Must stop roadside souvenir shop! They have a huge redwood tree called the Grandfather Tree! That alone is worth the stop! It's also a nice area to stop and stretch before hitting the road again. They have restrooms and there's a quite large souvenir shop with all kinds of amazing trinkets! Customer service there was nice and the area is clean and tidy! Love it! read more

Fun stop right along the 101 on your way to or from Humboldt County. It's located about 20 minutes south of the southern entrance of Avenue of the Giants. I'm not sure of their exact hours since I didn't see anything posited but on a Saturday they were already closed at 4:30. I was able to stop by when they were open again around Sunday morning (I arrived around 11:45 a.m.) It's easy to get a full shot of the magnificent Grandfather Tree and it's quite unique in its multiple trunks and full foliage. Around the grounds there are interesting wood carvings, a gift shop and ample parking. It's a great place to stop en route to your other adventures in the area and stretch your legs. Gift shop had some cute items as well as drinks and snacks. Next door to it was the One Log house and gift shop. Didn't get to stop by there but made a mental note to check it out next time, read more

Stopped here on our way to drive the Avenue of the Giants auto tour. We were enticed by the many cool wood carvings you can see from the road...and, of course the ginormous Grandfather Tree! The gift shop has so many items, from souvenir mugs, stickers, magnets and t-shirts to hand carved birdhouses and decorative trees. Overall a nice stop to get out and stretch your legs. Plenty of photo opportunities. Would highly recommend. read more

This is not a spot to see one of the largest redwood trees, but it also is a cute little stop. The tee is located in front of a shop that seeks things from cloths. Coasters. Stickers, patches, and wood carvings. It looks like someone carves there as there is a cover with an active project. There is a gas station across the way too if you are leaving town and need a fill up. read more

That's one huge tree! We were at the gift shop next door and on the way back to the car I wandered over to look at that big grandfather tree, looking up it seemingly breaks through the clouds... I didn't go into the gift shop so I cannot review that. It definitely looked cool so I will have to check it out next time... But I do reccomend you stop and stretch. Grandfather Tree was a unique and cool little roadside stop while I explored along famous Highway 101, which ran up and down the Northern California Coast. I had no idea this statuesque tree even existed....but while I was driving 101, the large signs stating Grandfather Tree was located just off the main road had my interest peeked. Also, right next door to this Grandfather Tree was another roadside attraction known as One Log Cabin. And actually, I camped out for the evening at Richardson Grove right nearby to these landmarks. Starting my day out early after camping, I came straight here to Grandfather Tree. It's free of charge. Yes...how great was that. Usually they get you for a fee or something. Like at One Log cabin, I believe it was $5 to walk inside it. But yeah...for being first thing in the morning, me and Grandfather Tree spent some quality time together, lol. Usually, ya know...these touristy spots can get so crowded with people that's it's virtually impossible to get uninterrupted photos of you and the tree. People have zero consideration for others taking pictures. Regardless, fortunate for me....I had Grandfather Tree all to myself! I was able to grab some terrific pictures of this 265 foot tall tree that's 1800 years old. In my pictures, Grandfather Tree was so tall and bushy that I couldn't even capture the entirety of it. It was incredible how fluffy the leaves were and how extended the branches appeared. They practically covered most of the tree's bark. How extraordinary and how cool! I was impressed. Right next door was a little gift shop. It was actually open when I arrived here but I didn't find anything in particular to purchase. So...I felt a little awkward leaving the gift shop after I had just hung out with Grandfather Tree for 20 minutes taking loads of pictures, lol. Of note, also...the sun in early morning was just rising and it shined down perfectly on Grandfather Tree. I couldn't have asked for a better setting for picture taking. Though...I could envision in late afternoon with the sun setting that there'd be a haze or glare staring people in the eyes...views that may not be nearly as colorful and dramatic for photography. So again, I'd certainly recommend visiting first thing in the morning. And...It really started my day off on the right note. From here I continued my journey south along Highway 101 towards Leggett and another tourist attraction in the land of redwoods known as...Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree. Yes...I'm a sucker for all these roadside stops, hehehe. And for those who may be headed north from Grandfather Tree, the best is yet to come. Actually, your Redwood's adventure is just getting started. Don't forget to check out Shine Drive-Thru Tree, Avenue of the Giants at Humboldt State Park, and many other State Parks within Redwood National Park...including side attraction...Trees of Mystery. This whole journey either way you go (north or south) is a forest lover's dream! read more

Kind of frustrating when we ask the person behind the counter a question but she didn't even hear us because looking at her cell phone was more important. This was on Saturday, 9-15-23 around 2pm. Even when she waited on us, it was a chore for her to be friendly. Next time, we will just drive by and not spend any money. Plenty more shops down the road. read more

GRANDFATHER TREE is the name of a gift shop located on Route 101, about twelve miles south of Garberville, CA. "Grandfather Tree" is also the name of a huge redwood tree located next to the parking lot in front of this gift shop. The Eel River is nearby, about 500 feet to the east of Grandfather Tree. From Leggett (way to the south) up to Fernbridge (way to the north), the Eel River is close to Route 101, and typically, the river and Route 101 run parallel to each other. WHAT I BOUGHT. If you think that Founders Grove in Humboldt State Park, the Big Trees Loop Trail near Bull Creek in Humboldt State Park, and the drive-though tree at Myers Flat are all magical places, then you will likely find the inside of Grandfather Tree gift shop to be a magical place. I was so amazed by the high quality and variety of the gifts that I said to the clerk, "My problem here is not to figure out what to buy, but instead it is to figure out what not to buy." The gifts that I bought included a snow globe with a bear inside, a plastic sticker reading, "WARNING BIGFOOT IN THIS AREA," and a colorful round cloth patch. I taped the plastic sticker inside the rear window of my Honda. The snow globe is filled with water and, when turned upside down, the snow on the ground gets dispersed and it swirls around the bear and then falls back to the ground. Mounted near the outside edge of the globe are five redwood trees (each 3 inches tall). The treetrunks are painted brown and, above that, the detailed foliage is painted green. The globe and the trees are mounted on a pedestal. The pedestal is molded in the shape of a tree stump. The bear is not scary. The bear's mouth is closed. The colorful cloth patch has a detailed illustration of Bigfoot, and the printing, "BIGFOOT LIVES." The color on this beautiful patch is not from paint. Instead, the color comes from the colors of the individual threads used to make the patch - - - tan thread for the ground, brown thread for Bigfoot, black thread showing outlines of tufts of Bigfoot's hair, red thread for the images of 3 redwood trees, and green thread for the foliage on ten redwood trees in the background. PHOTOGRAPHS. Attached are some of my photographs, and most of these show animals carved out of wood. These animals are displayed next to the parking lot in front of the gift shop. ANOTHER WONDERFUL TREE You're goig to start to recognize a theme AS you begin driving North on US-101. Here's a hint: lots of big redwood trees. I do recommend that you take the time and visit each touristy spot that you can. They are all unique and pretty amazing. It's great to get outside and stretch in between the long road stretches, and there are lots of wonderful opportunities for pictures. In addition, most of the stops have gift shops that are fun to walk through. You'll start to notice overlapping themes in these at some point as well - like when you start walking through all the stores in Chinatown, San Fran, and realize, they're probably all shopping at the same place for the goods they sell.... But I see nothing wrong with that. Stop here and enjoy yourself. But arrive early. Because that's when this town starts shutting down. read more

Such a bummer to see the changes made to this shop that used to be a hidden gem. Back in the day this was run by an old hippy woman that had sheep skins, the most amazing jewelry and Native American Indian made boots. It has completely switched hands and the music went from the spirit of the Grandfather Tree type vibes to pop rock and lame commercial type gifts inside the shop. So disappointed but at least the Grandfather Tree is still there holding the energy to some extent. read more

I love this little stop area. The Grandfather Tree is a must-see when in the Redwoods and is a great family photo opportunity. The tree is massive! My kids loved it. It's free to see and is a lot more impressive than the nearby drive-through tree you have to pay for. The entire shopping/tourist area around the Grandfather Tree is also great. There are several shops in this stop area. Most of them are surprisingly affordable. The shop right next to the Grandfather Tree is my favorite. We bought a beautiful wood carving of a greenman for only $45.00. At home (in the bay area), something similar could have easily cost well over a hundred bucks. Right across the way from the tree is the "One Log Cabin" which is also a fun spot to check out. Unlike the Grandfather Tree, you have to pay to see it, but it's only a dollar per person to go in and kids under twelve are free. The gift shop/grill by the One Log Cabin is also very reasonable and has a decent souvenir selection for kids. My boys were drawn to the rubber band guns and animal carving sling-shots right away. The grill also serves an excellent Mexican Mocha coffee. The handmade Native American goods shop next door to the One Log Cabin place is also worth the look. Everything in there is pretty pricey, but it's all handmade so the cost is understandable. Native American decor and clothing isn't really my style, but it was fun just looking around. All in all, this area is a great place to stop, take pictures, shop, and grab a bite to eat. I highly recommend it if you're planning a trip to the Redwoods. read more
