Roadside attraction [Garberville CA] I know it's a tourist trap but it was very cool to see inside the log house. We checked inside the gift shop to purchase tickets at $2/person. You will be given a ticket with a 4-digit code plus a separate code for the bathroom. The gift shop also serves coffee and some food items and has a separate room in the back that serves as a dispensary. Yes! This is Humboldt County after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If driving along Highway 101 towards Avenue of the Giants, it's pretty hard to miss seeing The One Log House, located next door to the Grandfather Tree. It's made from a 2100 year old gigantic redwood tree in crafted in 1946. It took 8 months to gut and hollow out the room and is 7-feet high and 32-feet long. I was able to walk inside nicely (I'm 5'2" hehehe). The log house toured the US in its early years until it settled in Redwood Country in 1999. Inside is just like a home complete with a kitchen, bedroom and living space. It seemed a perfectly livable residence. But anyway, there's the kitchen complete with various spices and salt, a breakfast nook, dual beds, reading tables, bench, books and magazines. I couldn't resist stepping in to check it out. Likely among the least life-altering experiences I've ever had, this beyond-tourist attraction would normally not fall under my radar. However, a certain nostalgia must have come over me as this is the type of spot my dad would have made us stop at during a family road trip in the Rambler station wagon to film one of his home movies. I just drove through the Drive-Thru Tree in Leggett, so I was game. I paid my $2 in the gift shop where the sales clerk looked exceedingly bored. He gave information on an as-needed basis. What he eventually told me to do is walk outside to see the one log. En route was a lot of redwood souvenirs before entering the hollowed-out redwood log. No docent. It was like going to an open house with an absentee real estate agent. Tourist trap but glad it only cost $2 per entry. I like how they protect it with a special code once you pay the entrance fee in the gift shop. It was cool that they set it up as a real functioning household too so that you can get a full experience. Very quick to see but a great stop over. read more

I'm writing this review solely for the One Log House - as in the actual kitschy structure sitting by the side of the road. I didn't order any coffee, buy any corny gifts, or go into the pot dispensary (which alone would bump up any review by one star anyway). We passed by this on the way up to the Humboldt Redwood State Park and made certain that we wouldn't go past without stopping on the way back home. Entry is a mere $2 per adult and free for kids. For us, it was money well spent to enjoy a little bit of the wondrous roadside curiosities that, in my opinion, exemplify the American spirit. As small as the place appears from the outside, it actually appears to be a reasonably habitable abode, though it's not clear that there was ever a functional latrine despite the door indicating its presence. And I kid you not, it actually felt more spacious than my brother-in-law's former Manhattan apartment. So yeah, it's a gimmick and a tourist trap, but it's the definition of Americana and well worth a visit. USA! USA! USA! read more

If you need a place to stop and stretch your legs this WAS the spot. $2 to get the code to the door it was previously Family owned and operated... now you can tell the dispensary has taken it over. You won't miss this store. There's a big sign that says ONE LOG HOUSE. It's pretty generic inside as well as outside. carved stuff from redwood trees. What caught my attention was a piece of wood that varies in size that's wrapped in plastic they call BURL. It's the tumor like growth on the trunk of a redwood tree. Apparently it doesn't hurt the RWT when you remove these guys. They practically grow anywhere too as long as you give it water. It craves water! I thought that was cool. You can grow your own RWT at home. This store has really clean bathroom. They serve good strong coffee and they leave you alone to shop around. I likey! read more

I can turn any roadtrip into a fun-filed, historic site seeing, multi-stop vacation that takes twice as long as it should. So, if you have patience and interest, I'm can plan a killer trip and fit it all into two days. The past weekend we worked our way up the Northern California Coast, stopping at beaches along the coastal highway, landmarks, and then tons of random spots that sight-seeing tourists just can't miss. One of these was the One-Log Cabin in Garberville. Admission is $1 each and you pay inside the gift shop. Since my last visit up that direction, the gift shop has introduced a cannabis dispensary next to their coffee shop. If you're over 18 it's worth popping your head in, but prices for items (on the low-end) were about 4x as high as the Bay Area. The coffee shop was great and we ordered Mexican Mocha's ($5.20 each) and Chai Tea on our way up and again going back down to the Bay Area. They sell Humboldt featured clothing and other items like snacks and knives and gifts to take home. The One Log Home itself is just right outside and is really neat. It's definitely worth the $1 admission! The tiny home is adorable and has electricity and plumbing inside (the lights work but not sure if there's actually running water). Two little beds and great deco complete the Log Home. Don't miss this if you're driving through! read more

Watched them grill the bacon in front of me. It was nice to visit the Grandfather tree and other souvenir shop next door too. A must-visit in the Avenue of the Giants. read more

Neat little tourist attraction right on Hwy 101. We've dropped by a couple of times on our trips through this beautiful part of California. Doesn't cost too much to check out the One Log House. It's cool to check out at least once in your lifetime. It is really created from a Redwood tree! It looks like a tree house on wheels. A motorhome of sorts. The gift shop is nice. Each visit, we have purchased a tiny redwood tree for less than 10 bucks. They make great unique gifts for loved ones. Take the time to drop in to One Log House. Terrific place to browse and learn more about Redwood trees. They have clean restrooms too. read more

Don't bother stopping unless you need the dispensary! This is no longer the "Family" place to take your children or grandchildren while on a road trip. I was very disappointed. The business was taken over at the beginning of 2019 and now has a marijuana dispensary attached to it. I'm not someone that cares much what others do as long as it doesn't affect me or my family, but when we stopped here there were people out back in the picnic area smoking their purchases. Not great for the kids, but ok, move on inside. That was when I was told not to worry that there is a guard by the door to keep children out. Nice idea, but the guard was asleep so he was no good at stopping my grandson from wandering in. The whole reason that I had stopped there was to show the kids the One Log Cafe. It was a planned stop as part of a 2 day road trip through the redwoods. It is now locked up and you can't even see in the windows. The main attraction is no longer available. All that is there is a gift shop and the dispensary. There is supposed to be a cafe inside, which there is, but don't expect service in a timely manner. As this was the last stop for the day and very late in the afternoon, we were just going to get some ice cream. After waiting 20 minutes for someone to even come to the counter, I was told that it would be at least another 10-15 minutes before she could get to our order and we were next in line. She walked into the back room not to be seen again, so we gave up and left. The gift shop was nice. The kids wondered, with explicit instructions after the first miss in wondering, while I did the waiting in line. They brought back some nice things that we had not seen in other places. At the end of the day, I spent zero money there and it was a waste of 30-40 minutes. Don't bother stopping unless you just want to get high. In which case, you will most likely enjoy it. read more

Went thru the gift shop & picked up some redwood burls to take home so we can "grow our own redwood right in the comfort of our own home!" This house is pretty old but cute. You have to pay $1 per person. The house has a kitchen, two beds, dining area, and a living room. They sell some redwood bird houses and other items. There's cobwebs all over the items, making it seem like it's not taken care of. They also opened a dispensary in a little room. Next door is the grandfather tree which is pretty big. It looks like there's a shop but since there's not much business, it was closed. read more

If you're travel from south to Eureka on 101 Highway, you gotta stop by this place for pictures and souvenirs. Everywhere I travel, I gotta find a gift shop in the area to buy SHOT GLASSES. Took pictures, bought shot glasses and SPOON for my sister in law. She is a SPOON collector. And I bought buffalo jerky. Not great taste for the price but gotta try for first time. This review is SOLELY for the actual One Log House experience -- not the gift shop or coffee or anything. The One Log House is one of those roadside tourist trappy things -- "SEE THE TINY HOUSE BUILT FROM ONE LOG! ONLY $1!!!" I'm a total sucker for that kind o'shit, so I ponied up the cash and went in. I'm here to tell you, this is one of those cases where it's actually worth the price! It was pouring rain, and the One Log House kept me warm and dry during my visit. Plus, it was really cute inside, with all kinds of funky vintage decor and old Reader's Digests and whatnot. I seriously could have snuggled up in the bed and read old Reader's Digests all day...or until Sasquatch busted in to violate me! Anyway, I stayed about 10 minutes and that was pushing it. I'd say if you're interested in the whole Tiny House phenomenon, or are into trailers/RVs/etc, you'll find the $1 totally worth it. Otherwise, you might prefer to spend your $1 in the gift shop. read more

I wanted to like this place, I really really did, but the experience of seeing a very cool oddity was over taken by rude people. We came in at around 4:50 and paid our dollars for the four of us to see the log home. A lady opened the door for us to get in and view it. We were in there for a few minutes when she opened the door again and gave a look like we are done! I asked the wife who that was and why did she rush us, she said because they close at 5. Ok fair, but why take our money, send us on our way and I will visit another time when I can check things out. On the way out, I looked at watch and it was like 4:58 and I asked the kids if they wanted ice cream, as we walked in to the gift shop we can hear the lady behind us, huffing. OOOOOK take your ass home if you don't want to be here. Thankfully the lady that scooped our ice cream was nice. Here is the last of my rant, because I did see it off and on during the weekend. When you are a tourist attraction and you make money from the tourist, please don't treat them like crap. I can see it differently if we were asses and jumping on the house of causing a scene, but we just wanted to be treated with same respect a local would get. read more

Wall to wall knick knacks....be it moccassins or turquoise rings, arrowheads or coasters. The sales woman was really quite animated and stoked on her job ....(and the jerky). We stop at the One Log House whenever we're traveling to San Francisco from Eureka, which is fairly often. It's the perfect spot, timing wise, for a bathroom break and the bathrooms there are about the cleanest you'll find. Not long ago they used to offer sandwiches- made to order- but they stopped doing that which was a disappointment to both the wife and I. In their place they offer pre- made burritos, which are ok but not real exciting and I generally pass on those. I'd prefer the sandwiches. I tried their hot dog meal one time and I'll agree with the other reviewer that was not exactly pleasant. They also offer a number of other snacks and drinks. Their iced tea is a bit pricey for me but, since I'm usually finishing off my fast food place iced tea from Eureka by the time we get there, I've found they'll refill your larger iced tea container from Eureka for a fair enough price. I'm very happy with that A nice place to stop and we'll continue to stop there on the way to San Francisco. read more

When I first walked in it was very cozy and calm, the gentlemen who made my drink was very kind and was carrying a conversation like he was actually interested in what I was saying, not just trying to buy time. Good hotdogs..however, today my husband & I stopped here & were rudely ignored for a few minutes.. we got my hotdog meal & a macchiato...after we were done we decided to get a small ice cream in cups (not cone).. it cost $2.75 per ice cream..the "scoop" was the size of a rounded tablespoon..yes, really & it was nearly $3 each!! The guy was rude & said "well that's a scoop." We were pissed. Outside we spoke briefly to one of the owners, who dismissed us completely by saying he would be right back to talk about how we were just ripped off & treated so rudely...after waiting for 35 minutes for him to return we gave up & left..we were traveling & had to drive for 3 more hours to get home.. a bit of advice... Get the hot dog (even though they microwave them) they r all beef & very good..but don't buy a bite of ice cream for $2.75 for a small or $5.75 for a large... absolutely a rip-off..they lost us as customers.. read more

The gift shop is a little better than usual tourist trappy place (they do make good milkshakes though!) with all the usual junque you need to prove how much fun you had on your trip through the Redwoods...but the one log house, decorated a la late 1940's when it was put together, is a charming little reminder of simpler times, well worth a short tour through....I'd hate to have more than two people living in these close quarters, but in these hard economic times maybe we should be hollowing out our own log homes! read more

This is a quintessential, kitschy old-school tourist stop in the Redwood Empire and definitely worth at least one visit when driving by it. There is a food counter that offers hot dogs, etc., and coffee drinks, a gift shop, and the One Log House. The house is worth at least one visit at only $1 a person, is quite neat inside, and is a traditional, fun little part of any true touristy experience of the redwoods. The food counter serves decent hot dogs and pretty good coffee drinks. The drink range is limited and not to quality, but what we have gotten is certainly good to have as a refreshment for the drive, hot drinks for when it's cold and wet or cold drinks for when it's hot (which in the summer can be fairly often in this inland stretch of the Redwood Empire, in contrast to, say, Eureka). read more

My wife and I stopped there on our way up 101. the coffee was OK, not bad but nothing special and we also got cheese & sausage croissants. These were very disappointing. They seemed like microwaved fast food. However, the reason I'm giving it 1 star is because when my wife picked up our food from the counter, the foil they were wrapped unraveled and one of our sandwiches fell on the floor right in front of the register. Stop for a minute and think, what would you expect the clerk to say? I think that just about anywhere, they would've apologized and gotten us another one. Instead, this woman said, "You dropped it so I can't replace it." She did offer to microwave the germs off it! I couldn't believe it. I was pleasantly surprised at how many other interesting places there were along 101, (like Pour Girls Coffee a little farther south). My advice, give this over-priced place a miss. read more

Well, actually it is in Piercy, not Garberville. I'm a local (land in Piercy, business in G'ville). Every so often my partner and youngest kid and I get the hankering to be all touristy and try out places as though we hadn't lived here most of our lives (all of my children's lives, for sure). So this Saturday, with Reggae on the River going strong down at Benbow, my partner had a craving for coffee. Um, yeah, we can get coffee (very good coffee too) in Garberville. But partner also really kinda wanted to take a look at the Reggae scene, down at the former lake (now still river). It's the last year at Benbow (next year back to French's Camp, pretty close to the One Log Hut and the coffee shop here). So sure, I was game. We closed up our own shop and piled into the truck. Looking at the recycling and garbage in the back of the truck I informed partner that we were really, really unlikely to pass as tourists anywhere. We waved at the Reggae scene and continued onward. We parked at one end of the One Log House Gift Shop parking lot and sauntered in, trying to instill excitement in youngest child by promises of something neat to eat or drink (French fries usually work, but in this case there weren't any.) When the nice guy at the counter informed us there were places in G'ville with fries I had an inner joy. Hey, he thought we were tourists. Maybe from...I don't know, Appalachia. We had respectively, coffee (partner), Mexican hot chocolate with whipped cream (kid and me), muffins (blueberry and apple maple) and a slice of pumpkin bread (my very wise choice, it was delicious). We ate these sugar loaded treats out under a wisteria arbor near the slabs of redwood and the carved bears, and it was way pleasant. (the place offers many ice cream options and burritos of various sorts as well) The bathrooms were spotless, and on the wall of the gift shop are many fascinating photos of the region from times gone by. The gift shop items are the usual fare, but well displayed. Certainly if you are longing for a pleasant stop this is worth a try. read more

Why I'd review a gift shop is beyond me??? The log house is the real attraction here. Fun little buck spent touring the camper / house made of a real redwood log. Interesting. I could see myself doing some crazy thing like this. Since I mentioned the gift shop. The staff seemed friendly enough although, I couldn't tell if they jumped out and greeted me above all others because they thought I was going to steal something or they were just overly friendly? It was just a bit odd. OK, it was really really odd! I found the redwood items a bit pricey. Quite a bit more pricey than the place next door where the grandfather tree is. For years we have stopped by the One Log house on our way to SF, a few times per month and have enjoyed getting coffees. This last stop was awful. We waited over 25 minutes for two cups of coffee and we were the only two customers! We watched the server talk to someone about the work schedule and watched him looking at his phone numerous times while we waited. The coffees were lukewarm!! Next time we are driving a little further down the road to the Pour Girls in Laytonville. They serve good hot coffee in a reasonable amount of time. read more

We stopped here to check out the One Log House and decided to go in and grab a coffee. The lady that helped us was super friendly and fast. My husband and I ordered a black bean burrito with cheese, one macciato coffee and a white chocolate mocha coffee. Not knowing what to expect I have to say the burrito was amazing! The coffee was perfect! And we couldn't have been happier with it all. The little shop has a lot of cool stuff to buy and worth the stop. The Log House was cool and something to stop and see. Very racist place. We stopped to buy something to eat and buy souvenirs. We got a very cold reception there. It was very early and my daughter and I were the only ones there. We said good morning and we were not acknowledged. We were just being watched by them. We are white of Mexican decent. They never asked if they could help us.
