Talk about waiting. We waited a half hour to get a table. During this time I observed a family in bicycle helmets enter, and get seated immediately, I assume we could have called ahead to avoid the initial wait. When we finally got a table they set us behind a giant pole that had coat hooks all over it. Then we waited more. Then waited some more. Then a manager and I made eye contact as I was staring out into the abyss hoping anyone would acknowledge us. I see the manager saying something to the hostesses, then a waitress appears, tells us with a nervous laugh she didn't see us behind the pole as she gives it a tap, and no one told her we were there. We say we are ready to order as we've been sitting so long already. We almost memorized the menu, I said silently to myself. We order, she says she'll be back with water and silverware. The appetizer, comes out in record time, I have to assume the manager put our order to the top of the pile. So, now we have an appetizer, and no napkins silverware, or waters still. We ordered hot pretzels, so I wanted to wait some more... for the napkins. The water, napkins and silverware gets to the table, we finish our hot pretzels, and then our food arrives. I had really been wanting to come here after hearing my parents talk about it. I was not let down. The food was fantastic as well as the service. We had a large party of about 20 people and the waitress did great serving everyone. There is a good selection if beer, wine, and mixed drinks tho choose from. The menu is filled with great tasting food. I got a burger and fries and enjoyed it. Some things were a bit pricey, but we didn't really mind with how much we enjoyed our time here. Grand River Brewery is a spacious, modern, typical brewery space that sits in the cute downtown area of Marshall. Plenty of shops and whatnot to walk through if that's your thing. The beers were ok, nothing spectacular or "I have to drink this more often" inducing. The IPAs were decent but not all that high on the pucker factor. An interesting brew is a dark IPA made with squid ink. It was good. They also have their own vodka, but I didn't try that. As for the food, it was fair. The "Award Winning Grand River Poutine" misplaced its reward. It was served barely luke-warm, one giant clump of melted cheese, a conservative dribbling of gravy, and a bit of scallions scattered about. Maybe it was a bad day, but it certainly wasn't worth the money. The Smoked White Fish Chowder sounded wonderful, described as "Lake Superior smoked whitefish, potatoes, applewood smoked bacon, sleeping bear winery Chardonnay, cream, and herbs." Again, a bit disappointed. The flavors were decent but the overall composition of the soup seemed to be of a leftover feel, the cream not really smoothly worked in. The service was wonderful as our waitress was very nice and accommodating. Plenty of merch from which to choose if you are into that from places like this. read more

Came here once before and had a burger and left feeling pretty "meh" about GRB - especially since I'm not a craft beer aficionado, so I am not really moved by their brewed drink selection. Went back recently and decided to venture away from the "typical" brewhouse fare. Went with a personal favorite (fish & chips) along with a cup of the trout chowder - wow, was it a delicious meal! Trout chowder was a unique, tasty item that I would love to eat again! Fish & chips was solid, flavorful, and had great breading and tartar sauce (fries were fine, but nothing special). This is a great restaurant. They source everything locally in Michigan and make everything from scratch. If you go here you must try the Reuben Fritters. They are amazing. The cost is a little pricey but that is to be expected when you source everything locally and not getting your food from GFS. We had a great time and will definitely be coming back. Ok so we love our Ruben ball appetizers. We get these all the time. My husband had the bacon pimento cheese burger and he liked that. I had the snowball ok so let's just say 99% of the $10.00 drink was ice shocked and disappointed. Don't get me wrong I liked the drink a lot - I had two I order to get a full drink. The atmosphere is very nice. Love it being downtown in an old building that is well maintained. The beer is pretty good. The downside is the prices on the food are beyond ridiculous. $19 for a wrap and fries. They play games by offering half orders of everything. The half order price is what the full order price should be. I would come back only for beer, not food. I am not sure how people can afford to eat here. OK. Got our shots, ready to hit new brewpubs (at least new to me). For a road trip headed for the pubs in Marshall. Landed at the Grand River. Although they did not have the staff to serve us outside the seats at the bar were well spaced and all the servers were wearing masks. We had a beer and the pretzel and the mustard and beer cheese. The pretzels were hot, the mustard was good but I have to say the beer cheese was lacking, it still had shreds of unmelted cheese which might be how it is supposed to be there but didn't appeal to me. They also brew their own spirits and have small batches of stuff like cinnamon whiskey. I would certainly return. See you there. read more

Sad to say that this place has gone downhill. We had brunch there today, and my husband's corn beef hash was horrible. The beef wasn't shredded and it was served with chunks of potatoes and stale toast. I ordered the breakfast power bowl and the rice was undercooked and the whole plate was tasteless. Fantastic place, great beer selection, different types of margaritas, I had the Christmas margarita actually I had 2 of them. The food was amazing and the service was great. We will definitely be back even if we have to drive 35 minutes just to eat. The town is so beautiful to walk around admiring the architecture of the buildings all around. This was the last stop on a spontaneous Friday afternoon brewery tour. I love beer but it doesn't love me, so I was happy to end the afternoon with some red wine. My guy and I split the brisket dinner and it was very tender, we really enjoyed it! That's saying a lot considering he's a grill master and knows how to cook meat properly! Good visit outside of a uneven/rocky table. Love to steampunk style decor and the openness of the place. Not much of a brewery connoisseur but out of the local ones I've been to this is my favorite. I had the chicken sammy which had good flavor. Could have used some more spices to jazz it up a bit more but overall it was a decent sandwich. I had it with the house fries which were half crispy/soggy. Since I'm not a beer connoisseur I asked the waitress to recommend something that tasted like Bud Light or Miller Lite beer . She recommended the lake rat beer which had a similar taste to what I was expecting . There were several booths that were separated buy tapestry to give you a little more privacy. They had a decent-sized bar with a few TVs for viewing. Even though service was a little slow our experience was still good and will go back to try something else. read more

To cut to the chase, this place has excellent burgers and service. James at the bar does a great job of attending to the customers. When I first came, he was suggesting a certain cider for me. I chose another selection, which was good, but after I tried the cider, I quickly learned he was spot on with regards to what drink I would like. Next time I had the cider which was excellent. I had the regular burger both of my visits, and it was so tasty given the different selection of high quality types of beef that make a really delicious taste and texture. I will look forward to try the other menu options next time. April was very accommodating to a special request that I had that she really didn't have to do. Loved the big screen with all the beers and their ABV's. Great Old Rocker beer! Out of this world wonderful pulled pork Nachos, very good pork and veggie tacos. This is a place we will return to. The salad was fresh and very good. They're trying hard in the kitchen, but ugh. It ends up being greasy heavy-handed foodwith little subtlty. The fries were tedious, old tasting, and hardly enjoyable. A plus that they emphasize local ingredients. If you prefer TV while dining, this is the place for you. Half your table will be distracted. No seating without TV prominent. It's a cold corporate place. It's calculated and optimized for profit, not enjoyability. I feel no desire to return. Two days later, In hearing from the owner/manager. He seemed genuinely concerned and willing to improve. I'm changing it from two, to three stars. Last minute decision to try Grand River, and it didn't disappoint. Nice place, not over crowded and comfortable. They've done a nice job with the building. It was Taco Tuesday so I went with brisket, pulled pork and perch tacos. They were all pretty good, but the pulled pork was the best. Great flavor, tender and juicy. The girlfriend had the spatchcock chicken with brussel sprouts. cooked perfectly, great, crispy skin, very moist and tender with wonderful flavor. While we didn't have any this time, they have a huge beer selection that seems to have something for everyone. Staff was very attentive, polite and helpful. Okay so I know everyone is dealing with post-COVID and good help is hard to find right now. But training can go a long way. I have to say our host and order runners were wonderful!! Food was fantastic, but our waitress left much to be desired . She let us sit without acknowledging for 10 minutes...the host came to check on us and then she was another 10 minutes. No table service when the appetizer was delivered and she didn't even come check on us until after the meal was delivered. I had to go to the host station to ask for napkins and table service. Food was great...but stay away from the dark hair waitress with the southern accent!!! read more

They advertised fresh smelt. Not many locations in this area offer this seasonal delight. The atmosphere is very pleasant and relaxing. The service is very good. The 1/2 lb of smelt, accompanied by fries and slaw did not disappoint and were better than expected. Driving from Battle Creek, I have been there before on several occasions and have no second thoughts on going back. The food, service and beer are consistently quite good.
