My family and I got treated out by our Uncle Kevin to Grandmas Restaurant. Immediately we had a table waiting for us but shortly after we realized we were going to have to move cause my baby girl Piper would be in the walkway so we moved to a different table where she wouldn't be accidentally kicked or bumped. Our waitress was quick and attentive to all our needs. If you've ever stopped and looked at a Grandmas menu you know it sure hasn't changed since probably Grandma herself was working here. It has so many classic meals such at the "Original Bicycle Burger" with fresh cut fries and the Philly cheese steak sandwich mmmm mmmm I went with a Caesar salad with Grilled chicken. The price is a little steep for a salad but I'm on a diet so have to get something healthy. It didn't take long before we all had our food. I ordered the Center Cut 10 oz. steak. This dinner comes with an onion ring served on the steak, breadstick, choice of potato, and side salad. My salad had just the right amount of dressing. The steak was alright. It wasn't seasoned well and tough to chew in some sections. Grandma's isn't a steak restaurant so I didn't hold it to high standards. It was not cooked evenly, and seasoning was light. I found it interesting that my steak was served in a plate that wasn't flat - it made cutting the steak into smaller pieces a challenge. My server was great! She was almost too attentive by checking on me every 5 minutes, but I am not going to knock this place down for that. It was a very quiet restaurant, located next to a Target and McDonalds. It was kind of interesting to see the hostess wear jeans with a hoodie, which is probably the norm for a small town like Virginia. Can't give it 5 stars because I can't say it's anything to write home about or recommend to friends and I wouldn't likely make a trip back there. That being said, it met the one and only need we had which was to try a wild rice burger. As we traveled through this little part of the country we kept hearing about wild rice as a prominent ingredient and in particular in veggie burgers. Being vegetarian we've had our share of a variety of veggie burgers and were excited to try a new variety. Upon asking around, grandma's version came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. I thought orders were taken on a first come first serve basis. We were given menus and then sat there and waited for the waitress to return so we could order. Five more tables filled all coming in after us. Their orders were taken, while the waitresses continued to walk by our table. After waiting a half hour we finally got up and left. We love Grandma's Duluth location on Miller Hill, so we decided to stop for dinner. It's kind of hidden away by a Target and a Caribou coffee shop. I'm wondering if it wasn't a fast food place at one point - it looks kind of run down from the outside. Inside, however, the décor is nice. I love the antique signs they have all over. The creamy wild rice soup is amazing. My husband and I each got a bowl and it was so good, I wish I'd just ordered a second bowl for dinner. I ordered the chicken strips and they were so hard, they hurt my teeth! I felt bad for our son who only orders chicken and fries. He doesn't have that many teeth right now so he had a bit of a struggle. My husband got the Cajun Chicken on wild rice and said it was very good. The service was friendly. She checked on us often enough. The tables along the wall are too close together, though. They should almost pull one table out to give a little more space between them. read more

Boy did this place go down hill. One time when there I had a sliced beef sandwich of sone sort and the bun was so thick, slippery and chewy all the fillings fell onto my plate. So I stopped going for a while. I came back jyst before Christmas of 2021 and tried a hamburger, as they've always had such tasty burgers that you swear it's a chopped up steak! Not this time, It had no flavor and I kept spitting out chunks of gristle. The fries had pepper on them when I said not to season them. My mother wasn't happy with her pasta dish as it was greesy. We have been here many times throughout the years, and have had some great food. My absolute favorite is the wild Cajun chicken with wild rice. It is ridiculously addictive, and very satisfying. If you like some spice I would recommend this any time. Their baked mac and cheese is also just delicious, with a smoky flavor, penne pasta, great cheeses, a mornay sauce and crumb topping. Our disappointments here have not been with the food. When we bring our two boys with us we always get seated right by the kitchen, which is offensive because our boys are perfectly behaved in restaurants. The last couple of times we've been there we've been greeted and served by young girls with absolutely zero personality or affect OR experience. Otherwise the food usually mostly compensates for the poor service. The last time we were there I tried the chicken pot pie- it is rich and comforting. read more

When I lived in Virginia, MN, this place was pretty much the only restaurant in town besides some grease diners, a mediocre Mexican spot and the usual fast food chains. I'm not even kidding. The highlight of this small, forsaken town is Target and this gem! Grandma's Salon serves several yummy beers on tap and some decent sized fruity cocktail concoctions that make the day in Virginia a little less depressing. The food is great. The chefs know their BBQing. The absolute best dish here are the grilled beef kebab skewers that are marinated overnight in a western dressing. They are served with wild rice (wild rice is everywhere in Minnesota, too bad California doesn't grow it and it's rare here) which is topped with an amazing white, creamy sauce and some grilled mushrooms. I try very hard to support local business but when I order and continually get something that is wrong it is difficult to wan to support you! I placed a to go order for 1 steak cheese French with mushrooms and 1 steak cheese French without mushrooms and 2 sides of ranch! Came here for an early dinner with a friend. My friend had a California burger that was very good. I had a godfather sandwich (roast beef green pepper sweet onion on a soft bun). It was very good as were the french fries. I also ordered a cup of chicken noodle soup. Unfortunately this cup of soup was $5.50. This seems to be a ridiculous price for the small cup of soup I received. The food is good but be aware that sides and salads and soups are exorbitantly priced. I.e. We stopped going to Grandma's awhile back because it was never consistent. Sometimes it would be decent and others terrible. And my husband got ill after eating a burger. We got a gift certificate and hadn't been there in over a year so we thought to try it again. It was awful and we won't be back. I got the steak cheese French and my husband he chicken cheese French. We ordered the wild rice stuffed mushrooms for appetizers. We got there right when it opened and it was not very busy. Despite this, our waitress took a very long time to come to the table. She wasn't friendly. The appetizer was good. Our main course came and both were terrible. The fries were not edible because of the amount of salt on them. I tried to run the salt off with a napkin with no luck. They went uneaten. The chicken French was saved slightly by all the cheese in it, but it was bland and not very good. The steak French was nasty. I've never had steak that tasted rotten until today. The sandwich went uneaten. The waitress did not check on us and did not refill drinks. When I went to the front to pay, the guy asked how the meal was. I responded unfavorably and he then avoided all eye contact and didn't say another word to me. Why bother asking how it is if you don't want to know and don't want to do anything about it? This reaffirmed the reasons we stopped frequenting grandma's. Stopped in because I've had a good experience at the Duluth location. DO NOT ORDER THE WINGS. I ordered Wings because I wanted something quick and easy before my meal came. And boy did they come quick! They came out pipping hot. So I take my fork and pull some meat away from the bone and bam, Pink! So I say to myself, ok I'll give them one under cooked chicken wing. Nope, one after another after another. All under cooked. So I push it to the side and waitress wakes up and ask if they are under cooked and I say yes. She proceeded to talk to the kitchen and say, "Hey, these are under cooked again! This has been happening more and more. This isn't the first time we've had them sent back. No! He doesn't want more. He just wants them taken off of his check!" So naturally I look up and the bearded chef is looking at me pissed off. He must be the issue. So my Bicycle burger shows up, with now Bun because I am not eating carbs. As I get it, I look up and yep! The bearded one is staring at me again. So..... I'm pretty sure I got some spit in my food. After 10 minutes passed they were still not getting our table together. We asked why to which the response was they got unexpectedly busy, again the place was half full.
