scour TikTok before booking. read more

This was the first time I've stayed over and gone to the spa, though I've been a longtime patron of their bar. We had a blast! The Spa - Sooo relaxing. The lighting is perfect in the relaxation lounge. There is champagne, snacks, even cucumbers for your eyes. I had a facial first, then the grapefruit massage (TX Ruby). There is so much to the facial; I was delightfully surprised each time I thought it was over that it wasn't over and a new treatment began! Both massage therapists' hands were pure magic. The only things I'd advise them to do differently is: no oil in the scalp massages, and less steam on the face during the facial. (Or ask the client beforehand) The Room - 501, Audra's room, the only option as far as I'm concerned. Spectacular view of the beach and ocean. Bring all your ghost hunting equipment. She preferred to speak through my witchboard, but there is a ouija board already there and set up for you! It was the cherry on top. The rest of the "normal" amenities were great, though I would've preferred a simpler shower (I needed an instruction manual haha), and a simple shower as well as an antique mirror would've matched the rest of the room much better. The interior designer needs help all over the place here... owls and monkeys amid jungle leaves at a beach hotel? No. And they really should've left the cream colour instead of the pink everywhere (the exterior paint especially) but that's just my opinion. The Pool - Fabulous! Perfect temperature and wonderful drinks, albeit a bit on the pricy side. The hot tub was a perfect temperature too, even if you just put your legs in. The hotel is beautiful and clean and the hotel check-in, room service & valet service are all top notch however the pool bar was a little underwhelming for this caliber of hotel. The beer was not cold and actually warm, the piña colada's were not good. The bar counter was dirty with many workers standing around and we had to ask for it to be wiped in order to sit. This was surprising because we chose The galvez based on our previous experiences staying at the Grande in Point Clear, Alabama. We expected this hotel to be in the same category as the Ritz, Four Seasons & The Grande in Point Clear but was disappointed. The pool was closed a day during our stay too which was disappointing! The restaurant was beautiful & the food was good! The bedding was cozy as always but the mattress felt lumpy and cheap. My family and I have been staying here for years whenever we want to get out of the city and spend some time by the water. That being said, I honestly can't say we've ever had a stay that felt like a true 5-star experience. When you first walk in, the hotel makes a great impression. It's beautiful and captures that classic early-1900s historic hotel vibe it's clearly going for. The lobby smells amazing, and everything feels crisp, clean, and welcoming. Unfortunately, that feeling doesn't extend much past the lobby. The hallways leading to the rooms are often muggy and don't smell particularly fresh. Sleep can also be difficult since the walls seem very thin -- you can easily hear hallway conversations and noise from neighboring rooms. If you're paying extra for a beach view room, just know that the "view" may involve looking past a large carport structure, which takes away from the experience. Also, the shower in the room we had this last time was unbelievably small. Taller friends had to duck while in the shower. The bar service has consistently been disappointing over the years. It never seems like there's enough staff, which leads to long waits. Food options within the hotel are also limited, and if you're someone who likes snacks between meals, definitely plan ahead because grab-and-go options are hard to find and restaurant hours aren't especially convenient. We keep coming back because of the location and tradition, but there's definitely room for improvement to make the overall experience match the beautiful first impression. read more

Did not enjoy this hotel. Despite a recent so-called renovation, the quality of the rooms is poor. The beds are old, the air conditioning doesn't cool the room, which smells, and the picture shows the cheap one piece shower unit, which is installed too low. I actually had one of these installed in a house I bought from a flipper; a decent plumber immediately said it had to go. I enjoyed the staff and the on-site coffee bar, but you're overpaying for location and reputation. Stayed M-Th over spring break. Upgraded to beach view. Used valet parking. All the gentlemen were kind. Hotel lobby is beautiful and staff are helpful. Room was wonderful and clean. Comfy bed. Shower was amazing but took a hot minute to figure out buttons. So wish bath towels were larger. Was worried it would be bright in the morning with the huge windows but the curtains were excellent. Loved the little coffee place. Gym had enough things to get a good workout. Loved the towels and fresh fruit. Did not use the pool but it was very large and had a nice hot tub. Oh, I did have some stains on the sheets that were old and the maid took care of it. I will review bar and restaurant on the other yelp specifically for that. Both were great. Last night (7/24/26) the entire hotel lost A/C around 11pm and they offered the night for free to everyone but people using Hotel.com and other outside ways to book, only those who booked on their website. 1/17/2026: We went for a drink at the bar, so I don't have any information about the rooms themselves. However, my friend and I walked the lobby to see the Queen of The Gulf. She is beautiful! 1911 and beautify remodeled over the years. The attention to detail is amazing. The lobby smelled lovely and the decor was phenomenal! She boasts large chandeliers in the hallways and bar area, a beautifully mosaic tiled entry, grand steps to the rooms, a bougie gift shop, and a restaurant called The Monarch. The landscaping is exquisite with tropical plants and a gorgeous fountain in the front lawn entrance. They offer valet parking. Our martinis were $29.00 each (before gratuity), but I think that was THE best martini I've ever had! We will be back, but next time, it will be for a room stay. I can't even imagine how gorgeous the rooms must be, and though this is only a bar review, I felt it necessary. There's no way this place doesn't extend their service and beauty to the rooms. We had an amazing stay from beginning to end. Now, it was Mardi Gras which blocked off the Seawall bc of the parades but once we got to the Galvez, we walked everywhere. The valet service was efficient. The front desk was welcoming and the young lady helping us made sure we had a nice room on the 5th floor for my granddaughter's birthday trip. We recently stayed here for Memorial Day weekend. We wanted a quick trip to Galveston with direct beach access. Galvez delivered! The hotel is historic as it's been built since 1911, it has been renovated but still keeps its old time charm. They have a private beach area that they have chairs and umbrellas set up for hotel guests. Also, they have a decent sized pool if you're tired of the waves. They have plenty of wash off stations for your sandy feet before entering back on the property. Inside it is super classy from the hallways to the chandeliers. The rooms are small but what do you expect from a building over 100 years old. For as many times as I've been to Galveston this hotel made it feel like somewhere else. Highly recommend just for the location and convenience. It is also walking distance to pleasure pier. read more

The queen of the Gulf is one of the top five hotels in Metro Houston / Galveston. It is the perfect spot for Houston folk to get away for a night or two and transport us back to a simple time. It is also a great meeting or celebration location. The hotel was retrovated to old style splendor two years ago and looks amazing! I recently stayed at Grand Galvez and was disappointed with the arrival and check-in experience. When we arrived, no one greeted us or offered assistance with our luggage. Several staff members appeared to ignore us. After waiting for a while, a woman in the valet booth quietly spoke to another attendant, and only then were we asked if we needed help. The guest room was also much smaller than expected and felt cramped, more like a box than a comfortable hotel room. As a Marriott Bonvoy member, I expected at least some acknowledgment of my loyalty status. During check-in, I asked whether my Marriott Bonvoy account was attached to the reservation. The front desk agent simply said, "Yes, I see it," and that was the full extent of the acknowledgment. Stayed at Grand Galvez for a short summer getaway, and it was such a wonderful experience! The rooms were clean, cozy, and comfortable.. perfect for relaxing after a busy day. Funny enough, we unknowingly got booked next to the "haunted" Room 501, but I slept like a log in 503 lol! I was in town for a Royal Caribbean ship inspection (I'm a travel agent), but I brought my little family along so they could enjoy a quick trip too. The location was great.. they were able to walk to the Pleasure Pier, and my husband treated himself to the Sunday brunch while I was on the ship. He said it was amazing! The valet service was smooth and efficient, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The property itself is stunning.. classic charm mixed with beautiful, modern touches. We also rented a beach cabana with umbrellas and chairs, exclusively for hotel guests, and it was such a treat. The staff took great care of us, bringing out truffle fries, fresh fruit, and a couple of cocktails right to our chairs. Here's the deal: The Grand Galvez is not only the Queen of the Gulf, it's the Queen of All Inns -- and worthy of every star that one could give. We came for a night to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Funny thing, our plans eventually took us to Fiji; then we decided on a cruise out of Miami; and finally, we thought that hanging out here and playing cribbage would be totally worthy of a 30-year celebration. This place is decked out. Period. From the crown molding to the fabric wallpaper and accoutrements throughout. It has been around for a long time (even has a historical marker), and it is as swanky as any Ritz Carlton or Grand Kempinksi I've ever had the pleasure of staying at. In addition to the nice digs, the service is spectacular. Sure, it's not cheap. But it's worth every penny, and then some. read more

Gotta do it once, right?! Well, we did -- came, stayed, and had a good time. I'd stay again, but here are some highlights and watch-outs for anyone planning a trip." Pros: Beautiful hotel and perfect location. Beds were comfy, rooms very clean. Blessed with early check-in -- huge plus! Club GiGi is a fun touch (though drinks are a bit limited). Checkout was smooth, and the young woman who helped me (wish I caught her name, maybe Dawn?) was fantastic and friendly. Cons: Check-in staff was nice, but service in between check-in and checkout felt short and unfriendly. Aroma360 scent is overwhelming -- if you have allergies, beware. It's cranked up so strong I found myself testing how long I could hold my breath walking through the lobby. Housekeeping schedule was the biggest frustration: We requested service Sunday morning before leaving so they could make sure it was on the route. Returned before 2 PM -- still not done. Waited it out at the pool and hotel bar -- room finally ready at 5 PM. To top it off, we were left with one bath towel, a handful of smaller towels/washcloths, and dirty glasses still in the room. Mentioned it at checkout, and the staff said they'd "look into it." Bottom line: Gorgeous property, great beds, overall a good time -- but be prepared for super-strong lobby scents and a less-than-ideal housekeeping schedule. Room Info: We stayed in Room 559. Heads up -- the bathroom counter corner sticks out (watch your hip when going potty!) and the shower door doesn't like to stay closed. Could be the door... could be the ghost. This is a beautiful property. Definitely the place for gorgeous wedding photos. It is off season, so it was very quiet, the pool bar was closed, and the restaurant menu was pared down a bit. The property is historic Galveston, over 100 years old, but nicely refreshed, and now part of the Marriott BonVoy group. It is a bit pricey, so I would probably save this for a special occasion. We really enjoyed our stay, and I will absolutely come back "in season" and see what the place is like when everything is lively and open. read more

We stayed at the Grand Galvez for a quick family summer vacation and were overall pleased with the experience. We have 2 kids, 1 is 8yrs old and the other is 3yrs. At first I was very nervous about how kid friendly the hotel was going to be as it has a very elegant/fancy feel. The Rooms: The rooms are quite small but cute. We had a large and very strange shower head contraption that was very challenging to use and had terrible water pressure. Beds were comfy and housekeeping was so kind and accommodating. Poor Area: The pool area is nice but they refused to let my kiddos bring their water bottles in. While I understand not letting adults bring Stanley's and Yetis, I thought it was a little over the top to not allow their bottles of water. Food Options: The restaurant in the hotel is cute but expensive and feels fancy so if you want quick/kid friendly breakfast you are limited to muffins from the coffee shop. (The muffins were house made and very delicious but after two days we wanted something more). The Beach: I really liked having access to a private beach with loungers, umbrellas, and towels. I was disappointed that the little food shack on the beach wasn't opened and I think the hotel could do a better job combing the beach for junk before guests come out. (We found dirty underwear and lots of trash while we were on the beach.) Overall: The hotel staff were so nice and accommodating and there were tons of families staying on property so I can say confidently that you won't be alone if you stay as a family but be aware that the resort really isn't kid centric in nature. I did not stay at the Grand Galvaz so I can't rate the rooms or service, but I did visit the hotel bar this past weekend so this review is for the bar. The lobby of the hotel was gorgeous! The bar was well situated off the lobby with a partial view from cloudy/dirty windows to the ocean. I ordered one of my favorite cocktails (The Last Word) and an appetizer recommended by the bartenders of fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were some of the best friend green tomatoes with well paired sauce that I've ever had. So good! The cocktail was not so perfect. I'm not sure the bartender was that practiced in making it because the taste was a bit off and she first put a lime slice instead of a maraschino cherry that they usually are made with, but it was drinkable. If I ever find myself back in Galveston, I would definitely go order those fried green tomatoes again! read more

Save yourself some money and go to the Tremont Hotel (Yes, also Marriott but different Franchise group). The Galvez has gone downhill since Marriott took over. Grounds had trash all over, was not cleaned up until 11 am. Also booked a Spa day for my wife and they were out of amenities (conditioner) and did not have robes in good condition (gave her one with holes in it). Went to get a meal at the Founders Bar, online menu is dated and is not the same as the lobby bar menu (no big deal). Ordered food and after 45 min. still no food. Bar tender went to the kitchen and the order was never put in. Manager could care less about these issues brought up. Checked out and went to the Tremont, much better hotel that is on top of it. read more

We had a wonderful quick getaway and could not have been happier with our choice. It was such a pleasant surprise! If you're a fan of Chinoiserie, like I am, you'll find the rooms and fabric wall paper swoon worthy! The hotel is meticulously maintained and our room was wonderful--overlooking the ocean. We loved relaxing by the pool and enjoying frosty beverages at the swim up bar. The pink and white chaise lounges and umbrellas are so cute! We ordered a delicious poolside lunch that was light & refreshing. Additionally, there are beautiful pink and white loungers and umbrellas across the street at their private beach area. You'll even find servers bringing food & drinks to your oceanfront loungers. We enjoyed morning coffee made by their barista, Ethan. Ethan was so incredibly friendly, polite and professional. We enjoyed our morning chat with him and appreciated his recommendations. He is such a hardworker! There is an adorable gift shop onsite and there I met Kelly. Kelly was very friendly and she showed me all of the adorable items for my granddaughters and fur babies! They have a great inventory of gift items, clothing and accessories. I even got the cutest dish towel with the Grand Galvez on it to commemorate our trip. Kelly shared with me the brief history of the hotel and it prompted me to take a look at the book in our room. Such a rich history. Incredibly interesting. The service overall was outstanding. So many staff members stopped what they were doing to open the door for me & wish me a good day. Be careful leaving anything in the room. They said they had my toiletry kit. I paid to have them ship it. Then 9 days later they said that they threw it away. They Refunded the shipping cost I paid only after they said they have my item initially. I called to speak to the GM (Darryl) 4 separate times over a week span, and he was "busy" each time. He never called back. It's a historic hotel and that's why we used to like it, but past two stays the place could use some fresh paint and the rooms needs a deep cleaning. read more

We recently stayed at Hotel Galvez in Galveston and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. During our stay, there was a strong smell of marijuana coming through the AC vents in our room. This was especially concerning because my wife is pregnant, and we were trying to avoid any exposure to smoke. To the hotel's credit, we did report the issue, and management responded by going up to the floors to investigate. They were able to locate the guests who were smoking, which we appreciated. However, the smell had already impacted our stay, and it made it difficult for us to feel comfortable in the room. We ended up having to leave the room at times just to get fresh air, including going down early in the morning to avoid the smell. While the property itself is beautiful and the staff did make an effort to address the situation, the overall experience was affected by this issue. We hope the hotel takes stronger preventative measures in the future to ensure a more comfortable and safe environment for all guests. read more

I had not been to Galveston before this visit, and I chose Hotel Galvez because of its history and grandeur, and I was not disappointed. The hotel was built in 1911 after the great 1900 hurricane that took many lives. It was part of Galvestons attempt to restore and rebuild as a resort destination. And they did it well with this hotel. It is grand! The vintage elevators, beautiful chandeliers, and the beautiful wood walls in the lobby and stairs make you feel like you have stepped back in time. There is an undeniable elegance to this hotel, and it is the only reason I would come back to Galveston again. I want to say this...I have stayed at many elegant hotels, to include the Ritz Carlton, and my experience here would definitely be at the top of my hotel experiences. Was it perfect, no, but it was everything I hoped it would be and it exceeded my expectations. It was charming, elegant, filled with history, very comfortable, welcoming, and it had a somewhat private beach where I could sit and enjoy the beauty of the Gulf.
